PM delivers remarks at the closing of the G-8 Leaders'

G-8 members talked frankly about global economic uncertainty | Thanks to strong
fundamentals Canada’s economy is developing exceptionally | However, we are part of a
global recession recovery that remains very weak | So, I encourage G-8 partners to
recognize that fiscal consolidation and economic growth go hand and hand | For instance,
Canada’s Economic Action Plan 2012 makes important labour market | By trying
innovation policy, and strong reforms we can focus on opening new markets | And also
making reasonable reductions in government spending to eliminate the deficit in the
medium term |

I was pleased yesterday to announce a substantial new investment in transformative

programs to fight hunger in Africa | This summit also reaffirmed our commitment to support
North African and Middle Eastern countries in transition | I also repeated Canada’s position
that world leaders must continue to address the human rights situation in Syria | and I
highlighted our continuing concerns about nuclear increase in Iran and North Korea |

If you look at the numbers, and if you examine the scale of our imports and exports | You
can see that they represent an equivalent to 60 percent of Canada’s products | and one-in-
five Canadian jobs are generated directly by trade | I’m told that an agreement with the EU
alone could increase our trade by 20 percent and create 80,000 more new jobs | Imagine
what we could do with a truly comprehensive global network of trade agreements | Now,
Canada has been emerging from the global recession faster and stronger than all other
developed economies.

Nearly 700,000 new jobs have been created since the recovery began in July 2009 | In
fact, unlike most developed countries more people are working in Canada today than
before the crisis | Unlike most countries, under our Economic Plan, our deficits and taxes
are going down, not up | Our investments in education, skills training, research and
innovation are going up | And we continue to open our doors to immigration, with a special
reforms of the system to better serve our labour force needs |

And you know that our Government wants to give new Canadians the best possible
opportunity to succeed in this country | Our Canada is a place where people from every
possible background can pursue their dreams and reach their goals | That’s what makes
this country so special and so unique | That is, at its heart, why our country and our
economy remain the desire of the world | And as I said before, the business successes of
this organization give our country a real advantage in a globalized marketplace |
