Some of you may have already heard from your boys that next week is Blitz Week at the Prep. No one needs to head for bunkers or pull out a hard hat, but we are introducing this week to remind and prompt the boys about the basic manners, routine and classroom 12/06 Headmasters Assembly etiquette expected at St Johns Prep. You will see a list (Haircut & Uniform Inspection) of the various core focus areas. Your support of this Squash matches endeavour is very important to us, and so in advance we Thinking Skills 101 Part 1 would like to thank you all for your co-operation. WorkGrade 2 and LIII Interact ing through this list of non-negotiables with the boys at home and discussing them would be an excellent 13/06 Inter-Schools Quiz idea, so that the message is the same on all fronts.
14/06 Thinking Skills 101 Part 2 History LII & UII This week the teachers have been working through Assessment in History LIII & UIII guidelines with the boys in order to prepare them. The aim is not to try to instil these into the boys with a Gauteng Climbing Selection Competition 2 negative slant and with dire consequences being the motivator, but rather we want the boys to understand 19/06 Asikhulume Tuesday and realise how important manners and etiquette are. LIII & UIII Public Speaking Finals They will hopefully also then comprehend that good Headmasters Assembly manners need daily practice, and then good manners become second nature. Reminders from the Diary
Staff will be on the lookout for boys who havent embraced the concept during Blitz Week and boys will be asked to rectify their behaviour and make amends. Remember, It is easier to build a child than to repair an adult. I appeal to each of our parents to help build your son with us. Instilling the right value system and the knowledge of what is right and what is wrong, with the courage to stand up for what is right at an early age, will pay dividends not only for you as a parent and for us at St Johns, but for your son wherever he travels in later life. Watching all the Diamond Jubilee Festivities this past weekend, it is clear that Queen Elizabeth II is a remarkable woman in our living world and for the past 60 years of her reign. Through her dedicated and impeccable service to the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries, and her unwaivering dedication to God, the Church and her people all over the world, she has been and still is an example to us all.

Daily Routine and Classroom Etiquette 1.

Daily Routine On arrival at school, sports bags are to be placed in lockers The school day begins at 07h20 Boys line up in the Prep Quad promptly The first period begins at 07h30 Boys move quickly and quietly to class / chapel The House on duty lines the corridors to assist There is to be minimum disruption moving between classes Boys may not run in corridors boys walk in a line and line up quietly outside their next classroom

Sports Period at 09h30 or 10h45 Boys have 5 minutes to change and report to the relevant field / pool Those who are off sport must produce a letter or Doctors note Boys are to change back into uniform, unless they are playing an away match and get to the next match on time. Boys must ensure they are on time for the lesson following their sport period

Tea Break at 10h15 All boys must have hats in order to go to break on Mitchell Field or go to the tuckshop Boys must go to break detention before going for their food, detention will take place in Mrs Masheles classroom No hat in the sun = no play Those who do not have hats are to sit in the shade On return to class after break, boys are to be correctly dressed

Academic day ends at 13h45 Boys are to take time to eat and change for sport/ prep at 14h15 Supervised prep is compulsory for all boys who only start sport practice at 15h15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, unless they have music rehearsals

We appeal to parents to ensure their son is correctly dressed before he leaves the school property and wherever he goes off the school property. He is am ambassador for the Prep at all times! 6. Behaviour in class
Each lesson is only 45 minutes long, and every minute of this valuable time is needed for active teaching and working in a positive atmosphere, rather than nagging and punishing. The following points, therefore, are a given in any classroom at St Johns:
As a sign of courtesy to staff and to fellow students, we expect boys to arrive on time for lessons. Boys who arrive late will remain in break detention. To start our lessons in an orderly manner, we expect boys to line up quietly outside their classroom before entering. We value good manners at St Johns. We expect boys to stand at their desk and greet their teacher at the beginning and end of a lesson. Should a staff member or other adult enter the venue, we expect boys to stand up and greet them. We encourage active discussion and participation by boys in class, but boys may not talk while a teacher is speaking. When answering a question in class, boys must raise their hand and not shout out the answer. It is reasonable to expect boys to have the stationery and books needed for a lesson. Should a boy be absent from a lesson for any reason, it is his responsibility to ask the teacher what he has missed and to make up that work. We value our facilities at St Johns. When leaving a venue, boys must ensure that it is tidy and presentable for the next group of boys to use. Homework
7.
Homework is set to reinforce concepts taught, to complete assignments and to prepare for assessments.
Homework must be completed and submitted on time. Late submission of work will result in a mark penalty, and in a break or a Saturday detention. Teachers have the right to insist that homework is of a high quality. It is reasonable to ask boys to submit certain homework tasks printed on a computer. If boys are unable to print work at home, they must ensure that they arrive at school in time to print their work before school starts.

We value work that is of high standard, neatly written and carefully presented. All work must be dated and have a heading, which is underlined with a ruler.
Worksheets must be trimmed (with a ruler and scissors) and pasted in neatly. Boys must ensure they have their own glue! Answers must be given in full sentences unless otherwise indicated by the teacher. A line should be left between answers to allow for corrections. Corrections must be done by the boy, in pencil, for all written work submitted and for all assessments, to ensure that there is ongoing improvement.
9. General Rules All boys should:

Be aware of and uphold the Christian Values of the school. Be courteous and show respect to all visitors, parents and staff Respect the school environment Be helpful to other boys and be mindful and report any form of bullying

The soccer season is well under way and has proved to be a popular season once again. The annual U9 World Cup is taking place on Saturday 9th June at St Johns. All the U9s from St Davids, WHPS, St Peters, Saints and St Johns will be taking part. St John's will play Waterkloof House on 15th June: U10, U11 away and U9, U12 U13 at home. Rugby kicks off on the 3rd of July. We will play Inter-House Rugby on Gaudy Day, 30th June. A rugby jersey and gum guard are compulsory. No contact rugby is played during the morning PE lessons. Boys will practise ball handling drills during these times. Boys are encouraged to play, but rugby is not compulsory. Inter Schools Quiz

Well done to Jack Gnodde and Connor Dooley on their participation in the Inter-Schools Quiz at The Ridge last week. The Quiz is a termly event, attended by boys and girls from a number of different local schools. The teams are made up of four pupils, one from each of the various schools taking part. This term the theme of the Quiz was a mixture of Greek Mythology and the Olympics. Each team was given the name of a Greek God. A great feature of the Quiz was a fabulously entertaining round of live music with a great variety of musical questions. Our boys showed-off their excellent general knowledge and had an opportunity to interact with girls and boys from other schools. Mrs N Sulter

Sebastian Shearer (LIIV) participated in The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra auditions held in November 2011. He was placed in the Johannesburg Foundations Winds group for Trumpet. Well done, Sebastian!

Upper One Show

The Upper 1s are hard at work rehearsing for their show, Good Sport! which will be performed on Tuesday 26th June and Wednesday 27th June 2012. Performances will take place in the Clarke Auditorium and start promptly at 18h30. We anticipate finishing at 19h30. Because of the size of the auditorium, we request that those parents with surnames beginning with A to L attend Tuesday evenings performance and those with surnames beginning with M to Z attend Wednesdays performance. All the boys have been given a speaking part and it is imperative that they attend BOTH evening performances. A letter detailing what your son needs to wear, as well as further information regarding our show, will be sent home shortly. Thank you - One Warm Day

To the most wonderful donation of groceries that we have had for a while - wow that was amazing - My poor Camry was quite loaded but I was in 7th heaven - I sent all the maize - lentils, etc. to the Resthaven Ministries - this morning Christway and a few others will be collecting groceries too. I have kept some behind for now as I know in a week's time I will have more people coming forward and then I can help them. I have also contacted some children's homes and today Hamlet is being given soup and groceries so they are going to be surprised to get the groceries too. I will deliver these to them. iCare
Whilst we hope and anticipate that all boys will feel able to approach their teachers or a member of staff should they feel that something is wrong, we understand that this will not always be the case. Some boys may feel unsure of how to approach a staff member or unsure of what they should say. For this reason we are continuing to use the iCare box, which is now located in Mrs Powells office. We also have an electronic version where boys can contact the Pastoral Care Team at iCare@stjohnscollege.co.za. The Pastoral Care team is hoping that the boys make use of these initiatives to highlight anything that they CARE about at St Johns Prep.
The aim is to provide the boys with an alternative avenue to voice their feelings around whatever may be on their minds. This extends beyond the reporting of just peer difficulties (such as bullying) the aim is to further enhance the quality of the St Johns experience. All notes placed in the box or sent via email will be treated confidentially and actions instituted where possible.

AFRIKAANS TUITION Is your son struggling to communicate in Afrikaans or having difficulty mastering the basics of the language (oral or written)? I am qualified to assist in both of the above areas and would be available to provide the necessary tuition between 15:00 and 18:00 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at St Johns Preparatory. Tuition will be provided on either a one-to-one basis or in group situations, lessons will last for an hour. Progress will be regularly monitored and pupils will be expected to perform certain tasks and complete basic written assignments. Tuition fees for individual lessons are R250 per hour and R150 per hour for group sessions. Art club and extra classes
From the beginning of next term, Mr Poco is starting an Art Club (for LIII and UIII boys) and extra art classes for junior boys. Senior boys are encouraged to join the Art Club on Tuesdays from 14h00 -15h00 or Thursdays from 15h00-16h00. Juniors may arrange extra art lessons with Mr Poco at alternative times and on alternative days. We hope to see the senior boys joining the Art Club to create various exciting art works with mediums they do not normally use in class, such as print making, photography, oil painting and many more.
