The Great Canadian

Y
ou missed a fun filled evening if
you didn’t attend this year’s Great 1
Canadian BBQ on Saturday, January
22, 2011. Upfront, we thank our
sponsors, Ambassador Hoffmann, Andrea
Hoffmann and the Canadian Embassy staff
for all of their support in ensuring a successful
event.
As in prior year’s, the BBQ was held on the
lawn of the Ambassador’s official residence
with one of the largest “Calgary Stampede”
inspired groups to ever attend. The BBQ
maintained it’s traditional down home focus
on great food and family fun with plenty of free
flowing Canadian beer and wine, as well as an
outstanding selection of country & western
music provided by the Outlaw Brothers Band.
Catering support for this year’s event was
also outstanding with Courtyard by Marriott
providing grilled marinated rib eye skewers,
BBQ pork with onions and pineapple, chicken
teriyaki skewers and more. While the British 5 6 7
Club served up a wide array of salads including
potato, mixed greens, Greek and grilled
chicken with cranberry, as well as a complete
BBQ menu offering pork ribs, hamburgers,
sausages, hot dogs, grilled chicken, beef
kebabs, baked beans, chili, corn on the cob
and baked potatoes. Desserts included apple
and berry crumble with hot custard sauce,
fresh seasonal Thai fruit and the eternal
favorite of most kids and adults… chocolate,
strawberry and chocolate chip ice cream
cones.
When it became time to select the “Best
Stampede Outfits” in the Men and Ladies
categories, the judges were certainly offered
a large group of qualified contestants. In
11 12
fact, the ladies category was so competitive
that the judges were required to declare two
winners during year’s event. However, while
the men and ladies competed vigorously to
be the “Best of the Best” in their respective
category, the hands down favorite was a small
gun totting Cowboy by the name of Thomas
Willats who stole the show and garnered
special recognition. Now I understand why
W. C. Fields never wanted to share the lime
light with a small child. He was clearly aware
of being upstaged as validated by Saturday
evening’s competition.
Another exciting part of this year’s BBQ was
the Lucky Draw and Raffle which offered some 17 18 19
wonderful prizes including: several BlackBerry
Torch devices provided by Research In Motion
(RIM), Cross pens by the Royal Bank of
Canada, gourmet jelly beans by Jelly Belly,
Genesis Skin Klinik gift vouchers, Alexander
Keith’s and Kokanee beer, and a “Canadian
Party in a Box”, Canadian wines and more.
We look forward to sharing another great
event with you in 2012 !
