FOREWORD This Indian Standard (,Third Revision > was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Doors, Windows and Shutters Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council. This standard was first published in 1957 and subsequently revised in 1966 and 1977. In this thiid revision, the timber species suitable for manufacture of door shutters have been classit!ed based on various properties, such as strength coefficient, appearance and texture, durability and treat, abi]ity, weight, retention, retention of shape, refractoriness to seasoning, ease of working, etc, in orde; of preference. The basis of classification is, thus, more rational as compared to the earlier basis of distinguishing between teak and non-teak broad-leaved species and deodar and non-deodar coni: ferous species. The classification is given in IS 12896 : 1990 Classification of Indian timbers for door and window shutters and frames. Also BWR plywood has now been specified in place of BWP type plywood used earlier. The requirements for slamming test have also been added to this specification. it also includes a table for permissible defects for various grades .of timber. Further, in view of the experience gained in the use of this standard, the sizes of componerts of the shutters have been modified.and use of haunched tenon joints have now been permitted. In recent years, due to restrictions on felling from forests in the country, a number of timber species have been imported for various timber products. Annex B gives a list of such species which have reportedly been used for doors and windows for. general information of the manufacturers and users. This standard covers timber door shutters with panel inserts bf timber plywood, blockboard, veneered particle boara, wire gauge, asbestos ccmcnt sheets and glass. However, since the nature of material and manufacturing details with regard to each type of these panel. inserts are different, the serviceability expected from each type of door would depend upon a particular situation of use. The users are, therefore, expected to,decide which particular type of panel.insert would meet their rqquiremcnts before placing an order. Keeping in view the advantages of modular co-ordination, Indian Standards specify the dimensions of ccmponents in modular units. In line with this, the specified dimensions of shutters are also based on modular opening sizes. However, it has been repeatedly brought to the notice of Doors,, Windows and Shutters Sectional Committee that there was sufficient demand for sizes other than modular sizes 2nd that manufacturers were meeting such demands at present. This had led to a situation where shutters satisfying the other requirements of the standard, but not the requirements regarding the dimensions were considered as not satisfying the requirements of the standard. This situation also ceme in the way of satisfying the consumer needs for other quality requirements by of timber a third party certification system. Therefore, with a view to ,eccouraging production shutters to the quality requirements specified in the standard, the, Committee decided to relax the dimensional requirements by permitting non-modular sizes in addition to the modular sizes specified. However, the relaxation has been made only in the height and width, thickness remaining unchanged. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should! be the same as that of the specified . value in this standard.
