Figure 2- 1 Optical system block diagram (Projection process outline) l.Digital R/G/B signal is provided from a computer 1 or 2 to the main board. Analog signal (S-Video or Video signal) is provided to the main board through AU board. (Analog signal should be once changed into digital signal by the main board.) 2.Video signal (digital) is once stored in the video memory on the main board , then the driver board generates signals to drive the light valves R/G/B. 3.The light valves R/G/B are individual panels each others. They work to shut or transmit the lights from the light valve block. 4.The lights transmitted through the light valves will be combined the prism and projected through the projection lens unit.

2.2 POWER SUPPLY UNIT

The Power Supply unit includes DC regulator, inhale fan and interlock switch with lamp cover. The Power Supply unit generates the voltage for the control circuit (+3.3V,+W, +12V, +22V) and for the light source lamp (+65V) from AC input. PBS thermistor is installed on the side of the power supply inhale fan and is retained with a clamp on the power supply unit. It detects the temperature, if it senses overheat, it shuts off the regulator output via the main board. Although the outline of its function is shown below, please never disassemble the power supply unit at the field maintenance service.

* The Interlock switch is built for the safety purpose. The Interlock switch will shut the supply of AC power by opening the lamp cover at the bottom of main chassis. * The input signal from the safety switch is prepared for the protection of over heat. It shuts the supply of AC power with overheat condition.

(2) Outline of function * The Interlock switch is accordingly work with the lamp cover at the bottom of main chassis. It is normally at the ON position. It will shut the AC power by opening the lamp cover. * The cable of the power supply unit is connected to CN 800 on the main board. Additionally, the following items are connected to CN 800: the PWDS signal for the power on/off control, the DC output line, the lamp power on/off control signal (LPSTC), the background power (+3.3V) on/off signal (BACTA). Caution: If the AC power cable is still connected after the power is shut off, +3.3V background voltage is supplied to the main board via CN 800. The background voltage is subsequently supplied to the power on/off circuit, * The filter/rectification circuit work to neglect noise on the AC line and generate DC voltage for the regulator, * The regulator generates the various level of DC voltage as shown in the below table in the switching regulator. The regulator detects the voltage output level at the +5V line and feed back to the switching circuit to maintain the output level stable regardless the load variation. Each output voltage level is not the subject of adjustment.

NOTE : Protection is the transient detection type, it is recoverable with power on.

2-6

* The inhale fan is built for exhausting the heat generated in the power supply unit. (2) Outline of function 0 IC600 and related circuits are backed up with +3.3V which provided from power supply. (If the AC cable is connected to the AC source, power supply provides the +3.3V for back-up bias even if RS-361 is turned off condition.)

@ When the power is turned on with power button on the switch panel or remote to controller, the driver board resets the reset signal which is controlled by IC600, and the CPU reads the program from mask ROM and write it into SRAM. Then the CPU sets functions according to the program and indicates the initial image.

@ Three thermistors (LV Thermistor / Lamp Thermistor / PBS Thermistor) detects temperature. If the temperature exceeds pre-difined level, the thermistors send generates interrupted signal to the IC600 and shut off the power supply regulation.

@ Computer l/2 input signals (Analog or digital) are converted into analog signal at first, then converted to digital again with ADC.

0 Monitor output signal source is separated by two as follows. 1. Digital RGB from computer In l/2: Loop back via gate and driver. 2. Analog RGB from computer In l/2 Transferred to the ADC then loop back via D/A converter,

@ To display the data on the RS-361, received data are stored into the SRAM, then read out to the video controller via CPU.

0 Video input (S-Video / Video In) signal are ,provided via AU board. These input signal are converted to digital with A/D converter and stored into the SRAM.

* The RS-361 is provided with a timer circuit that controls the operating time of the light source valve. Its operation is described below. Lamp monitor state Light source state When the operating time of the light The lamp monitor continues to flash red and orange for 5 minutes after it is turned source valve exceeds 1900 hours. on. (The light source stays on) When the operating time of the light The lamp monitor flashes in green and orange. (The light source goes off) source valve exceeds 2000 hours. When the light source valve runs out The lamp monitor lights in red. before its life. If the above phenomenon is observed, it is necessary to replace the light source valve and reset the timer as follows: While holding on the [Tracking +] and [SYNC +] switches, press and hold the POWER switch until the three status lights (USER 1,2,3 lights) start flashing simultaneously in orange (for approx. 3 seconds). The temperature detection circuit is installed for overheat protection of the circuit section. If the temperature rise of the section is more than certain degrees, the circuit causes an interrupt to the CPU.

2.4 DRIVER BOARD

The driver board has two functions, one is for converting the R/G/B display signal from the main board into six states of analog signals (light valve driver signals) and another is for controlling the display image by referencing electrical correction data. The board is a subject of replacement as a optical engine in the maintenance service except the fuses on the board shown below. Please refer to the chapter 3(3-l(3)) for details. (1) Outline of function

The signals RD(O-7)/GD(O-7)/BD(O-7) output from the main board are once converted into analog signals by the D/A before output to the driver circuit for light valves. The timing signals output from the display controller are converted into the signals for light valves (LCD) by the D/A converter and LCCOM circuit before output to the valves. The filter/gate circuit is designed to reduce the noise influence on the display driver circuit. To reduce the impulse noise, input signals are provided to the filter circuit (Three level of filter circuits are presented). To reduce the effect of timing delay on the logic, gate circuit work as trigger circuit for each signal line (R/G/B) and unify the output timing. The flash ROM contains electrical correction data for image display. Correction data are read by display controller. And use for display timing generation, brightness / contrast / chroma and density control. Light valve driver circuit convert the input analog signals to the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) driver signals.

The interface signal lines for S-Video and Video In have not any circuits but noise filter circuits, therefore they output signals to the main board through the connector CN 101. Audio input signals from computer IQ (via Audio In l/Z) or from a video device (via Audio In L/R) are first input to the sound controller and amplified by the sound preamp!ifier, then are output to the Audio Out interface or the built-in speaker through the sound controller again. The sound controller performs the audio-signal output selection based on the SCL / SDA (serial data / clock) signals provided from the main board. The sound volume control performs the audio volume control with 8 levels (mute max.) based on the signals (SPAC O/l) from the main board.

2.7 FR BOARD
FR board includes the board for connecting a remote control receiver and the mouse / the serial interfaces of a host computer. The controller with 8-bit CPU and the mouse / serial switching circuit are installed on the board. CN 100 (Mouse / Corn 1) and CN 102 (Mouse / Corn 2) are multi-mouse connectors, therefore either a serial mouse cable or a serial cable (accessories) can be connected to them. If the cables are connected to them, the controller determines the cable types and switches the operation mode to apply the proper circuit (mouse or serial) to them. The optional remote control receiver can be connected to the remote control interface (J lOO).The receiver provides the same functions as the standard receptor board (FI / RI board). Without the receiver the remote controller is enabled to use within the limited area in front and rear. The receiver expands the controllable range for the remote controller.

Figure 2- 15 FR board

The signals from the receptor board (FI / RI board) and the optional remote control receiver are accepted by the controller (IC IOI), the infrared signals received from the remote controller are output under OR conditions to the main board through CN 101 and the connector board. When you connect the serial mouse cable to the interface, the relay circuit (IC 111 or IC 116C) is switched to be able to accept the mouse encoder signal and the button signal then the signals based on Tracking +/- button operation are output to a host computer through the controller. The signals are transferred through the host computers interface, you can control (remote mouse controlling) the host computer without its mouse. If the host computer with ELP kit option is connected to the interface through the serial cable, the relay circuit is switched depending on each operation, therefore the data transmission to the host computer and remote mouse operation by the remote controller are enabled. ELP kit option also enables the remote controller to draw lines

2.12 LAMP INNER HOUSING

This unit includes the DC drive light source lamp (15OW-65V), the connector for power supply and fuse board (FU board). The lamp fixed on the base of the lower case is user replaceable item (mfr. no. ELPLP02) you can purchase it at EPSON service center. The average brightness of the lamp is 400 Im (ANSI), but it reduces corresponding to its running hours. When the lamp is new, its brightness is approx. 450 Im (maximum). After running about 2000 hours, the lamp reduces its brightness to almost half of a new one. The fuse board (FU board) is provided to determine whether the lamp inner housing is installed, and to control the end of the lamp life (3000 hours). The connector for power supply is applied to receive the DC 65V current from the power supply unit, so its lead wire is connected to the lamp. The connector for the power supply upper face FU boars Light source lamp \ equipped on the base

Figure 2-28

Figure 2-29

1. The light source lamp

The brightness of the light source lamp reduces in proportion to its running hours as mentioned above. In this device the standard lamp life is 3000 hours. If you notice the lamp brightness reduces, we recommend you to replace the lamp inner housing even before 3000 hours. The total running hour of the light source lamp is written in EEPROM (IC 603: ST24W04FM6TR) on the main board. If the lamp is reaching or has reached the end of its life, IC 600 (M37732S4BFP) outputs some signals to control the following. 0. When the total running hour has reached 2900 hours (2900-3000) an orange and a red lamp indicators blink alternately. The controller (IC 600) on the main board has counted the total running hours and has written the running data in IC 603. The lamp will run only 100 hours after the orange and the red lamp indicators start to blink alternately, so you should replace the lamp as soon as possible. (If the lamp indicators

2-26

blink alternately from beginning, the lamp life is no more than 100 hours. Therefore the lamp life may be suddenly terminated.) 0 When the total running hour has reached 3000 hours, the fuse on the fuse board in the lamp inner housing is blown by LFUSE signal from IC 600 and the lamp is turned off, then the cooling down operation starts (the orange lamp indicator blinks). Afterward, even if you start up the device, the lamp will not run before you replace it with a new one. The figure 2-33 shows the control circuit.

2. Fuse board (FU board)

This is the board with rated 62 mA fuse. When the board is equipped in the device, the terminal sections placed on the both ends of this board touch the FC board installed on the base of the light guide unit. The cable of the FC board is connected to the connector CN 250 on the driver board, so the signal from FC board is sent to the main board via the connector CN 100. When the total running hour reaches to 3000 hours, IC 600 on the main board outputs LFUSE signal, so the fuse on this board is connected to the ground through a resistance (88 Q). Consequently, the fuse is blown and LLIFE signal is switched from High to Low. When LLIFE becomes Low, IC 600 switches LPCTL to High and shuts down the power for the lamp (DC 65V) from the power supply unit, and when the power is shut, LPST (LPFAL) becomes High, IC 600 detects the power off condition for the lamp and starts the cooling down sequence.

3.Replacing the lamp

Typically, the light from the projector lamp will start to dim after about 4000 hours of use. This indicates that it is time to replace the lamp. You can check the lamp life on the Setting Screen. Use only replacement lamp part number ELPLP02.

WARNING
Allow the lamp to cool down before replacing it. During use it become hot enough to burn you. Resetting the lamp timer After changing the lamp, you need to reset the lamp timer as follows: 1. Make sure the projector is switched off. 2. Hold down the [Sync +] and [Tracking +] buttons on the projector simultaneously and switch the projector on. 3. When the USER 1,2,3 lights start flashing, release the [Tracking +] and [Sync +] buttons. The three monitor lights indicate that the lamp timer has been reset.

2.13.1 Filter cover switch

This switch is installed in the lower case and interlocks with the tab of the filter cover. If you operate the projector with the filter cover open, the cooling fan absorbs external air to cool down the light bulb. Consequently, the air dust adheres to the light bulb and the prism, so the displayed image is degraded. For this reason the switch is installed. Therefore you can not turn on the projector, when the filter cover is open.

Figure 2-31 Filter cover switch The signal of the filter cover switch is connected to CN 802 on the main boatrd via CN202 on the CN board. In main board circuit, IC 100 generates the inter-1 rupt signal and outputs the power shut off signal to CN 800, so every regulating operati ions of the power supply unit are stopped. 2.13.2 Interlock switch This switch is installed on the side of the power supply unit and interlocks with the tab of the lamp cover. If you turn on the projector with the lamp cover open, the light source lamp (lamp inner housing) runs and generates the high heat. For replacing the lamp you open the cover. For this reason, the switch is installed to protect you from burn. Interlock switch

Figure 2-32 Lamp cover

Figure 2-33 Power supply unit

2-30

The interlock switch is installed on the AC power source line. Consequently, if the lamp cover is open, the AC power source is shut off and you can not turn on the power.

2.13.3 Safety switch This is the thermal switch for overheat protection installed on the lamp inner housing. lf
overheat condition is caused by the contamination of the exhaust fan, normally the lamp thermistor (listed in 2.15.4) temporarily shuts off the light source lamp to protect it from overheat. The safety switch is installed, considering the lamp thermistor trouble in overheat condition. - - ._.

Figure 2-34 Safety switch To the safety switch the power supply unit cable with fasten tab is connected. When the temperature rises to certain degrees, every regulating operations of the power supply unit are stopped and power is shut off. This switch runs once, you can not start up the power, before the temperature falls to certain degrees. In this case, you must also consider the lamp thermistor trouble or the main board trouble.

2.13.4 Lamp thermistor

This is the temperature detection thermistor installed on the lamp outer housing (near the safety switch). To protect the circumstances around the light source lamp from the overheat of the lamp, this thermister shuts off the power from the power supply unit, if the temperature rises to certain degrees (lower than safety switchs level). Lamp theyister

Figure 2-35 Lamp thermistor

2-31

The lamp thermistor is connected to CN 804 on the main board. When it becomes the overheat condition, in IC 600 it generates the interrupt signal and shuts off the power source output from the power supply unit via CN 800.

2.13.5 LV thermistor This is the temperature detection thermistor installed top the light bulb. If the cooling is not sufficient because of the cooling fan failure (installed at the bottom of the light valve) or filter contamination (installed at the top of the light valve), the power is shut off to protect the light bulbs from overheat. The thermal stability of the light bulb (Liquid crystal panel) is not so good. The power shut off control is the same as the lamp thermistors written in 2.15.4. LV thermister

2.13.6 PBS thermistor This is the temperature detection thermistor instailed on the side of the fan (attached to the power supply unit). If the circumstances around the power supply unit become the overheat condition by the abnormal fan or circuit condition, this thermistor shuts off the power. The power shut off control is the same as the lamp thermistors written in 2.15.4. , PBS thermister

Chapter 3
Disassembly and assembly

3.1

Disassembly and Assembly Procedures

This section explains how to disassemble the RS-361. The reassembly procedure is the exact reverse of the disassembly procedure.

(1) Preparatory Procedure

1) Remove any ring, wrist watch, cuff buttons, or other metal accessories that are likely to get in contact with the equipment. 2) Wear gloves. 3) Wear a wrist band and ground it. Place a ground mat. 4) Turn off the main unit and the host computer. 5) Unplug the power cord from the main unit and service outlet. (Even if the power is off condition, back-up bias is regulated and supplied to the circuit board when the power code is connected to the service outlet.) 6) Disconnect the interface cable from the main unit. 7) Clean the air filter, interface and case cover with a vacuum cleaner.

(2) Required tools and accessories

Prepare the tools and accessories listed in the table below.

(3) Limitation of disassembly (Optical engine handling)

The disassembly of the mechanical section is detailed in paragraph 3.2. The optical engine is one replaceable part. When you order the maintenance parts or request our repair service, perform works by the units listed in the table below. The optical components listed followings are required the mechanical alignment or display timing correction in the control circuit. (writing the image adjustment data)

3-1

These units are specified as @ Optical head unit Optical engine. 0 Prism unit (Treat as one replaceable part @ Light guide unit in the field maintenance.) @ Projection lens unit 0 Driver board * Do not disassemble the Optical engine. * Do not exchange any unit on the optical engine to the others. Projection lens unit (3-l) Mechanical adjustment 0 Optical Head Unit The alignment (height/left and right/concurrent) of the polarization plates (include R/G/B light valves) is applied in the factory. If the alignment is modified, clear color image will not be made, because of the color divergence. Caution: Do not apply any mechanical stress to the polarization plate, and also not loosen the screws. 0 Prism Unit To synthesize the light output from each polarization plate (include R/G/B light valves), the alignment (concurrent to the polarization plate) of the prism unit is applied in our factory. If the alignment is modified, clear image will not be made, because of the pixel divergence to R/G/B synthesizing and projection lens unit, being out of focus and color uniformity. Caution: Do not loosen the prism unit fixing screws. 0 Light guide unit The alignment of the light guide unit on the optical head unit is applied (gap and concurrent to the polarization plate) in our factory. If the alignment is modified, clear image will not be made, because of being out of the brightness uniformity on the display screen (brightness or chroma is not uniform on the screen.) In consideration of the alignment of the lens array and the mirrors, and also their combinations, the factory setting is applied to the light guide unit to support the best display performance. (If the alignment is modified or the location is changed, there comes distortion on the display screen, therefore clear image will nit be made.) Caution: Do not disassemble the light guide unit. If you remove the upper guide cover from the unit, the alignment of lenses or mirrors may be unintentionally changed and also dust may stick to the unit. Since RS-361 requires very precise adjustment, it can not be adjusted in the field.

@ Projection lens unit The alignment of the projection lens unit is applied (position and fixing torque) in our factory. If the alignment is modified, clear image will not be made, because of the pixel divergence. @ Electrical corrections (Driver board) Some parts in the mechanical section of the optical system require some mechanical adjustments mentioned above. In the control circuit (driver board), the output driver for the display signal is slightly different from the output driver of other device (Driver board) in individuality. The mechanical section itself of the optical system (e.g. light valves) must be electrically corrected. Therefore to obtain the best image, not only the mechanical adjustment but the electric correction is required. For this reason some correction values are written to Flash ROM of the driver board on factory shipping. For matching the optical system and electrical system, the electric correction is necessary. Consequently, the driver board and the optical block (consists of optical head / light guide unit) make one set. At the factory shipment, following correction data are stored in the Flash ROM on the driver board according to the specified optical engine. Gamma adjustment data Flicker adjustment data Ghost contrast adjustment data Sub contrast adjustment data For the writing correction values, an expensive, special device and also skillful engineer are necessary, therefore it can not adjust in the field. (3-2)Caution for field maintenance Observe the following procedure, when you repair. Otherwise, display quality is not guaranteed, and also EPSON repair service is not available. 0 Do not disassemble the block. (Do not loosen any screws.) 0 If either the optical block or the driver board becomes wrong, replace them in set. And when you send back them to us for repair, send back them in set (by optical engine). @ The optical block and the driver board make the optical engine set, so never change its combination (e.g. use only the driver board for the other repair parts).

3-3

(4) Precautions
Precautions given to the individual assembly and disassembly procedures. Read them carefully before starting the assembly or disassembly procedure. A set of general precautions are given below. As you disassemble the main unit, dust that is sticked to the internal fans and air filters is likely to migrate and contaminate the light valves R, G, and B which are the heart of the display mechanism, thus deteriorating the display quality. Accordingly, before reassembling, check the dust inside of the main unit and, if necessary, clean them with a vacuum cleaner. The light valves R, G, and B and circuit board assemblies are highly sensitive to static electricity. When you remove a light guide block or circuit board ,place it in an antistatic bag immediately. When you perform the assembly or disassembly operations listed below, check the pertinent unit and its surfaces for any dirt before reinstalling them. If the unit is found dirty, clean it. 1 .Removing the optical engine. 2Removing the lamp inner housing. 3.Removing the air filter frame. The speaker unit incorporates a permanent magnet. Keep it away from electromagnetic media such as floppy disks and magnetic cards. Handle the projection lens and light guide units with care as they are highly susceptible to vibration and shock. Do not try to disassemble any part (e.g., power supply unit) that is not covered in this manual.
