Layered Network Architectures The Communication Process Protocol and Reference Models
Benefits of Layering
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Assists in protocol design Open standard - fosters competition Changes made in one layer do not affect other layers Defines common terms that describe the network functions Provides a common (standard) language Allows technologies and protocols to evolve
Data Link
Accepts packets, creates frames, places packets in frames for host to host delivery across a single link, on the LANs and WANs Address Label source and destination MAC (Media Access Control) address
Transport
At the source, accepts data from layer above, creates segments, places data in segments and numbers them, transfers the segments, At the destination, reassembles the data from the segments and passes data to layer above Address Label source and destination Port number The Port number identifies the application

Presentation
Provides data format information to the application (layer)
Data encrypted, data is .jpg picture, data compressed
Application
