Lecture Objectives
Layered Network Architectures The Communication Process Protocol and Reference Models

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

TCP/IP Layered Architecture Model

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

Benefits of Layering
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Assists in protocol design Open standard - fosters competition Changes made in one layer do not affect other layers Defines common terms that describe the network functions Provides a common (standard) language Allows technologies and protocols to evolve

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

The Communication Process

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

Protocol Data Units (PDU) and Encapsulation

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

The process of sending and receiving messages

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

Protocol and Reference Model

A Protocol Model provides a model that closely matches the structure of a particular protocol suite TCP/IP A Reference Model provides a common reference for maintaining consistency within all types of network protocols and services OSI

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

ISO/OSI and TCP/IP Models

OSI Open Systems Interconnection, ISO International Organisation for Standardisation

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

Each Layer of the OSI Model Physical

Accepts frames, transmits as binary data, bits, over media between devices

Data Link
Accepts packets, creates frames, places packets in frames for host to host delivery across a single link, on the LANs and WANs Address Label source and destination MAC (Media Access Control) address

HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

Each Layer of the OSI Model

Network
Accepts segments from layer above, create packets, places segments in packets for end-to-end delivery through intermediary devices in other networks to the destination Address Label source and destination IP address The IP address identifies the HOST device

Transport
At the source, accepts data from layer above, creates segments, places data in segments and numbers them, transfers the segments, At the destination, reassembles the data from the segments and passes data to layer above Address Label source and destination Port number The Port number identifies the application
HET104/HET706 Slide Set 1 Network Architecture Models jbut@swin.edu.au, pgranville@swin.edu.au

Each Layer of the OSI Model Session

Manages sessions between users
Synchronizes web sessions, voice and video data in web conferences

Presentation
Provides data format information to the application (layer)
Data encrypted, data is .jpg picture, data compressed

Application
Perform services for the applications used by the end users
DNS, HTTP, FTP, SMTP

TCP/IP Application Layer maps onto all the above OSI

layers
