Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest editi on, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australi an Standards and related publications wil l be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australian
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publi cati ons, new editi ons
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australi an Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 89145.

PREFACE
This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Industrial Hose under the
direction of the Committee RU/-, Standards for the Rubber Industry to supersede AS 2283—1979,
Elastomeric hose and hose assemblies for steam-cleaning machines.
A test for ozone, and a requirement for high pressure hose (21 MPa) have been included in this edition.
Also, the range of internal diameters has been modified to allow for hoses larger than those dealt with
in the previous edition.
In the preparation of this Standard, account was taken of US Military Specification MIL-H-28596B,
Hose and hose assembly, rubber, steam.

FOREWORD
In railway operations, the steam cleaning of heavy oil deposits from locomotive and general mechanical
parts is a heavily demanding activity, and problems have occurred leading to an unsatisfactory short
life for some types of steam hoses. Hence this Standard covers hose for conveying water, steam and
cleaning agents up to a temperature of 200°C.
Oils, solvents, cleaning chemicals and hot, strong sunlight that occur in the work area reduce the life
of elastomeric hose; thus requirements for resistance to detergents, oils and ozone have been included,
which should help prolong the working life of hoses.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Elastomeric hose and hose assemblies for steam-cleaning machines

SECTION 1 SCOPE AND GENERAL

1.1 SCOPE This Standard specifies requirements for elastomeric hose and hose assemblies for use
with steam-cleaning machines and through which may pass water, steam, detergent solutions and other
cleaning agents or mixtures of these materials up to a temperature of 200°C.
The Standard applies to hose suitable for steam which may become slightly superheated through the
operation of the machine, but is not suitable for solutions containing organic solvents.
NOTE: For hose to be used wit h organic solvents, consultati on with the manufacturer is advised.
1.2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this Standard:
AS
1180 Methods of test for hose made from elastomeric materials
1180.2 Method 2: Tensile strength and elongation

1180.3 Method 3: Accelerated ageing

1180.4B Method 4B: Ply adhesion — Autographic method
1180.5A Method 5A: Hydrostatic pressure — Burst test
1180.5B Method 5B: Hydrostatic pressure — Proof test
1180.5D Method 5D: Hydrostatic pressure — Leakage test
1180.7C Method 7C: Resistance to steam
1180.7D Method 7D: Resistance to detergent
1180.7E Method 7E: Resistance to oil
1180.7F Method 7F: Resistance of lining and cover to ozone
1180.11 Method 11: Hose and coupling compatibility — Tensile method
1257 Bore sizes, test pressures and tolerances on lengths of elastomeric hose
1.3 DESIGNATION Hose shall be designated according to its maximum working pressure, which
shall be 0.4 MPa, 0.7 MPa, 1.0 MPa or 21.0 MPa, according to the intended use.
1.4 MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION
1.4.1 Hose construction The hose shall consist of a lining, reinforcement, and an outer cover
vulcanized together in a uniform manner. Requirements for the lining, reinforcement and outer cover
shall be as follows:
(a) Lining The lining shall consist of a natural or synthetic elastomer. It shall be of uniform thickness,
be free from air-holes, porosity, joins and other defects, and be resistant to heat and detergent so
that it will comply with the requirements of Clause 2.5.
NOTE: The defects described in Clause 1.4.1 cannot be completely quantif ied. Where the presence or frequency of any
of these are considered to be of concern, arr angements should be made between the purchaser and the manufacturer. This
may be achieved by the provision of acceptable type samples or methods of test.
(b) Reinforcement The reinforcement shall consist of one or more plies of woven or cord textile
fabric, yarn or wire, thoroughly bonded together. The reinforcement may be applied by braiding,
wrapping or spiral winding.
(c) Outer cover The outer cover shall consist of an oil-resistant elastomer which shall comply with
the requirements of Clause 2.5. The surface finish may be smooth, cloth marked, fluted or
corrugated.
Where required for the purpose of improving adhesion of the rubber cover to the carcass, or for
heat-resistance purposes, a layer of fabric may be included under the cover.
1.5 DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES Nominal hose sizes, based on the internal diameter, shall
be as follows:
6.3 mm, 10.0 (9.5) mm, 12.5 mm, 20.0 (19.0) mm, 25.0 mm, 31.5 mm, 40 (38) mm, 50 mm and
63 mm.
The tolerances on hose sizes shall be as specified in AS 1257.
NOTE: The values in parentheses are non-preferred ones which provide a concession for existing manufacturi ng conditi ons
and are necessary for a period of transit ion. These values also accommodate existing fi tt ings.
When examined visually, the bore shall be concentric with the outer cover. The bore shall be free from
raised spots and lumps so that a steel ball having a diameter equal to the minimum allowable bore size
less one-half of the minus tolerance (see AS 1257) can easily pass through the hose while subjected
to a pressure of 70 kPa.
