Good luck J The Greek Crisis and the elections of 2012 5:30pm Tuesday 12th June, Seminar Room A On 17 June 2012, Greece will face its most important general election of the last decades. Elections in this small country have acquired an unexpected world-wide significance that is very rare in comparable situations. As it happens, some analysts predict that the whole future of the European idea depends on the outcome of this vote. The previous, inconclusive polls of May 2012 demonstrated that predictions of increasing political instability which might eventually derail the Greek bail-out process were unfortunately all too correct. Since 2010, Hughes Hall has hosted a series of annual public lectures, reviewing the evolution of the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Demetrius Floudas, revisits the topic, which has been at the top of the agenda of political and economic analysts in previous months. This lecture intends to present an understandable overview of the Greek and Eurozone crisis, for everyone who may have felt overwhelmed by the masses of information disseminated so far. At the same time, it will follow with

deeper analysis of a number of issues, based on analytical prediction models as well as the speaker's own experience from his observations of the political undercurrents in Greece. How likely is it that Greece will default? What will really happen if it does? How will a Greek collapse affect the UK, Europe and the rest of the world? Why did Greek voters reject the European bail-out in May 2012? What are the predictions for the June 2012 Greek polls? Is instability/riots/civil war a possible danger for the country? What are the myths propagated on the European sovereign debt crisis and where can we find explanations closer to the truth? What are the scenarios for the 'day after'? Demetrius Andreas Floudas is a Special Adviser to the 'Forum for Greece' political think tank and a Member of its Board. He has also worked for the past year as Of Counsel to the Greek Government on a project related to the bail-out agreement. He has been interviewed on a number of occasions by the BBC, as well as Greek media, to provide an assessment of the unfolding crisis in the country. Demetrius Floudas is a Senior Associate of Hughes Hall and a Fellow of the Hellenic Institute of International and Foreign Law. *RSVP to events@hughes.cam.ac.uk* May Ball May Ball tickets are still available for sale: please follow the instruction on the linked webpage to book your tickets now! http://www.hughesmayball.co.uk/

Rio+20 Earth Summit: a series of short talks (& a chance to ask Julian Huppert questions!) Where? Riley Auditorium, Clare College When? Friday 15 June, 2.30-4.30pm (after exams, not even during May Week, so there's basically no excuse not to come!) Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/events/346436018763433/ (please click attending if you plan to come) Price: FREE Strange as it may seem, May Week is happening at the same time as the Rio+20 Earth Summit - 'one of the largest and most important gatherings in the history of the UN,' according to Ban Ki-Moon. If you're interested in any of these: - Oceans - Water - Food - Disasters - Cities - Energy - Jobs ... ...then good news - they're the 7 'critical issues' highlighted by the Summit, and Energise Cambridge and the Cambridge Hub are organising a series of short (10-15 min) talks by experts from Cambridge, covering a range of those topics. That'll be followed by a quick talk by Julian Huppert, who will have met Nick Clegg just 2 days before this, about the Rio Summit, and a chance to ask questions. Out of the first Earth Summit in 1992 came the UN conventions on both Climate Change and Biodiversity. That was around the time that many of us now studying in Cambridge were born, and it's odd to think that we're now old enough to engage in the global issues that will shape our futures. After the talks, there'll be time for discussion, and refreshments outside afterwards if the weather's good! Speakers confirmed so far include Prof. Andrew Balmford, head of Conservation Science, talking about food security and sustainable agriculture can be reconciled with the conservation of biodiversity, Dr. David Reiner, who has advised government, industry and NGOs on energy and environmental policy and will be talking about energy and climate change, Dr. Andrew Coburn, who been involved in developing several disaster mitigation plans in a wide range of countries, will be talking about disaster preparedness (again subject to confirmation). Other speakers will be announced nearer the time. NUCLEAR POWER: CLEAR OR UNCLEAR? Sustainability, policy and prospects Tuesday, 26-06-2012 Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge Nuclear power is playing an ever more fundamental role in energy strategies, providing about 15% of the world's electricity. In addition to the on-going debate about the sustainability of nuclear energy, nuclear power has come under the spotlight following last year's accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Plant and Germany's decision to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022. After these events, experts, as well as common people, are eager to discover the truth about the sustainability of nuclear energy from an objective perspective. The goal of the CUEN 2012 annual conference is to deliver this perspective to its audience.

In bringing together professionals, academics and students, this conference aims to inform, inspire, and facilitate interaction and discussion on the sustainability of a future fuelled by *nuclear power*. The conference will be a one-day event on *Tuesday 26 June 2012* and will be divided into sessions: after a brief historical introduction, an overview on current and future technologies in nuclear power generation will take place, followed by two sessions focused on safety & waste and on policy & finance, with a closing discussion on the sustainability of nuclear power.
