HIGHER

STUDENTS

CHEMBUR ENGLISH JUNIOR COLLEGE.

CHAPTER NO. I

INTRODUCTION
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Education is the deliberate and systematic influence exerted by the mature on the armature through instruction, discipline and harmonious development of physical, Intellectual, aesthetic, social and spiritual powers of human being according to individual and social needs and directed towards the union of the educand with the creator as the final end. " Redden

In its narrow sense; as said by Prof Drever,"Education is a process in which and by which knowledge, character and behavior of the young are shaped and molded." In its wider sense, as said by S.S. Mackenzi,"Education is a process that goes on throughout life, and is promoted by almost every experience in life."

The goals of education are many and widespread. They are not only limited to national goals but also they are international goals. The goal of education is fourfold: the social purpose, intellectual purpose, economic purpose, and political/civic purpose. Current education issues include which teaching method(s) are most effective, how to determine what knowledge should be taught, which knowledge is most relevant, and how well the pupil will retain incoming knowledge. One of the most important aspects of education is the application of knowledge.

According to Mahatma Gandhi, education means to bring out derive the best out of human mind, body and soul. Education is important because it helps people get more out of life. It also increases their understanding about the world around. Most importantly

education helps people adjust to change. This benefit has become increasingly important because social changes today take place with increasing speed and affect the lives of more and more people. Education can be acquired through formal, non formal and informal institutions. School is one of the formal agencies of education. Schools teach reading, writing and other basic skills needed in everyday life. Education includes a variety of learning experiences. There is, as the great philosopher Whitehead (1861-1947) puts it, only one subject matter of education and that is Life in all its manifestations. Trade, Commerce and industry constitute a vital part of our lifes activities. These aspects of our lifes experience are extremely important and if we despise these, all our educational effort will be fruitless toils. High philosophies apart, the full education for an individual must be both for making a life. Thus viewed, the full education of an individual involves both vocational education and cultural education. The individual must be able to earn a living for leading a civilized life. In such a perspective, Commerce or Business Education is to be looked upon as just one phase of education, not inferior or superior to any other phase or branch.

Commerce Education is not inferior education. The Scottish Education Department in its booklet on the commercial subjects in secondary school, stresses that the function of Commercial Education is not merely to satisfy the vocational need of the pupils but also to foster an understanding of the economy of the community in which they will be called to play a part. In commerce no less than in industry, it is of primary importance that prospective entrants should have a sound general education. Mr. Graham Savage of the London County Council in his pamphlet on Commercial Studies in Secondary Schools explains that the essentials function of a secondary school commercial course should be to give the pupils a knowledge of the background of commerce and of the way it affects the life of the community; the pupils interest in commerce cannot, therefore, be confined to subjects which are specially commercial, but will influence their approach to other

subjects. The commercial curriculum in secondary education in Switzerland and Norway, are also found to include sufficient number of the so-called general subjects.

The importance of Commerce Education has gained recognition only in recent years in India is borne out from the fact that the Education Commission 1964-66 which went into all aspects of education and at all stages of education did not include the study of Business and Commerce in the schools curriculum. This also accounts for the scanty literature on the education and training of commerce teachers at the school stage.

The Special Committee on Education for Commerce in Britain (1949) delimited the coverage of Commerce Education thus: Education for Commerce must therefore embrace educational facilities for those preparing for or engaged in business occupations of every kind, professional or otherwise, from office routine such as typewriting and shorthand to the positions of great responsibility .It is in the sense that we understand the breadth of our enquiry; it includes education for wholesale and retail trade, for import and export trade, for transport and shipping, for general commerce, for profession socalled, for higher functions of management and administration, and for the move modest hand-maidens of commerce, shorthand typewriting.

1.2 CONCEPT
Commerce has always been given the primary importance in the educational systems. The study of commerce develops the broad outlook of the students. It inculcates logical and rational thinking. It satisfies inquisitiveness and curiosity. It develops scientific temper and scientific attitude. It is part and parcel of every life.

The students studying in higher secondary section are more curious at this age; they can driven to learn new and complex things. Commerce is full of novelty which interests the students and develops their cognitive domain. Commerce cannot be taught in isolation for better teaching help should be taken of the various correlation and application of other subjects.

10

Child gains knowledge as whole by integrating activities to his mind, head and heart. Over here comes the role of the teacher who plays a very important role in imparting knowledge to her students. She needs to be herself clear with all the concepts and make the students understand in such a way that it remains with them for lifelong.

1.3 NEED OF THE STUDY

Today commerce is progressing very fast. Thus it is necessary to Provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of academic disciplines. Develop a range of transferable skills in areas such as communication, problem solving and critical thinking. Develop language and technology skills Focus on global environment in which business operates.

To access progress and development of commerce and keep the students in shape that commerce is taking at the international level, it is important that every child in school is taught it.

The progress of nation depends upon the progress of commerce. We need to nurture and develop the positive attitude towards commerce in fertile minds of the students. The development of inquiry skill is very much suitable for the current classroom to do investigation, to develop the ability to ask question, investigate the aspects of the world around them, and use their observations to construct reasonable explanation for the questions posed. Teaching commerce as inquiry provides teachers with the opportunities to develop students ability and to enrich students understanding of commerce.

This is an age of knowledge explosion where tradition method will not help to keep pace with the development of knowledge and create positive attitude towards any subject especially towards commerce. It has been found that in early life children are enthusiastic in new learning situation but some here along the way many of them lose this enthusiasm and become school haters. This seems to be a problem faced by every schoolteacher. Hence to over come the situations it is important to know the reason behind the negative attitude of students towards commerce and find solution to change them. It is important

11

to know the difficulties faced by the students in learning commerce and provide remedial measures to improve the conditions. The need of the hour is to create creative minds, logical minds to withstand with the global progress and advancements. Today student are future of our nation. In order to achieve progress we need to discipline the minds of the children. This will result to development of problem solving skills and attitudes.

1.4 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A

STUDY OF THE CAUSES OF DISINTEREST TOWARDS

COMMERCE SUBJECT AMONGST THE HIGHER SECONDARY STUDENTS OF CHEMBUR ENGLISH JUNIOR COLLEGE.

1.5 CONCEPTUAL DEFINITION Oxford Dictionary

DISINTEREST: Basically means lack of concern or lack of interest. STUDY: The activity of learning or gaining knowledge, either from books or by examining things in the world. COMMERCE: It means trade or exchange of goods and services.

1.6 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION

DISINTEREST: Indifference towards an activity. STUDY: It is an activity to gain knowledge from any source COMMERCE: It is a division of trade or production which deals with the exchange of goods and services from producer to final consumer.

1.7 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

To study the attitudes of the students towards Commerce. To analyze the causes of disinterested towards commerce subject. To suggest ways to develop a positive attitude towards commerce subject.

12

1.8 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study includes collection of data from: Maharashtra board students only. Chembur English Junior College Students only. Class (standard) eleven students only.

1.9 DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The problem is located in the STD 11th Chembur English Junior College, at Mumbai. The students of this class do not show any interest in the subject commerce.

1.10 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

"With so many gaps in educational theory and so many areas of educational practice in need of analysis, it becomes of utmost importance that the researchers point out to the solution of the problem which can influence educational theory and practice. Careful formulation and presentation of the implications or possible applications of knowledge help to give the project an urgency justifying its worth." -Kothari'

Students are an integral part of the teaching learning activity. Without them the main goal of education cannot be achieved.

It has been found that in early life, children are enthusiastic in new learning situations but somewhere along the way many of them lose their enthusiasm and become school-haters This seems to be a problem faced by every school teacher. How can children be kept enthusiastic? Keeping the learning process close to the learner is a principle that comes nearest to answering this question. This study will help the teachers to know the ways that can help her to change the negative attitudes and maintain the positive attitude. It will help students in their studies. A student has to be well versed with his subject, so that at any point of time he can use his knowledge and apply it in any situation required.

13

Schools should provide more thought to teaching strategies to make the teachers more aware about the level of the interest a student has about his subject.

For the present day, the researcher has constructed a tool to measure the disinterest amongst students towards commerce.

A permissive classroom atmosphere that promotes free expression and discussion has been proposed as means for changing attitudes in classroom. The result of free expression depends upon the extent to which feelings can be clarified for the individual who expresses them. Insight occurs and feelings change when they are understood and accepted. Deliberate effort should be made for providing experiences that are likely to aid in the development of desirable attitudes. Attitude developed during school hours are desirable and lasting.

The principals of the schools will be able to understand better the requirements of the students and thus can provide them with more practical training then just rote learning and bookish information. As the principal is the head of the institute it becomes imperative for the head to know status of student's interest in science commerce as next year they will be appearing for board exams.

The students need to have a comprehensive understanding of the academic disciplines which underpin the operation of todays business world. The range of transferable skills in the areas such as communication, critical thinking, research and problem solving need to be developed. There is a need to encourage students to create, develop and start a new enterprise without over looking the global environment within which business operates. The study of commerce will provide the students the opportunity to gain specialist expertise in one of the following areas: finance, marketing, human resource management, management and information system plus law.

The teacher needs to spread awareness and to know the different study programs which could be inculcated in a classroom for teaching students.

14

CHAPTER NO. II RESEARCH DESIGN

2.1 INTRODUCTION
Research is an endeavor which requires exhaustive and widespread planning to reach the goal. Decisions regarding various aspects of the research have to be taken in advance. These decisions pertaining to the details of the study had to be formulated and well planned within the framework of the research design. Research design can be thought of as the structure of research - it is the "glue" that holds all of the elements in a research project together. We often describe a design using a concise notation that enables us to summarize a complex design structure efficiently. According to Seltiz A research design is the arrangement of condition for collection and analysis of data in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in procedure."

A research design is a blue print of the study which is being conducted by the researcher. It is a plan, structure and strategy of investigation.

2.2 METHOD OF STUDY

For the present study, the researcher has used the descriptive method of the comparative type.

Descriptive method describes and studies present events. A descriptive study describes and interprets what is. It is concerned with conditions or relationships that exist, opinions that are held, processes that are going on, effects that are evident, or trends that are developing. It is primarily concerned with the present, although it often considers past events and influences as they relate to current conditions.

15

2.3 SAMPLE
A sample is a set of cases drawn from the population by any systematic method for the purpose of making inferences about that population. This study has a sample size of 40 students of Class (standard) eleven at Chembur English Junior College enrolled for the academic year 2010 - 2011.

2.4 TOOL FOR DATA COLLECTION

A tool is the means by which data are collected. A tool may be in the form of questionnaire, a test, a rating scale or an inventory.

A questionnaire is generally concerned with factual information. A questionnaire is defined as a systematic compilation of questions that are administered to a sample of population from which information is desired.

A scale is a set of symbols or numerals so constructed that they can be assigned to the individuals or their behaviors to the whole scale is applied to draw inferences.

2.5 TOOLS PREPARED BY THE RESEARCHER

Whenever the research study requires the assessment of certain attributes for which a readymade tool is not available, it becomes imperative to construct it. As no tool was available to find out the lack of interest towards commerce of the students of class eleven of Chembur English Junior College, the researcher under the guidance of her guide prepared it herself.

2.6 DATA COLLECTION

The data collection was completed in one day. The researcher gave instructions for three minutes in each class. The students experienced no trouble in completing the tool. The researcher did not find much difficulty in gathering data. Hence the overall experience of the researcher was good.

16

2.7 ANALYSIS OF DATA

Analysis is a crucial process of research analysis is a form of description of data gathered in a systematic and scientific way. Statistical analysis acts as a quantitative link for communication of results the data were scored according to the scoring pattern of the scale. After this scoring of responses the data was analyzed with the help of percentage and interpreted accordingly.

17

CHAPTER NO. III

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATIONS OF DATA

3.1 DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS
Planning and organizing in research design and data collection provide a considerable assurance of quality research but the ultimate test lies in the analysis. Analysis is the main component of the research process. Analysis means categorizing, classifying and summarizing data to obtain answers to research questions. The data collected are classified so that smaller parts of knowledge obtained from them provide a better understanding and conceptualization of the whole. Descriptive statistics include the numbers, tables, charts and graphs used to describe, organize, summarize and present raw data.

3.4 Researchers Observations

The researcher observed that the children were eager to participate in the data collection. They were a little hesitant in the beginning but when the researcher gained their trust that the information would not be disclosed to anyone, they expressed themselves. They were completely honest. The students filled the tool by keeping their class teacher in mind. The researcher observed that about 23% of the students lost interest in commerce. About 77% of he students were still interested in commerce.

26

CHAPTER NO. IV CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

Any research is done with some objective. Some conclusions are drawn from the study undertaken. Also depending on the data collection and analysis, interpretations are made and accordingly conclusions are drawn. Also some suggestions re made to improve the present scenario.

4.1 Major findings

Students studying in senior secondary section have a positive attitude towards commerce. Students are unhappy with the classroom experience and teaching learning activity adopted by their teacher. Thus, they find it difficult to understand hard concepts.

4.2 Conclusions
Following conclusions are drawn by the researcher after doing this study:

Majority of the students have positive attitude towards the subject commerce but have lost interest in studying it because of the inadequate classroom experience and poor teaching strategies adopted by the teacher. There was hardly any difference between the attitude of girls and boys towards commerce. The improved teaching methodology of teacher can help to better the situation.

4.3 Suggestions
The researcher has come with the following recommendations, after going through the data and talking to the students:

27

A desirable interest towards learning will be maintained if, The thing to be learnt should not be too far removed from past learning. The learning situation should be made physically and intellectually attractive to the learner. The knowledge or skill to be acquired is perceived to need satisfaction. Learning should be accompanied by a feeling of achievement reinforced by recognition from others. Thus, when these conditions are sustained for all learners, the teachers will no longer be troubled by children who have less interest towards school or school or school subjects. Natural interest in the subject needs no external stimulation for the learners but gives them pleasure in mastering the subject.

TEACHERS:

Students have high ambitions to come up in life, put hard work from the very beginning and maintain their interest in studies, thus, securing good marks in tests and examinations. Thus, parents and the teachers have a hand in maintaining the childs interest in studies.

The teachers in school should encourage students in view of the importance and need of commerce education. The teachers can help the students in maintaining their interest in studies by making teaching more interesting, logical and meaningful plus correlating with real life experiences.

28

Apart from teaching methods, the evaluation should also be given due consideration. Every time that a topic is completed, a review lesson should be taken to ensure a satisfactory revision of the matter. The matter thus revised in small proportions will help them from examination point of view.

This way the teacher gets an opportunity to discover how good she has taught. This helps the students in discussing their difficulties and getting them solved well in time.

This particular practice may foster the habit of regularity in students in doing their lessons in time. This may also help them in forming clear concepts, understanding the principles and applications of any aspect of the subject or topic.

The teacher should have proper command over her subject matter. She should be acquainted with the current affairs and should have small discussions about them. She should make her students interact in her class. This means she should encourage the students to become active listeners rather than passive ones. Before switching over to a new topic, the teacher can ask few questions based on the previous topic in order to know that each child has followed the contents. Properly assignments could be given and checked regularly so that the child maintains the habit of regularity in ring home work. "A good start in a school subject by a skillful and enthusiastic teacher often disposes be child to like it for the rest of his life. Contrary, an unsympathetic teacher with warped views of child life often creates distaste for his subjects or for schooling as a whole, which lasts through childhood and frequently for life."

Commerce should involve more of practical aspects such as advertising a campaign, market research, surveys, etc. Projects should be emphasized. Teaching methods: - Methods of teaching contribute a lot in the formation of attitudes. The students should be made to think creatively and critically. A students attitude towards the study of commerce may well be more important than the understanding of the principles of commerce, at high school level since attitudes determine how well she will use her knowledge.

29

The way to teach our students to think creatively and critically about commerce; the way to Imbue in these students the emotions and attitudes that are necessary to keep them interested commerce, is not to emphasis the facts and principles of commerce to social problems-housing, transportation, the environment, pollution and health.

To promote an ever deepening understanding of basic principles to develop problem solving, analytical skills and the ability to apply them to the emblems of the material environment and social living and to promote the spirit of inquiry, the students must be provided with the opportunity to experience on their own.

The teachers should have clear Objectives in view, while teaching. They should make teaching more practical, more related to the life outside school and emphasis the utilitarian value of the topics.

Teachers should lead the students into a framework of mind that, commerce is interesting and it has something to offer as a career at any level of worry.

SCHOOL:
In many schools they adhere to a few specific activities. This may depend upon nature of thee students and also their interest. But it will be good to encourage as many students as much as possible to meet their interests and tastes. Every year the same activities need not be repeated. Moreover, the interest of children changes according to their age. Teachers and the management should take into consideration the growth and development of children, their interests and instincts. Children have plenty of energy. Club gives them more freedom, since it is a co-curricular activity. It gives them opportunity for expressing their ideas on scientific topics. Pupils get a change to get prepared for discussion and exchange their views. It is a good means to bring about better understanding between the educator and the student. Even when the students leave school, memories of a good commerce club at school will linger on in their minds for a long time. Commerce club offers plenty of opportunities of reading and hearing about the life work of great scientists and the service they have rendered to humanity.

30

In a class of 40-50 children it is difficult to cater to the needs of all the individuals according their I.Q. It is here that talents of gifted children could be made use of for assignment such as collecting additional information about topics already learnt, finding out solutions of the problems of the material environment and social living and to promote the spirit of inquiry. Only then a scientific outlook can become part of our way of life and culture."

PRINCIPAL:
The principal should take rounds of the school on daily basis to check the discipline of the school. The principal should do surprise observation of the teachers while they are teaching. The principal should make sure that the library is updated. Improvement of infrastructure and facilities help in fabrication of scientific temper.

4.4 Concluding Remarks:

At the end of the research the most important thing which one must have and keep is a positive attitude. It can open eyes to the valuable opportunities within even the most difficult situations. In fact a positive attitude is a very powerful and effective way to successfully deal with reality. Positive attitude develops interest.

Thus the time has come now to make a new break through in our education system and this is only possible through the collaborative efforts of the Government, schools, teachers and parents.

4.5 Recommendations for further study:

After doing the study, the researcher recommends the following suggestions for the further study: 1. While studying interest towards commerce, at the same time interest towards mathematics could also be assessed.

31

2. Also interest towards individual branches of commerce i.e. Accounts, taxation, management should be taken into consideration and find out that students are inclined towards which branch. 3. Also one should find out whether the students possess scientific temper and have problem solving attitude and aptitude. 4. One could also do research on attitude of students towards Information Technology.
