The cost of having a cardiac surgery done in Fiji by visiting surgical teams is almost three times lower than the cost of surgery done in Australia and New Zealand via private insurance. This was revealed in a study undertaken for the Ministry of Health by Centre for Health Information Policy and Systems Research (CHIPSR) through a Fiji Health Sector Support Program (FHSSP) grant. The study said cardiac treatment via a visiting team costs $17,615.15 while private insurance evacuation cost was $51,547.54. Ministry of Health spokesman Peni Namotu said the study was a comparative analysis undertaken by the Fiji National University which had put the Health Ministry in a good position to secure better and economical cardiac treatment for Fiji. "It therefore provides a platform for future research for better and economical cardiac treatment for Fijians," he said in a statement. Mr Namotu said with more people in Fiji diagnosed with cardiac diseases, the study revealed cost of cardiac
Participants at the zumba display at TappooCity's walkway in Suva Hundreds of people were attracted to TappooCity walkway last weekend with the loud energetic music and people in fitness attire dancing to the beat. The one-hour long display was initiated by Tappoo City to help promote its zumba fitness program. "We have zumba workouts every Friday at level six of TappooCity and this display was basically to just let the people of Suva know about it," said Tappoo Group events co-ordinator Kaushik Ram. "Since Suva is being promoted as a healthy city, we wanted to let people know that Tappoo Group is doing what it can to help promote healthy living." Mr Ram said the response from the crowd was excellent with people coming in numbers to enquire about their weekly fitness schedule. "We had people from the market; shopping centres, in buses and those walking along the streets come and witness our display. It was very encouraging. "Zumba is for everyone, age is no barrier. It is a good way to get fit while enjoying and jiving to good music."
current state. The report stated that the Fijian government had stopped Fiji TV from covering members of the opposition. The order was not to broadcast comments or pictures of people including Qarase, Chaudhry and Felix Anthony. However Sayed-Khaiyum in a statement said he met with the chairman of Fiji TV Limited Isoa Koloumaira on May 25, this year. As far as news reporting was concerned, Fiji TV, like all other media organisations, needed to adhere to the Media Code of Ethics and Practice and be balanced and fair, not just in form but in substance, reiterated SayedKhaiyum.

Fiji garment workers earn and live below the poverty line, say Fiji Trade Union Congress national secretary Felix Anthony. Anthony said this is nothing that Fiji ought to be proud of. His comment comes after the announcement by the president of the Fiji Textile, Clothing and Footwear Council, Kalpesh Solanki last month that the garment industry is poised for a $100 million boom. Anthony said this is definitely derived from the blood and sweat of the garment industry workers where 70 per cent are women who are forced to work on low and demeaning wages. Their current rate of wages per Wages Council Order is a measly $1.65 per hour for learners and $1.96 for others
The 2012 UNDP Survey for Vanua Levu shows that over 48 per cent of population there is living below the poverty line. Anthony said it has been determined time and again that one of the basic reasons for poverty in this country is due to the low level of wages paid to the employees. This is reflected starkly by the wages paid to the workers in the garment industry. Solanki said in his speech at the Fiji/ China bilateral technical assistance workshop last month that the Garment Wages Council was the very first wages council to agree to the increase in the minimum wages in April this year. He said through consensus it was agreed to increase minimum wages by nine per cent. This recommendation is before the Ministry of Labour at the moment.

A 22-year-old man who had raped his seven-year-old neighbour in February last year was sentenced to ten years in jail by the Lautoka High Court. Justice Priyantha Nawana upheld the unanimous guilty verdict that was delivered by the assessors. In sentencing Justice Nawana said the accused breached the trust reposed on him by the father of the victim. Rape is a very serious crime. The nature of the crime is such that a victim is subjected to physical harm and psychological trauma at the behest of an offender for his ephemeral lust. Justice Nawana called on parents to prevent exposure of their children to this sort of vulnerable situations. The parents must be faulted and deserve to be admonished for exposing the child to a grave crime such as this. It is the duty of the parents and the guardians to prevent the children from exposing to this kind of vulnerable situations. Evidence, on the contrary, showed that

This is the third big-budget film to be shot in the country this year following a previous Bollywood film Supermodel and a British Film Bula Quo based on the famous band, Status Quo. Our tourism industry is expected to benefit largely from such films which would showcase our beautiful locations to a large number of viewers across the world. Film Fiji acting chief executive Florence Swamy has already confirmed more films would be shot in Fiji this year. This influx in film shootings is largely attributed to the tax rebates introduced by Government.
Concerns and questions were raised in relation to people bringing suitcases of money and putting it on top of the gaming table at the Fiji Casino. This was raised by some accountants at the 40th Fiji Institute of Accountants Congress at Denarau over the weekend. In response, Permanent Secretary of Tourism, Elizabeth Powell said there
will be a fair mechanism in place in the country, on the dollars that will be coming in and also going out of Fiji. She said Reserve Bank of Fiji and Government are currently looking into the matter. The multi-million dollar casino is expected to open in October next year.

The supply of yaqona from Taveuni has not been a problem over the past year, says farmer and buyer Vijay Singh. Mr Singh who has been a farmer for more than three decades said the supply had been constant and in some cases supply had exceeded demand. "The past year has been the best because I did not experience any shortage," he said. "I buy and supply yaqona from Taveuni to markets in Viti Levu and there is a huge demand out there, especially in the Western Division. "My major market is Sigatoka and I have not run short of supply as farmers flood the market with yaqona every week."
Mr Singh said farmers in the south and north ends of the island were his customers. It costs a lot to travel to villages as far as Vuna and Lavena but I go there to buy yaqona. "The new trend now is that a lot of farmers come to my home to sell their yaqona and this happens when they are in need of fast cash. "It shows how readily available cash is in our very own farms and when farmers need it, they just go sell their produce to the market." Mr Singh said the competition on the island had gotten better than when he first started in the 1990s. "Now, the price of yaqona is as high as $25 a kilogram of waka," he said.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama participated at the opening of the Zhejiang Investment and Trade Symposium in Ningbo. Following the opening, Prime Minister Bainimarama toured international booths at the symposium and was assured by the Governor of Zhejiang Province that a Fiji Booth would be included in next years symposium. The Head of Government then visited the county of Shaoxing in the Zhejiang province. He was hosted by the vice Mayor of Shaoxing Municipality, Mr Xu Minguang. At the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed that approvals had been given from Shaoxing to Tengy Cement to commence construction of the cement factory in Fiji and to further invest in iron ore extraction. Meanwhile, a dalo factory in Shaoxing has been given the green light to explore ways to purchase dalo from Fiji and look at ways to produce dalo products with the intent of setting up a factory in Fiji soon. Arrangements are underway to export dalo to Shaoxing immediately. There is a huge market for dalo in China and the Prime Minister is
particularly interested in providing a market for dalo to our farmers in both the rural or remote areas. Shaoxing also has the largest textile production in China with a total production capital of RMB89billion in 2012 and foreign trade earnings of USD33billion dollars. Talks are now underway to pursue similar operations in Fiji. Prime Minister Bainimarama thanked the Shaoxing Local Government for their support to Fiji and said that Fiji would be most willing to accept genuine investors from Shaoxing. He also invited food processing and fruit companies to come to Fiji to take advantage of available farming land. He concluded his meeting with the Vice Mayor by thanking the Government of China for being a staunch and genuine ally of Fiji when most of its friends deserted Fiji since 2006. In addition he stated that "China has been very supportive of our reforms and the Fijian Government is very appreciative of this; it is because of this support that we have been able to progress steadily over the years".

His Excellency the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has urged parents to educate their children about the deadly epidemic of HIV/AIDS and the various issues related to it, as HIV education begins from home. Ratu Epeli, who is visiting Sigatoka as part of his nation-wide anti- HIV AIDS campaign, told students and teachers of Sigatoka Methodist College that HIV/ AIDS is very much a fact in all our lives today. He said students must be taught about these issues now in school so that they make responsible decisions in their own lives and inform others about this disease at the same time. Parents should by now have realized after 40 years that HIV/AIDS is not going to go away by just ignoring it and by avoiding talking about it. HIV/AIDS can only go away by our combined response in educating first the family and next the public at large about this deadly epidemic, for which there is no known cure, Ratu Epeli said. The President said that the public at large is being educated about HIV/ AIDS but it is the parents responsibility to play their part. Parents must reject stigma and discrimination. They must communicate openly about the risks and they must change behaviour norms. We already know what works and what does not work about the response to HIV/AIDS and no parent will ever accept the sad fact that with AIDS there is a possibility, a sad one at
that, that their children could go before they do. Their children are part of the 1529 and the 30-39 age groups. These two groups are considered the youth who are the most sexually active and they make the bulk of the working population and the most vulnerable. Parents should talk to their children about family values, about being caring and about being careful, about abstinence and practicing safe sex, Ratu Epeli added. He stressed that teachers are there to assist in the teaching process but HIV education must begin with the parents. Ensuring safer sex reduces the spread of HIV. We need to get more people, particularly the youth, to adopt safer sexual behaviours. The catch word is to get it on before you get it on, he said. He also called on everybody to work together in ensuring there are zero new HIV infections, zero HIV discrimination and zero HIV/AIDS related death. Ratu Epeli re-emphasized the need for Government, the business community, faith based organisations and all Fijians to work together in raising the much needed awareness across all levels of our society. With international campaigns against the deadly disease gaining momentum, the support of the nation was critical in minimizing the risks associated with the spread of the disease. "You, parents have a more important role to play as the awareness needed to start from home," Ratu Epeli added.
Participants of the Diplomatic Induction Training with PS PSC Parmesh Chand, PSC chairman Josefa Serulagilagi and Fiji's Ambassador to Japan, HE Isikeli Mataitoga
Civil servants planning to take up diplomatic positions need to understand Fijis foreign policy settings and the agendas, which have matured and organically developed since 2006. Public Service Commission chairman, Josefa Serulagilagi was speaking at the Diplomatic Induction Training for civil servants looking at a career in Fijis growing network of diplomatic presence, a course designed and conducted by Fijis Ambassador to Japan, His Excellency Mr Isikeli Mataitoga. He said the level of independence shown by Fijis foreign policy agenda and practice will need to be maintained with bilateral and regional relations to be on a new footing, as the new power balancing needed to be taken into account. Mr Serulagilagi also said that human resource development cannot be separated from economic progress and there were several advances in
technology that many die-hard civil servants were still grappling with. He said there was still a preference for the long laborious tasks of pushing pens and punching files, rather than pressing touch-go buttons that reduces work durations immensely. There is no denying that it is very important for all Government agencies to bring into full play the role of skills development and training, in improving the quality and capacity of workers, Mr Serulagilagi said. This is vital because we expect ownership and commitment, to carry the agenda through, despite the many challenges we have faced and those that await us in the future. The week-long programme will see diplomats from countries such as India, the United States of America and Papua New Guinea speaking to the participants.

Amputee Awarded
A 32-year-old Labasa sports instructor who lost both his legs in a road accident in 2007 has been awarded a compensation of $667,722 by the High Court in Labasa. Zahid Afwaz Ali won the case against the Patterson Brothers Shipping Company Limited, Prasad Holding Limited, and the two bus drivers who were involved in the incident. Presiding judge Justice Pradeep Hettiarachchi in delivering judgment said the plaintiff is entitled to damages for pain and suffering. In assessing damages for pain and suffering, court takes into account not only the suffering which the plaintiff had suffered immediately after the accident, but also the future suffering that he will have throughout his life. At the time of the accident the plaintiff was 27 years of age, was a young and dynamic person and had a very cheerful life. However, his promising future was ruined by the accident and no amount of compensation can bring back the normal life that he had before the accident. Unquestionably, he would have also experienced excruciating pain and discomfort when he was being trained to wear artificial limbs in a hospital in India. The defense challenged the suit with the explanation that no receipt was produced by the plaintiff in court. The court heard that the plaintiff explained that the ticket that was on him was lost after the bulldozer pulled him free from the wreckage. Justice Hettiarachchi concluded that although the plaintiff had failed to produce any receipt to justify transportation cost to Labasa hospital. It is common knowledge that no one is issued with receipts when he or she hire a taxi in Fiji. Therefore, the plaintiff cannot be expected to have receipts issued by the taxis. Patterson Brothers Shipping Company Limited, Prasad Holdings Limited and Sabir Hussein, a bus driver, were jointly ordered by the court to pay $667,722 to the victim. The court had heard that Ali had accompanied his students to a sports competition in Suva. They took a return trip via the Nabouwalu route by the Spirit of Harmony when the bus that Hussein, the bus driver, tried to overtake the bus on which Mr Ali was travelling on. At Tabia, they collided resulting in the rear end of the bus breaking apart and hitting a Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) post. Ali was sitting in the middle of the bus and his legs were struck between the metal of the bus and the FEA post. His legs were finally freed, by a bull dozer half an hour later but both his legs were crushed and his right leg was hanging above the knee. Ali then was taken to the Labasa Hospital where his legs were amputated and later on personal loan then went to India for artificial limbs surgery and fitted prosthetic surgery. In assessing damages for pain and suffering, Justice Hettiarachchi said the court took into account the immediate and long term suffering Ali went through and future economic loss and further medical treatment.

3 Ghana Students Plead Guilty To Fiji And Kazakhstan Tie To Boost Fraud Charges Tourism
Three Ghana nationals have pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal use of personal information from credit cards from November 30 last year to January 8 this year Marvin Opoku Agyemang, Boakye Vincent Kwame, and Isaac Velison entered their guilty plea before Magistrate Yohan Liyange in the Magistrates Court in Suva and admitted using credit card information of at least six different people. Agyemang, Kwame and Vellison were represented by Legal Aid lawyer Senikavika Jiuta. Attorney for the State Taina Leweni read out the summaries of facts for the trio. The court heard that the three first arrived in Fiji as part of a group from the World Harvest Social Club in Accra, Ghana in November last year. With their student visas they entered the country and supposedly came to do internship in Eco -Tourism in Fiji. Before arriving in Fiji they also travelled through Kenya, India, Singapore and Papua New Guinea. According to prosecution while in Fiji, the three stayed at various hotels. Seamus Chang an employee of Vodafone Fiji Limited, noticed some irregular activities on the Vodafone online shop of recharges of $100 and reported the matter to the Westpac Bank to verify whether the transactions were authorized. Upon investigations made by Westpac employee Jasmeen Bhan, verified that the transactions were not authorized by the legal owners of the credit cards. The trio was arrested after a related incident was reported at the Samabula branch of Court Fiji Limited, where they had used fake American passports for purchases. The court heard that upon a search of the house where they stayed revealed credit card information of six peopleone from United States of America, one from Australia and the four of unknown origins, which the three are, said to have used dishonestly. While pleading guilty, the three asked Magistrate Liyanage for time to make their mitigation submission. Magistrate Liyanage also ordered that Boakes medical certificate be presented in court when the case is recalled as Boake claimed that he was suffering from cancer and did not hesitate to take his t-shirt off and show the swelling on his chest. He stated that he did not get medical attention although this was approved by court. The case resumes on June 22. Fiji is looking to boost diplomatic relations with Kazakhstan, which include a visa arrangement between the two countries. The Republic of Kazakhstans NonResident Ambassador to Fiji, Beibut Atamkulov, met Foreign Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola in Suva last week to discuss avenues that would boost diplomatic relations between the two countries. Kazakhstan, one of the 15 independent states seceded from the USSR in its dissolution in 1991, is keen to look at opportunities for co-operation within the Asia Pacific region. "First, we need to ease Kazakhstan and Fiji nationals access to either country. By that, the two countries will be looking at a reciprocal visa arrangement. "In this way, Kazakhstan and Fiji nationals will be free to visit each other without any worries about visa requirements," Ratu Inoke said. Mr Atamkulov said he was appreciative of the visit to Fiji because it was an opportunity for him to learn about the country and witness its beauty. "I am most happy to be here and to witness the beauty of nature in Fiji," Mr Atamkulov said. He stated a group of Kazakh businessmen would be invited to come to Fiji to look at possible business prospects, especially in the tourism sector. Mr Atamkulov is also keen to study Fijis aviation sector after discovering Fijis national airline now offers three weekly flights to Hong Kong. "For the 500,000 Kazakh tourists that leave their country for warmer places during winter, the news about these weekly flights is indeed promising," Mr Atamkulov said. Kazakhstan recently played an important role in regards to both trade and world markets because of its oil and natural gas reserves. Within the next decade, Kazakshstan is projected to become one of the worlds largest oil producers and exporters.

More than 500 children are involved in the worst form of child labour in Fiji. According to recent reports from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) some of the worst forms of child labour in the country include commercial sexual exploitation of children, drug trafficking, begging and hazardous work where children under the age of 15 are involved. Speaking during the World Day Against Child Labour celebrations in Suva, the Director for ILO South Pacific Countries, David Lamotte said the main contributing factors to child labour in Fiji were poverty, family breakdown, education, unemployment, internal migration and crisis situation. "Programs to withdraw and prevent children from the worst forms of child labour have found that many children are out of the education system, having dropped out of school from a few months to at least five years ago," Mr Lamotte said. He said the lack of social support services and relevant education programs for child labourers and school dropouts posed a challenge to effectively removing children from the worst forms of child labour. Fiji's Ministry of Labour, Child Labour Unit manager Atish Kumar said a child in Fiji could start work from the age of 15 but should not be exposed to hazardous working environment. "A child in Fiji can qualify to work in any environment once he or she is 18 and above and provided he or she is getting paid in accordance to the minimum wage rate." With the minimum wage rate in Fiji being $2.75 an hour, Mr Kumar, however, said children's main priority should be education. "Children are the future of our society. We are currently withdrawing them from work and admitting them in schools because through education they will be able to get better jobs," he said. Issuing a stern warning to those who employ under aged children, Mr Kumar says the ministry is working on some cases to prosecute employers who are employing under aged children and those who do not pay them a minimum wage. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Labour Deputy Secretary Samuela Namosimalua said an individual can be fined $10,000 and more than $50,000 for a corporate business if found employing under aged children. Mr Namosimalua also assured that as part of the Millennium Development Goal, Fiji is trying to reach the target to eliminate any worst form of child labour by 2016.

ONLINE scammers are becoming more creative and local banks have warned customers to be careful. "Customers need to be alert but not alarmed by these scammers. They should keep a close watch on their accounts and report any suspicious transactions immediately to their financial institution," Association of Banks in Fiji (ABIF) general secretary Rasiklal Jogia said. Online fraud or scams refer to any type of fraud that users email, web sites, chat rooms or message boards to present fraudulent propositions to prospective victims mainly to solicit money from their accounts, the ABIF said. Banking fraud, it added, could also involve card skimming, where information from the magnetic strip
of a credit or ATM card is copied. Once scammers have skimmed a card, they can create another card with the stolen information and run up charges on a customers account. This is also a way identities are stolen where the scammers can take out loans using this information. According to the ABIF, fraudsters are also calling people pretending to be bank officers and asking questions about customers' personal details. There is also a growing trend of mule recruiters those who advertise fake jobs. Last year, at the Anti Money Laundering workshop, the Fiji Police Force estimated that collectively locals lost about $1million in a visa scam after responding to an advertisement by a man who offered permanent residency in Australia and asked for bank card details. Annually, the country is estimated to have at least $100million in black money within our financial system. While at least $33m is on tax evasion, the rest are proceeds of crime, cyber
Heavy downpour in Fiji's Western Division has caused flash flooding in some parts of Nadi and Lautoka. The current situation is due to an active trough of low pressure just to the west of Fiji which is gradually moving eastwards towards the group. According to the latest bulletin issued by the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, a heavy rain warning remains in force for Viti Levu, Kadavu, Southern Lau, Yasawa, Mamanuca Group and Lomaiviti. The Commissioner Western's office is advising people to take extreme caution and contact the relevant authorities if they feel they are insecure. Operations officer Jiuta Waqavonovono said they have toured areas in Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka and rain has eased. However, the water level in the Nadi and Sigatoka rivers are rising and people living in low lying areas are being advised to move to high grounds.
"We are monitoring the situation closely and have our people on the ground. There was flash flooding in some areas but nothing major has been reported," said Waqavonovono. "We are closely working with the District Officers and Police and so far no decision has been taken on opening evacuation centres but we will be making an announcement after monitoring the situation." "My only advice to people is not to panic but be very cautious and contact the authorities if they need any help." '"As it stands, the rain has eased but we cannot predict the weather and things can change anytime and we are anticipating the water levels to rise in the main rivers after high tide which is around midnight." Meanwhile, according to some reports, some roads in Lautoka have been closed to traffic, however the Fiji Road Authority is yet to confirm this and is expected to issue a statement later.
The Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade, Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum, will be officiating the inaugural clapper-board shoot for yet another film from India. It is believed the film will be directed by the famous Ra One director, Anubhav Sinha and be shot in Fiji. It will be produced under Silver Nitrate Productions and is said to have renowned stars in the film. This film follows earlier big-named films being shot in Fiji this year which includes the UK film Bula Quo on the famous rock band, Status Quo, along with Bollywood films Supermodel and 3G
Shooting for the film 3G, which stars Neil Nitin Mukesh and Sonal Chauhan, is still being carried out in Fiji and is on a 40-day schedule. Film Fiji acting chief executive, Florence Swamy, confirmed there are more productions lined up for this year. The number of films being shot in Fiji nowadays can obviously be attributed to the attractive tax rebate scheme introduced by the Bainimarama Government. These films, through showcasing our beautiful and exotic locations, would be able to significantly impact our booming tourism industry in a positive way.

A short trip to Fiji convinced Australian couple John Beresford and Danielle Doherty that Fiji was where they would celebrate their lifetime commitment to each other. And they decided the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa would be the ideal location to celebrate the occasion with close family and friends. New bride Danielle only had kind words of her experience at the Natadola Resort and of her time spent with her family as she prepared to marry her true love. "We were in Fiji a year ago for a short holiday and when we were here, we decided it was the perfect place to have our wedding," said Danielle. "We loved the Fijian people and the amazing location and climate. "Fiji is a very child-friendly place and we knew all our guests with or without children could relax and enjoy and have a great holiday while they were here with us celebrating our wedding." While women have always been the decision-makers when it comes to their weddings, Mrs Beresford said
InterContinental provided the perfect backdrop for her special day. "Although we hadn't been to the InterContinental prior to our wedding, we chose to have the wedding there for a number of reasons," she said. "Firstly, our experience and first impressions of the staff members were that they were always very professional and Ema Rayasi, the wedding coordinator, was amazing and we knew we wouldn't have to worry about a thing." She said their guests comprising 60 adults and 13 children also enjoyed their time. And to cap off a memorable stay for the couple, Mrs Beresford said they were already looking forward to their next trip to Fiji. "We had a fun, stress-free wedding with all of our family and friends in a gorgeous location with the wonderful Fijian people. "We really did have the best night of our lives and all of our guests loved Fiji, I think everyone is looking forward to getting back very soon."

The man dubbed the "accidental millionaire'' has pleaded guilty to seven charges of stealing from a bank before he fled overseas. Hui "Leo'' Gao pleaded guilty to seven charges of theft totaling almost $6.8 million when he appeared at the Auckland District Court. The charges relate to offending between April 24 and May 5, 2009 in Rotorua and Auckland. Gao originally faced 16 charges. The reasons for the change are suppressed. He has been remanded on electronic bail until his sentencing in Rotorua in August. Judge Roy Wade said bail did not mean Gao would necessarily avoid prison. According to the police, Gao applied to Westpac for a $100,000 overdraft in 2009 for his struggling BP petrol station in Rotorua. The overdraft was approved. But the bank accidentally transferred a $10m overdraft in to his account. A day later Gao discovered the mistake.
According to his flatmate, Gao said: "f***ing rich ... I've got $1m''. According to police, over the next few days $6.782m was transferred to overseas accounts before Gao fled the country. His partner and the mother of his child, Kara Hurring, followed days later. The couple's disappearance sparked an international manhunt involving Interpol and other overseas agencies. Gao was arrested in Hong Kong last September and was returned to New Zealand just before Christmas. He did not oppose being extradited and was remanded in custody. Hurring, 33, was arrested when she reentered New Zealand earlier last year. Following a trial at the Rotorua District Court last month, she was found guilty of 25 counts of theft, three counts of attempting to dishonestly use documents and two counts of money laundering. She will be sentenced in August.
British Prime Minister David Cameron mistakenly left his eight-year-old daughter behind following a lunch with family and friends at a country pub. Cameron got home from a Sunday lunch and discovered he had left his daughter in the pub. He dashed back and found little Nancy with staff at the Plough Inn in Cadsden, Bucks, as reported. "The PM and wife Samantha were distraught when they realized Nancy wasn't with them," the report quoted officials at Downing Street as saying. "Thankfully when they phoned the pub, she was there safe and well. The PM went down straight away to get her." Nancy got left in the pub loo when Cameron drove off after his lunch. She wandered off to the Ladies as the
Prime Minister and Samantha were arranging lifts and they only realized she was missing once they were back home. The Camerons and children Nancy, Arthur, six, and 22-month-old Florence had been having Sunday lunch with two other families at the Plough Inn near the PM's country home Chequers, the report said. Afterwards, Cameron went home in a car flanked by bodyguards, thinking Nancy was with Sam and their other children in a second vehicle. Sam thought Nancy had jumped in with her father. Cameron drove the two miles back to the 16th-century pub and found Nancy happily helping out the staff. She was away from her family for about 15 minutes.

A 24-year-old Indian-origin man, who strangled his wife and then slit her throat at least eight times, was jailed for at least six years in Australia for manslaughter. Chamanjot Singh had slit his wife's throat with a box cutter at least eight times and then strangled her after their marriage deteriorated in 2009, according to a report. However, the jury at the Supreme Court in New South Wales accepted that the accused was provoked by his wife after he testified she had told him she had never loved him and loved another man. Peter McClellan last month, Singh was found not guilty of murder but guilty of the manslaughter of Manpreet Kaur, on December 29, 2009 in Sydney west. It was also noted that Singh lost control after his wife's brother in India made offensive remarks about his mother in a phone call. The judge Peter McClellan said Singh had been an immature
young man, far from his family in India, and did not have the personal resources to deal with the deteriorating marriage. He set a maximum term of eight years and noted it was inevitable Singh would be deported after serving his sentence. Outside the court, the victim's sister, Jaspreet Kaur, lashed out the sentencing and said it was very bad law in Australia. She denied that her sister had any affair and said her brother-in-law had lied when he told the jury about an affair. They believed it (but) they did not have any proof, they didn't show anything in the court, they don't know who the guy is," she said adding her sister's mobile phone was checked for calls involving her alleged lover, but police found nothing. Several times I told her, just leave this man, he is not for you, she said no he is my husband, I will definitely survive with him, she said. She was really the best sister in this whole world.

Prince Charles seems to have won a lot of hearts in becoming people's choice to succeed Queen Elizabeth II, who is now 86. Charles' popularity has surged following his role in the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. His prominence during the holiday festivities has seen the public's affection for him rocket, a poll has revealed. In a marked shift in mood, the poll reveals that the country now thinks Charles, 63, is the best person to take over the throne, should the Queen abdicate or die -- reversing previous findings that the Crown should go straight to Prince William, as reported. People were moved by Charles' emotive speech at the end of the Buckingham Palace concert in which he lovingly referred to the Queen as "Mummy". They were also influenced with the way he was resolutely at his mother's
side during that evening's events and the following day's commemorative service in the absence of his ill father. Only a fortnight ago 44 percent people had said they would prefer William to be the next king, compared to 38 percent who favoured Charles. But the latest YouGov poll sees the figures exactly reversed -- with Charles drawing 44 percent of the votes to William's 38. The results will be a boon to the Prince of Wales, who along with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall has seen his image improve significantly in recent years. This is, however, for the first time that a poll has favoured Charles to succeed the Queen since 2005. Public opinion towards both Charles and Camilla has seemingly warmed in recent times with the latter successfully winning over many of those who attacked her following Princess Diana's death in a road accident.
Authorities were considering charges after a man allegedly became disruptive aboard a US Airways flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles, an FBI spokesman said. The 29-year-old man was believed to have been intoxicated and was refused alcohol aboard Flight 705, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said. The man, whose name wasn't released, got out of his seat at one point, according to Eimiller, and was eventually restrained. There's no indication the incident was terrorism-related and there were no reports of any injuries. Susan Roberts, a passenger aboard the plane, said the man rushed toward the cockpit door carrying a lighter and was intercepted by a female flight
attendant. She added the attendant was aided by several passengers and the man was handcuffed for the remainder of the flight. "He was yelling something like, 'I have to get up there,"' Roberts said. "It was completely horrifying." Roberts' boyfriend, Jeffrey Smith, said he saw the flight attendant stop the man in front of the cockpit and began pushing him toward the back of the plane. Smith said he and several passengers helped get the man in his seat within five minutes. "He was resisting the entire time," Smith said. "He was belligerent and yelling. The flight attendant showed great grace under pressure and truly knew what she was doing."
Only those British nationals or residents with an annual income of at least Rs 16 lakhs will be able to bring spouses from the Indian sub-continent and other countries outside the European Union from July 9, the government announced. The new restrictions are part of the David Cameron government's efforts to reduce migration from outside the EU. The curbs on non-EU spouses are also intended to clamp down on bogus marriages and family visas, with migrants ending up on benefits from the taxpayer. Home secretary Theresa May said: "Like the rest of the immigration system, family visas have not been regulated properly for years." "There have been sham marriages, people have been allowed to come to Britain without being able to speak English and there haven't been rules in place to stop people becoming a burden on the welfare state," she said. "We're changing all of that. Our plans mean the thousands of people who wish to bring their foreign spouses, partners and dependants to live with them here in Britain will have to have sufficient financial independence to be able to support them without becoming a burden to the taxpayer," she added. On the controversial issue of foreign criminals being prevented from deportation on human rights grounds, May said she would be seeking the backing of Parliament for new guidelines for the courts spelling out how they should apply the European Convention on Human Rights in such cases. Besides the income threshold, other curbs include a longer period, from two
to five years, before the non-EU spouse can be granted permanent settlement. Sponsor of a non-EU spouse, will have to earn at least 18,600 pounds (nearly Rs 16 lakhs) a year and if they have a child the threshold will rise to 22,400 pounds, rising by 2,400 pounds for each additional child. "I think it is important that if people are bringing people into the UK to create a family here in the UK that we say that you should be able to support yourselves and not be reliant on the state," May said. Any British citizen or an individual with resident status will also have to sign a five-year undertaking that they can "maintain, accommodate and care" for their elderly non-EU relatives without access to public funds such as carer and disability allowances, housing and council tax benefits and winter fuel and cold weather payments. The new restrictions have already drawn criticism from human rights groups and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI), who see the curbs as an attack on the right of migrants to family life. Shami Chakrabarti, director of the human rights group Liberty, said: "Given the toxic nature of immigration politics in a recession, it becomes especially important to distinguish between abuse and criminality and anything that splits up genuine innocent families of British nationals." "Any income based assessment of this kind automatically discriminates against women, retired people, disabled people, the young and many minority ethnic people," JCWI said. "It is well known that pension levels and wages for these people are proven to be lower than average in the UK," it added

Sydney Claims The Title Of Australia's Most Expensive City For Expats
Sydney has claimed the title of Australia's most expensive city. SIX of the world's 30 most pricey cities for expats are in Australia, a survey has found. Sydney has claimed the title of Australia's most expensive city for expatriates, narrowly missing the top 10 globally but coming in 11th in the latest Mercer cost-of-living survey. The home of the Opera House was followed closely by Melbourne at 15th most expensive and Perth sneaking in the top 20 at 19th. All rose from their ranking the previous year, with Perth climbing 11 spots from number 30. Mercer principal Nathalie ConstantinMetral said Australian cities had experienced some of the biggest jumps as the Aussie dollar strengthened against its US counterpart. "Demand for rental properties has also increased significantly in all the Australian cities we rank,'' she said in a statement. "Coupled with very limited availability, the result has been very tight markets and increased prices.'' The survey took place in March when the Australian dollar hovered above parity with the greenback. It compared the cost of more than 200 items including transport, food and housing across 214 cities globally, using New York as its basis. Canberra came in as the fourth most expensive of the six Australian cities surveyed, jumping 11 places from 23 the previous year, while Brisbane rose seven spots to take 24th place. But it was Australia's city of churches, Adelaide that increased its relative costliness the most, rising 19 places from 46 to 27th spot. Two New Zealand cities also shot up the list this year, after that country's currency also strengthened against the US dollar. Auckland and Wellington both jumped 62 places to come in as 56th and 74th most expensive cities, respectively. Tokyo claimed the title of world's most expensive city for expatriates, while unstable economic situations across Europe caused most European countries to fall in comparison with the previous year.
A woman was forced to drop her trousers in the middle of a packed rush hour subway train in the US when a rat ran up her trouser leg. Ana Vargas, 40, was sitting in the train as it approached New York's Columbus Circle station when the rodent suddenly crawled up her leg. Varagas, a hotel supervisor, said she initially thought it was her trousers moving until she realized it was something crawling inside.
Despite violently shaking her trousers, the large rodent still didn't drop out. "I said, 'Oh, my God - it's an animal on my leg'". "I was shaking, but nothing was coming out . . . I had to pull my pants down in front of everyone on the train," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying. Thankfully, Vargas' blushes were saved when three men tried to shield her from other people in the carriage.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney thinks Canada's new failed-refugee program deserves a chance as it could save taxpayers money in the long run. The government's controversial immigration and refugee bill will now make its way to the Senate despite opposition outrage. Bill C-31, the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, cleared the House of Commons Monday by a 159132 vote after the Conservatives used their majority to pass the bill. The Tories say the bill follows up on an election commitment to bring in "legislative tools to combat human smuggling criminals who want to treat Canada like a doormat." "We hope that this bill will become law before the summer break as it passes to the Senate," Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said. "This bill will also further strengthen our reforms of Canada's asylum system to make sure that it's fast and fair, and will allow for us to improve immigration security screening significantly through legislative authority for biometric visa collection. So it's very important legislation." The legislation will allow the government to detain "irregular applicants" unable to provide identification upon arrival. Once the identity of a claimant is established and a refugee claim is approved, they will be released. Under the terms of the bill, most refugee claimants will have their cases processed within around seven months, though claimants from designated "safe" countries will get a decision faster - within six weeks. The Tories recently agreed to allow judicial reviews of detentions at 14 days and six months, instead of at 12-months as they originally proposed. NDP immigration critic Jinny Sims said the government's bill erodes the foundation of Canada's immigration and refugee system, and breaks domestic and international laws. The B.C. MP takes issue with a number of components in the bill, including the terms surrounding mandatory detentions. "I think it is one of the key pillars in this legislation that is so draconian," she said. "This is really about punishing the most vulnerable citizens when they arrive here, putting their lives at risk and when they get here we're going to throw them in prison."
As CBC continues to cut jobs and cancel programs in the wake of budget cuts announced in March, the head honcho of the organization is defending big bonuses to senior ranks. CBC president Hubert Lacroix was questioned recently about bonuses for top executives, which in recent years have totaled between $775,000 and just under $1 million for the 10 to 12 most senior people. Lacroix scoffed at the question. "Your numbers are way off," Lacroix said after speech to the Economic Club last week in Toronto. "We have a short-term incentive plan that pays out - and it's a short-term incentive plan - that pays out according to the meeting of targets... "We have no intention of affecting
the short-term incentive plan that is available to the six of 700 managers that we have." Yet documents released under access to information paint a different picture. In the fiscal year ending March 2010, the last year for which figures are available, the top 10 executives split a bonus kitty of $778,799, the year before it was $888,699 and for the fiscal year ending March 2008 the top 12 executives split a bonus package of $964,860. CBC refuses to say how much each executive received but did reveal that the top bonus for fiscal 2008-09 was $165,090 or 3.5 times the average income of a full-time Canadian worker. That bonus was also paid out at a time when CBC was having to layoff hundreds of workers to deal with the global recession.
Alleged victim a 55-year-old woman from Japan attending school in Canada A Calgary woman has been charged with defrauding an immigrant to Canada out of more than $2 million in property and cash. Police allege Melissa Holman, 40, duped the victim last summer into believing it was unsafe for her to have local assets while staying in Canada on a student visa. The alleged victim is said to be a 55-year-old woman from Japan who was attending school in Calgary. The victim was persuaded to turn over the deeds to two properties one in Signal Hill and one in Springbank and provide the culprit with access to her bank account, police said.
The woman had been living in one of her two properties while attending school. Since the arrest of Holman, deeds to the two properties have been returned and $90,000 has been recovered. Police say $320,000 taken out in bank drafts has not been found. At the time of the offences Holman was president of the Temporary Foreign Workers Association of Canada (TFWA). Police began investigating the matter last September and say Holman was not previously known to them. Holman was arrested last week and faces charges of fraud and theft. Her next court appearance is set for Aug. 21.

Ruling Clears Way For ICBC Workers To Strike, But Drivers Won't Be Affected
The union representing ICBC workers says it will serve strike notice in a matter of weeks. COPE 378 vice president Jeff Gillies says a Labour Relations Board interim ruling has cleared the way for 72-hour strike notice starting July 1. Gillies says drivers won't be affected. "We want to take a wise and cautious approach to job action. As we have said to ICBC repeatedly, our interest is to take some escalating job action to put some pressure on them to come back to the table and negotiate." Gillies says they could stand down if the corporation returns to the table to talk monetary issues. The workers have been without a contract for two years. ICBC is also calling the interim labour ruling a win. Spokesperson Mark Jan Vrem says the board ruled the union can't threaten essential services with a strike. "We are gratified to note that the Labour Relations Board agreed without application, and they have indeed deemed those essential services, so if the union does take any sort of job action, customers will still continue to be well served." Jan Vrem says the union has to tell ICBC what job action they will take and serve notice well in advance. He says the company hopes negotiations will conclude before the board issues a final ruling.
Premier Christy Clark announced that the redevelopment of St. Paul's Hospital is moving ahead with finalizing the concept plan. "St. Paul's Hospital delivers worldclass care to families in Vancouver and from across British Columbia," said Premier Clark. "Finalizing the concept plan is a critical milestone that will lay a strong foundation for a redeveloped hospital that ensures patients and families continue to receive that worldclass health care for years to come." The Ministry of Health and Providence Health Care will immediately begin work to finalize the redevelopment concept plan, noting the detailed planning will need to account for the complexities of maintaining necessary care for patients on the current site when the project gets underway. It is expected the final concept plan and a more detailed business plan will be complete by 2014. The redevelopment timeframe will be determined through the business plan process. "Patients and health-care professionals can have confidence that our government is addressing the renewal of St. Paul's Hospital," said Health Minister Michael de Jong. "Across British Columbia, we are building better patient care for future generations." It is anticipated the redevelopment will include construction of a new outpatient care tower on the northwest corner of the current St. Paul's Hospital site as well as essential site infrastructure upgrades
and selected renovations such as seismic upgrades to existing buildings. By consolidating and expanding outpatient programs and services, and upgrading existing facilities, the renewal of St. Paul's Hospital will provide more accessible, efficient care, allowing for improvements in health outcomes, while keeping pace with growing demands. "Its welcome news that the government is committed to redeveloping St. Paul's Hospital," said Providence Health Care CEO and President Dianne Doyle. "We look forward to working with the government around the next steps." Since 2001, the Government of British Columbia and its funding partners have invested more than $80 million in renovating and upgrading St. Paul's Hospital. This includes $17.2 million to replace aging electrical infrastructure and elevators; $14.7 million for emergency department renovations; $9 million on cardiac services, ambulatory redesign, ambulatory care clinic; $4.6 million for site consolidation and hemodialysis machines; and, $2.1 million for redesign of the surgical procedure rooms and outpatient department. More than $7 billion has been invested over the last 10 years in health capital projects in B.C. In the next three years, B.C.'s health care system will benefit from investments, such as a redeveloped St. Paul's Hospital, as part of a $2.3-billion health sector capital plan.
Canada is one of the most peaceful countries in the world, according to the annual Global Peace Index (GPI). The country jumped three spots from last year, now occupying the 4th place position. According to the study, only Iceland, Denmark, and New Zealand are more peaceful. The GPI uses a number of indicators when determining a countrys peacefulness. These include, but are not limited to: access to weapons, organized conflict, violent demonstrations, political instability,
and conflicts fought. For the majority of indicators, Canada ranked a 1, the lowest and most peaceful ranking possible. Overall, according to the GPI, the world became slightly more peaceful over the last year. All regions with the exception of the Middle East and North Africa experienced improvements in their levels of peacefulness. Canadas rise in ranking was attributed largely to a scaling down of military efforts abroad, while maintaining an aboveaverage level of peacefulness at home.

Marriage Fraud
Dont Become A Victim Of Marriage Fraud
If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and you meet someone from another country on the Internet or while travelling, you should take care if you are considering marrying them and sponsoring them to Canada. Sponsors must financially support their spouse for three years, even if the marriage or relationship fails. If your spouse uses social assistance, you will have to repay the money, and you wont be able to sponsor anyone else until the debt is repaid. Sponsorship is a legally binding financial commitment with the Government of Canada. Sponsors: Do not be tempted by offers of money or other rewards to enter into a marriage of convenience just so the person can immigrate to Canada. If you do this, you can face serious criminal charges, and you will still have to meet the terms of the sponsorship. Do not feel you are obligated to help somebody by being part of a marriage of convenience, no matter what the reason. It is not worth the risks. Visa applicants: Dont get involved in a marriage of convenience. You will be refused a visa and may be banned from travel to Canada for two years. This will remain permanently on your CIC record. CIC recognizes that even genuine marriages can fail. However, if you enter into a marriage of convenience and come to Canada as an immigrant, enforcement action can be taken against you. This enforcement action could end with your being deported by the Canada Border Services Agency.

I'm sure in childhood you heard it said many times that the most important meal of the day is breakfast. It's a very true statement. A lot of people tend to skip breakfast and it's not a good idea. Even though you may lead a busy life and may be in a rush in the mornings it's vital to leave enough time for a healthy breakfast. Maybe that's why so many people are cranky in the morning. They haven't eaten a good breakfast so their blood sugar has dropped leaving them hungry and irritable. There again there's also a lot of people who eat breakfast but eat the wrong type of stuff, sugary food or donuts. This isn't a good idea. A sugary breakfast isn't healthy. It may give you a sugar rush and a much needed boost of energy but it's not enough to set you up for the day ahead. Maybe too, this is why people have a habit of drinking a lot of coffee. They need the jolt of energy from the caffeine to wake them up and get them going for the day. Do you ever feel sleepy or sluggish during the day? Or find it hard to get

Your Money
Saving - no matter how much or how little you save - is a fantastic way to feel confident and in control of your finances. Not to mention that it helps you to achieve your future goals. So make a decision to start today! Step 4 - Set up a separate account Alright, now that you know how much you need to save and how much you can save, set up a separate bank account to put your savings into. That way the money won't get mixed into your everyday transaction accounts and "accidentally" spent! Next - have you heard the expression: "out of sight, out of mind"? Ask your employer to direct debit your allocated savings amount straight into your purpose-built bank account every payday. That way the savings money is never in your spending account and eventually you'll even forget that it's happening. Step 5 - Know your finances While you will most likely start off your savings in a cash account, there are also other investment options available. What investment is right for you will depend in part on how long the money will be invested for (your investment timeframe) and how personally comfortable you are with certain forms of investment (your risk profile). For investments other than cash (such as shares and property) you should seek professional advice.
Save for set goals Step 1 - Get a plan The first step is to decide what it is that you want to save for. Whether it's something specific such as a holiday or a car, or a more general goal such as having a cash buffer for "just in case", knowing what it is that you want will give you the motivation to start putting money aside. Grab a piece of paper and a pen and write a list of your goals under the headings "Short Term" (1 - 3 years), "Medium Term" (4 - 10 years) and "Long Term" (10 years plus). Then priorities which goals are the most important to you. You might want the lot, but you've got to priorities! Step 2 - Allocate a cost Allocate a cost to your important goals. When you divide that cost by the number of months between now and when you want to achieve the goal, it will give you a rough estimate of how much you need to save each month to
make it happen. For example, a $5,000 holiday in two years time would be a savings goal of around $200 per month between now and then. A $15,000 house deposit in five years time would be a savings goal of $250 a month. Once you know how much you ideally want to save you can look at some strategies to make it happen. Step 3 - Do a budget For most of us, saving money will mean cutting costs so that it can happen. The most effective way to cut your costs is to do a written budget so that you can work out what exactly it is that you do spend your money on. There are plenty of easy ways to cut your expenses, such as repaying personal debt, taking homemade lunch to work, cutting your bank fees, cooking instead of getting takeaway, shopping with cash instead of credit. Even spending a few hours reviewing your telephone, electricity, car insurance and home and contents insurance contracts could net you some significant savings.

ICBC'S Tips For Sharing The Road With Motorcyclists In The Lower Mainland
As the weather gets warmer, more motorcyclists will be hitting the road, so ICBC is asking all drivers to use extra caution and courtesy in sharing the road. On average, each year in the Lower Mainland there are 1,300 crashes involving a motorcycle or moped resulting in 800 injuries and 14 deaths.* Motorcyclists are eight times more likely to be killed and over 40 per cent more likely to be injured in a crash than other road users.** ICBC wants everyone to get where theyre going safely, so here are their tips to help drivers and motorcyclists share our roads: Tips for drivers: No. 1 Be on the lookout: Motorcyclists are hard to see, especially at night or dusk and in heavy traffic. At intersections, scan and look carefully for motorcycles, particularly when turning left. Its difficult to judge their distance and how fast they are travelling so if you see one, the safest thing to do is yield the right of way. No. 2 Watch the rider for clues: Sometimes a motorcycles turn signals are hard to see. If the rider shoulder checks or the motorcycle leans, the rider is probably planning to change lanes, adjust lane position or turn. Also, motorcyclists often ride in the left part of the lane to be more visible to drivers dont assume theyre planning to turn left. No. 3 Communicate: Acknowledge riders whenever possible whether with a wave or eye contact to let them know that youve seen them. Get in the habit of reading a motorcycles language. No. 4 Follow safely: Leave at least three seconds of following distance theyll respect your right of way. Remember, they may not see you and even if they do, they may not accurately judge your distance or speed. When in doubt, its better to yield the right of way. When overtaking vehicles in traffic, be sure to watch for signal lights, front wheel movements or drivers who are shoulder checking or checking their mirrors. Do your best to stay out of drivers blind spots. No. 5 Stay alert and use extra caution: One of the most common types of intersection crashes occurs when oncoming vehicles turn left in front of motorcyclists. When you see oncoming traffic signaling to turn left, reduce your speed and adjust your lane position to avoid a potential collision. If youre signaling left from a highway, signal well in advance of your turn, check your mirrors and make sure you have plenty of space behind. Drivers may not be prepared to slow down for you. Many motorcycle crashes occur on road curves and often involve the rider going off the road or crossing the centre line into oncoming traffic. To avoid this, plan your trajectory prior to reaching the curve and adjust your lane position and speed appropriately. Always look where you want to go. For more road safety tips, visit icbc. com/road-safety. *Statistics are based on 2007 to 2011 ICBC and 2007 2010 police data. Injured victim counts include anyone injured in the crash not only motorcyclists. Fatal motorcyclist counts include only motorcycle drivers or passengers. ** Statement is based on ICBC injury data from 20062010 and policereported fatality data from 20052009.
when youre behind a motorcycle since they have a much shorter stopping distance than other vehicles. When passing, allow plenty of space because your vehicle could splash dirt or water in the riders face and pose a serious hazard to the rider. Remember that a motorcycle needs the whole lane to travel safely never try to occupy the space in the lane beside a motorcycle. Tips for motorcyclists: No.1 Start at the top: As of June 1, 2012, all motorcyclists must wear a helmet that meets DOT, Snell M2005 or M2010, or ECE safety standards. Make sure it displays the proper label and meets safety-helmet labeling requirements. A full-face helmet provides the best protection in a crash, as well as protection from rain, wind, dust, insects and debris. The new law also states that motorcycle riders and passengers must have their feet on the foot pegs or floorboards, or be properly seated in a sidecar. And dont forget youre responsible to ensure passengers younger than 16 are properly seated. Anyone who cant reach the foot pegs is not allowed to
ride. If youll be riding when its dark, take steps to be more visible to drivers by adding reflective material to your gear or wear a reflective vest over your jacket. No. 2 Do a pre-trip check: Before riding, always check your tire pressure, wheels and rims, drive system, electrical (lights, turn signals and horn), fluids, clutch, throttle, mirrors and brakes. It doesnt take long and will become routine and automatic the more you do it. No. 3 Improve your traction: Slippery and wet roads, gravel or debris, railway tracks, lane markers, puddles and potholes are some of the common things that can affect a motorcycles traction. To improve traction, always keep your tires properly maintained and inflated. Scan the road ahead for potential hazards and avoid riding in the centre of the lane where oil and water can gather or on painted road markers. No. 4 Communicate with drivers: Read vehicle language never rely on other road users judgment or assume

Physical abuse involves physical harm or injury to the child. It may be the result of a deliberate attempt to hurt the child but not always. It can also result from severe discipline, such as using a belt on a child or physical punishment that is inappropriate to the childs age or physical condition. Many physically abusive parents and caregivers insist that their actions are simply forms of disciplineways to make children learn to behave. But there is a big difference between using physical punishment to discipline and physical abuse. The point of disciplining children is to teach them right from wrong, not to make them live in fear.
In physical abuse, unlike physical forms of discipline the following elements are present: 1. Unpredictability. The child never knows what is going to set the parent off. There are no clear boundaries or rules. The child is constantly walking on eggshells, never sure what behavior will trigger a physical assault. 2. Lashing out in anger. Physically abusive parents act out of anger and the desire to assert control, not the motivation to lovingly teach the child. The angrier the parent the more intense the abuse. 3. Using fear to control behavior. Parents who are physically abusive may believe that their children need to fear them in order to behave, so they use physical abuse to keep their child in line. However, what children are really learning is how to avoid being hit, not how to behave or grow as individuals.

Promotion at the workplace, which is generally accepted as good news for one's wallet, is beneficial for health as well, a new study has revealed.
Those working in departments with high promotion rates were 20 percent less likely to develop heart disease as compared to those with little chance of improving their situation. Researchers studied the employment histories of 4,700 Whitehall civil servants and found those in departments with double the rate of promotion had around a 20 percent lower chance of being diagnosed with heart disease over the 15-year period of the study, from 1985 to 1999. The researchers, Sir Michael Marmot from the University College London and Michael Anderson from the University of California, Berkeley, took the existing prevalence of heart disease and the grade at which employees joined the civil service into account. This meant it was not simply the case that researchers found heart disease was less common in people who were originally healthier and from more privileged backgrounds. Previous research had found that Oscar winners outlive runners-up, Nobel Prize winners outlive nominees and baseball players who reach the Hall of Fame live longer than those who fall short. Sir Michael said the survey showed that 'favourable shocks can positively impact health'. 'There is little question that, for individuals, achieving higher socioeconomic position is good for health,' as reported. 'Promotion is one mechanism of upward social mobility. Upward social mobility is good for health,' he added.

Simple eye test may help save lives by identifying patients who are at high risk for stroke, say researchers at the University of Zurich.
They showed that a test called ocular pulse amplitude (OPA) could reliably detect carotid artery stenosis (CAS), a condition that clogs or blocks the arteries that feed the front part of the brain. It's a known risk factor for stroke. The OPA test could be performed by ophthalmologists ' physicians who treat eye diseases ' during routine exams. The study confirmed that patients who had the lowest OPA scores also had the most seriously blocked arteries. People with severe CAS are much more likely to suffer stroke. Physicians would like to catch and treat CAS before that can happen, but because CAS has no symptoms and an efficient test is not currently available, the disease often goes undetected. The Swiss research team used a device called the dynamic contour tonometer to check the OPA of 67 patients who were assumed to have CAS. The OPA score is calculated by finding the difference between the two pressure levels that occur inside the eye during the two phases of the heartbeat - the systolic and diastolic. The tonometer measures the two pressure levels, then instantly computes the patient's OPA score. When blood flow to the eye is blocked by CAS, there is not much difference between the two pressure levels, so the OPA score is low. The study confirmed that patients with the lowest OPA scores also had the most seriously blocked arteries. The researchers used ultrasound exams to corroborate that each study participant had CAS and to detail the severity of his or her blockage. 'Our results show that ocular pulse amplitude is a reliable, safe screening test for carotid artery stenosis. We recommend further study to confirm the value of using OPA to detect and assess the severity of CAS and to define its use in stroke prevention,' said lead researcher Pascal Bruno Knecht, M.D. A research review performed for the U.S Preventive Services Task Force indicated that if an efficient screening test for CAS were available, the incidence of stroke and fatalities due to stroke could be substantially reduced. The review stated that the test should be able to detect clinically significant CAS, defined as 60 percent to 99 percent blockage of the carotid arteries. Some high-tech tests, such as magnetic resonance angiography and color duplex ultrasound, already meet this standard, but they are expensive and not widely available. Their primary use is in diagnosing patients who already have symptoms of stroke. It could be efficient to perform the OPA test during a standard eye exam, if the ophthalmologist is already using the dynamic contour tonometer to screen for glaucoma. This type of tonometer is not widely used in the United States, although it is in Europe. The researchers say that other than CAS, very few diseases could cause low OPA scores, and that an ophthalmologist could easily rule out these other diseases during an eye exam.

Making sure you do not eat too many calories is important in any healthy diet, but it is especially important for diabetics. Controlling your portion sizes is key to controlling calories: Divide your plate into 3 parts: , , . Fill half of your plate with non-starchy veggies (greens, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peppers, carrots, turnips, etc.). Split the other half of your plate into two equal parts, filling one with protein and the other with a starchy carbohydrate (rice, potatoes, pasta, whole-grain bread). Aim for a protein serving of around 3 oz., which is about the size of a deck of cards for meat. Animal protein is more calorie dense, so it is important to really pay attention to how much you are eating. Keep servings of starchy carbs to cup. One serving of starchy carbohydrate is cup cooked rice or pasta, which is about the size of half of a baseball. Start your meals with veggies, which will help fill you up and give you lots of nutrients. Save half of restaurant meals for later. When out at a restaurant, ask the server to put half the meal on your plate and pack the other half to go. Read labels on foods, so you can understand how many servings and portions are in items.
If your last diet attempt wasn't a success, or life events have caused you to gain weight, dont be discouraged. The key is to find a plan that works with your bodys individual needs so that you can avoid common diet pitfalls and instead make lasting lifestyle changes that can help you find long-term, weight loss success. Choose fats wisely Fats can be either helpful or harmful in your diet. People with diabetes are at higher risk for heart disease, so it is even more important to be smart about fats. Some fats are unhealthy and others have some health benefits. But all fats are high in calories, so you should always watch your portion sizes. Unhealthy fats The two most damaging fats are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats are found mainly in animal products
such as red meat, whole milk dairy products, and eggs. Trans fats, also called partially hydrogenated oils, are created by adding hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more solid and less likely to spoilwhich is very good for food manufacturers, and very bad for you. Healthy fats The best fats are unsaturated fats, which come from plant sources and are liquid at room temperature. Primary sources include olive oil, canola oil, nuts, and avocados. Also focus on omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation and support brain and heart health. Good sources include salmon, tuna, and flaxseeds. Ways to reduce unhealthy fats and add healthy fats: Instead of snacking on cheese, chips or crackers, enjoy a handful of nuts or seeds. Go for variety with sunflower, pumpkin seeds, almonds, cashews, pecans and walnuts. Instead of cooking with butter or vegetable oil, use olive oil. Trim any visible fat off of meat before cooking and remove the skin before cooking chicken and turkey. Instead of frying, choose to grill, broil, bake or stir-fry. Serve fish for 2 or 3 meals each week instead of red meat. Add avocado to your sandwiches instead of cheese. This will keep the creamy texture, but improve the health factor. When baking, use canola oil or apple sauce instead of shortening or butter. Find other ways to make soups creamy instead of using heavy cream. Try blending cooked potatoes in a soup, or adding a little cornstarch (mix with cold water then add to the soup). Then add a little swirl of good olive oil on top. Make your kitchen diabetes friendly What you keep in your kitchen can either help or hurt your diabetes diet efforts. There are some foods that you should keep around and readily available and other foods that are best kept out of sight and out of your cupboards. A 3-step plan for making your kitchen diabetes friendly:
Step 1: Out of sight, out of mind. Get rid of all the unhealthy, nutrient-scarce foods in your pantry, refrigerator, and cupboards. This includes cookies, pastries, candies, sugary cereals, highfat lunch and deli meats, fried foods, chips, cream-based foods, full-fat dairy products, juice, and sodas. When they arent readily available, you will eat less of them. Step 2: Organize your food storage spaces. Stock your kitchen so you can see what you have available to eat and cook with. Keep everything visible and easy to access, so you can better plan your meals and grab healthy snacks quickly. Step 3: Stock up on healthy, appetizing foods. Fruit Keep a large fruit bowl filled and in sight on a table or counter. Fruits are high in fiber and vitamins, plus they are colorful and pretty to look at. You can also keep frozen berries for smoothies or to add to yogurt. They also help curb your sweet tooth. Vegetables Cut up vegetables, such as bell peppers, tomatoes, jicama, celery, and carrots, and keep them in plastic bags or containers for easy snack choices. They also taste great with hummus, a dip that has some protein and good fats in it. Also stock your freezer with your favorite veggies. This way you always have easy access to veggies to add to meals. Nuts and seeds Keep a variety of nuts and seeds on hand. They stay nice and fresh when kept in the freezer or refrigerator. Add them to your morning cereal or have a little handful for a filling snack. Nut butters are also very satisfying and full of healthy fats. Grains It is best to keep only slow release carbohydrates around. This means: grains such as brown rice, quinoa, millet, and pearled barley. Also stock up on whole grain, highfiber cereals, breads, and pastas in your kitchen. You can line your shelves with glass jars filled with different varieties of grains. Jicama: The perfect diabetes snack Jicama, a type of tuber, is rich in slow-release carbohydrates. Jicama has a wonderful fresh, slightly sweet taste and crunch. Cut into pieces they can be dipped in hummus, guacamole, or salsa, or they can be marinated in
lemon or lime and topped with spices (i.e. chili powder) or in orange juice and lemon juice. Tips for sticking with a diabetesfriendly diet plan First and foremost, take small, manageable steps. Choose two or three things you want to work on. Once you feel you have mastered those you can move on to two or three more steps towards a healthier diet. Here are some tips for making the transition easier and supporting yourself so you stick with these changes. Pamper your senses. Taste isnt the only sensory pleasure. Look to the other sensestouch, sound, smell, sightfor indulgence. Fill your house with plants and flowers, get a massage, take a long shower, listen to your favorite music, play with a pet, sit in the garden, or light scented candles. When you feel pampered and indulged, you are less likely to turn to food for comfort. Eat with others. Make meals a social experience. Increase the pleasure of the meal through the company and the whole experience, not just from the amount you eat. Be mindful about who you share your meals with and find those friend who encourage and support you in what you are aiming to do. If you have friends who are not a good influence around food, then you can choose to do other activities with them that dont involve eating. Get enough rest. If youre tired, your body will crave sugar and other quick energy fixes. This can easily lead to overeating, rising and falling blood sugar levels, and mood swings. Get to bed on time and try taking a short nap if you are overly exhausted. Get to the root of your reasons for eating. Ask yourself, am I hungry for food or am I feeling hunger for something else, such as comfort? If the latter, try getting comfort through other means. Ask for a hug from a loved one, curl up with a cup of hot tea and a great book or your favorite movie, light some candles and take a bubble bath, or call a friend who makes you laugh. There are many ways to satisfy your need for comfort that dont involve food. You just need to find what works for you.

Waheeda Rehman
and professionally, although they continued to work together into the 1960s Chaudhvin Ka Chand. She completed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) under some strain. They broke away from each other after the film's indifferent reception at the Berlin Film Festival in 1963. Soon afterward, Guru Dutt died on October 10, 1964 in Mumbai reportedly from an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol. Waheeda Rehman established a great working relationship with Dev Anand and together as a pair had number of successful films to their credit. The box office hits of the pair include C.I.D. (1956), Solva Saal (1958), Kala Bazar (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962) and Guide (1965) and box office duds were Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja(1961) and Prem Pujari (1970). She reached in her peak with Guide (1965) and was much in demand. Rehman was cast as "Gulabi" in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Abhijan in 1962. She was offered lead actress's role in films even opposite actors junior to her by experience like Dharmendra but they flopped. But she continued to taste success in the late sixties when she was paired with well established stars. She delivered hits opposite Dilip Kumar like Ram Aur Shyam, Aadmi and some box office duds with Rajendra Kumar and this helped her continue to get lead roles in early seventies. Her career's biggest hit Khamoshi came in 1970, opposite Rajesh Khanna. Her career continued throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her roles in Guide (1965), where she hit the peak of her career and Neel Kamal (1968), but despite excellent offbeat roles in subsequent films, including a National Award winning performance in Reshma Aur Shera (1971), some of the films failed at the box office. Seeing her films being successful, Waheeda decided to experiment with roles, at this stage of career. She accepted Reshma Aur Shera, opposite her old co-star Sunil Dutt, with whom she had previously in sixties had hits like Ek Phool Char Kaante, Mujhe Jeene Do, Meri Bhabhi and Darpan. Her performance was appreciated by critics but the film failed at the box office. But Waheeda continued to experiment with roles and accepted the offer to play a mother to Jaya Bhaduri in Phagun(1973). This she regards the mistake of her career as after this film flopped, suddenly people started offering her motherly roles to heroes. From the mid seventies, Waheeda's career as lead heroine ended and her career as character actor began. At around this time, Kamaljit who starred opposite her in Shagun (1964) proposed and then got married in 1974. After her appearance in Lamhe (1991) she retired from the film industry for 12 years. In her new innings from seventies her successful films, where she played pivotal roles include, Kabhi Kabhie (1976),Trishul (1978), Jwalamukhi(1980), Namkeen and Namak Halaal (1982),Mashaal (1984), Chandni(1989), Rang De Basanti(2006). In recent years she made a comeback playing elderly mother and grandmother roles in Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Water (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006) and Delhi 6 (2009) which were all critically acclaimed. In October 2004, a Waheeda Rehman film retrospective was held at the Seattle Art Museum and the University of Washington where Waheeda participated in spirited panel and audience discussions on her most memorable filmsPyaasa, Teesri Kasam and Guidealthough her most successful film is still considered to be Khamoshi, with costar Rajesh Khanna. Personal life After her marriage with Shashi Rekhi (screen name Kamaljeet) on April 27, 1974, she shifted to a farmhouse in Bangalore. She has two children named Sohail and Kashvi, who are both writers. On November 21, 2000, her husband died following a prolonged illness. She moved back to her ocean view bungalow in Bandra, Mumbai where she currently lives. Waheeda Rehman (May 14, 1936), is an Indian film actress who appears in Bollywood movies and is known for many successful and critically acclaimed movies from 1950's, 60's and early 70's most notably C.I.D. (1956) and Guru Dutt classics such as Pyaasa (1957), 12 O'Clock (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Her other notable works include Solva Saal (1958), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Kohra (1964), Guide (1965), Teesri Kasam (1966), Aadmi and Khamoshi (1969). Early life One of the most prominent actresses of the golden era, Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Urdu-speaking Muslim family in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India. She and her sister learnt Bharatnatyam at Mumbai's Sri Rajarajeswari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, where Guru T. K. Mahalingam Pillai, taught and performed on stage together. Her father, who was a District Commissioner, died while she was still in her teens. It is a common misconception that Rehman was born in Hyderabad. Its a long story, she says, When I was in Chennai, I did three to four Tamil and Telugu movies. In the first one, Kaalam Maari Pochu along with Gemini Ganesan a bilingual film which was made in Tamil and Telugu as Rojulu Maraayi, I did only a folk dance number in both Tamil and Telugu versions. However, it went on to become a hit! I was in Hyderabad celebrating its success and Guru Dutt happened to be there. He was on a lookout for new faces and heard that I could speak in Urdu. It is because he spotted me in Hyderabad that people
assume I was born there. Her dream was to become a doctor but, due to circumstances and illness, she abandoned this goal. Instead helped by her supportive parents, she hit the silver screen with Telugu films Jayasimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Marayi (1955) and Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956). It is in Vijaya-Suresh combines Ram aur Shyam (Remake of Telugu movie Ramudu Bheemudu) in 1967 that Waheeda acted again under the direction of the topnotch Telugu director Tapi Chanakya who incidentally directed her movies Rojulu Maaraayi in Telugu (1955) and Kaalam Maaripochu in Tamil (1956). Career Waheeda Rehman, started her career in films in 1954 and her first successful films were the Telugu films Jayasimha (1955), followed by Rojulu Marayi (1955) and Tamil film Kaalam Maari Pochu (1956). In the success party of Rojulu Maaraayi, Guru Dutt noticed her and decided to groom her and make her act in Hindi Films. Waheeda considered Guru Dutt as her mentor. Waheeda Rehman was discovered by Guru Dutt, after seeing her acting in Rojulu Maaraayi and was brought to Mumbai and cast as a vamp in his production C.I.D. (1956), directed by Raj Khosla. A few years after joining the Hindi film industry, she lost her mother. After the success of C.I.D., Dutt gave her a leading role in Pyaasa (1957). Their next venture together, Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), depicted the story of a successful director's decline after he falls for his leading lady. Dutt's existing marriage and her film successes with other directors caused them to drift apart personally

After tickling the audiences with his wit and humour for years, now our very own Khiladi Akshay Kumar is back with raw action in his latest release Rowdy Rathore. Directed by the dance guru Prabhi Deva, Rowdy Rathore is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster Vikramarkudu. Rowdy Rathore is a full-blown masala entertainer that will surely impress you with Akki's desi punches, colourful songs and lots of romance. Story: Rowdy Rathore narrates the story of Rowdy (Akshay Kumar), who is a petty thief and gets the thrill out of duping people. Rowdy falls headover-heels in love with Priya (Sonakshi Sinha), a pretty girl, whom he met at a wedding in which he wasn't invited. The story takes a shocking twist after a six-year-old Neha enters into the picture and claims that Rowdy is her father. Rowdy decides to find out the truth behind the girl's claim that finally unveils the mystery of the story. Performances: Akshay plays a double role in the movie that bestows him with abundant opportunity to flaunt each shade of his skill. Akki is in his best form, with his rowdy romance and comedy. Akshay promises raw action in the film and his one-liner Dont Angry Me is already on everyones lips, which make for a good recall value. Sonakshi plays a lovable, charming, yet impish character very well. Especially, the desi girl image suits her impeccably. The child artist portraying the part of
Akshay's daughter is really cute. Other characters like Paresh Ganatra, Yashpal Sharma, Gurdeep Kohli adds colour to their respective episodes. Music: Pretty Sonakshi Sinha's red sari act on the number 'Chammak Challo Chail Chabeeli', draws a comparison with Kareena Kapoor's 'Chammak Challo' from Ra.One. 'Chinta Ta Ta' is the pick of the lot and the presence of leading actors Vijay and Kareena Kapoor and Prabhu Dheva himself gives it an edge, while 'Dhadang Dhang Dhang' and 'Aa Re Pritam Pyaare' are lively, full-of-zest tracks as well. Talking on a serious note, the story of Rowdy Rathore goes illogical to some extent, but it won't disappoint you at all due to its desi packaging. Akshays moustache and garish look in the film as Rowdy works for the character and his action skills were never doubted by anyone. The film reaches an all time high due to the fun, action And Akki's dialogues. Verdict: Overall, Rowdy Rathore has the potential to set the cash registers ringing, provided it delivers what it promised. Rowdy Rathore is a total paisa wasool film, hence it's a must watch. Sydney, Australia
where the Sydney Opera House stands, gently lapped by the waters of Sydney Cove. While here, if you have time for it later, you can book for one of its operatic productions, or a symphony concert, dance program or play. And there are tours of the site at regular intervals. to rest your feet, take the monorail and stop where you please.
A Darling place
Sydney, founded in 1788 by Captain Arthur Phillip who led the flotilla of convict ships from Britain, is Australia's best known city. Not surprisingly, some believe it to be the nation's capital. Most visitors to Australia have Sydney as their major first destination. They either stay in Sydney, discovering its numerous and of times iconic attractions and the city's nearby areas reached by daytrips. Or they radiate from Sydney into other parts of Australia, to the Great Barrier Reef, for instance, or the Outback.
Sydney sightseeing
Sydney travel and sightseeing go hand in hand and need a bit of planning, especially within the constraints of time. If you're a first-time Sydney travel visitor, finding out exactly where to go in only a day or two and how to find places in an orderly and logical manner can be worrying. If you have limited time to spend but want to see the sights, feel the throb of early history, partake a bit of the cultural life, dine, and check out the nightlife here's one Sydney travel and sightseeing guide:
Begin with history at The Rocks district in Sydney Cove where Captain Phillip started the settlement in 1788 which has since grown into the Sydney that it is today. Here, where buildings exude an air of the past, you find specialist shops, open-air markets, colonial-style restaurants, street entertainment, and access to historical sites. This is a place where you must travel on foot, in and out of the streets and into the many alleyways where different places wait quietly to be discovered. From The Rocks, Sydney sightseeing should then take you to Circular Quay, passing by the Museum of Contemporary Art where you can view celebrations of the Aboriginal spirit and the newer arts of today.
From the Opera House you can then take a leisurely walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens and on to the Domain, where the Art Gallery of New South Wales stands. You should see what the Art Gallery has to offer and view at least one of its many art displays such as the permanent exhibition of Aboriginal art at the Yiribana Gallery. Entry to the Art Gallery, except for certain special or visiting exhibitions, is free. Lunchtime? There is a fine restaurant at the gallery itself or you can cross the road to Pavilion in the Park.
At Darling Harbour there's the Chinese Garden, the Sydney Powerhouse Museum, Australian National Maritime Museum, Sydney Aquarium, Sydney Wildlife World, convention centre, exhibition halls, promenades, pubs, restaurants, shops, ferries, sailing ships.
The Sydney entertainment and gaming complex, The Star, formerly Star City, is nearby if you want to have a go at roulette or blackjack. The Sydney Entertainment Centre is also within spitting distance. At dusk or early evening, you might want to return to Chinatown if you fancy a Chinese meal, or to some other restaurant in the area.
Cross-city walk
And then it's time to cross the central business district, past St Mary's Cathedral, Hyde Park, the Australian Museum, through Chinatown and on to Darling Harbour. If you feel you need
If you had booked an opera seat for the night, you can then proceed to the Opera House by bus or taxi. Failing which, if you have time to spare, you can always whizz through the Cross for an altogether different kind of night.
The Rocks
For many Sydney visitors, Sydney sightseeing must take in the Sydney Opera House, one of the United Nations-inscribed World Heritage sites. And so it's down to Circular Quay, to the railway and bus terminals and the berths of Sydney ferries, through the bustle of crowds and hawkers and buskers, and so up to Bennelong Point

to the back seats, but once situated there, Im comfortable enough, with the top of my head just barely missing the ceiling. Ive always preferred the more hightech look in vehicles, so the interior, with its brushed metal, white stitching, single-tone black, and lack of wood is right up my alley. As with all cars under Hondas umbrella, its worth noting the TSX cockpit is very buttonheavy. I like this setup, but its a stark
contrast to interfaces such as BMWs iDrive or Audis MMI. When all is said and done, Acuras real trump card with the TSX is its price. While still a fine vehicle, it simply doesnt have the same cachet as other offerings, specifically those from Europe. And to truly reach the upper-echelon of luxury sport sedans, Acura needs to offer more of what drivers want. As it stands, the TSX is only partway there.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman presents the Conn Smythe Trophy to Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick after his team defeated the Devils in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, To the surprise of absolutely no one, Jonathan Quick was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as most valuable player in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Really, there wasnt another choice, was there? Oh, Captain Dustin Brown had terrific playoff moments and was a huge part of the Los Angeles Kings' dominant 6-1 win over the New Jersey Devils Monday night, and Drew Doughty has once again confirmed his place as the next great defenceman in hockey. But over four rounds, and 16 wins by the Kings, it was the goaltender Quick who was the constant game-to-game, series-to-series Quick ended the playoffs with a miraculous 1.41 goals against average and a post-season leading .946 goals-against average, making it the second straight year that an American goaltender was awarded the Conn Smythe without any real debate. In the four wins by the Kings in the final, Quick allowed three goals in almost 14 periods of play. In winning the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe, something he can now share with his goaltending coach, Bill Ranford, who won both himself, the soft-spoken and often unemotional Quick talked about the journey that took the Kings from also-rans to Stanley Cup champions. He also talked about winning the first three games of the series, thinking it was over, then losing two straight and clawing their way back to victory Monday night. You keep pushing (the Stanley Cup) out of your mind when youre on the ice. It will creep back in (your head). Especially when you get that four goal lead. You know, its hard for it not to creep into your head a little bit. But I just reminded myself how dangerous they were. And then he celebrated, first by winning the Cup, but before Commissioner Gary Bettman gave that out, he presented Quick with the Conn Smythe. If it wasnt for him, were not in the playoffs, said Willie Mitchell, the veteran Kings defenseman who was in tears on the ice post-game. He was our MVP in the season, our MVP in the playoffs. The right guy won the award.

the veteran defenseman in a pool of blood. Quick took it from there, finishing a starmaking two months by allowing just seven goals in six finals games. "You never know. You get to the dance, you never know what's going to happen," Brown said. "We calmed down after losing two. It was the first time we had done that all playoffs, and we finally got off to a good start." Martin Brodeur stopped 19 shots for the Eastern Conference champion Devils, just the third team to force a Game 6 in the finals after falling into an 0-3 hole. Rookie Adam Henrique ended Quick's shutout bid late in the second period after the Kings had built a 4-0 lead, but Lewis and Matt Greene added late goals for the Kings. The Kings went 16-4 after barely making the playoffs, eliminating the top three seeds in the Western Conference in overwhelming fashion as they matched the second-fastest run to a title in NHL history. Although the Devils gave them a little trouble, the Kings took down every opponent in their path after an inconsistent regular season. Los Angeles boasted a talented, balanced roster that peaked at the absolute perfect time under midseason coaching hire Darryl Sutter. Brown, just the second American-born captain to raise the Cup, accomplished what even Wayne Gretzky couldn't do in eight years in Los Angeles.
Featherweight champ Jose Aldo has been forced to withdraw due to injury from his title defense bout against Erik Koch originally slated for the July 21 event. Top billing will now go to an interim bantamweight title bout between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao. The Faber-Barao tilt was originally slated for UFC 148 on July 7 but was moved to shore up some top names to a Calgary card that has been plagued with injury and lineup changes. Earlier in the week, Thiago Silva was scratched from the co-main event against Mauricio Shogun Rua due to injury. Rua was subsequently removed from the card to headline the UFCs Aug. 4 event in Los Angeles against Brandon Vera. An injury also forced Brit scrapper Michael The Count Bisping from his fight against Tim Boetsch. UFC newcomer and former Bellator and Pride veteran Hector Lombard will replace Bisping. Thiago Alves who was originally set to face Yoshihiro Akiyama until an injury forced the Japanese fighter from the card was himself injured and removed from the Calgary show. His replacement opponent, Siyar Bahadurzada, will now face Chris Clements. Of the originally announced main card for UFC 149, only the Cheick Kongo/ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight
remains. A replacement fight to fill the main card hole left by removing Rua from the Calgary event is expected to be announced soon. Calgarys new main event will feature one of the most recognizable fighters in the UFC in Faber. The California native and former WEC featherweight champ is 3-1 at 135 lbs. He will face the owner of the longest unbeaten streak in mixed martial arts in Barao. The Brazilian Baron has not lost in 27 straight fights and has catapulted his way to the top of the UFCs 135 lbs division. He has notable victories over Cole Escovedo, Brad Pickett and Scott Jorgensen. The entire Calgary card, barring any further changes, now looks like this: MAIN CARD Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao for interim bantamweight belt Yet to be announced fight Cheick Kongo vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Chris Clements Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard UNDER CARD Roland Delorme vs. Bibiano Fernandes Mitch Clarke vs. Anton Kuivanen Court McGee vs. Nick Ring Bryan Caraway vs. Mitch Gagnon Antonio Carvalho vs. George Roop Ryan Jimmo vs. Anthony Perosh James Head vs. Claude Patrick

Us Open: Paul Casey Replaced By Andy Zhang Aged 14
A 14-year-old will replace injured Englishman Paul Casey in this year's US Open which started on Thursday. China-born Florida-based Andy Zhang, who had missed out on qualifying in his own right in a play-off, is the competition's youngest player since the Second World War. Casey, 34, dislocated his shoulder snowboarding on Christmas Eve and is not fully fit to play in San Francisco. "It's affecting my ability to be ready for the test of a major," he said. Zhang, who was second reserve, beats the record of Tadd Fujikawa, who was 15 when he qualified for the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot. "[When I got the call] my mind just went blank," said Zhang. "Then, I said "Wait! What? I am in the US Open?" He is due to play a practice round with Masters Champion Bubba Watson on Tuesday, prompting his caddie Christopher Gold to say: "You can play with whomever you want. Why not Bubba?" Zhang's coach Andrew Park said: "Andy hits it miles and miles. "He's got a very good head on his shoulders. He couldn't speak any English when he got here, and now we can't keep him quiet." He teed-off at 16:21 BST in Thursday's first round alongside Japan's Hiroyuki Fujita, 42, and 37-year-old Mark Wilson of the United States. Casey, who has also been beset by rib and foot injuries in recent seasons, was ruled out for the first two months of the season following his accident in Colorado. When he returned to competition he missed his first four cuts, including the Masters at Augusta in April where he shot rounds of 76 and 75. He finished 25th in Korea later that month but then had to withdraw after nine holes of the Players Championship in Florida and pulled out of the World Match Play in Spain. Rounds of 78 and 76 led to another cut at Wentworth's PGA Championship three weeks ago and Casey, who is down to 58 in the rankings, has not played since. "You're always disappointed to miss time due to injury, but it's especially true when you have to withdraw from the US Open," said Casey, who was once world number three. "I've been trying to play my way back and I feel like I probably came back too soon originally. "I so want to play and it's so frustrating. I've got to get my brain to trust that I can't hurt it any more. It's amazing how the brain controls the body almost involuntarily." American Brandt Snedeker has also withdrawn from this week's second major of the season. The 31-year-old has a rib injury and will be replaced by amateur Jordan Spieth, 18, a member of last year's beaten American Walker Cup side in Aberdeen.
