TCCC 20th Anniversary Maple

Nai Lert Park Hotel Bangkok, Saturday, October 2, 2010
ne of our great surprises of 2010 was the success of the Maple Leaf Ball. Not just because its always the premier Canadian social event of the year, but due to all of the outstanding support offered to this years ball by the TCCCs member companies, Embassy of Canada and the Canadian community. Its still hard to believe we sold out 3 weeks early, a clear indication that people were ready to party after riding out a year of political & economic turmoil. Adding to the special feel of this years ball was the fact that it was a celebration of the TCCCs 20th Anniversary as an officially registered Chamber of Commerce in Thailand. In 2010, we continued with our tradition of holding the ball at a member company venue. This year, the Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel was our host and if youre not aware, the Nai Lert Park is now managed by a Canadian company. The hotels General Manager, Mr. Torsten Pinter played a key role in assisting the Chamber with the planning and delivery of the event. Whenever a hotels GM takes a keen interest in delivering a solid brand statement, you can always count on a great outcome and the Swissotel Nail Lert Park delivered on all fronts. We sincerely thank Torsten for his support and lending an additional hand with the purchase of a company table at this years function. Upon arrival, the guests were promptly registered by the TCCC office staff and served champagne or coffee martinis as they wondered through a professionally executed silent auction offering diamonds to Harley rides. The chamber thanks Khun Sukanya Rattanavadee for creating the auction areas floral arrangements and Daniele & Don Lavoie for the detailed product presentations. The success of the chambers silent auction is always in great hands with this trio. Their professional support also allowed the 20th Anniversary Maple Leaf Ball silent auction to realize one of its most successful outcomes in many years. Included in the silent auction area was a project supported by the Chambers Community Services Programme, the Silk Weaving Project of Chaiyapoom Province. All the silk on sale was hand-made by the women of Baan Kwao Village and represented a rare opportunity to support a great cause. After enjoying an hour of free flowing champagne and coffee martinis, the guests then transitioned to a beautifully prepared ballroom where the Chambers President, Mr. John Casella and The Ambassador of

Canada, H. E. Mr. Ron Hoffmann, provided brief opening remarks prior to the playing of the Royal Thai and Canadian national anthems. During Johns welcoming presentation, he also took time to recognize this years long list of honored guests which included six of the TCCCs nine Presidents: o o o o o o o o o o H.E. Mr. Ron Hoffman, Ambassador of Canada and his wife, Andrea Hoffmann H. E. Mr. Douglas Gibson, Ambassador of South Africa and his wife, Pamela Mr. Nandor von der Lueher, Chairman of the Joint Foreign Chambers of Commerce in Thailand (JFCCT) and his wife Pailin. Mr. Sam Cohen TCCC President, 1994 & 1995 Mr. Peter van Haren TCCC President, 1998 to 2001 Khun Sirithorn Rutnin - TCCC President, 2002 Khun Kobsak Duangdee TCCC President, 2003 to 2005 Mr. Ron Livingston TCCC President, 2006 to 2009 Mr. John Casella Current TCCC President TCCC Presidents not present: Mr. Sean Brady - 1991, 1992 & 1997; Khun Chainarong Indharameesup - 1993; Khun Kiat Sittheeamorn - 1996

The 2010 ball saw the return of the ever popular and entertaining Mr. Dan Fraser as the evenings Master of Ceremony. We thank Dan for being up to the challenge and giving us a great show, particularly during the raffle and lucky draw phases of our event. In real life, Dan is a Director of Smiling Albino and if youre fortunate to have him as your guide on one of his companys many adventure trips,

we can guarantee youll have a great time. Along with two bottles of wine, the evenings menu started off with Tartar of Atlantic Salmon with Salsa of Papaya and Mango, Pumpkin Soup with Pumpkin Seed Oil followed by family style feast of Roasted Whole Turkey with Brussel Sprouts, Chestnut Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, Giblet Gravy, Fresh Cranberry Sauce and Honey Glazed Pumpkin. Rather than featuring our traditional dessert buffet, the desserts were served at each table on a high tea stand offering Apple-Apricot and Walnut Bread Pudding, Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Raspberry Cake, Pecan Maple Crunchy and Fresh Sliced Thai Fruits. We thank the Nai Lert Park for their excellent meal preparation and attention to detail, as well as Bistro 33 for providing additional wine sales and service support for this years ball. The evening was also accentuated with numerous activities & events including a trivia contest which culminated with a hockey shoot-out, Ambassador Hoffmann and Andrea kicking-off the first dance with the support of Childs Play, an anniversary cake cutting ceremony with Ambassador Hoffmann and all attending TCCC Presidents, a raffle, and lucky draw which offered a Grand Prize of two round-trip tickets from Hong Kong to Vancouver via Air Canada. Khun Sukanya Rattanavadee, TCCC Director and General Manager of Thai Phum Skylights, presented the Grand Prize to the lucky winner, Madame Andrea Hoffmann. After 9:30 PM, we also opened up the 20th Anniversary Shot Bar for those individuals who were really ready to party! To get our guests in the spirit of the evening, the bar served up free Bailey Comets, Coffee Martinis, Prairie Fire, Wild Turkey and Jack Sparrows. These drinks definitely helped to get everyone in a dancing mood, but little effort was required with a great band like Childss Play. The band selection is always an agonizing process given the wide age span of our members. However, Ali Fancy, TCCCs VP and Khun Mont Faichampa of Absolute Entertainment did a great job in bringing a new rhythm to this years ball. We thank them for taking on this challenging assignment and delivering a great compromise. Its important to note that major events like the Maple Leaf Ball are only possible with strong support of the Chambers members, friends and our steadfast sponsors. In closing, we wish to provide special recognition to following sponsors of the 20th Anniversary Maple Leaf Ball:

Thailands economic momentum gains yet to generate Inflationary fears

omestic demand gains amid solid export performance continue to characterize Thailands economy. With consumer confidence having surpassed early 2010 peaks, the interruption of normal business activity due to the earlier-in-the-year political turmoil seems long passed. Private household outlays continue to stage a strong recovery with retail and automobile sales highlighting a healthy advance in spending. The recovery in consumption is being paired by a double-digit comeback in capital and equipment outlays by firms and infrastructure spending on the part of the government. While foreign sales have yet to display significant deterioration from the rise in the currency, imports have been expanding at a higher pace naturally supported both by Thai baht (THB) strength and the healthy expansion in domestic demand. The pickup in local spending has yet to generate further inflationary pressures as price gains have slowed during the past three months. Notwithstanding the gain in economic momentum both headline and core inflation have trended downwards. Indeed, headline yearly inflation hovers currently

at 3% y/y, with core inflation at 1.1% y/y, remaining well within the central banks target range of between 0.5% and 3%. The Bank of Thailand (BoT) targets the annual core inflation rate. The BoT launched the process of monetary normalization last July, with backto-back increases in the benchmark interest rate to the current 1.75%. The monetary authorities recently decided to maintain the status, and given the favourable downtrend in price pressures we do not foresee further interest rate hikes in the near future. The Thai baht (THB) will continue to be supported by favourable interest spreads and the countrys attractiveness as a manufacturing hub within Asia. Persistent portfolio flows led to the central banks reinsertion of the 15% tax on foreign investors capital gains from holdings of bonds issued by the government or state owned enterprises. The THB together with the Australian dollar have been the strongest currencies within Asia after the Japanese yen. We expect the currency to close the year In the 29 per US dollar range. Well sort of, TCCC Board Member Derek van Pelt was born there, but his family moved to St. Catharines and Sudbury, before heading for Yorkton, Saskatchewan, when Derek was 10. Derek and family stayed in Saskatchewan until he set off for university in Texas, where he studied Management Information Systems.
his is where he first met Smiling Albino co-founder Dan Fraser. Dan had come to Thailand in 1995 to work for the Royal Family at Chitralada School through the Ambassador Foundation set up by their university. They met because a small contingent of Canadians at the school got together to play ball hockey on a semi-regular basis. It was the enthusiasm that Dan and fellow student Ted Rollins had for Thailand that originally drew Derek to the Land of Smiles.. In 1997, when Derek finished university he came to Thailand having applied to work for the Ambassador Foundation, hoping he would be accepted to teach at Chitralada

Siam wheels offers a wide range of 'high End" bikes for your riding enyoment

during his travels throughout the country and he was. At the end of 1998, having finished his year at Chitralada, Derek decided to stay in Thailand, so he set up his own business exporting silver from Thailand back to Canada. He then went to work for the Princeton Review in Seoul for a while. But he was drawn back to Thailand, and came back to work for travelguide.com, where he did web design. He stayed with that company until 2002 when he hooked up with a Swedish friend of a friend and went back into the export business. In 2007, Derek sold his half of the partnership to his business partner, just before he married his wife, Wanrada. The couple has a three-year-old son named Xander, and Derek has a step-daughter Nattamon, aged eleven.

Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway (sort of) Lookin' for adventure And whatever comes our way. Steppenwolf wrote the song, weve all hummed it in our head, and the rebel in all of us has yearned to live it. Well, Siam Wheels gives you the chance to live that dream. Formed in 2009, Siam Wheels is a club for people that love motorcycles but are in Thailand for a short period of time or infrequently. It offers the benefits of bike ownership without the hassles. Explaining his custom motorcycle business, Managing Director Derek van Pelt says, The nexus for this business is in the exotic car club model in Europe and in the U.S. featuring Lamborghinis, Ferraris & Maseratis, but I didnt have enough money to replicate that here, Ive always loved to ride motorcycles and Thailand is a great place to ride: the roads are good, the weather is excellent, and the people are friendly. Its very expensive to import a motorbike to Thailand (it can cost three times the price of a bike in North America or Europe), so an expat, who comes here on a one-year contract, and loves to ride motorcycles is going to pay the Harley Davidson dealer top dollar for a bike. Then hes going to ride the bike two or three times a month, say thirtysix times a year, then hes going to have to sell it when he moves on to his new position. By that time, the bike will have depreciated

10 Voyageur

and hes going to end up taking a substantial financial hit on it - and hes got to find someone to buy it as well. Siam Wheels is an alternative to all that and you dont have to worry about maintaining your bike either as we keep all our bikes in prime condition. A member makes a commitment to the club, which starts at Bt3,000 a month (Bt3,210 with VAT), and the member must commit to 12 months. That gets the member a certain number of points (entry level is 22 baht a point), then the bikes have prices in both weekday and weekend points. All you have to pay on top of that is the gas. When you join the club, you get a community immediately, you get guys to ride with you as we do at least a ride a month, and we can also network you into the Harley Davidson and Yamaha owners club rides. Derek stresses that Siam Wheels isnt a rental company you are getting bikes in excellent condition its just an alternative to ownership. He also says that your points dont expire and you can pay it forward that is you could use of three of your twelve months to take an immediate ride and then only be on the hook for nine months. All the bikes are insured and have a Bt20,000 deductible. Derek started with Harley Davidson motorcycles because as he says, I wanted one, and putting a business around it is a good way to explain it to my wife. Its also part of the pitch, because many wives wont let their husbands buy Harleys. Look at the

options; one, honey, I want a buy a bike its US$45,000; or two, honey, I want to join this bike club (at Bt3,210 a month) and get out of town once a month. Its much easier to sell the latter, while the first option will probably have you sleeping on the couch in short order. One recent Siam Wheels ride took members on a scenic overnighter to Pattaya led by a police escort. Its a club for people who like to ride, not a club for people who like to cheat death. A Siam Wheels trip goes with the traffic, maybe a little faster, but everyone

goes together, and if at some point the trip changes direction, one rider will always wait by the side of the road for the last rider to catch up and indicate the route the group has taken. Located on Chalerm Prakiet Road between sois 7 and 9 (near the UdomsukSrinakarin intersection), Siam Wheels provides easy access to the Bang-na Trad highway, so you dont have to fight the notorious Bangkok traffic just to start your ride. Derek says you can be in those rice fields in 20 minutes. The company has 12 bikes including a 1,450cc 2006 Harley Dyna Glide Street Bob, a 1,250cc Harley 2008 VRSCAW V-Rod, a 1,000cc 2005 Yamaha R1, a 1,000cc 2009 Yamaha RI, a 600 cc 2008 Yamaha R6; a 600cc 2008 Yamaha R6, two 644cc Kawasaki 2010 ER-6Ns, a 1,584 cc Harley Fat Boy, and the three-wheeled Can-Am Spyder, which is manufactured by Canadian company Bombardier Recreational Products. Derek says, Do what you like, and like what you do is my motto and Siam Wheels is a good way to do that. Siam Wheels is a motorcycle brotherhood, but not in the Hells Angels or Vagabonds kind of way. Its just a bunch of cool guys who dig bikes, and remember: girls love guys who have hot bikes.
