All of Us - #551
Fr. Larry
Thanks, Dad! A clergyman walking down a country lane sees a young farmer struggling to load hay back onto a cart after it had fallen off. "You look tired, my son," said the cleric. "Why don't you rest a moment and I'll give you a hand." "No thanks," said the young man. "My father wouldn't like it." "Don't be silly," the minister said. "Everyone is entitled to a break. Come and have a drink of water. Again the young man protested that his father would be upset. Losing his patience, the clergyman said, "Your father must be a real slave driver. Tell me where I can find him and I'll give him a piece of my mind!" "Well," replied the young farmer, "he's under the load of hay." Congratulations to all dads today as we celebrate Fathers Day. We extend to them our gratitude for all the love and support they give to their families. One of the best things a dad can do for his kids today is to simply show-up for them. Being there for your son or daughter means a lot and can have a huge impact upon their lives. Lots of kids get into serious trouble because they are missing a good role model. Without a father figure to guide them, they quickly get lost in their lives. Dads have the ability to help their kids learn the value of working hard and using the gifts and talents that God gave us. A paycheck is something you earn and is not money blindly entitled to you. Your salary reflects your sweat, hard work and dedication. Dads have the opportunity to let their kids understand the value of patience. Patience especially when you help your son or daughter learn how to ride their bicycle for the first time without training wheels. You wonder how many times you have to run up and down the block with them before they get it and fly by themselves. I know a dad by the name of Joe Shannon. He and his wife, Sally, raised 12 kids. He said to me once, Father,
can you imagine what it is like to have to teach your kids 12 times how to drive a car, and then go with them to get their license? Honestly, its a little nerve racking. I told him, Joe, I am sure your reward will be great in heaven. It sounds like you already paid your dues here on earth. Happy Fathers Day to all our dads. May you be able to sit back and relax. Let your kids spoil you. Take it all in and enjoy those who care about you. On the Mend Please keep my dad, Ed Lisowski, in your prayers. A couple of weeks ago he fell and hurt himself at home. He ended up fracturing one of the bones above his tailbone. This really, really hurts. I guess it is more painful than a broken rib. Currently my dad is at the Mother Theresa Home, right here in Lemont, which is part of the Franciscan Village facilities. Luckily for me, its just three minutes away from the front door of the rectory. I can see him every day. My dad has been slowly improving day by day. He is eating good, sleeping well and the pain in his back has decreased significantly. He has been receiving great care and attention by the staff of the Mother Theresa Home. I thank you, and certainly my dad thanks you, for all your prayers, support and concern. It has been a great help to us. Happy Anniversary! Congratulations to Rev. Francis J. Affelt, O.F. M., who celebrated his 60th anniversary of priesthood ordination on June 14th. Fr. Francis has many family ties to our parish. If you would like to send him a greeting card, he can be reached at: Rev. Francis J. Affelt, O.F.M. Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration 1515 W. Dragon T.R. P.O. Box 766 Mishawaka, Indiana 46546-0766 I am sure he would love to get some good old fashioned snail mail.
On July 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th, St. Alphonsus Parish will host the daily morning Mass in their Church at 7:30 AM to accommodate the parishioners of the St. Patrick, SS. Cyril & Methodius and St. Alphonsus communities. (There will be a 9:00 AM Mass on Wednesday the 4th of July here at St. Cyril's for the holiday.) This is because a number of priests will be gone from the area on retreat and it is the best solution to oblige the people of the three parishes. Please offer a small prayer for the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago and an increase in vocations both religious and lay ministers. The Church depends on those who have decided to devote their time and energy to keeping the mission of Jesus Christ alive and thriving in our society.

Rediscover the art of soup. Take all the misshapen things in the refrigerator and be creative! Buy smaller amounts of the higher quality food you can. You are more likely to use them and less likely to toss them. Shop like a Europeanif you canmake frequent trips to local stores for smaller amount of very fresh food. Store leftovers in single portion containers. You can easily tote them for lunch the next day. When something is reaching its last days, store it in the freezer. Food properly frozen can be defrosted and brought back to life. Use the bulk food section when possible. Then you can buy exactly the amount you need. Buy the highest quality food you can find. The more you pay for it the more likely you are to eat it. At restaurants, ask about portion sizes. Ask for to go containers at the start if the portion sizes are too large. Also at restaurants, be mindful of sides. If you are not going to eat them or take them home, decline them. Try composting food scraps at home or finding an outlet for them.
