PASTORS CORNER Dear Parishioners,

This Sunday we hear about seeds scattered and sown that bear much fruit, and about a mustard seed that becomes so large that that it can provide a place for birds to nest in. In the wake of so many commencements and graduations, this is indeed an inspiring message. If the God of all creation can do this with a few seeds, what wonders might the Lord not work with those created most in Gods own image and likeness? It happens that this Sunday is also our national observance of Fathers Day. Such a day is always an inclusion of the whole family, of course. It takes the whole family to be the fertile ground for seeds to take root and grow and to produce a rich harvest for the Lord. Our thanks to our Dads living and deceased and our celebration of them is motivated by our recognition of sacrifices made and love shown in such fashion that God the Fathers own love and care has been made known to us through them. Dads and all parents living are still on the job until they draw their last breaths. Those with children at home are charged with being the first teachers and the best teachers; those whose children are grown are charged with good Christian mentoring and convincing modeling of stewardship and discipleship. Like Peter once asked of Jesus, children should be able to ask of their parents, Where else can we go? You have the words of everlasting life. On this Sunday that invites us to think about seeds that bear much fruit, my own thoughts turn as well to our St. Rita teachers. The Religious Education Program is on summer break and, this Friday, I will join with our St. Rita School administration, teachers, and staff to give thanks for another banner year. My heart is filled with gratitude to each and every one. These teachers actually have children watch seeds germinate and become plants, and watch chicks break through eggs to spread wings for the first time. (Parents are happy that this can take place in a classroom.) Science and all subjects taught, because of these dedicated and faith-filled folks, find meaning and understanding only in the light of faith. When our children sing from the sanctuary, from where you sit in the church you see the faces of the children; from where I sit, I see the faces of our teachers leading and our parents rejoicing. To me this says it all. Its worth every penny you put in the basket on Sunday! It is in everyday life, the living out of todays Gospel parables. I also pray that this Sunday inspires us to work and pray for vocations to ordained, consecrated, and committed life in our Catholic Church. Truly, these are seeds that need to be sown. Yes, Jesus said to pray to the Harvest Master, but we also have to be about the business of sowing seeds. These days, how likely is it to be heard in our homes that we would like to see a priest or a religious come from our family? A conversation around this topic would be just the right place to start. We might have all kinds of preconceived notion about where such a discussion might leadbut we might also be very surprised at the conclusions. Let the Spirit be our guide! Msgr. Richard

PASTORS NEWS NOTES

Thank you one again for the beautiful birthday celebration! Let me repeat that the best gift of all was seeing so many from every age group, all parish organizations and groups, getting together just to enjoy each others company and have a good time. I enjoyed every minute of it! Thanks to Joanna and Bob Singleton for all the Oldies But Goodies! (I certainly felt as though I were being treated as one of those myself.) Thanks to THE COMMITTEE: Paula Guettler, Ana Ptasinski, Rosemary Hagerott, Mary Taillac, Marilyn Delgatto, Andrea Bertollini and all who teamed up with them. And thanks to all of you for the inundation of cards, prayers, best wishes, and gifts! Through the mail, hand delivered, and by way of email, I received almost 300! So please accept my thanks and deep appreciation here; as I know you well, you would say, SAVE THE STAMPS. Will do! Love and my prayers backatcha! St. Rita Parish Salutes Brownie Troop 5361! This past week St. Rita Brownie Girl Scout Troop presented me with a check for $100 to aid the poor through our parish ministry. The Brownies staffed a lemonade stand at school to raise the money. Your hearts are in the right place, girls, and you have shown the best Girl Scout spirit! Thanks also to Girl Scout Leader Arlene Mansour and to all who supported the troop. Msgr. Richard

SAFEGUARD THE CHLDREN

Listen to Your ChildrenThis summer, when your children are not in school, on different schedules, are meeting new people and going to new places, make sure you talk to them often about their experiences and the people theyve met. Listen carefully to your children. If possible, observe and get to know the other children and adults who are part of your childrens summertime fun. Communicate your safety concerns to your children. Make sure they know they can come to you with any concerns. And, if you hear of or observe inappropriate behaviors, be sure to talk with people who are in a position to intervene. For help, you may call Assistance Ministry, 213/637-7650. Articles from the Archdiocese are on our website: st-rita.org (select Publications, then Safeguard the Children).
