A century starting from the mid-17th century

Culture and way of life was completely different Chesapeake Area- Mainly used to farm cash crop of Tobacco since it was so profitable The intense labor and brutal heat had taken a huge toll

North Completely different Used very few slaves. About 5% of all slaves in the colonies were in the New England colonies since they were very family oriented in the 1740s No real need to use slaves because it was basically artisans, skilled craftsmen, so they didnt need a whole group of people and slaves All lived in cities. New England colonies had largest cities like Boston, Mass, Newport, Rhode Island. Two largest cities were Philadelphia and New York Ports in the 1770s they had 28k and 25k population. There More equal gender ratio so more families could be expected with more kids to keep building So contributes even more to family lifestyle The North also had a higher expected and average lifespan since they had fewer conflicts with Indians since disease killed off a lot of them. Averaged age 70 for men 71 for women which was 10 years more than the English Average and 20 more than the Southern colonies average Reasons for this was probably Cleaner Water, Less Diseases, And Cooler Climate

Southern From about 17th century to 1750s the expected life was around 40 years for the settlers further south like the Chesapeake region They had lots of diseases, Bad Climate, Also, the gender was ratio to 3 men for every 1 women which is bad

Religion Also, Puritans, Quakers, and other Protestants migrated with families. The North was mostly devoted to religion because of Quakers and Puritans lived together in a tight knit community where everyone knew each other Quakers lived in Pennsylvania which was given to William Penn because the King owed his father a great deal of money Quakers were

Lots of diversity in terms of geography, climate, and economic structure There were many South: Conditions for farming tobacco was less favorable in the southern colonies and the New England colonies Southern Colonies had different climate and geography. More humid atmosphere and low coastal areas to flood and make rice fields. The sun was very hot just like in the middle colonies but the soil didnt have enough nutrients to be able to have tobacco. There were many insects too and this made the work very unappealing Then in the early 1740, anther crop produced in large masses was found by South Carolina women, Eliza Lucas. Indigo Since she was in South Carolina, she was a rich plantation owner. She discovered this by planting the plant from the Indians on high grounds where the rice farms could not be made like the mountains This made the majority of the southern colonies have one major crop to plant whatever the soil conditions were. This made the Southern and Middle Colonies very similar since they both had very agriculture based lives and didnt develop large cities since everyone was on a farm. Dependent on the prices of the major crops for their income so it all depended on that

Middle Used slaves like the Southern colonies Tobacco was very profitable so they could afford more.

North Basically Unlike the Southern and Middle colonies, the New England colonies had their economy based on the merchants and their city commerce since trade was their main source of money
