Passover

The Celebration of Freedom!

Haggadah compiled by Serene E. Velasco

Removing Chametz Exodus 12:19: Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses; for whoever eats what is leavened, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is an alien or a native of the land. Blessing: Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who hast sanctified us with Thy commandments, and commanded us concerning the removing of the leaven.

For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

The Seder Begins Kindling Blessing: Blessed art Thou, Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us through faith in Yeshua the Messiah, the Light of the World. In His name we kindle Passover lights. The Four Cups Wine Symbol for ___ ___ ___

This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat. Let all who are needy come and celebrate the Passover. At present we are here; next year we hope to be in Israel. The Four Questions 4 Questions (Ma Nishtanah):

Why is this night different than all other nights?

1. "Why is it that on all other nights during the year we eat either bread or matzah, but on this night we eat only matzah?" 2. "Why is it that on all other nights we eat all kinds of herbs, but on this night we eat only bitter herbs?" 3. "Why is it that on all other nights we do not dip our herbs even once, but on this night we dip them twice?" 4. "Why is it that on all other nights we eat either sitting or reclining, but on this night we eat in a reclining position?"

Answer: We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lrd, our G-d, took us out from there with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm. If the Holy One, blessed be He, had not taken our fathers out of Egypt, then we, our children and our children's children would have remained enslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if all of us were wise, all of us understanding, all of us knowing the Torah, we would still be obligated to discuss the exodus from Egypt; and everyone who discusses the exodus from Egypt at length is praiseworthy. The Four Sons The Torah commands the Israelites four times to teach their children about the Exodus from Egypt. Therefore, in the Passover seder, there is a lesson about four sons: One wise, one wicked, one simple and one who does not know how to ask a question. What does the wise son ask? "What do all these laws mean which God has given us?" You should tell him about all the symbols and laws of Passover. What does the wicked son say? "What does this drudgery mean to you?" To you and not to him. Since he excludes himself from his people, if he was there, he would not have been redeemed.

What does the simple son say? "What is this?" You should say to him, "With a strong hand the LORD took me out of Egypt, from the house of slavery." And the son who is unable to ask, you must teach: "It is because of what the Lord did for me when I went free from Egypt." Exodus 13:8-10 8 On the seventh day you must explain to your children, I am celebrating what the LORD did for me when I left Egypt. 9 This annual festival will be a visible sign to you, like a mark branded on your hand or your forehead. Let it remind you always to recite this teaching of the LORD: With a strong hand, the LORD rescued you from Egypt. 10 So observe the decree of this festival at the appointed time each year. Maggid (Retelling the Story) READER 1: The Israelites were already in the land of Egypt. They became fertile and multiplied and increased very greatly, so that the land was filled with them. A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph, and imposed great labor and hardship on the Israelites. But the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased and spread out. The king then ordered that all newborn baby boys be killed. The Pharaoh charged all his people, saying "every boy that is born you shall throw into the Nile, but let every girl live."

READER 2: A Levite woman conceived and bore a son and hid him for three months. After that time, she prepared a wicker basket and laid the child in the basket and placed it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the Nile and saw the basket among the reeds and had her slave girl fetch the basket. The Pharaoh's daughter took pity on the child and made him her own son. She named him Moses, explaining, "I drew him out of water."

READER 3: Moses grew and had learned of his heritage. After witnessing an Egyptian beating an Israelite, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When Pharaoh learned of the matter, he sought to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. He arrived in the land of Midian, where he married his wife, Zipporah.

READER 4: A long time had gone by and the king of Egypt died. The Israelites were groaning under bondage and cried out to God. God heard their cries. God appeared to Moses in a burning bush telling him that he would use Moses to lead His people out of Egypt into a land "flowing with milk and honey." So Moses returned to Egypt and Moses took the rod of God with him. READER 5: Moses and his brother Aaron went to the Pharaoh to ask for the release of their people. But the Pharaoh's heart was hardened against the Israelites and would not release them from the bondage of slavery. Each time the Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, the land of Egypt came under a great plague. With the tenth and most awful plague, the heart of Pharaoh would be pierced. Ten Plagues: Blood. Dayenu! If He had merely brought us out from Egypt, and had not carried out judgments against them If He had merely carried out judgments against them, and not against their idols If He had merely destroyed their idols, and had not smitten their first-born If He had merely smitten their first-born, and had not given us their wealth If He had merely given us their wealth, and had not split the sea for us If He had merely split the sea for us, and had not taken us through it on dry land If He had merely taken us through the sea on dry land, and had not drowned our oppressors in it If He had merely drowned our oppressors in it, and had not supplied our needs in the desert for forty years If He had merely supplied our needs in the desert for forty years, and had not fed us the manna If He had merely fed us the manna, and had not given us the Sabbath day of rest

If He had merely given us the Sabbath, and had not brought us before Mount Sinai If He had merely brought us before Mount Sinai, and had not given us the Torah If He had merely given us the Torah, and had not brought us into the land of Israel If He had merely brought us into the land of Israel, and had not built for us the Temple As believers: If He had merely provided Yeshua as our Passover, and had not given us abundant life If He had merely given us abundant life, and had not promised us eternal life If He had merely promised us eternal life, and had not called us to serve Him If He had merely called us to serve Him, and had not given us the Holy Spirit If He had merely given us the Holy Spirit, and not promised us rewards Every time it seems that the Lord has given us enough, He always gives us more!

Ephesians 1:7-8 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. John 1:16 For of His fullness we have all received one blessing after another. Three Essentials Rabbi Gamaliel used to say: Whoever does not discuss the following three things on Passover has not fulfilled his duty: #1: Pesach, the Passover lamb Exodus 12:26-27: 26 And when your children ask you, 'What does this ceremony mean to you?' 27 then tell them, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.'" John 1:29: 29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! Passover lamb Symbol for ___ ___ ___ ___ ____

Yeshua entered Jerusalem on the tenth of Nisan as the lambs were brought into the households. This also identifies Him as the Pesach lamb (Lang). #2: Matzah, the unleavened bread Exodus 12:39: 39 With the dough they had brought from Egypt, they baked cakes of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves. Leaven in bread causes grain products to decay over time. Bread made without leaven, matzah, never decays. So it is with sin: it leads to death when it works in us. Without sin, we never decay (Lang, p. 37) Matzah Symbol for SIN___ ___ ___ ___NESS

#3: Marror, the bitter herbs (horseradish) Exodus 1:14: 14 They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly. Marror Symbol for ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___NESS

Blessing: Therefore, it is our duty to thank and praise, pay tribute and glorify, exalt and honor, bless and acclaim the One who performed all these miracles for our fathers and for us. He took us out of slavery into freedom, out of grief into joy, out of mourning into a festival, out of darkness into a great light, out of slavery into redemption. We will sing a new song before Him! Hallelujah! 2nd Cup: The Cup of Plagues (Makkot) Blessing; drink together Eat matzah, horseradish, haroset, egg (TIME TO EAT) Afikomen Symbol for YESHUAS D__ __ __ __ B__ __ __ __ __ R__ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ Mark 14:22 As they were eating, He took bread (matzah), blessed and broke it, gave it to them, and said, Take it; this is My body. 3rd Cup: The Cup of Redemption (HaGeulah) In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Luke 22:20 3rd Cup Symbol for YESHUAS ___ ___ ___ ___ ____

Cup of Elijah "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers Malachi 4:5-6a Cup of Elijah Symbol for ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ REDEMPTION

4th Cup: The Cup of Praise (Hallel) Matthew 26:29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom."

Psalm 118 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. 2 Let Israel say: "His love endures forever." 3 Let the house of Aaron say: "His love endures forever." 4 Let those who fear the LORD say: "His love endures forever." 5 In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free. 6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me? 7 The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies. 8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. 10 All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 11 They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off.

12 They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 13 I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. 14 The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. 15 Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: "The LORD's right hand has done mighty things! 16 The LORD's right hand is lifted high; the LORD's right hand has done mighty things!" 17 I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done. 18 The LORD has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter. 21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. 22 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone;

23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we bless you. 27 The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine upon us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you. 29 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.
