BORN IN THE year 1058 in eastern Persia, Al-Ghazzali was a philosopher and Sufi mystic, author of numerous books, and a man of pothymathic ability. He wrote on conditioning, indoctrination, and obsession, and his teachings had a significant influence on both Islamic and Christian thinkers of Medieval times. The Alchemy of Happiness is Al-Ghazzalis own abridgement of his masterwork, The Revival of Religious Sciences.

GRANT, John
FLUENT IN ARABIC, Persian and Hindi, Dr. Grant spent much of his life living in, and writing about, traditional communities in the Middle East and Central Asia. His books include Through the Garden of Allah and Travels in the Unknown East.

MAIMONADES, Obadyah

ALI SHAH, Sirdar Ikbal

SON OF THE Nawab of Sardhana, and great grandson of the Afghan statesman Jan Fishan Khan, Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah is one of the most respected literary figures of the pre-War years. His dozens of books made accessible the ancient traditions and cultures of Arabia and Central Asia, in a very readable way. HAFIZ, Muhammed
BORN IN ABOUT 1325 in Shiraz, was persecuted in his day, and fell out of favour with the Court. After his death the subtle genius of his work was appreciated and, for centuries, Hafizs Diwan has been put in pride of place in the homes of scholars, aesthetics and ordinary men.

ORNSTEIN, Prof. Robert E.

PROFESSOR ORNSTEIN IS the author of many books on psychology and the human mind. He is the Chairman of The Institute for the Study of Human Knowledge, and lives in northern California.

BURTON, Sir Richard Francis

ONE OF THE greatest British scholars, explorers and Orientalists of the 19th century, Burtons written legacy is wideranging and polymathic. He translated not only The Arabian Nights, but scores of other treatises and documents; as well as writing dozens of books, including First Footsteps in East Africa, Pilgrimages to El-Medinah and Mecca, and Lake Regions of Central Africa. In addition to writing, Burton was a diplomat, a linguist and an expert swordsman.

JAMI, Nuruddin
FIFTEENTH CENTURY AFGHAN poet and mystic, Jami spent his life in Herat, and was celebrated for his scholarship in his own lifetime. Despite numerous offers of patronage, he preferred the simple life of a Sufi scholar.

RUMI, Jalaluddin
BORN IN AFGHANISTAN in 1207 CE, Jalaluddin Rumi was without question the greatest Sufi mystic and poet in the Persian language. His was the author of more than 30,000 verses, the most celebrated of which is his Masnavi. Rumi moved to Konya, in modern Turkey, where he is remembered for establishing the practice of Whirling Dervishes.

KHALILI, Khalilullah
POET LAUREATE OF Afghanistan until his death in 1987, Khalili was celebrated for his traditional style, and use of classical themes.

GARNETT, Lucy M. J.
MS. GARNETT LIVED and travelled in Turkey during the first decade of the 20th century. Her book, originally entitled Mysticism and Magic in Turkey, was much emulated for decades, regarded as the central work on the subject.

LESSING, Doris
BORN IN PERSIA in 1919, Doris Lessing was brought up in Rhodesia, before moving to Britain in 1949. Her initial novel, The Grass is Singing, about a Rhodesian farmer, his wife and their African servant, was the first of a vast body of work, much of it concerned with characters undergoing the political and social upheavals of the century.

SAADI of Shiraz
SAADI WAS BORN during the first quarter of the 13th century, and became regarded as one of the foremost scholars in Persian classical literature. He travelled west as far as North Africa, where he was held as a captive of the Franks, before returning to his native Shiraz as an elderly man. Saadis two most important texts are undoubtedly The Gulistan, Rose Garden and The Bostan, The Orchard.

SANAI, Hakim
SANAI, WHO LIVED during the 11th and 12th centuries, is reckoned to be the earliest Afghan teacher to use the love-motif in Sufism. Jalaluddin Rumi acknowledged him as one of his inspirations. Sanai is known for several astonishing works, including The Walled Garden of Truth.

SHAH,Tahir
AUTHOR AND EDITOR of ten books of travel and cultural studies, Tahir Shah is known for his unique and sometimes outlandish journeys. His books include Beyond the Devils Teeth, and The Middle East Bedside Book. In addition to writing, Tahir Shah has won praise for his television documentaries he has made on Africa and Latin America.

SHABISTARI, Mahmud
A CONTEMPORARY OF Saadi of Shiraz, Shabistari is the author of the celebrated mystical text, The Secret Garden. Although very little is known of his life, it is clear that his work was influenced by the spiritual upheaval of the Mongol invasion of Iran, which took place half way through the 13th century.

SHAH WALIULLAH of Delhi

A GREAT RELIGIOUS teacher of the 17th century, Shah Waliullah of Delhi distinguished himself as a major thinker from the age of fifteen. He returned to the essentials of Sufi experience in order to show that essentially Sufism is one discipline. Shah Waliullah is considered to be the bridge between the medieval and the modern in Islamic thought.

SHAH, Amina
AMINA SHAH IS widely regarded as one of the greatest collectors and tellers of traditional folktales of the twentieth century. Formerly Chairperson of the British College of Storytellers, she is the author of several important collections of stories, including Tales From the Bazaars, Arabian Fairytales and Tales From Afghanistan.

SHAH, Idries
IDRIES SHAH WAS born in 1924 into the respected Afghan family, the Sadaat of Paghman. Among his many accomplishments, he is credited with making a wide body of scholarship on Eastern traditional teachings available in the Western world. Shahs thirty books, translated into more than 15 languages, which sell in their millions, are considered to be some of the most important literature to be published during the twentieth century. One extraordinary aspect of Shahs work is the wide spectrum of readers his books attract: they are read and studied by psychologists and novelists, physicists and by social workers, by actors, lawyers and housewives.
