Finance
A finance concentration provides a deep foundation in financial management principles and a chance for further specialization. Students will complete the primary finance electives of the MBA program and a course in financial statement analysis as well as additional specialized courses.
Global Business
No business escapes the effects of globalized commerce. The ability to take full advantage of a global economy can be the difference between success and failure. Sourcing, staffing, financing, developing ideas, and reaching customers, all require managers to have a global perspective. The concentration draws upon coursework from several functional areas as well as courses taken from other Rice University departments
Marketing
The marketing concentration is ideal for those planning to pursue a career in brand/product management, marketing research and analytics, pricing, new products, marketing communications and direct marketing, or promotion.
Accounting
The concentration in accounting reinforces the programs fundamental concepts and adds insight into accounting processes and principles. Completion of the concentration enhances a students ability to analyze and interpret accounting reports while emphasizing the importance of accounting information to internal and external decision makers.
Energy
A concentration in energy develops students perspectives and improves their understanding of management issues in the energy industry. In addition to a fundamental knowledge of the energy industry, the concentration explores the management and global economic environment of the energy industry. The coursework also delves into geopolitics by requiring courses from other Rice University departments.
Management Consulting
Management consultants must be able to identify both the problem and the solution and, in many cases, implement the corrective action. It is an ideal path for students that enjoy solving problems and who have strong analytical skills. The curriculum covers an array of issues related to business strategy and the process of analyzing business problems from various angles to develop preliminary solutions.
Entrepreneurship
The concentration in entrepreneurship presents a framework for success. The required courses provide insight into starting a business, as well as buying and selling a company. Students may choose courses in specific entrepreneurial topics in which they are interested.

Action Learning Project
During your first years Action Learning Project (ALP), youll join a team of four to six students in consulting for a dynamic host company over a ten-week period, including five intensive weeks on-site. With guidance from faculty and a corporate liaison, youll study the scope of improvements needed and examine the companys processes, then provide written recommendations and present your findings to senior management. An ALP helps you build excellent teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills; strengthens your critical thinking and analysis abilities; deepens your understanding of core course concepts and tools; and helps develop problem definition and project scoping skills. This fully integrated, multidisciplinary approach also provides practical experience in another critical real-world skill: the ability to implement change.

Summer Internship
All students are expected to secure an internship during the summer following their first year in the program. These provide students with realworld experience in their area of interest or in an industry they wish to move into, and many are offered full-time positions upon completing the internship. Internships also raise the profile of the school in the corporate community while simultaneously providing students with enhanced work experiences.
Bill Arnold
Professor in the Practice of Energy Management As a senior executive in energy, government and banking, Bill engaged at the highest levels of government in the U.S. and abroad to provide geopolitical insights, develop business strategies and advance multi-billion dollar projects. What most impressed me about the Jones School were the students. They bring extraordinary experience into the classroom. I hope to give them the perspective of other stakeholders, to help them understand the complex condition of meeting environmental, social and economic requirements, and to recognize the critical dimensions to energy and sustainability. business.rice.edu

I went on three international trips during my two years at the Jones school: china, India and south america. all three gave me that unique perspective I'd expected from the Jones school hands-on learning and the freedom to develop my own impressions. Visiting companies and classes, I experienced global business, economies and lifestyles in action. In the midst of all the visits and projects, there was time for tourist attractions, which was important to understanding the history, culture and way of life of those countries.

Al Napier
Professor of Management Director, Center on the Management of Information Technology Area Coordinator, Entrepreneurship In 1998, 14 years after he began teaching at the Jones Graduate School, Al Napier had the idea to begin each semester with every students name memorized. I would go into the classroom, ask them to put away their tent cards, and then call every one of them by their first name. And hes done it ever since. The minute I do that, he says, It changes the atmosphere in the classroom. They realize that I know who they are, that I care about them, and that I expect them to be prepared for class. Recipient of a 2007 and 2010 Jones School Excellence Award in Teaching and winner of the 2008 Acton Award, a national honor for excellence in entrepreneurship education, the humble and still-active entrepreneur
could create something of their own and not have to be tied to a big corporation. At the age of 26, with a BA, MBA and PhD all from University of Texas at Austin, Al went to work for Conoco for eight years and then before joining the Jones School, he started and owned a highly successful computer consulting, training and book publishing company that he eventually sold to his business partner after 20 years of operation. Today he says of his teaching career, I enjoy having alumni back in class and treating their experiences like a teaching case. They lecture to students who are sitting in the very same seats they sat in. Im inspired by having a positive impact on people and showing students what they can do and how they can succeed.

course, lets try to connect the pieces to build the whole puzzle. I consistently drive that point. A member of the faculty since 2007, Prashant received the 2009 Rice MBA for Professionals program Teaching Award for Excellence and 2010 Rice MBA Full-Time program Teaching Award for Excellence. You have to enjoy teaching, he says. There is a certain amount of energy that automatically comes into the classroom when you like what you do. Prashant knew he wanted to teach since he was young. His mother was an elementary school teacher, and he always believed his dream job would be to teach math to second graders. However, while earning his MBA, he realized there was a way to combine his love of teaching and his love of business teach at a business school. He didnt apply to a PhD program immediately, though. I felt if I were to teach business, I also needed to work in the world of business so that I better understood it. He worked seven years before attending The Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania for his PhD. After seven years teaching at the Ross School of Business at University of Michigan, the opportunity to grow brought him to Rice.
Prashant found the vibrancy of Houston and the positive environment at the Jones School very attractive. The Jones School has grown significantly in the last three or four years and at the same time the bar has been set higher as our faculty has increased and thats always good for a school. The higher the bar, the stronger everyone becomes.
Prashant Kale

Case Competitions
Rice MBAs know how to execute under tight deadlines. Nothing quite demonstrates this as clearly as their consistent success in external case competitions, including some of the most highly regarded international case competitions. During a competition, teams of students have a short time sometimes as little as 24 hours to develop a strategic solution to a problem, analyze unanticipated issues, and present a solution to a team of expert judges, usually from industries related to the case at hand. Add to this the competitive pressure of facing off against the best and brightest from many of the other top MBA programs from around the country, and you can understand the intense value that is created from participating in one of these competitions. Our students have competed against top-ranked international and U.S. business schools in subject areas such as marketing, strategy, finance, energy, real estate, and business plans and have been successful in all instances. Rice MBAs emerge from case competitions with a deeper understanding of both strengths and weaknesses in their analytical and presentation skills, as well as a profound appreciation of team dynamics (and hopefully a little extra spending money in their pockets). There is truly no better way to learn than learning by doing.

We were required to identify the risks involved and were tasked with developing three recommendations for a solution. the analyses needed to compete in this competition were valuation of the company, the intricacies of a reorganized management structure, and concepts of organizational behavior regarding production and team morale.

She earned her MBA in 1996 and began a dazzling professional rise. From finance associate in treasury to manager of strategic transactions to assistant treasurer by 2001, she then served the company as vice president, upstream planning and portfolio management; general manager, corporate planning and budgets; and today, vice president and treasurer. Her extraordinary success in business was rewarded last year when Vallejo was named 2009 Female Senior Executive of the Year by the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Its a global industry with geopolitical ramifications, so what happens in the energy business impacts every person on the planet. That enthusiasm for the industry contributes to Vallejos success, but it is her enduring commitment to hard work, strong values and open communication that make her a true leader. I try to be a role model. I believe in the fundamental principles of working hard, treating others with honesty and respect, and giving everyone an opportunity for growth and development. I never experienced a situation where I wasnt welcome to contribute, so I make sure that happens within my scope.

my involvement in the rice finance club is probably the best management experience I could get during my mBa education. the finance club is the schools biggest and most active club. my favorite marketing club event from this year was the conference simulation that we organized and hosted in part with other clubs on campus. the idea behind the event was to provide a platform for alumni and second-year students to help first-year students maximize career opportunities and prepare for the upcoming national mBa conferences. It is important for students to have polished interview skills and make the right first impression with recruiters at these national mBa conferences. event activities included 30-minute mock interviews conducted by alumni as well as a keynote speaker and an alumni panel. alumni attended from top marketing firms such as P&G and frito-lay. students found the event extremely helpful.
