READ Saskatoon

Baby and Me2nd Edition

This book was written for you.

It has information that will
help you understand your
pregnancy. This will help you
and your baby to be healthy.
You can also use it to keep track
of important information like
doctors appointments. This
book reminds you to take a
vitamin, eat nutritious* food
and drink lots of water, juice
and milk every day.

A pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, or 9 months. This is from the

first day of your last period to when you deliver your baby. Your
doctor will help you figure out how long you have been
pregnant. This will help you to understand the changes to your
body. It will also help the doctor tell if your baby is growing the
way it should.

This book divides your pregnancy into 4 trimesters*. A

pregnancy is three trimesters long. The book also includes the
trimester after your baby is born. Each section explains what to
expect for you and your growing baby.

This book also gives information on reading to your baby even

before it is born. Your baby will know your voice. It is important
for parents to show their children that reading and books are
important. This will help them later in school.

*nutritious: healthy, good for you

*trimester(s): three months

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your uterus* will

grow to the size of a
watermelon!

Your breasts
(boobs) will become
larger. They will
feel full and heavy.
They may feel sore.

Your nipples will become darker and wider.

Stretch marks will appear on your breasts and belly. You

may get a dark line on your belly. Your belly button may
stick out.

You will probably urinate (pee) more. Drink lots of water.

You will feel tired. Get plenty of rest. Take a nap every day!

You still need some exercise. Its good for you and your
baby. Exercise will help you when you are having the baby.

Its okay to continue having sex. Condoms help protect you

and the baby from sexually transmitted diseases (STDS).

You may experience morning sickness (feeling like you will

throw up). Try to eat small, healthy snacks instead of big
meals.

Drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit, vegetables and whole
grain foods to avoid constipation.*

Dont lie down right after you eat. Dont eat the foods that
give you heartburn. You may also have more gas (farts) and
feel bloated.*

Check your weight during your pregnancy. You should try to

gain about 30 pounds. This is the healthy amount for you
and the baby.

Mood swings, and maybe headaches, are normal due to

changing hormones.*
Remember, all these changes are normal. But
every pregnant woman is different. Some
women feel all the changes; some feel none.

*constipation: you have to push very hard to poo

*bloated: your belly feels full of water or gas
*hormones: things in your body that make your moods change

BREASTFEEDING
Breastmilk is better for babies in so many ways.

It has all the

nutrition your
baby needs to
grow.

Its easier on
tiny tummies.
If you
breastfeed,
your baby is
less likely to
have
diarrhea* or
to be
constipated*.

Its less likely to make your baby too fat. Thats because you
cant overfeed it.

Babies are almost never allergic to breastmilk and breastfed

babies are less likely to have allergies.

It can keep your baby healthy; breastfed babies get sick much
less often.

AND:
It creates a special time for you and your baby.
It costs nothing.
It never goes bad.
It is always ready at a moments notice.
No bottles to wash, heat up, refrigerate and lug around.
*diarrhea: runny poop
*constipated: baby has to push hard to poop

THE FIRST TRIMESTERBABY

During the first three months, the baby grows fast. Things like drugs and alcohol are very harmful
to babys development.
First Month

The sperm* and egg* join together. They attach to the uterus, which is joined to the vagina. The uterus is far
up inside the woman. The baby will grow here.

The heart, brain, spinal cord (back), arms and legs and nervous system (nerves) all start to form.
Your baby is smaller than a single grain of rice 5 mm* long, and weighs about 0.4 grams (0.01 oz*).

Second Month

Mouth, eyes, ears and nose form.

Brain develops more. Muscles, bones and male penis form. Heart beat is stronger.
Baby is about 2224 mm* (1 inch) long and weighs 1 gram (0.36 oz.*).

Third Month

All inside organs are formed. Baby starts to move around. Toes, fingers and fingernails form.
Baby is 9 cm* (3.5 inches) and weighs about 15 grams (1/2 oz.*).

*sperm: thing that swims from the man to the female egg, comes out of penis in semen
*egg: produced by woman
*mm: millimeters

FEELING SICK TO YOUR STOMACH?

Never forget to eat!

Carry snacks
with you. An
empty
stomach is
trouble.

Nibble on your
way to work or
school or
anywhere.

Try to eat
small meals.

Snack on healthy foods.

Pack a fruit you can keep down. Bananas and apple sauce
often calm the stomach.

Keep babys needs in mind. Eat what makes you feel

better. But dont forget to add something healthy for baby.

Water, please. Drinking extra water is important if you are

throwing up.

Try a cup of peppermint tea.

Try to stay away from spicy food or fast foods.
Get lots of sleep.
Eat something before
you even get out of
bed in the morning.
Try crackers or piece of
fruit.

Avoid smokers. And

dont smoke yourself. Smoking hurts you and the baby.

EATING RIGHT: GROWING A BABY ON

THE RIGHT FOODS!
Feeding your baby right starts before it is born. Remember,
eating right helps the baby, and helps you feel better.
Grain Products: Aim for 5-12 servings a day

Breads and cereals are a good source of energy. Your baby

needs them to grow and you need them

to fight morning sickness and

constipation.

Breads and cereals include:

Try to choose whole grain cereals,

breads and noodles over white ones.

The fibre* in whole brain foods will help your bowels keep

regular and give you an important vitamin called folic acid.

1 piece whole wheat toast or

bread

1/2 cup of cooked rice,

spaghetti or noodles

1 small homemade muffin

1/2 hamburger bun, hotdog

bun, pita bread, bagel

3/4 cup hot cereal

1 medium pancake or waffle

Vegetables and Fruit: 5-10 servings a day

Fruits are full of healthy stuff that your
growing baby needs. They also provide
the main source of fibre*. Lots of fibre
help keep your bowels regular and help
slow down the rate that sugar gets into
your blood stream. This will help you feel fuller longer.

*fibre: The parts of food that fill us up and help in digestion.

28

READ Saskatoon

Baby and Me2nd Edition

Choose the bright yellow, orange, red and dark green

vegetables over the light or pale coloured ones. The darker
coloured vegetables and fruit have more vitamins, minerals
and disease fighting compounds.
1 cup of dark leafy greens
(spinach, romaine, swiss
chard)

1/2 cup cooked vegetables

(broccoli, peas, green beans,
corn)

1/2 cup vegetable or fruit juice 1/4 cup dried fruit

(tomato, apple, or orange)
1/4 of a cantaloupe or honeydew melon

15 grapes

1 banana, apple, orange,

mango

1 medium carrot, potato,

sweet potato

Milk Products: 3 4 servings of low

fat milk products each day
Dairy has calcium which builds healthy
bones for baby and you. Try to eat dairy
that is low fat, so you get the good stuff
without the added calories. If you have
trouble drinking milk, you can choose
orange juice with calcium in it. Eating
canned salmon with bones is also a choice.
The milk products have calcium in them for growing your
babys bones and teeth.
1 cup milk

3/4 cup yoghurt

2-3 ounces of cheese

1-2 slices processed cheese

1/2 cup pudding or custard

29

Baby and Me2nd Edition

Meat and Alternatives: 2-3 servings a day

Protein is very important to you and your baby. The protein
and iron in these foods are important for your growing babys
cells, brain, skin, blood and your growing blood supply.
Meat and meat alternatives include:
1/21/3 cup cooked or
canned beans, lentils, leg
umes

1/2 can of tuna or salmon

3 ounces of cooked poultry,

meat or pork

1/3 cup tofu

2 eggs

YOU ARE IMPORTANT

Eat lots of different foods. Every

time you go shopping, put a new
fruit or vegetable in the cart.

A little treat goes a long way. Got

a craving? Try to limit yourself to
one or two. You dont need a
whole bag of cookies.

Dont go without. Skipping a meal

doesnt work. Eat regularly and if
that isnt enough and you are still hungry, eat a little many
times a day.

You have 9 months to build a healthy baby. No ones perfect.

If you miss out on the fruit today, you can double up
tomorrow.

WATERYOUR MOST IMPORTANT

LIQUID
It is important to drink lots of
water during your whole
pregnancy.
Try to lower your intake of caffeine
in coffee and regular tea. Caffeine
can cause you to have headaches
and interrupt your sleep. Aim for 8
cups of water a day.
If you enjoy herbal teas in place of coffee these are some of the
safe ones to have during pregnancy:

Citrus peel

Ginger

Orange peel

Rose hip

Lemon balm

Ask your health care provider about other herbs or herbal teas
that are safe to use in pregnancy.

SUPPLEMENTS
It is important for you to take a prenatal vitamin while you are
pregnant, even when you follow the eating guidelines. You
and your baby need extra vitamins and minerals during this
amazing journey of pregnancy and eating food alone cannot
meet all your growing babys needs. Taking supplements
alone without eating healthy food will not give you or your
baby the energy or fibre you need.

OLD WIVES TALES

Im not going to have a baby
with rashes all over her body.
So no way am I taking those
vitamins.
Not taking your prenatal vitamins will
hurt the baby. They will not cause
rashes.

I can hardly wait until the baby is born. You

cant get pregnant when youre
breastfeeding.
Wrong! Breastfeeding is not birth control. You can get
pregnant just as easily when you are breastfeeding as when
you're not. Don't take chances. Take the pill, or use those
condoms, or get the shot.

Dont lift that! Youll hurt the baby.

Lifting bags of groceries or that crying child will not cause you
to lose your baby. But, check with your doctor if you are lifting
heavy loads all day long.

Ask the doctor

to explain hard words to you. Tell

your doctor if you dont understand.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!

Before the Baby

Ask your family and

friends to help you
while you are
pregnant. Ask them
to help you and your
baby be healthy.

Be good to yourself.
Do fun, healthy things to relax and feel nice. Take a bath.
Read a magazine.

Decide if you want someone a friend or family member to

go with you to the hospital to help you have your baby.

It is important to be around people who are helpful while you

are pregnant. Abuse of any kind is not good for you and hurts
the baby. Abuse may start or get worse while you are
pregnant. If you are being abused, get help. (See pages 25 26)

Is there a daddy? He needs to be healthy, too, if he wants to

be a father. He should help you and the baby be healthy.

Join a parenting group. You can share success stories and get
encouragement.

Being a mother is hard work. You may be tired. Stay healthy.

Eat well. Get lots of rest. Get help when you need to.

Join a prenatal* class or teen parent group. Join as soon as

you are pregnant. It helps to know you are not alone.

*prenatal: before the baby is born

HEADACHES
It's not unusual to get tension
headaches when you're pregnant.
Tension headaches which are the
most common kind of headache
can feel like a squeezing pain or a
dull ache on both sides of the head
or the back of the neck. If you've
always been susceptible to them,
pregnancy can make the problem
worse. For most women, headaches
tend to disappear during the second
trimester.
Here are a few more suggestions to help you get relief:

figure out what's triggering the pain. Keep a "headache

diary." Write down anything you've eaten in the 24 hours
preceding the onset of a migraine and what you were doing
when it started.

press a warm or cool cloth to your forehead or the base of your

neck. Cold compresses tend to work best for migraines

take a shower. If you can't take a shower, splash some cool

water on your face. A warm shower or bath can be soothing
for tension headaches.

54

get a massage.
don't go hungry or thirsty.
avoid fatigue.
get some exercise.

SLEEP
The biggest reason behind
sleep problems during
pregnancy is the growing
baby, which can make it hard
to sleep comfortably.
Suggestions for a good
nights sleep.

Sleep on your side. Lying on your side with your knees bent
is likely to be the most comfortable position as your
pregnancy progresses.

Cut out caffeinated drinks like soda, coffee, and tea from
your diet as much as possible.

Avoid drinking a lot of fluids or eating a full meal within a

few hours of going to bed at night.

Get into a routine of going to bed and waking up at the

same time each day.

Avoid rigorous exercise right before you go to bed.

Take short naps (30 to 60 minutes) during the day to make
up for lost sleep.

Wear socks to bedit may prevent cramps from cold feet!

Is the bedroom too hot? Or too cold? You body is changing
and you might have to change the temperature.

Try to get lots of fresh air. Walk to a friends house instead

of taking the bus.

All of these changes are

STAY SAFE
Looking after your safety means looking after your babys safety.

When your seatbelt gets tight, wear it anyway. Wear the lap
part low, under your belly. Wear the
shoulder part between your boobs.
Push the seat back to make room for
your growing belly.

Be extra careful on stairs. The extra

weight gain can throw your balance
off.

Wear shoes that are easy to walk in.

For now, give up high heels, or
platforms.

Move things that might make you trip

Dont climb to get things on top shelves.

YOU NEED TO MOVE AROUND!

Exercise is good for you and your growing baby.
Exercise helps:

you sleep better.

make you feel better.

OLD WIVES TALES

You cant have a bath while
you are pregnant or in the
last 6 weeks.
It is okay to have a bath up until your
water breaks. Check with your doctor if
you are having problems in your
pregnancy. Showers are okay.
Douching is not okay.

You cant get pregnant while youre

breastfeeding.
You can. It depends on how long you breastfeed. Talk to your
doctor about birth control after your baby is born.

A baby must be dressed very warmly.

A baby needs only one more layer than you. If it is warm
enough for you to wear a t-shirt, baby needs a t-shirt with an
undershirt. Dressing baby too warmly can cause your baby to
become overheated

My aunt said, You are carrying high, you

must be having a girl.
If you are carrying high (if the big part of your belly is up near
your boobs), its a girl, or the other way around. Every woman
carries her baby differently. No one can tell the sex of your
baby from looking at your belly.

BREASTFEEDING: WHY?
Almost every mother
can breastfeed. Your
body is ready to
breastfeed after you
have a baby.

Breastfeeding is good
for you and the baby.

Breast milk is the perfect

food for a baby.

Breast milk is different

from cows milk, and
easier for the baby to
digest. Babies may get
less diarrhea from
breast milk than from
formula or other milk.

Breast milk may help

protect the baby from
diseases.

Breast milk is free and is always ready.

Breastfeeding helps the mothers uterus return to its
normal size.

Mothers who smoke can breastfeed. They should try to

quit or cut down nicotine* will be passed on to the
baby.
Why not?
Some women may not be able to breast feed.
You shouldnt breastfeed:
If you have a serious disease or infection.
If you are using drugs or drinking alcohol.
If you have AIDS or are HIV positive.
Talk to your doctor before you start.
*nicotine: poison found in cigarettes

Leaking from your breasts, but usually this happens after
the baby is born.

THE THIRD TRIMESTER - BABY

Drugs, alcohol and smoking are very dangerous to the
babys growing brain.

Many babies
settle into a
head down
position now.

Babies born
before the 9th
month need
special hospital
care.
Month 7

Eyelids can open and close.

Baby can hiccup.
Baby knows its mothers voice.
Baby is 3542 cm (1416 inches) long and weighs about
1100 grams (2 1/2 lb4 lb)

Capable of responding to light, sound, and pain.

You may feel your baby kick or hiccup.
Month 8

Baby is getting crowded in the womb.

Baby is 4247 cm (1618 inches) long and weighs 2100
2900 grams (4 lb, 11 oz.6 lb, 5 oz.).

Baby can smile, frown, stretch, yawn and react to your

touch through your belly.

Baby is capable of seeing and hearing things.

80

Baby and Me2nd Edition

Month 8 continued

The only part of your baby remaining relatively

undeveloped is the lungs.

The baby can swallow, hear, and even recognize voices.

The baby will probably settle in the uterus head-down as
the birth time nears.

Babys head is about 1/4 of total body length.

Month 9

Baby movements are

sharp and quick; some
babies settle into a quiet
period just before birth.

The baby is 45 55 cm
(1822 inches) long and
weighs 29003200
grams (6 lb, 5 oz.7 lb or
more).

Toward the end of the

ninth month, your baby's
lungs have completed
development and are
ready for their first breath after delivery.

At term, average baby weight and length is 7 1/2 pounds

and 20 inches, respectively.

Though more in proportion with the rest of the body, the

head is still one of the largest parts of the baby.

The fingernails have now grown past the fingertips.

BABY CLOTHES
Suggestions:

Buy only the basics

before the baby is born.
You dont know how big
your baby will be, or
what gifts you might get!

Can you borrow clothes

from friends or family?

69 month sizes are a

good buy.

Dont buy newborn sizes.

Your baby may be too
big for these when its
born.

Dont get just one size of clothing. Babies grow very fast.
Buy machine washable and dryable.
Wash baby clothes before your baby wears them.
Dont put cotton baby hats in the dryer! They will shrink.*
Cotton is cooler for summer.
Buy things that are easy to take on and off. Changing and
dressing can make babies uncomfortable and then they
can become upset.

Buy second hand things. Babies outgrow their clothes

quickly.
*shrink: get smaller

a camera so someone can take a picture of you and the

baby.
glasses so you can see the baby (they wont let you wear
your contacts)
musicCDs. Try to bring relaxing music.

Important:
Think of some names for your baby. You have to fill out
forms with the babys names and the name of the father.
Think about what you will write down (fathers name, or

should fill out these forms, or get someone you trust to help
you.

babys wrist and ankle bands, name card.

GET READY TO GO NOW!

Get organized. Pack a bag with
all the things you want to take to
the hospital. You may be in a
hurry later. You will need to:

Decide who will go with you

to the hospital to help you
have your baby. Ask your
friend or a relative (someone
from your family) now. Will
you ask the father?

Decide how you will get to the

hospital a ride? a taxi?

How will you get home? You will need a car seat for the
baby.

There are three reasons for

breast-feeding: the milk is
always at the right
temperature; it comes in
attractive containers; and
the cat can't get it.

SIGNS OF LABOUR*:
Premature* Labour When you have any of the signs below, but
it is before the 37th week of pregnancy. Call your doctor.
You may only have one or two of these signs. Call your
doctor or go to the hospital anyway.
Contractions
Tightening or pains across your belly, back or legs that
continue and start coming more often.
Pain in your back, belly and/or thighs.
Show
Some pink stuff (mucus*) showing from your vagina. There
will be a little blood NOT dark red like your period. This can
happen just before labour, or a day or so before labour.
Water Breaks
Clear water comes out of your vagina. The baby has been
floating in it for 9 months.

What to Do:
1. Call your doctor. Follow your doctors directions.
OR
2. Go directly to the hospital.
3. Take your bag packed with what you want in the hospital, in
the delivery room, and for taking baby home (see pages 84
85).
4. Take a friend or relative with you who can help you through
your labour.
5. Try not to be afraid. Fear makes the pain worse. Having a
baby is hard work. Your friend or relative, the doctor and the
nurses will help you have your baby.
*labour: when you are having the baby
*premature: before the baby is ready
*mucus plug : a block in the cervix that protects the baby
from germs

STAGES OF LABOUR:
Early: This is usually the easiest and longest
stage. Contractions start and the cervix
opens 3 to 4 cm. You may have cramps
and/or a back ache. Moving around helps.
Try walking.

Active:
Contractions are faster and harder. It is

normal to feel tired, angry and scared at

this time. Hang in there! The baby is almost here. The cervix*

stretches to 78 cm.

Delivery:
When the cervix reaches 10 cm, the baby is ready to be born. Your
doctor and nurse will tell you how to help push the baby out. It is
important for you to focus on what theyre telling you. Try to do
what they ask. Try hard. Good girl!
After the baby is born, they will cut the umbilical* cord. They will
wrap your baby up to keep baby warm.
Now you will feel more contractions. The placenta* is coming out.
The placenta is smaller and softer than the baby and will come out
easily. You will feel tired, sleepy and happy afterwards.

After:
After the baby is born, you may feel sad and weepy. Your
hormones* are crashing. Your body is getting ready to breast feed
now.

*cervix: opening between the uterus and the vagina

*umbilical: belly button cord. The baby gets food from you
through this while it is inside you.
*placenta: sack that holds the baby in your uterus
*hormones: things in your body that make your moods
change

BREASTFEEDING: HOW?
Start as soon as you can after your
baby is born

Dont worry if you dont know how.

They will teach you in the hospital. Ask
the health nurse to help you after you
go home from the hospital.

Try to relax. Ask family and friends to

leave if you want.

Get comfortable sit in a chair or lie down. You can put the
baby on a pillow on your knees to raise it closer to your breast.

Unwrap your baby and hold him next to your skin.

Touch your nipples against your babys lips to help him open
his mouth wide like a yawn.

Help baby latch on (when the babys mouth closes around the
nipple) when his mouth is wide open.

Your baby will close his mouth around your nipple.

Hold your baby close to your breast and let baby suck.
The more you breastfeed your baby, the faster baby will learn
how to feed, and the more milk you will have.

Your breasts will feel softer after feeding your baby.

Burp the baby after each breast. Pat gently on the babys
back.
Get help if:
Your nipples are sore.
Your breasts feel engorged (hard and full).
Your baby seems too sleepy and has a hard time waking up to
feed.
Call your doctor or a health nurse.

IM NOT FEELING RIGHT. IS IT BABY

BLUES OR DEPRESSION?
The baby blues can happen in
the days right after the baby is
born and normally go away within
a few days to a week. A new
mother can have sudden mood
swings, sadness, crying spells, loss
of appetite, sleeping problems, and
feel irritable, restless, anxious, and
lonely.
Postpartum depression can
happen anytime within the first year after childbirth. A
woman may have a number of symptoms such as
sadness, lack of energy, trouble concentrating, anxiety,
and feelings of guilt and worthlessness.
The difference between postpartum depression and the
baby blues is that postpartum depression often affects
a womans well-being and keeps her from functioning
well for a longer period of time. Postpartum depression
needs to be treated by a doctor. Counseling, support
groups, and medicines are things that can help.

READING WITH YOUR BABY IS

IMPORTANT!
Its never too early! Your
baby knows the sound of
your voice in the third
trimester of your
pregnancy.

Your voice is a comfort for

your baby.

You are your childs first

and best teacher.

Children learn language

and reading skills when
you read with them.
They learn how to use a
book.

Talk to your baby. Your baby loves the sound of your voice.
If your baby likes to be cuddled, read to your baby while they
are in a snuggly. They will get comfort.

Read board books (small books with big fat heavy pages) with
bright pictures.

Games and songs are fun to share with your baby.

Start a collection of books for your baby. Children who grow
up with books become readers, and do better in school.

Read with your baby everyday!

Use expressions and actions.
Have fun! This is the most important part.

Open a book and open a whole new world to a child!

Reading your Baby

Even before they can talk, babies try to
tell us what they want or need.
Sometimes we just need to know what to
look for. Part of the fun of parenting is
learning how your baby communicates.
After all, no two infants are alike.
Different babies may use different
expressions and movements to tell us
what they want.

Sometimes babies keep crying no matter what you do. This can be
hard for everyone, and it can be stressful. If you find yourself
feeling overwhelmed or angry, it might be a good idea to put the
baby down in the crib for a few moments so you can take a deep
breath and calm yourself down. No matter how hard it can be,
never shake or hit a baby to try to get him or her to stop crying. If
possible, see if you can get some help from a family member or a
friend.

Sometimes a simple change makes a difference for a crying baby.

You can try going with the baby to a different room or going
outside together, singing a song, taking the baby for a walk in the
stroller or a drive in the car, or giving the baby a bath. Sometimes
babies are upset by things like bright lights or noises that you
might not notice at first, and a simple change can make a big
difference.

HELPFUL TIPS

Pay close attention to

how your baby
communicates when she
needs a break or when
she is tired or hungry.

Take the daily schedule into account. How long has it been
since shes been fed? Does she need a nap? Has her diaper
been changed recently? Parents who keep daily activities in
mind have a better chance of understanding their babies
signals.

Your baby loves to see you and your facial expressions, so play
lots of face-to-face games with your baby.

Try to follow your babys lead. If shes showing you that shes
interested, keep playing. If she points to an object in the room,
name it and let her touch it if its safe to explore. Help her
learn that communicating works!

Try to be sensitive that your baby needs a break. If he turns

away while you are playing, wait for a moment to see if he
turns back to you. If he begins fussing instead, it might be time
to try something new or to let him relax for a moment while
you stay near.

Dont expect to understand every signal, or to be in sync with

your baby all the time. You wont always get it right.
Communication is never perfect. If youre trying, youre doing
a great job.

TOOLS FOR INFANT DISCIPLINE

There are many effective alternatives

to spanking. It is always preferable to
prevent misbehaviour rather than
punishing it afterwards. But when it
happens, you need to control your
anger and then respond in a way that
will teach your child what you want
her to do.
Babies who have learned to crawl
suddenly find the whole world is
available to them. It can be hard to
keep up with a one-year-olds
activities! It is very important to
babies development that they are allowed to explore so that
they can learn about the objects in their environment.
Create a baby-friendly environment. Your baby should be able
to explore freely without you having to worry about injuries.
Remove objects that are breakable, sharp, electrical, or can be
toppled over.

plug up electrical outlets

put cords out of reach
install stair gates
put locks on cupboards containing knives, toxic
substances, etc.
Spanking should I or shouldnt I?

Manitoba & Dr. Linda Rose-Krasnor

Grab, but dont slap hands

that touch dangerous
things. This will prevent
injury just as well.
Distract the childs attention
from activities that are dan
gerous. It is easy to get an
infant interested in another
activity if you make it look
exciting.
Control your temper. When
you get frustrated, put the
baby in a crib or playpen
and leave the room until
you have calmed down.
Understand that a baby communicates through crying. She is
expressing a need, not trying to annoy you. It is important to
respond to her cries so that she learns to trust you to meet her
needs.
