My Life From Brigand to King The Autobiography of Amir Habibullah

AMIR HABIBULLAH

The Life and Work of Jalaluddin Rumi

AFZAL IQBAL FOREWORD BY PROF. A. J. ARBERRY

272 PAGES At the end of the First World War, Morag Murray left her safe, comfortable, middleclass existence in Edinburgh, and travelled to the distant stronghold of her husbands family in the mountains of Afghanistan. The change meant swapping all that was predictable in her life for adventure and the unknown. In this remarkable autobiography she describes how, during the Great War she first fell in love with the son of a noble Afghan chieftain, married him, and learnt how to adapt to the ways of his people. Murrays stories give an intriguing insight into the lives of the mountain tribes, their culture, laws and rigid codes of honour, still very much in evidence in Afghanistan today.

276 PAGES Bacha Saquo, the illiterate son of a watercarrier fought his way to the throne of Afghanistan and lost it within a year. Starting from nothing, and ruthless to a degree, his ambition was fired by a wandering Mullas prophecy of Kingship. Habibullahs autobiography was dictated by the monarch to Jamal, his trusted henchman. The two were companions and friends, having grown up together, before the water-carrier embarked upon his reign of terror which is still remembered in Afghanistan. My Life From Brigand to King is one of the most extraordinary biographies of any time. To read it, helps one understand the background of why Afghanistan is as it is today.

330 PAGES Until the publication of The Life and Work of Jalaluddin Rumi, no attempt had been made to write for the general public a biography and aesthetic appreciation of the man who enriched human thought with such eloquent contributions as The Masnavi. Afzal Iqbal, an expert on Rumis life and his role in the dissemination of Sufi thought, is both scholarly and sensitive to the material. The book helps to unravel Rumis life and his teachings, enabling a greater understanding of key ideas, as well as assisting one to overcome problems in the study of Rumis work.

SIRDAR IKBAL ALI SHAH

179 PAGES 330 PAGES 215 PAGES This, begins the introduction by Professor Edward Sir Denison Ross, is one of the most extraordinary books I have ever read. Whether tackling highwaymen or learning how to sell trinkets, the gusto and panache of the author shines through. Adventurer, scholar, and lover of novels of the American Wild West, the Sirdars noble lineage does not stop him lodging in caravanserais and living like a penniless Dervish, thus offering a glimpse of the swashbuckling East that few are privileged to see. The introduction concludes: So here you are, the treat of a lifetime, from the greatest contemporary writer and traveller of the East!
HARDBACK ISBN

Forty-five million years ago, the supercontinent of Gondwanaland split apart. This created what are now known as India, Africa and South America. The huge landmass was named after the Gonds, a primitive tribe of central India. Meeting a Gond story-teller, Tahir Shah heard their ancient saga, and set off on an epic journey across Gondwanaland. Beyond the Devils Teeth is the story of his experiences as he travelled: meeting wanderers and expatriates, attending magical ceremonies and seeking treasures. Roughing it most of the way, the authors expeditions range through sweltering India and Pakistan, Uganda and Rwanda, Congo and Liberia, Brazil, and finally through Argentinas frozen expanse of Patagonia. Nothing is what it seems in this extraordinary book. Shah is a brilliantly The Sunday Times original writer.

This book of twenty narratives by Asias master writer Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah, can be read merely as an entrancing collection of tales of the East. However, this is to overlook the fact that they contain some of the most important illustrative and mystical content that he presented during a long life of study and teaching. Soldier, diplomat, medical man, professor and mystic, Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah sets his tales, Arabian Nights-style, in a caravan bound for Mecca. Every night, a member of the pilgrimage tells a tale. Each tale contains a priceless nugget: allegory, contemplationtheme or insight.

198 PAGES A remarkable collection of experiences in Middle Eastern lands, Travels In The Unknown East links journeys from Istanbul to Alexandria, and from Aqaba to Damascus. John Grants adventures, which took place as two extensive journeys separated by almost fifty years, encounter Druze and Arab sheikhs, simple Dervishes and Coptic priests. Travelling with Grant, we experience magical ceremonies, desert ambushes and brawls with drug-smugglers. Ancient traditions, all the blaze and panoply of the immemorial East together with some wonderful Oriental tales meet and mingle with modernity and violence in this extraordinary book.

309 PAGES After her marriage to an Afghan nobleman (described in My Khyber Marriage), Morag Murray travelled with her husband to his native Afghanistan, arriving there shortly after the end of the First World War. Accompanying her husband on diplomatic missions, as well as journeying with him into remote mountain regions, and the sublime valleys of Afghanistan, the author gains a rare glimpse of Afghan life and culture. Valley of the Giant Buddhas records people, whose lives had changed little in centuries, a short time before a generation of war descended on Afghanistan. The book is written with the dry charm of Mrs. Murrays Scottish homeland, whether she is recounting an anecdote from a high profile diplomatic scene, or relating a simple encounter in the foothills of the Hindu Kush. IDRIES SHAH

346 PAGES In his best-selling Darkest England, Idries Shah asserts that the English hail from a little-known place called Hathaby, but their roots go back much farther, perhaps to the distant Asian realm of Sakasina. Once a nomadic tribe of warriors, the English fled westward, bringing with them epic tales, traditions, and an Oriental way of thought. Shah charts the genius of the English in adopting and adapting almost anything spiritual, moral or material for their own use a faculty that has transformed them from warrior nomads into successful diplomats, businessmen, thinkers and scientists.
PAPERBACK ISBN

222 PAGES The Englishmans Handbook is the third book in Idries Shahs best-selling trilogy on why the English are as strange as they are. He examines the baffling phenomena of the British and Britishness, presenting a manual of handy tips on how to muddle through while visiting English shores. An illuminating and often hilarious read, the book is just as valuable to the British as it is to foreigners. It contains all sorts of extraordinary information on how to confuse foreigners with sheer Englishness, if any do manage to break through the barriers.
HARDBACK ISBN

224 PAGES The Natives Are Restless chronicles some of the amazing, amusing, and thoughtprovoking adventures of the Afghan traveller and writer, Idries Shah, among members of what he calls the English tribe. It is an enthralling sequel to his bestselling Darkest England, the narrative illustrating his practised eye as an anthropologist. Shah observes how the English see themselves, and contrasts it with how the rest of the world views this eccentric island race. He also speculates on the likely continuing effect of Englishness on the future development of global society, offering unsuspecting parallels between English attitudes and Oriental wisdom. I cant imagine anyone not enjoying this many-angled book, such a rich mixture of anecdote, information and history! Daily Telegraph

287 PAGES 202 PAGES For many years The Dervishes of Turkey, (originally published in 1912, and entitled Mysticism and Magic in Turkey), formed part of the foundation of Western understanding of the East. Its information was widely quoted and copied by others. In his introduction, O. M. Burke explains the problems arising from this: the books author spoke no Eastern language, and was treating a very complex subject without any clear understanding of it at all. The Dervishes of Turkey is presented almost as a cautionary tale, one in which the blind guides the blind, where the authors good intentions channel the reader away from a genuine path of study.

DORIS LESSING

185 PAGES Described in the Quran as the most beautiful of stories, the romance of Yusuf and Zulaikha is a theme to which Eastern poets have constantly returned. In Jamis deeply moving, thought-provoking, and highly entertaining version, it finds its greatest expression. The story explores the intimate and many-levelled relationship between love and beauty, and is the most celebrated of all Jamis works. This entirely new prose translation combines a faithful reflection of the spirit of the original, with the compulsive readability of a good novel.

In A Perfumed Scorpion, Idries Shah directs attention to both the perfume and the scorpion the overlay and the reality in psychology, human behaviour and the learning process. Crammed with illustrative anecdotes from contemporary life, the book is nevertheless rooted in the teaching patterns of Rumi, Hafiz, Jami, and many other great Oriental sages. 288 PAGES The Way of the Sufi presents an unparalleled cross-section of material from Sufi schools, teachings and classical writings, as a basic course of Sufi study. The author begins with the outward aspects of the teaching most likely to puzzle the student coming fresh to the subject. Wisdom of the Idiots

IDRIES SHAH

82 PAGES 198 PAGES Thinkers of the East is a collection of anecdotes and parables in action illustrating the eminently practical and lucid approach of Eastern Dervish teachers. Distilled from the teachings of more than one hundred sages in three continents, this material stresses the experimental rather than the theoretical and it is that characteristic of Sufi study which provides its impact and vitality. The emphasis of Thinkers of the East contrasts sharply with the Western concept of the East as a place of theory without practice, or thought without action. The books author, Idries Shah, says Without direct experience of such teaching, or at least a direct recording of it, I cannot see how Eastern thought can ever be understood.

On this level the movements of the characters in a story portray psychological processes, and the story becomes a working blueprint of those processes. The Sufis, who believe that deep intuition is the only real guide to knowledge, use the humorous stories of Nasrudins adventures almost like exercises. They ask people to choose a few which especially appeal to them, and turn them over in their mind, making them their own. Sufi teaching masters say that in this way a breakthrough into a higher wisdom can be effected. A single story can work on many levels, from great humour to initiating profound thought.

In its introduction, he writes, Thousands of books and monographs have been written on Sufism and the Sufis, almost all of them from the point of view of other ways of thinking. When it first appeared in 1964, The Sufis was welcomed as the definitive work on the subject: rich in scope, clearly explaining the traditions and philosophy of the Sufis to a Western audience for the first time. In the four decades since its release, the book has been translated into more than a dozen languages, and has found a wide readership in both East and West. It is used as a text in scores of leading universities around the world, and the material contained within it has been applied by psychologists and physicists, by school teachers, lawyers, social workers, and by ordinary members of the public. Ted Hughes wrote of it: An astonishing book. The Sufis must be the biggest society of sensible men on earth; and Doris Lessing said of it: I had waited my entire life to read this book. 272 PAGES Previously published only as separate essays, Sufi Thought and Action assembled and introduced by Idries Shah covers an extraordinary diversity of Sufi ideas and activities in many countries and cultures. Included in the volume are papers on Sufi Principles and Learning Methods; Ritual, Initiation and Secrets in Sufi Circles; and Key Concepts in Sufi Understanding. The volume stands as a clear and simple handbook to many facets of Sufi study and thought. Shahs introduction begins, The object of Sufi spiritual teaching can be expressed as: to help to refine the individuals consciousness so that it may reach the Radiances of Truth, from which one is cut off by ordinary activities of the world.

103 PAGES 307 PAGES A Veiled Gazelle, as the great mystic Ibn Arabi explains in his Interpreter of Desires, is a subtlety, an organ of higher perception. Sufi experientialists refer to the activation of these centres of awareness as the awakening of real knowledge of Truth beyond form. A Veiled Gazelle considers the symbolic and instrumental employment of its literature in Sufi studies. Seldom didactic, and never meant only as entertainment, such works are regarded as some of the worlds greatest and most important writing.

Assembled by Idries Shah, The World of the Sufi is a comprehensive collection of learned essays and papers on the subject of Sufi thought. One of the books attractions is the way that it considers central questions and areas of study from different angles. Sufi literature, the use of humour, and Sufi communities in various cultural settings, are some of the many subjects discussed. In addition, experts in their fields comment on areas such as Sufism and Psychiatry, Indian Thought and the Sufis, and Therapy and the Sufi. Among the books contributors are Idries Shah, Doris Lessing, Peter Brent and Dr. Arthur J. Deikman.

The Book of Ecstasy The Halnama of Arifi TRANSLATED BY R. S. GREENSHIELDS

His Bostan, The Orchard, is one of the greatest of all Sufi Classics. Together with his Gulistan, it is regarded as a supreme accomplishment of Sufi thought. It contains a richness of material and beauty of poetry which are almost unparalleled. The Bostan is a mine of proverbs, quotations and practical wisdom. It contains moralistic aphorisms and teaching stories, and is recognized by eminent Sufis as concealing the whole range of the deepest Sufi knowledge which can be committed to writing.

122 PAGES The influence of Al-Ghazzali upon Christian and Islamic thinkers of the Middle Ages is becoming more and more widely documented. Known as The Proof of Islam, Al-Ghazzali finally won acceptance for Sufism in Islam; his methods of argument and analysis are much discussed in both East and West. Indeed, some Arab scholars maintain that Al-Ghazzali was one of the very purest Muslims who ever lived. The Alchemy of Happiness is Al-Ghazzalis own abridgement of his masterwork, The Revival of Religious Sciences.

A Fool of God:The Mystical Verse of Baba Tahir TRANSLATED BY E. HERON-ALLEN

58 PAGES The long-standing Sufi tradition of using suitable imagery to project experiences and teaching, has naturally caused great confusion among literal thinkers, particularly in the West. The great Arifi of Herat produced a cosmological tour-de-force and literary sensation by writing his great mystical poem entirely in terms of the game of polo. This important work, written in just two weeks and cherished for centuries as a classic, is presented here with the Persian text and an explanatory introduction. Much of its interest is referred to in the conclusion of a Dervish master, that it is really the book of the fallacies of raw expectation of the limitations of meditation alone, and of the incompleteness of excitement.

72 PAGES One of the earliest Sufi poets in Persian, Baba Tahir is famous for his use of rustic dialects rather than polished style in his expression of mystical love-poetry. He is one of the four great pioneers of the quatrain (the others were Abu Said, Ansari and Omar Khayyam), and his songs are still widely sung and revered in Central Asia. Known as The Naked, because of his disdain for outward show, Baba Tahir was visited by Sultan Tughrul Beg. Subsequently, it is believed that he granted the Sultan victory over his enemies, so long as the ruler upheld justice. Perhaps for this reason, the recitation of his work is imagined by some to grant the hearts desire to an honest man.

243 PAGES 103 PAGES The Gulistan, or Rose Garden, of Saadi of Shiraz is one of the best known and celebrated books written in the Persian language. In his introduction, Idries Shah says, Like all Sufi materials, Saadis Rose Garden contains information, and is formulated, to gain acceptance in the culture in which it is projected and is an instrument of enlightenment and experience. Among Sufis, reading Saadi undoubtedly produces insights. In Sufi school usage, first the exterior meaning is absorbed, then the secondary meaning. This tension between the two levels, can lead to the ability to see further ranges of significance, until the stage may be reached when we find understanding beyond verbalisation.

The Treatise of the Pool is a remarkable, previously unpublished, Sufi text by the grandson of the celebrated philosopher Moses Maimonides. A translation of AlMaqala al-Hawdiyya which is housed in Oxfords Bodleian Library, the manuscript is a rare and valuable work from a thirteenth century Jewish Sufi. In his foreword, Dr Fenton notes that: Due perhaps to the persistence of family tradition, Obadyahs doctrine exhibits many analogies with, and may perhaps elucidate obscurities in, the system of his illustrious forebear. At the same time it is certainly not without intrinsic value in itself, since Obadyahs philosophical preoccupations differ markedly from those of his grandfather. To be sure, his system, couched in a peculiar Judeo-Arabic idiom, is permeated with a philosophical mysticism that owes much to the influence of Sufism.

They stand comparison in wit, construction and piquancy with the finest stories of any culture, yet their true function as Sufi teaching stories is so littleknown in the modern world, that no technical or popular terms exist to describe them. The material in Tales of the Dervishes is the result of a thousand years of development, during which Dervish masters used these and other teaching stories to instruct their disciples. The tales are held to convey powers of increasing perception unknown to the ordinary man.

These questions and more are answered in Idries Shahs remarkable volume World Tales, which is subtitled, The extraordinary coincidence of stories told in all times, in all places. In his introduction, Shah remarks, Working for thirty-five years among the written and oral sources of our world heritage in tales, one feels a truly living element in them which is startlingly evident when one isolates the basic stories; the ones which tend to have travelled farthest, to have featured in the largest number of classical collections, to have inspired great writers of the past and present.

In the modern world, the subject of religion assumes an ever-growing importance, despite a widely-held view to the contrary. On the one hand, there is the evidence of a strong impulse towards ecumenism on the part of the established religions, and on the other, the very widespread trend among individuals towards seeking out and following religious beliefs and practices of a much less formal and less organized kind. The Nature of Religious Man is the report of a major symposium organized by the Institute for Cultural Research, designed to bring together the realms of tradition and experience in many aspects of world religion.

Constantly quoted throughout the Middle East, and widely read ever since, The Dabistan gives an excellent insight into what Sufis of the time gave out as their teaching, and what scholars and others thought of them. It well vindicates its prefatory phrase: containing what has been reported by those who know what is manifest, and see what is concealed; as well as those who are attached to exterior forms, and by those who discern the inward meaning without hatred, enmity and scorn, and without taking a part for the one, or against the other side of the question.

Critics and general readers have for decades been excited, intrigued, baffled and entertained by the work of the great Argentinian writer Jorge-Luis Borges. In his books and stories, ranging across the traditions of the East and West, something elusive was constantly noted as appearing and vanishing: providing a sense of direction, only to disappear, as if some guiding principle was nudging the reader towards a perennial area of self-discovery. Professor de Garayalde, intrigued by correspondences between references in Borges work and current projections of ancient thought, produced the first report linking the Sage of the West with the thinkers of the Eastern tradition: about which Borges himself has said we must acquire what we can.

AL-GHAZZALI, Abu Hamid
BORN IN THE year 1058 in eastern Persia, Al-Ghazzali was a philosopher and Sufi mystic, author of numerous books, and a man of pothymathic ability. He wrote on conditioning, indoctrination, and obsession, and his teachings had a significant influence on both Islamic and Christian thinkers of Medieval times.
