CHAPTER 3

I awoke in stages. First I heard a giggle and then I

felt a feather light touch along my cheek. “Careful Gia.”

I heard a male tenor say. “You are supposed to wake him,

not tease him.” Again I heard the giggle and a silvery

voice. “Michael, who is this? I haven’t seen him around.

Is he a new one?” “No Gia, he has always been here.” The

silvery voice whined. “Then why don’t I know more about him

then? I know everyone else.” “As I just told you Gia, he

has always been here. I was told he has rested here since

the beginning, always asleep never awake.” “Why?” “The

master said he needed the sleep until it was time for him

to wake. Now is that time. That is why we were sent here

and you were told.” “I know, I know.” Bubbled the silvered

bell. “I was told that I was the one to wake him up.”

“Yes, you were told to wake him up.” The tenor replied with

an exasperated tone. “But Gia, he’s not completely asleep.

He has been listening since you touched his cheek.” “Oh,

he’s playing asleep. Well, that calls for a tickle

attack.” “Wait Gia! You must be careful, he’s not

completely awake either and I don’t understand the emotions

I sense from him.” Then gently, ever so gently, I felt a

kiss. The kiss was as light as a cloud and the taste was

indescribable. I gasped. For the first time since the

accident, I felt my body. Incredible pain and longing shot

along my nerves as my chest expanded and my heart started

racing. In surprise, my eyes flashed open and I sat up

holding my chest in agony. I stared in disbelief at the

seven beings surrounding me on a dais where I laid. As the

pain pulsed through my limbs, I quickly assessed each face

of the group. The faces were perfect in stature and

bearing. However, they all seemed to have an expression of

surprise and concern. I felt a burning across my chest and

down my extremities. I looked down at the glowing symbols

pulsing across my bare arms, hands, chest, and then

disappeared beneath the white linen sheet now gathered at

my waist. As I stared at the symbols the glowing

dissipated and my skin returned to its usual ruddy hue. I

quickly stared at the group. They all seemed to be frozen

in place. With the glowing dissipated, I could now start

to distinguish individual features to the seven. They all

seemed cut from the same mold with very slight deviations.

They all had the same flowing flaxen hair, the same

porcelain complexion, and the same perfect bearing except

for the seventh. She was different from the rest. Because

she was closer than the rest, I could see a faint dusting

of freckles across the bridge of her nose and a tinge of

red coloring to her hair. I stared completely and deeply

at her. My eyes locked with her aqua gaze. Something was

familiar about her. Something I had forgotten long ago. I

stared harder and deeper into her gaze. The others slowly

faded from my notice. What was it that I had forgotten? I

knew it was very important. My whole life had depended on

the memory now gone. As this being stood there transfixed,

staring back at me like a deer caught in the headlights, I

stared even more intently. It was right on the edge of my

understanding. All I had to do was grasp it and rattle it

free from the void. She then dropped her eyes, blushed and

chirped. “Hi.” In that instant, some of my memories came

flooding back. All the love, longing, pain, and sorrow

came pouring into and pulsated through my body. As I

raised my hand, I noticed the symbols glowed and pulsated

even brighter. I cried out. “Kassie! How, why?” Out of

the corner of my eye I caught a movement. Instinctively

and instantly I was standing twenty feet from the dais in

the only compass point left free of visitors. Miraculously

the linen sheet still clung around my waist. They all

looked in stunned surprise first at the dais and then at

me. They then all froze in shock. The seventh being then

shook her head. “I’m sorry I don’t know who or what is a

Kassie.” Then before waiting for a reply she turned to the

others and asked them. “Do any of you know who or what is
a Kassie?” As she faced each one, each in turn gave a

slight shake of their heads. “I’m sorry, none of us seem

to know who or what is a Kassie.” She turned and took a

step toward me. I instinctively took a step back

maintaining our distance. “Gia! I told you to be careful.

Right now he is scared and confused. I told you he has

been asleep since the beginning. He doesn’t understand

what is happening and may accidentally do something without

meaning to. The master told me he is stronger that all of

us combined, but also more fragile that the least of us.”

“But Michael, I’m not the one who startled him so that he

is way over there now instead of over here talking.”

“Well, he didn’t start glowing until you kissed him.”

“Michael, waking him up was my job. The master was quite

specific about how, although, the glowing startled me as

much as it did you. After I kissed him I was suppose to

hold his hand until he was fully awake, but forgot when he

started glowing. Now he’s over there afraid of us,

confused, glowing and I can’t get close enough to hold his

hand like I was suppose to.” Gia then turned back to me

and gave a little wave. “Hello again, I’m really sorry,

but no one here seems to know who or what is a Kassie.”

“You’re not Kassie? You look and act a lot like Kassie!”

Gia pouted. “No, I’m not Kassie. I’m Gia.” She then
turned to her companions pointing and naming each in turn.

“He’s Michael, then Raphael, Gabriel, Azrael, Simon, and

finally Lillian. Now what’s your name?” Her question

caught me completely by surprise. “I…I don’t know. I

can’t seem to remember. All I remember is Kassie and pain.

Such pain, excruciating pain.” “Pain? I don’t understand.

It shouldn’t hurt to sleep. Could you come back over here?

It would be easier to talk if you were over here.” “No, I

don’t know how I got here and why am I glowing?” “I know.

I was suppose to hold your hand until you finished waking

up and then Michael accidentally startled you and you ended

up way over there. I don’t know why you’re glowing.

That’s why I forgot to hold your hand. I didn’t expect you

to start glowing when I kissed you. But if you won’t come

over here would it be all right if I came over there

instead?” “Gia, careful.” “Michael, silly, I can’t hold

his hand from here and it would be easier to talk if we

were closer instead of yelling.” She then turned back to

me. “Well is it all right for me to come over there then?”

I was taken aback. She had no fear. I could sense no

guile or deceit, just curiosity about me. I really

couldn’t think of a reason to deny her request. “Gia is

it? I think you may come over here, but only you. I’m

still not so sure of your friends just yet. You look

familiar even if you’re not who I thought you were at

first. But, I don’t recognize any of them.” “All right,

here I come.” She quickly glided over to me. I jumped as

she grabbed my hand and whispered to me. “Oh tingly, isn’t

this nicer than yelling across the room? Now look at that,

you must be feeling better. The glowing isn’t as bright.

Why don’t you come with me and meet the others? They would

like to meet you as well. There is no need to be so

bashful.” “Gia, I am not bashful or I don’t think I am. I

think I am wary, only you have said anything to me. The

others all stare at me like some kind of insect beneath

their notice.” “Well of course silly, they are waiting for

me to tell them it is all right. It was my job to wake you

up and introduce everyone. You startled me when you

started glowing, so I haven’t gotten to introduce everyone

officially yet. Now you told me you couldn’t remember your

name. I can’t very well just call you, hey you, so I think

I’ll call you Solus. Is that all right?” I shrugged.

“That seems fine, since I can’t seem to remember another

Solus will do for now.” “Well come on then Solus.” Gia

chirped while gently tugging on my hand. “Let’s go meet

the others.” I glanced up from Gia to the others. The

looks of disbelief and exasperation on their faces must

have mirrored my own. With a shrug of my shoulders, I

allowed Gia to slowly walk me back to the dais, careful to

keep the dais between the others and myself. Gia bubbled.

“Now isn’t this nice Solus? Now I can introduce everyone

properly. This person over here is Michael. Michael this

is Solus.” “Solus.” Entombed Michael. “Next to him is

Raphael. Raphael this is Solus.” “Solus.” Grinned

Raphael. “Now next to Raphael is Gabriel. Gabriel this is

Solus.” “Solus.” Chortled Gabriel. With a stern glance

at Gabriel, Gia continued. “Now next to Gabriel is Azrael.

Azrael this is Solus.” With a somber tone, but a sparkle

in his eye Azrael bowed his head slightly. “Solus.” “Now

next is Simon. Simon this is Solus.” Chirped Gia. With a

slight smile and a wink Simon responded. “Hello Solus.”

“Now this is Lillian. Lillian this is Solus.” With a

curtsey and a giggle Lillian responded, “Hi.” With an

excited twitter Gia continued. “Now that is everyone and

all properly introduced too.” Gabriel stepped forward; I

started back but stopped when I felt a squeeze from Gia’s

hand. “Solus greetings, now that you are awake I hope this

day finds you feeling well. After Gia’s splendid

introductions, I was told that the master would like the

pleasure of your company at your earliest convenience. I

am to leave now and inform him of your good health and

pending arrival. May I do so at this time?” “I’m sorry

Gabriel but no you may not.” “Why what’s wrong? Don’t you

feel well? Do you need to sit down?” Gia quizzed with

concern on her face. “No Gia I feel fine, but currently

all I am wearing is a sheet. I really do not feel it would

be appropriate to present myself to my host while dressed

in this manner. As a matter of fact, I am really

embarrassed to be standing in front of a group of esteemed

guests dressed in only this manner.” Gia giggled. “Oh

silly me, in all the commotion I forgot. I have clothing

and a pair of shoes for you here in my bag. They should

fit as they were made you.” From a bag draped over her

shoulder Gia pulled out four packages and a pair of lace up

loafers. “Gabriel, now that I seem to have suitable

attire, please inform my host that I am feeling well and as

soon as I get dressed I will seek him out for an audience.”

“Very well, I will inform him of your health and pending

arrival. I now take my leave.” As Gabriel left, I leaned

over to Gia and whispered. “Gia, where may I change?”

“Huh, change?” Her eyes grew wide in disbelief. “What are

you going to change into? How can you change into

something else?” “No, no, no, I mean where can I get

dressed? I really cannot stand here in my all together

with everyone watching me as I try on the clothing so

graciously offered. A little privacy would be

appreciated.” “Uh Michael, Solus says he needs a little

privacy to try on his new clothes. He really isn’t

comfortable with everyone watching him. Since he is awake

now, does everybody have to be here?” “No Gia.” Michael

sighed. “There is no reason for all of us to be here.

Solus, you will still require a guide for a while. Who

among us would be your preferred guide?” “Michael, I

believe Gia and I have developed a repot. If it would not

cause too much trouble, I believe she would adequately

execute the role as guide.” Then much to my surprise Gia

jumped up hugged my neck while squealing, “You picked me!

You picked me! I was hoping you would pick me!” With a

humph from Michael, a giggle from Lillian, and disguised

coughs and shielded smiles from the rest, Gia blushed and

then let go of my neck. As Gia stood there, her face red,

her hands worrying behind her back and slowly scuffling her

feet, Michael continued. “As you wish Solus, I believe Gia

can adequately complete this assignment. Since, she seems

willing.” A muffled laugh spontaneously burst from the

rest of the group while Gia blushed even redder. “As I was

saying, since Gia seems willing she can remain to guide you

while the rest of us return to other activities.” At this

cue everyone, except Gia, left whispering and laughing

amongst themselves. After everyone left I turned to Gia.

“Gia, I think I need to get dressed now.” “Okay, go ahead

I think everyone is gone now.” “Ah, do you think you could

turn around. I was serious about privacy while changing?”

“Oh silly me.” She giggled as she turned around. “Is this

better? Now make sure everything fits all right. I am

supposed to report back how everything fit.” I sorted

through the clothing Gia provided and began to get dressed.

The attire was simple and similar to what the others wore.

It was snug where it needed to be snug and loose where it

needed to be loose and consisted of a tunic, trousers,

undergarments, and soft lace up loafers. As I dressed, Gia

stood gently rocking on her feet while humming a tune. I

stood up after tying my shoes. Everything seemed to fit

comfortably. “Gia.” “Yes.” “You may turn around now and

tell me how I look." With a hop and a flourish Gia turned

around then with what was suppose to be a serious

expression she looked me over from head to toe, then made a

circular motion with her hand indicating I should turn

around. After complying with her request, I asked in a

chuckle. “Well do I pass inspection?” With a twinkle in

her eye and a grin she replied. “Hmmm not quite as exotic

than with just the sheet, but with your tendency to glow, I

don’t think you will go totally unnoticed.” Then with a

skip toward me that made me step back, she looked at my

face with a slight pout. “Still skittish Solus?” She

carefully reached out and started tugging on my clothing

smoothing out wrinkles. “By the way, you are glowing

again. Now tell me how the clothes fit. Are there any

rough or sticky patches? Is the fit all right? Not too

tight anywhere?” she asked. About this time my stomach

started grumbling. Gia looked surprised and then giggled.

“I guess we ought to get you something to eat.” Slightly

embarrassed I replied. “I think I had an appointment as

soon as I was dressed. I can wait until later for food.”

“Solus, are you trying to get me into trouble? You picked

me as your guide. We did get you dressed, but if you show

up with your tummy grumbling everyone’s going to think that

I cannot handle this assignment. Now come with me and we

will get you something to eat, then we will get you to your

appointment.” Gia gently enfolded her arm into mine and

intertwined our fingers together. I walked with her up to

the wall and suddenly a door irised open. Outside the door

was a walkway between rows of cherry trees in blossom. As

we stepped outside I saw that the trees formed a canopy

over the walkway. The smell was wonderful as Gia led me

down the path. I didn’t notice at first but there were

several paths. Each seemed lined with a different type of

fragrant tree or flower. I also noticed other people

walking, talking, laughing and working on and among the

various pathways. I kept noticing more and more people

glancing at Gia and myself. I started getting self-

conscience noticing more and more subdued laughter and

shielded glances. I bent over and whispered to Gia, “Gia,

am I glowing again or is something else wrong?” “Huh, no

you’re not glowing and everything seems all right. Why?”

“Well everyone seems to keep glancing over here at us then

snicker as they look away.” She bubbled. “Of course, you

are new. We don’t get a lot of new people here. They’re

just curious about you.” We continued walking for a little

while then I saw another building. It looked like an open-

air market. There were stalls with various types of food

and tables with benches where several people ate. “Ah

Gia.” I began as my stomach rumbled again “How am I

supposed to pay? The clothes feel wonderful but there’s no

pockets and I don’t seem to have anything to barter.”

“Pay, barter?” Solus, I don’t understand. Those who like

to garden grow the food. Those who like to cook prepare

the food. Those who need or want to eat, eat the food and

those who like to clean, clean. Everyone else helps out

where they can. Right now you need to eat, a growling

tummy told me so.” Suddenly I heard a chuckle behind me

and a mild tenor said. “Better do what she says Solus, our
little Gia can be quite forceful when she sets her mind to

be.” Gia turned and exclaimed. “Simon! What are you doing

here? Are you checking up on me? “No, no, no Gia.” Simon

laughed backing up putting his hands up in mock defense of

Gia’s glare. “Some of the rest of us have to eat

occasionally you know. I just happen to see you two over

here and thought you might like to share a table.” “I…I’m

sorry.” Gia blushed. Simon started laughing again. ”Gia,

there is no reason to apologize. You and Solus go get

something to eat and I’ll go save us a table.” There was a

selection of breads, vegetables, and fruits fixed in every

conceivable way. I selected a couple of rolls and a clear

semi-sweet liquid. I saw Simon over at one of the tables.

I went over and sat down while Gia continued to make her

selections. She suddenly looked up with panic on her face

until she spied Simon and myself. “Uh oh, I think you and

I are going to get an earful when Gia gets over here. For

just a moment she thought she lost you.” Laughed Simon.

Gia came over set her plates down on the table and then

gave Simon and me a look. She then looked at my plate.

Her look turned from annoyance to concern. “Solus is that

all you are going to eat?” “Gia. Remember Solus has been

asleep for a long time. It may take him a little while to

get use to eating again. Eating a little bit now may be

better that trying to eat more. Besides, he can always go

get a little more if he is still hungry.” “Oh. Sorry I

forgot, just as long as he gets enough to eat.” At this

point, Gia and Simon started talking back and forth while

eating. I slowly ate my rolls watching. I observed the

interplay between them and the other patrons. Everyone

seemed to know everyone else. They all talked, laughed,

and chatted amongst themselves. I just sat trying not to

be noticed watching everyone and everything. Suddenly Gia

started calling out. “Solus! Solus! Where are you Solus?”

I looked at Gia surprised. I was sitting right next to

her, but she was acting like she could not see me. I then

looked at Simon; he was looking around as well. I reached

out and touched her arm. She squealed then grabbed my

hand. “Solus! H…how did you do that?” “Do what? I was

sitting right here next to you watching everyone then you

started saying my name. You and Simon kept looking around

like I wasn’t here. I admit I wasn’t paying attention to

the conversation. I figured Simon and you were playing a

joke so I reached out and touched your arm. You then

grabbed my hand.” “Y…you weren’t there. I could see your

chair, your plate, and even your glass but you weren’t

there. Then suddenly you were there touching my arm.”

“Gia, could you not hold on so tight. You are kind of

hurting my fingers.” “Not until you tell me where you

were. You scared me just disappearing like that.” “Gia I

am telling you the truth, I was sitting right here the

whole time. Now please, my fingers are cramping and

turning purple.” Simon started chuckling. “So Solus another

new talent, I can tell it will not be boring with you

around. Everyone’s going to wonder what you will do next.

Gia, although normally I am sure Solus enjoys holding your

hand please loosen your grip just a little bit. His poor

hand is having spasms.” Simon then stood. “Now you two

have fun, I have another appointment in a few moments and

must be going.” With this he waved and started down one of

the paths. Gia loosened her grip but still hung onto my

hand. She then turned to me concern in her eyes. “Solus

did you have enough to eat? You only had two rolls.” “I’m

fine for right now. That seems to be all I can handle at

the moment.” I then had a twinge of memory. I suddenly

remembered that was all I ever ate after just waking up. I

turned to Gia and continued. “Gia, if you are done I

really think I have an appointment but I don’t know where.”

She looked at me. “All right, let’s clear our plates and

I’ll take you over.” We cleaned our table and someone took

our plates. Gia then grabbed my hand intertwining our

fingers as we walked down another path. In the distance I

saw another building with large columns. As we approached,

Gia seemed to walk just a little slower without her usual

running commentary. I become concerned. “Gia is something

wrong? You seem a little subdued. Are you tired? Should

we rest for just a moment?” She sighed. “No everything is

all right. I’m not tired. It’s just, well; after we get

there I don’t know what will happen. I liked showing you

everything so far, but after your meeting The One may

decide to assign a different more experienced guide. I

don’t know why I was included to begin with. Then you

chose me for a guide. It has been a lot of fun but he may

want someone else.” “Gia.” I patted her arm. “Don’t

worry. You have been an excellent guide. I honestly

believe you accomplished things the others could not at the

time. I don’t know what will happen at this meeting but I

will inform my host of my beliefs and that your continued

services as my guide would be appreciated.” Gia blushed

then snuggled closer resting her head on my shoulder. I

didn’t know why or how but somehow I felt like I needed to

protect her. When we got closer, I noticed a solitary

figure standing by an archway. The closer we got the more

the figure looked familiar until I realized it was Gabriel.

I felt a little guilty stopping to eat if Gabriel had been

waiting this whole time. “Solus, Gia.” Gabriel said while

bowing. “Did you enjoy your meal?” Gabriel then chuckled

and continued. “Oh those looks. I stopped and had

something and from the crumbs on Solus’ shirt I surmised

you did as well. Please wait while I announce you.”

Gabriel went into the archway, while Gia started brushing

crumbs and straightening my tunic. Gabriel showed up and

announced. “Solus he is waiting for you. Gia please wait

here with me.” Gia hesitated then nodded her head yes

without saying a word her eyes starting to tear. “Gia,

it’s all right. The Master just needs to talk privately

with Solus for a little while before you go in.” I went

through the archway down a hallway and then into a large

open room. There were plants and light everywhere. A tall

older figure came into the room. “Hello, Solus is it?” A

bass full of vibrato spoke. “Yes Sir that is the name Gia

gave me. I can’t seem to recall another."

“Understandable. Solus I wish to thank you.” “T…Thank

me?” “Yes, you came to me when I asked. In your mind I

saw all the possibilities of everything to be. It filled a

void that I did not realize even existed. It filled me

with such joy at the possibilities that I began creation.”

“Sorry Sir, I can’t remember or really understand what

you’re saying. I only remember Kassie, pain, hearing

Michael and Gia talking, and then Gia kissing me.

Everything else is in bits and pieces. Occasionally I’ll

even get flashes but nothing really coherent. I wish I

could remember more it sounds like an interesting

adventure.” “That is understandable; you have been through

quite an ordeal. I think that it would be best to let you

memory return slowly as you are ready to handle all the

implications. Now for Gia, do you feel comfortable having

her for your guide at this time?” “Sir I really hope I

begin to understand what is happening to me soon. As for

Gia, I promised her that I would relay the belief that she

has been an excellent guide. I honestly believe that she

has accomplished things that the others could not at the

time. Furthermore, I feel comfortable around her and truly

believe she shares the same sentiments. I know it may seem

strange but she seems to have a calming effect on me.” “I

see.” He responded with a slight grin on his face. “So do

you think she shares your sentiments? Would you mind

elaborating further on why you feel this way? Is it a gut

instinct or is there something else that gives you this

indication?” “Well Sir, Gia is so happy and bubbly. I

think that is what feels so comforting about her. She was

so glad when I chose her as my guide although her initial

reaction was just a little embarrassing. Her actions,

however, did seem to help me relax. I did not realize how

tense I was at the beginning. Even then she seemed to

instinctively know what to say and do to calm me down.

When we ate with Simon, I even felt relaxed enough to tease

her just a little bit. I seem to recall that is something

I don’t feel comfortable doing with many people. During

our trip here after eating, she seemed subdued. When I

asked what was wrong, she told me of her concerns about

being replaced as my guide. Then when Gabriel asked her to

wait with him while we talked she couldn’t say anything.

She just stood there nodding her assent and even with

Gabriel’s assurances I noticed the hint of tears on her

cheeks as I walked by. Sir, with all due respect, it may

seem a little selfish but I feel protective of little Gia

and tears are something I never want to see on her face.

The very fact that she would be so distraught at the

prospect of being replaced as my guide leads me to conclude

that she shares my sentiments. Sir, I am also worried.

There have been several incidents since I awoke, as I am

sure you have already heard. Gia was there and it seemed

that helped control the incidents. I don’t know if anyone

else would be as effective in helping me.” “I see, Solus

you don’t realize how it gladdens my heart to hear you

speak of Gia that way. I understand that you are not going

to fully comprehend what I am about to tell you at this

time, but my meaning will come clearer as you grow and more

of your memory returns. I also ask for your vow that for

the time being, you will not discuss the rest of this

meeting with anyone else including Gia. First of the

incidents you mentioned, I have heard of them. They are a

side effect of you being present at creation. When I spoke

the words of power, your body and mind could not handle the

magnitude of forces flowing through and around them. For

lack of a better solution, you conscience mind shut down.

The forces kept flowing through and around you, but your

sub-conscience not your conscience mind started directing

the flows in ways your body could handle. That is the

reason you can instinctively do some things that you cannot

do intentionally. Eventually your conscience mind will

learn to control the flows as well but that will take

practice and hard work. However, until you master that

conscience control and even sometimes after, you will

occasionally have embarrassing moments when you trigger the

flows by accident. The glowing symbols that appear are

actual physical manifestations of the words of power. I

foresaw the possibility, but the actual manifestation is

simply breathtaking. The reason I let you sleep so long

was to allow your body and mind to heal and allow the flows

time to fully integrate within you. At first you radiated

such power, I was the only one who could approach you

unscathed. Now Solus, this is very important and I want

you to listen very carefully. You are very powerful, but

untrained. Right now you could hurt someone very seriously

unintentionally. The others do not have your power and no

real way to defend against it. That is why it is important

that you make a diligent effort to learn and control the

flows. Now before you ask, Gia is not at risk from you.

Second, as you may have noticed Gia is not typical around

here. While you were resting, I took the liberty of

learning more about you and how I could help you integrate

the flows. From your mind I sensed that you felt you

needed a companion. Since it took awhile for you to heal I

began to correlate the qualities you considered necessary

and desirable for a companion. I must say it was quite an

interesting mixture of qualities you required for an ideal

companion. She has been one of my most interesting and

intriguing projects to date. Although totally loveable,

most find her exasperating at worst and totally amusing at

best. Yet, if she stubbed a toe she would have friends and

stout defenders lining up to make it better, including you

it seems. But Solus although it does my heart good to hear

that my efforts are truly appreciated, I must caution you.

Gia was made as a companion to you. She has all the

qualities for which you have searched. Like wise you have

all the qualities and potential for which she is searching.

From what you have described, she recognizes this in you

just as you recognize this in her. You both instinctively

choose each other’s company and try to protect each other

physically as well as emotionally. But Gia is an

individual; just like you she has freedom of choice. She

is a companion, a friend, and a confidant. She is not a

possession. If she chooses you, then likewise you will

become her companion, friend, and confidant. Please don’t

make the mistake of taking her for granted, just like you

would not like to be taken for granted. One last piece of

information, Gia is a total innocent, much like you

yourself are right now. As you grow together, your memory

will return slowly. If she chooses you for her companion,

a link will also grow between you. Please remember then

that she will share a small portion of those memories

through this link. When you are both ready to proceed

further, you will both instinctively know it. Don’t push

it. Let it grow naturally. Enjoy what you both feel and

embrace how truly unique the two of you are. Now finally,

Solus if Gia chooses you, you will become not only her

companion, but her protector and teacher as well. Solus, I

know you didn’t understand everything I just explained;

however, I do need an answer. If Gia chooses you as well,

will you agree to be her companion and protector?” I stood

there dazed. I didn’t know what to say. Everything I had

just heard swirled around and jumbled up in my mind. I was

a picture of confusion. Then the thought of Gia’s tear

stained cheek came to my mind. She had only been with me a

little while yet I couldn’t imagine anyone taking her

place. The very thought hurt. I then realized I hurt all

over and looked down at my hands. They were glowing again.

“Sir can I ask one question before I answer?” “Go ahead.”

“Will Gia really be safe with me like this? If something

happened by accident, I heard what Michael said about me.”

“Solus, Gia will be perfectly safe with you. Even now

without realizing it you’re projecting a protective barrier

around her. She and myself are perhaps the only people who

could touch you without harm right now.” “Then Sir if she

finds me worthy, I will consent to become Gia’s companion

and protector.” “Good, that’s exactly what I wanted to

hear. Now take a few moments and calm yourself, I can’t

very well send you outside glowing now can I? When you’re

ready, please stay with Gabriel and tell Gia I would like

to speak with her. Oh Solus, would you do me a favor?

Before sending Gia in here, please consul her and tell her

everything is all right. A bubbly, giggly Gia is one thing

but a weepy, sad Gia is another thing entirely. It really

wouldn’t do for me to lose my composure in the face of

crocodile tears. Thank you.” He was suddenly gone. It

took a little while before I stopped glowing. It really

was easier when Gia helped. I then proceeded down the

hallway back out of the archway. Gabriel stood on one

side, Gia the other. It looked like Gia hadn’t moved an

inch since I left. I went over to her, put my arms around

her, and hugged her to my chest. She returned my hug.

“Gia.” “Uh huh.” “It’s all right, everything is fine. He

asked me to send you in to talk to him. So now it is my

turn to keep Gabriel company. He also said he wanted to

see the happy Gia not the weepy one.” With this Gia hugged

me harder and buried her face into my chest moving her head

back and forth. “Gia?” “Uh huh.” “Did you just wipe your

nose on my new shirt?” “Uh huh.” “Why may I ask?” Gia

hiccupping replied. “B…because I d…didn’t have a h…

hankie.” I gently lifted her chin with my finger. Slowly

I used my shirttail in my other hand to wipe away her

tears. With her face clean, I kissed her forehead. Gia

giggled. “That’s better.” I grinned. “Now go have your

meeting. I’ll be waiting here with Gabriel for you to get

back. I really can’t go anywhere without my guide. The

only place I could go is the food court and since my tummy

is not grumbling I don’t really need to go there.” Gia

giggled again and then went through the archway. I watched

her as long as I could then sighed as she blinked out of

sight. Gabriel then chuckled. “That’s little Gia, just a

bundle of emotions.” He then reached behind him picking up

a clean towel and water basin and handed them to me. “Here

Solus, you should be able to clean off the worst of the

mess on your shirt with this.” I thanked Gabriel then

proceeded to try and clean my tunic as best I could.

Gabriel continued. “When Gia gets back, I think you need to

get her to take you to see Beleau. Beleau can get you a

couple of changes of clothing so that you have something to

wear while those are laundered. She can also get you a

supply of handkerchiefs. With Gia as your guide, you will

need them as she never seems to have one of her own.”

“What if she doesn’t come back?” Gabriel guffawed. “Oh

this is rich. I’m sorry Solus, but that is exactly the

same thing Gia kept saying about you. You two are open

books where the other is concerned. Solus don’t worry.

Gia wants to be your guide as much or maybe even more that

you want her for your guide. She stood there sniffling the

whole time watching the hallway just like you are doing

now. Don’t worry; anyone could see that you two need each

other. You are like two halves of the same whole. She’ll
be back in just a few moments then she can help you get a

clean shirt and start the grand tour.” Although Gabriel’s

words were comforting, I still had my doubts about whether

Gia would agree to be my companion. I knew being a guide

was one thing but a companion as well. That seemed on an

entirely different level. I couldn’t remember anything,

yet I was instinctively drawn to her from the beginning.

It was her touch, her laugh, and then her kiss that woke me

from my slumber. The very idea of her refusal made my

chest start hurting again. I quickly looked at my hands

and started trying to control the glow. It seemed like an

eternity waiting there like that. I heard her steps before

I could see her in the archway. To me it seemed she was

walking in slow motion. As she came out of the archway,

she turned and bowed formally to Gabriel. She then turned

to me. I looked into her eyes fearing the worst, pain

slowly creeping from my chest. In a bound, Gia had her

arms around my neck kissing me. In that instant I knew she

had accepted. I engulfed her in my arms, kissed her back,

and burst into a radiance that engulfed, shielded, and

protected us both. I felt joy and love. I could have

stayed that way forever. Slowly, I started hearing a

laugh. Glancing up I noticed Gabriel was the source. He

was holding onto his sides, head back roaring. When he

noticed Gia and I looking at him he spoke. “Gia, that was

just plain mean. You had him so worried right up to the

last moment.” Gia grinned at me. “What was mean Gabriel

was Solus not telling me he had already agreed to be my

companion before letting me go in there. I was so

worried.” “Now Solus.” She said patted my cheek. “You’re

glowing again and why is your shirt wet?” Gabriel

interrupted still chuckling. “Oh ho! So that’s why he was

so worried. He thought you’d say no and just disappear

without saying goodbye. A couple of times it looked like

he was going in to look for you. Then the look on his face

when you came out and bowed to me first; you could tell his

heart was breaking; that his worst fears were coming true.

Gia, he had me worried. With Solus’ tendency to disappear,

if you hadn’t relented and let him know your true feelings,

we would have had to organize a search party for him. But

where would we look.” Gia’s grin turned to concern. She

looked me in the eye. “Solus is this true?” I hugged her

tighter and whispered. “Y…yes. I couldn’t tell you. It

wasn’t allowed. You had to decide for yourself. You had

to choose. I chose you, but you had to choose me as well.

I waited and waited but you took so long and I started to

worry. What if you said no? The idea of you saying no

hurt, I wanted to find you, but knew I couldn’t. You had

to choose but it hurt so much. Then I saw the glow. I

tried to control the glow. The glow could find you, hold

you, protect you but you had to choose first. I had to

stop the glow but that hurt too. You then came back

walking so slowly with no expression. I was controlling

the glow, but just barely. You stopped and bowed to

Gabriel. I just knew you had said no. I sent the glow to

open a way to where I was before. No light, no sound, no

dark, no thought, no pain just a void. It had already

found the path but I wanted to say goodbye first. I looked

into your eyes barely holding the path closed waiting for

goodbye. Instead of goodbye, I got a kiss. Instead of no,

you said yes. The glow closed the path and came back to

embrace and hold us. I’m so happy. You said yes.” Gia

squeezed Solus then kissed him again. She then said, “Of

course I said yes. We talked about a lot of things. Then

he asked me if I would choose you as my companion. I

wasn’t ready for that question. He explained what it meant

to be your companion. He told me I had a choice just like

you had a choice but I had to choose not knowing how you

chose. Then I realized from the time I touched your face

that was what I wanted. I said yes. He wouldn’t tell how

you chose. That I would know once I got to the courtyard.

That if you still waited, you said yes and still waited for
my answer. But if you were gone, then you said no and left

with another guide. I was so scared. I didn’t know if you

were still here. When I saw you I was so happy, I knew you

said yes also and decided to let you know my answer in my

own way. So here we are, we both had a choice and chose

yes.” I just held Gia for a little while. I felt happy,

warm, and safe. Gia then gave me a squeeze and said,

“Solus this feels nice but you need to calm down. You’re

glowing again and why is your shirt wet?” I grinned down

at Gia. “This is nice. I can’t help glowing when you hold

me like this and the reason my only shirt is wet is someone

forgot her hankie. I did the best I could with available

resources to clean it. So now my shirt is wet.” Gia

blushed then smiled up at me. Then we both turned back to

Gabriel. He was still laughing, “You two. Gia quit

hugging him so tight. You’re squeezing the glow right out

of him. Now as I was telling Solus before, I think a stop

at Beleau’s is necessary. He needs a couple of clothing

changes and a few other items. Now I’m going to tell you

both a secret. The only two people that had a doubt or

question about if you were companions instead of when was

you two. Everybody and I do mean everybody else that saw

you two together knew. We could all tell within a few

moments of seeing you together. Even Michael commented

that all we needed to do was send Gia because that was the

only one Solus really needed. The rest of us were just

window dressing. Now official guide Gia, I need you to

guide Solus away from here so I can stop laughing long

enough to do my job. Personally I would suggest Beleau’s

because now your blouse is just about as wet as Solus’

shirt.” With this Gabriel started making shooing motions

and started laughing again when Gia looked down at her

blouse and started blushing again. Gia grabbed my hand and

we started down the path. I glanced back at Gabriel. He

waved then mouthed. “Don’t forget the hankies.” He started

laughing again as I nodded my head yes. Gia had her head

on my shoulder as we walked. Slowly the glowing dissipated

as we continued. “Solus, we need to talk a little bit.”

“All right.” “One of my jobs as your companion is to help

you learn to control the glowing. The One said it wouldn’t

hurt me, that somehow I’m connected and protected by it.

That’s the reason I had to wake you and no one else.

Someone else might accidentally get hurt if they touched

you while you’re unconsciously glowing. I didn’t want

Gabriel or anyone else to know. The One said this is

something private between just the three of us and that a

practice place would be provided after you became better

acquainted with some of the others.” “Gia, I was also told

we were connected and you are protected by my glow. But I

can’t remember very much before you woke me up. The One

said my memory would return in time. I’m sorry if I can’t

share as much with you as I would like, but until more of

my memory returns I don’t know what is safe to tell you or

the others.” “Solus I have another question. Before you

said you opened a pathway to where you were before. Do you

mean the building where you were sleeping?” “No, part of

me was in that building, but I remember another place. I

can go there but once there I forget how to come back. I

was there when you called me by touching my face. When you

called a path opened and I came. I think I was there a

very long time. Long enough to forget everything and

partially heal. Now I’m here with you and I can finish

healing. I think the glow is also part of the healing

because I start to remember when I’m with you.” “Solus,

what would have happened if you went there?” “I don’t

know. I don’t think I can come back by myself. Someone

has to call because I forget everything once I get there.

Before, part of me was here but this time all of me would

have gone. I would have been there not remembering my way

back. I really don’t know what would have happened.”

“Solus that scares me.” Gia stopped and hugged him. “If

you had gone there I could not have found you again.” I
returned her hug. “Don’t worry for some reason I think you

will always be able to find me and call me. Now can we go

ahead and go to Beleau’s? I really would like a clean dry

shirt. Since I don’t know anyone yet, I guess I’ll just

have to rely on the kindness of strangers.” “Oh you.” Gia

gave me a squeeze then a faint tickle. When I started to

protest the tickle, she grabbed my hand and we started down

the path again toward Beleau’s.
