Grade 4 1. The Life Cycles of Animals (CAMBRIDGE PRIMARY does not cover this topic.

. This chapter will follow SG LOs. Well need to cover 2, 3, 4 stages life cycles. Also, touch on animal cells here.) Show an understanding that different organisms have different life cycles. - Plants - Animals Observe and compare the life cycles of animals over a period of time. e.g. butterfly, mealworm, grasshopper, cockroach, chicken, frog Show an awareness that offspring take the characteristics of their parents, therefore, they closely resemble their parents 2. Introducing Habitats Investigate how different animals are found in different habitats and are suited to the environment in which they are found Use simple identification keys (New LO) Recognise the way that human activity affects the environment, e.g. river pollution, recycling waste 3. 4. Heat and Temperature (Follow SG syllabus) List some common sources of heat. State that the temperature of an object is a measurement of its degree of hotness. Differentiate between heat and temperature. - heat is a form of energy - temperature is a measurement of the degree of hotness of an object Show an understanding that heat flows from a hotter to a colder object until both reach the same temperature. Relate the change in temperature of an object to the gain or loss of heat by the object. List some effects of heat gain/loss in our everyday life. - contraction / expansion of objects - change in state of matter Identify good and bad conductors of heat. - good conductors: metals - bad conductors: wood, plastic, air Measure temperature using a thermometer and a thermal datalogger Introducing MatterSolids, Liquids and Gases Know that matter can be solid, liquid or gas Know how particles behave in solids, liquids, gas Properties of solids, liquids, gas

5. States of Matter: Melting and Freezing Investigate how materials change when they are heated or cooled Know that melting is when a solid turns into a liquid and is the reverse of freezing

6.

Magnets (Grade 3 LO) Explore how some materials are magnetic but many are not Explore the forces between magnets and know that magnets can attract or repel each other Know that magnets attract some metals but not others

7. Sound (Grade 4 LO) Explore how sounds are made when objects, materials or air vibrate and learn to measure the volume of sound in decibels with a sound level meter (Grade 4 LO) Investigate how sound travels through different materials to the ear (Grade 4 LO) Investigate how some materials are effective in preventing sound from travelling through them (Grade 4 LO) Investigate the way pitch describes how high or low a sound is and that high and low sounds can be loud or soft. Secondary sources can be used. (Grade 4 LO) Explore how pitch can be changed in musical instruments in a range of ways

Measurement skills Temperatureusing in-glass, digital thermometers; thermal data-loggers Volume of sound in decibels using sound level meter Skills in presenting results/evidence In drawings, bar charts, tables
