Apogee Impose

Folding Schemes
At A Glance:
Apogee Impose bases the page arrangement of bound work on a high level plan called a Folding Scheme. This section explains how to manipulate them or create your own.

Applies To:
Apogee Impose

How It Works:
When CIP4, the governing body of the JDF specification, released JDF Stripping, they identified over 85 folding combinations for press sheets with counts ranging from two to 64 pages. Apogee Impose includes this folding catalog as the basis for bound impositions. Additionally you have the ability to edit them or create your own. A folding scheme contains only page orientation and numbering sequences, which means that unlike a traditional imposition template, the same pagination can be used with a variety of press sheet and finished page size combinations. Page dimensions, press sheet size, gutters, margins, marks and other imposition elements are added elsewhere in Apogee Impose.

For more information about the CIP4 fold specifications, please refer to the CIP4 Pagination Catalog. For the purposes of this discussion we will be referring to default folding schemes to indicate the folding schemes that are shipped by default with Apogee 7. You must use a Windows client and will need to have a minimum of Administrator privileges to work with the Folding Schemes resource.

Accessing the Folding Schemes

Folding Schemes are an Impose resource. To modify or create a folding scheme, launch a Windows Apogee Prepress client and go to System Overview > Impose TP and double click the Folding Schemes resource.

To make any modifications to the folding schemes, you need to unlock the resource at the bottom of the dialog.
CAUTION: As with other Apogee Impose resources there are no save buttons. Changes that you make are immediate and affect the software globally. Make certain that your edits are deliberate and lock the resource when you are finished. You are strongly advised to back-up your imposition resources regularly.

Sets are a handy way to limit the scheme selections in an imposition. For example, you may want to make a set for a specific web press because of a folder configuration or based on a customer due to a type of work you do. When making a new folding scheme set you could add one from scratch ( ) or duplicate an existing set ( ) and modify it. Note that if you create a new set, all folding schemes are enabled as a default.

The Folding Schemes resource is divided into three sections. On the left is the Set list which allows you to selectively enable and disable various folding schemes for Auto Impose. All folding schemes are available for use when using Manual Impose. The middle column shows the various classifications of folding schemes by page count and the top pick for each one. Using the screen shot above, an 8 page signature would use the F8-7 scheme as a default in Auto Impose. When using Auto Impose, you can override the fold scheme selection and choose another enabled one from the set. A black check mark next to a classification means that all schemes in that category are enabled for use in the set; a gray check mark indicates that only some of the available schemes are enabled for use in the set; a white box next to the classification indicates that none of the schemes are enabled for use in the set. The right hand section shows all available folding schemes in a selected classification. You can control which schemes are enabled for use by checking them on or off. You can also set the top pick in the category by using arrows ( ) to move the desired scheme to the top of the list.

Interpreting a Folding Scheme

The default Folding Schemes included with Apogee Impose are named after the CIP4 naming convention. The structure of the name is: F(page count)-(iteration) For example, F16-7 indicates that it is a folding scheme for a 16 page imposition and that it is the seventh identified iteration of that classification.

When you look at a folding scheme you will notice the folding sequence is expressed as a series of fractions and arrows.

An up arrow ( ) indicates a fold from bottom to top or from left to right. A down arrow ( ) indicates a fold from top to bottom or from right to left. A fraction ( ) indicates the amount of the fold relative to the overall sheet dimension. A plus sign ( ) indicates a direction change. Green numbers ( ) indicate the fold is from left to right or right to left. Red numbers ( ) indicate the fold is from gripper to tail or tail to gripper. In the lower right quadrant of the Folding Schemes resource you will see a diagram of the fold you selected.

Red corners ( ) indicate the lay of the sheet on delivery. Solid = top, faded = bottom. The yellow page ( ) indicates the low folio of the signature. A page with a blue corner ( ) indicates the high folio of the signature. Folds ( ) are numbered in order and colored to match other diagram information. Fold direction and amount ( ) are shown with the fold number and color coded. Lines indicate folds ( ) and are color coded. Solid = pages on top before the fold, dashed = pages on bottom before the fold.

Folding Schemes Are Global

It is important that you understand that a folding scheme has one unique name across all the sets in which it is enabled or disabled. If you delete a folding scheme it is deleted across the entire system and effects not only other sets, but jobs as well. For this reason you need to be particularly careful when editing or deleting folding schemes. Rather than deleting a default scheme that you dont want to use, consider unchecking it in your set to prevent it from being selected. Instead of modifying a default folding scheme, try duplicating it and editing the copy. Also remember that any Windows Apogee Prepress client that has Administrator privileges has the ability to edit Apogee Impose resources. You are strongly advised to regularly back up your Apogee Impose resources. Folding schemes may be individually exported and imported.

Duplicating a Folding Scheme
If you want to edit one of the default folding schemes, the safest way is to work on a copy and disable the original when youre done. To copy a folding scheme, select one in the right hand list and then click the duplicate button. Now you can edit the copy without worrying about modifying the default folding scheme.

Creating a New Folding Scheme

You can also create a folding scheme from scratch if youd rather. To do so, click the new ( ) button. Give the folding scheme a name and optionally a description. Then set the columns and rows for the imposition. You are now ready to edit the pagination.

Editing the Pagination of a Folding Scheme

Regardless of whether you duplicate a folding scheme or create a new one, editing the pagination sequence is the same procedure. There are three ways to edit the pagination: type the page numbers in each cell, use the auto numbering tool or manually edit the folding sequence.

To enter the page numbers in the cells manually, select the I-beam tool ( ), click in a cell and type a number. Apogee will automatically mirror the corresponding page number on the opposite side of the imposition. Repeat until you have the imposition completely numbered.
You can clear the current pagination at any time by clicking the Reset button on the left hand side of the Folding Scheme editor.

To automatically number the cells, select the Auto Number tool and ( ) hover over a cell in the grid. Apogee will show a page number, starting with 1, at the end of the pointer. Move the pointer to the appropriate cell and click to set the page. Apogee automatically mirrors the corresponding page number on the other side of the sheet. Move the cursor to the cell for the next number shown by the pointer and click to set it. Repeat until the imposition is completely numbered.

To manually specify the folding sequence, click the Edit Sequence button at the bottom of the Folding Scheme editor.
Regardless of what method is used to create a pagination, Apogee creates a logical folding sequence. You can also use the Edit Sequence dialog to manually modify an existing fold pattern.

Click on an up or down button and then a fold amount. To change direction, click the Change direction button. Continue until the folding sequence is complete, then click OK.

Click the Save button when you have finished making your changes. If Apogee determines that the folding sequence is not physically possible, it will not allow you to save the folding scheme until you correct it.

Apogee will not allow you save an impossible folding scheme. Each Folding Scheme Set can have a unique Top Pick.

Setting the Top Pick in a Classification for Auto Impose

You can set the default Folding Scheme for a classification within a set for Auto Impose. You can override the Auto Impose To do so, make sure it is enabled with a check mark and use the arrow buttons to move it Top Pick selection in the Imposition Editor with any scheme that has a to the top of the list in that classification.
check mark next to it.

Deleting a Folding Scheme
You can delete a folding scheme if you do not need it.

Bear in mind that when you delete a Folding Scheme you affect not only the current Folding Scheme set, but all other sets, potentially their top picks and production jobs as well.

Why is this Important?

Folding Schemes are the heart of Apogee Impose and really help distinguish it from other imposition packages. Rather than forcing you to create a template for each sheet and page size combination, Folding Schemes allow you the freedom of using a high level expression for the arrangement of a press sheet that is independent of the specifics of a job. This means that you have fewer files to manage and less opportunity to make a mistake by picking up the wrong template. While many will find the default CIP4 folding schemes to be sufficient, Apogee gives you the ability to edit or create your own schemes giving you a good balance between convenience and flexibility.

Instead of deleting a folding scheme, consider disabling it from the set or sets to which it doesnt apply. Its a safer approach and offers you a way to recover in the event you make a mistake.
