President’s Message
What an exciting time to be involved in RAA! Wonderful
shows and events coming up! The Multi-Media Mini Show
will be housed in our own Gallery/Art Center for the first
time! Note that this is a juried show open to all California
artists. There will not be take-ins for member shows as
usual. You are, of course, encouraged to enter your work for
jurying. Read about it inside this newsletter.
Please note that a notice in the gallery that indicated
“no crafts” was a mistake. Everything else on the notice
was correct. So be assured fine crafts are still accepted in
member shows per the Gallery Agreement.
I’m happy to say we sold every last one of the heavy metal
chairs! And we now have very manageable ones that set-up
easily.
Volunteer opportunities abound. I invite new members
and current members to contact me about filling some of
RAA needs. In particular, we are seeking someone who has
time and knowledge of bookkeeping to volunteer alongside
our treasurer and eventually take on the big responsibility.
Could it be you? Could it be someone you know?
Both Boards and Chairs will be experiencing a Strategic
Planning seminar next month that will help us determine
our future direction. We look forward to a vision by
consensus, under the able leadership of Milan and Linda
Hamilton, of Participation Works, Inc. We thank them for
their willingness to work with us.
See page 5 for Annette Weiss’ article of a “special art movie
showing” that she is putting together in March with the
film’s director/artist, George Gallo. The movie: “Local
Color,” features a story about his life and struggle. Check

about him and the movie that will be here at the Krikorian
theater.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS
RAA artists have once again been invited to participate in
this year’s Inland Orange Conservancy Celebrate Citrus
Grove Walk. Last year our artists set up their easels in the
orange grove on the corner of Highland Ave. and Cajon
St. in Redlands. Each artist set up a display of their citrus
related art and then headed off to do some plein aire
painting in the grove. Patty Mariano was on hand to sell the
art work to customers strolling through the grove, learning
about our citrus heritage and sampling numerous varieties
of citrus from the Inland Empire. The event is sponsored
by the Inland Orange Conservancy and the founder, Bob
Knight, asks for only a 5% commission on sales.
The date for the Grove Walk is April 12, 2008. For more

$10,000 MATCHING GRANT DONATED FOR
SOLAR PROJECT
RAA’s solar electric dream was boosted by a matching
grant of $1 for $2, from Larry Harvill and Evelyn Ifft. They
will donate up to $10,000: $1 for every $2 RAA raises.
RAA is trying to raise $30,000 to add to the $17,400 grant
promised by the California Department of Energy to cover
the total $56,400 cost of the 40 panels for the Gallery roof.
The goal of this challenge grant is to raise the needed funds
by June 1st so we can have the system installed before the
California Department of Energy grant expires on June 15.
To date, there has been $950 donated for this purpose.
The RAA Board of Directors will be asking for community
support as well as from all RAA members.
The Gallery’s general lighting, spotlights and the 2 heating-
air conditioning units are in use 6 days/week, 7 hours/day

JOAN McKASSON -
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 • 7pm
Joan McKasson is a nationally recognized watercolor
painter, juror and an enthusiastic instructor of creative
watercolor and water-media workshops. Her paintings find
their base in the reaction to free-flowing pigments and
the abstract patterns created in this approach. She teaches
workshops throughout the U. S. and internationally.
She is a signature member of Rocky Mountain National
Watermedia Society, Watercolor West, Western Federation
of Watercolor Societies and an elected member of the San
Diego Artists Guild. McKasson has exhibited in national
and international exhibits.
We are all looking forward to this great program which
will be a Floral Watercolor Demonstration.
FEBRUARY WORKSHOP with

Wednesday, February 27, 2008 • 9am - 3pm

This workshop will be “Create Colorful, Vibrant Florals
in Watercolor.” Translating the beauty of flowers into
expressive, vibrant, colorful paintings is the goal of
this class. You will learn methods to help you trust
your creative instincts and use the natural free-flowing
characteristics of watercolor as a genesis to lead you on
a creative journey. Ways to enrich your floral paintings
with exciting color, creative pattern and texture will be
demonstrated. Techniques to be presented include painting
wet-into-wet, glazing, negative and positive shape-making
and the application of collage paper. Bring photographs,
sketches or flowers for inspiration. A supply list will be at
the gallery with the sign-up sheet.

JUROR: Patrick Merrill
Patrick Merrill is a Master Printer and practicing
artist. He has been exhibiting since 1972 in numerous
solo shows and has been included in significant group
shows in both national and international galleries and
museums.
Serving as the Publicity and Exhibition Director for
the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art
(1990-2000), Merrill curated over 40 exhibitions. He
was instrumental in the expansion of the center in the
Artist’s Village in downtown Santa Ana.
In 1997, Merrill accepted the position of Director and
Curator for W. Keith and Janet Kellogg University

already decreased the electric bill from $5,300 in 2006 to
$3,200 in 2007 — a 40% decrease. Since electric rates are
expected to increase 5 to 10% annually, the cost of solar
should pay for itself in 8-9 years. The system is warranted
for 20 years with a 40-year life expectancy.
RAA NEWS & Events
Art Gallery at Cal Poly Pomona. While at the Kellogg
Art Gallery, Merrill has built the annual competition,
Ink & Clay, from a minor regional to a major nation
competition. Most past exhibits were curated around
cultural and social issues, and brought contemporary
Chinese art to the Inland Empire before the Chinese
became trendy. The next exhibition, “East in Eden” will
examine and interpret the Pomona Valley through the
eyes of 24 of its contemporary artists.
Merrill was part of the founding Board of the T.H.
Pendergast California Parole Museum where he has
curated all the exhibitions from 2001. The most
significant was a meticulously researched exhibit on
the First 100 Years of Parole that was installed both at
the museum and in the public hallways in front of the
Governor’s office.
Merrill, also owner of Pat Merrill Fine Art Prints in Covina,
specializes in etchings, woodcuts, collographs and
monoprints. The shop is a fully equipped printmaking
facility where workshops for both the professional and
focused amateur can be scheduled on a regular basis.
Merrill is currently working with master ceramist,
Stephen Horn on developing ways in which paper
lithography can be used to print oxides directly to the
clay before firing providing a beautiful integration of the
two mediums.
GALLERY SITTERS NEEDED Please volunteer to sit the
Gallery during the Mini Show. Regular days and hours.
The Gallery needs to be staffed even if your art was not
juried in. This is a great opportunity to bring in visitors
to see the show. The extra publicity will help us all for
future exhibits.

Larry and Evelyn are passionate about solar energy,
especially in sunny California. Their home system has been
operating for 3 years and has reduced the generation of
greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere by 26,000
tons, in addition to the electric cost reduction!

Cameron. The workshop will be led by Judith Sparhawk, an

A free, no-obligation Orientation Meeting will be held on

Featured Artist: Rosemary Hite
Featured Artist Reception, Sunday, January 27, 2 - 4pm
Rosemary Hite, co-founder and past president of the
Redlands Art Association, will show watercolors at the
association gallery as featured artist for three weeks,
starting Jan. 27.
A reception is planned for Sunday, Jan. 27 from 2 to 4pm.
Hite is a signature member of Watercolor West and a
member of Artists Northwest in Washington State. She has
studied with Milford Zornes, Robert E. Wood, and at the
Jade Fon workshops in Pacific Grove.
She was arts editor on the San Bernardino Sun for
several years, and then taught watercolor at Yucaipa and
Redlands Adult Education schools. She graduated from the
University of Redlands, and holds a teaching credential in
secondary education.

TECH TIPS
■ From Sandy Davies:
Smudges or fingerprints on
your painting mat? Use a very very fine sandpaper
to remove surface blemishes.
Had to scrub out paint from your watercolor
paper? Before you repaint, let it dry and then
burnish the area with the flat of your fingernail
to restore the finish on the paper. If left rough,
the paint will soak in and make a dark area.
