Increased systems reliability is on every utility executives to do list. The SER application verifies the protection and control scheme in the event of system operation and allows utility operators to fine-tune the model to further increase systems reliability. The SER station demonstrates how a PLC-based system with the new ERT module in conjunction with SMS / Action Monitor with ERT support, can capture and deliver SER data locally or to the enterprise (remote location) for diagnostics and analysis.

Increased systems reliability

The ability to time stamp substation events has always been an important feature of most traditional automation systems. This ability provides operators a means to better understand system operations, fine tune protection and control schemes, and improve overall systems reliability. The SER station demonstrates the capabilities of a PLC-based solution to perform this application. The station includes two essential elements: the PLC rack and associated SER input modules to capture event data, and the PC-based software required to store/display and serve the data as required. ERT Module The multifunction I/O module (ERT) provides 32 wide-range inputs for voltage ranging from 24-125 VDC, with one millisecond time stamp resolution. The modules are usable in central and RIO configuration, with up to nine modules per rack. The ERT module is configured using the Windows-based Modicon Concept software package. Each input on the module can be configured as basic discrete, counter, or event logging inputs as required by the application. GPS Receiver Time synchronization is accomplished via a GPS receiver based on a global positioning satellite signal. One GPS in a given location can synchronize multiple ERT modules without additional time sync modules, minimizing overall wiring and cost. Antenna and pre-configured cable are also available to complete the system. Each GPS receiver has four 24VDC and one serial output signals. Smart Machine Suite software (SMS) SMS diagnostic software for Schneider Electric PLCs was developed to continually monitor machine systems and subsystems to identify system state changes and their causes. The SMS Action Monitor application provides the operator with immediate feedback as to operating status. In the event of deviation from a given process, the Action Monitor application will automatically enunciate the cause of the deviation and through the Action Monitor tool bar, advise the operator of the proper steps to correct the fault. The Action Monitor feature has been modified to support SER applications. When used in this application, the ERT module generates time stamp events and stores them in a 4K buffer. The Elementary Function Block (EFB) supplied with the ERT module manages the access of the time tag data in Concept programming software. Within Action Monitor (ERT application), another EFB was developed to access data from multiple ERT modules and make it available to PCs running Action Monitor. The features of Action Monitor allow the user to view the events and automatically generate alarm messages locally or remotely, or download to a printer. Historical files can also be automatically generated for future analysis in a Microsoft Access database. In the event that an application requires a local HMI, Action Monitor can run independently in the background and transfer data to the HMI as required by the operator. Benefits The benefits of using SER in substation using a PLC-based solution includes: Safe and profitable business and operating decisions The SER application allows the user to better understand the P&C model, thus optimizing operation, expanding equipment use, and increasing system availability. Improved diagnostics The solution provides a means of collecting time-stamped data, accurately and reliably for engineering analysis. Ease of Implementation Based on easy to use building blocks, the complete system is flexible, expandable and easy to configure. Changes can be quickly implemented in the field as the scope of work increases.
