Among the primary functions of an Oil & Gas tubular is the preservation of its hole integrity enabling to further develop, maintain and produce the well. Casing tubulars in particular are
expected to resist a large range of external loads which will tend
to collapse them [1].

A short list of external pressure sources includes: formation or

reservoir fluids, during exploration or production, clay and salt
which are well known challenging formations to drill through,
mud systems, brine or cement, sea water in riser or line pipe
applications.
The need for High Collapse performances arises when API grades
cannot provide satisfactory solutions to the basic relation: collapse resistance - OD - ID / drift - steel grade. This is particularly
true for :
Exploration wells where additional safety margins are necessary
due to the uncertainties of the formation and pressures to be
encountered.
Slim well designs where special drifts are common practice.
Deep and High Pressure wells which require optimization of all
technical parameters in order to reach the pay zone with a profitableproduction size.
Deep water risers whose profitability is measured against each
pound gained.
Sour Service environments where corrosion resistance adds one
more constraint to the equation
Projects with the highest reliability standards (Health, Safety,
Environment, HP-HT) which require a meaningful guarantee
of performance
VALLOUREC & MANNESMANN TUBES OCTG materials
with High Collapse performance provide solutions to these growing challenges in a safe and reliable manner, while maintaining
full compliance with API 5CT (ISO 11960).

Four failure modes have been defined [2] based on failure pattern
observation and mechanical rules (refer to figure below). The
Yieldfailure mode is triggered when stresses are in excess of the
Yield strength in the hoop direction. On the other extreme, the
elastic failure mode is an unstable buckling in the circumferential direction, occurring with stresses initially below the Yield
strength of the material. These four domains are continuously
positioned as a function of the ratio of the outside diameter to
the wall thickness, or D/t ratio:

Influencing factors
Collapse resistance is influenced by a complex combination of
geometrical characteristics, material properties, applied loads,
and load conditions:
Geometry
o Outer Diameter (D)
o Wall thickness (t)
o Ovality
o Eccentricity or wall thickness variation
Mechanical properties
o Yield strength
o Youngs modulus
o Stress - Strain curve
o Residual stress

What is collapse?

Outside diameter versus wall thickness

Collapse resistance is a property of the pipe body itself. It is limited by the pipe failure in the circumferential direction when external pressure is applied.

Collapse resistance is mainly influenced by the geometrical D/t

ratio. In the range of OCTG products, with ratios between 10 to
40, collapse pressure resistance varies with a factor up to 30:

What is collapse?

Outside diameter versus wall thickness

Collapse resistance is a property of the pipe body itself. It is limited by the pipe failure in the circumferential direction when external pressure is applied.

Collapse resistance is mainly influenced by the geometrical D/t

40, collapse pressure resistance varies with a factor up to 30:

Combined loads
FEA simulation of Collapse

Collapse resistance is influenced by additional loads: Axial tension and compression, bending, torsion or internal pressure.

Pipe behavior under combined loads is described by mechanical

laws most commonly illustrated by the Von Mises Equivalent stress
(VME) ellipse and collapse formula [2].

External pressure chamber

Mechanical properties
Collapse resistance is a function of the pipe mechanical properties
such as Yield strength, ultimate strength, Youngs modulus, or residual stresses. Yield strength in particular is a major contributor to
the collapse resistance :

Chemical composition has some limited influence once a fully martensitic structure is achieved. It is reached with Quench & Tempered
heat treatment process (Q&T) which also allows to minimize and
control residual stresses.

Among influencing parameters such as end-fittings, induced supporting loads or pressure gradient (pressure build up with time),
the pipe sample length shows dominant influence. API 5C3 calls for
a minimum sample length of 2 times the pipe OD. However tests
demonstrated that only a length greater than 8 times the pipe OD
will ensure a stabilized and conservative rating, comparable to a
full length of pipe in the well.

The typical test report below shows the applied pressure up to the
guaranteed minimum rating, followed by a hold time, then final
pressure build up until failure.

Ovality and Eccentricity

Ovality shows a significant effect as illustrated on the graph below [3] :

API collapse values

Tests have proven that eccentricity of the pipe body does not show
a significant influence on the collapse resistance, as long as compliance with API 5CT wall thickness tolerance is maintained.

Testing parameters
Practically, collapse resistance is measured on a portion of pipe
that has been precisely mapped. It is then mounted into an external
pressure chamber, submitted to hydraulic pressure and recorded.

Starting in the 1920s, collapse calculation formulas were addressed in the API Society [4]. They were derived from the need to
reconcile simple theoretical models with physical test results. In
order to improve the predicting accuracy of these models, subsequent revisions of the API 5C3 standard have included new formulas that better account for the influential parameters. Yet, API collapse values derived from these formulas were given for information
purposes only, which provided the well designer with guidelines,
but no guarantees.

V&M Collapse prediction model

V&M TUBES started long ago to accumulate collapse testing data
[6] [7], in order to understand the collapse phenomenon and its

V&M proprietary High Collapse grades

V&M High Collapse grades for seamless pipes are designed by
selecting and controlling the most influential parameters.
Subsequently the model is used to calculate the external pressures
of the full product line i.e. each size, weight and grade.
V&M TUBES High Collapse grades cover the full range of sizes
and weights from 4 1/2 to 26, grades from 80 KSI to 150 KSI,
and offer special drifts on a standard basis without collapse derating. While strictly compliant with API standards, V&M Tubes
High Collapse grades are delivered with the guarantee of their
minimum High Collapse rating.

Combining High Collapse and Sour Service

V&M TUBES has combined its expertise on High Collapse applications along with that on Sour Service material to cope with the
most demanding environments [5]. This has lead to the High
Collapse & Sour Service product line. It is composed of 2 series to
fulfill the customers requirements with regard to the mechanical
properties and level of reliability.

HCS series Time Saving

Available in grades 90 and 95 ksi
Same chemistry and process as HCSS series.
High Collapse values guaranteed
85% SMYS threshold stress guarantee, higher than 80% in API.
Reduced delivery time, as fast as standard grades, thanks to the
mill quality records that prove SSC resistance without additional NACE method A test.
HCSS series Enhanced API
Available in grades 80 to 110 ksi.
Fully compliant with API (or its QA/QC philosophy for VM
110 HCSS grade)
High Collapse values guaranteed
85% / 90% SMYS threshold stress guarantee, higher than 80%
in API
Delivered with NACE method A test, performed on actual order
