Marylee Davies becomes new BC SPCA president

Marylee Davies, a partner in a leading Vancouver law rm, has become the new volunteer president of the BC SPCA. Marylee rst became involved with the society in early 2005 as a member of the Vancouver/ Burnaby community council. Her involvement with the community council continued until she joined the Board of Directors in June 2008 as a director at large. Marylee has been a member of the executive committee of the board for the past two years and served as rst vice president. Marylee is profoundly committed to animal welfare and to the mission of the BC SPCA. Her family, which includes ve golden retrievers, grew a short time ago with the addition of two horses who came into the care of the BC SPCA following a seizure by the societys cruelty investigations department. In her professional life, Marylee practises labour, employment and human rights law on behalf of major public and private companies and institutions, appearing before a variety of administrative tribunals and all levels of the British Columbia courts.

Special thanks to outgoing society president Cindy Soules

Hello everyone: The 2012 managers training session and AGM weekend wrapped up last week at UBC in Vancouver. Although it was a long week for all involved, initial reactions have been extremely positive from both staff and governance volunteers. I particularly enjoyed the Length of Stay workshop delivered by Dr. Kate Hurley and Dr. Denae Wagner, but there were many other fantastic workshops during the course of the week. I would like to thank managers and governance volunteers for giving so much of their time to attend this years event. We will be soliciting your detailed feedback on all aspects of the event in the next couple of weeks. Watch the provincial email bulletin for more information. Please join me in congratulating Marylee Davies on her appointment as volunteer president of the BC SPCA. Marylee has been a member of the Board of Directors for a number of years and will do a great job following in the footsteps of Cindy Soules, who has stepped down after two years as chair of the board. Thank you for your dedication to the society, Cindy! I would also like to offer my congratulations to the folks at the Cowichan Branch on another incredible effort at your annual garage sale. CEOs Corner

Welcome to Anna Terebka, who joins the society as the new manager of our Prince Rupert Branch. Anna comes to us with a background in forest resource management. While working for the Ministry of Forests and Range, Anna was responsible for the administration of forest tenures and forest stewardship plans in Mackenzie, B.C. Congratulations to Colby OFlynn, who has been appointed as the new branch manager in Quesnel. Colby has been with the society since 2010 and we are pleased to promote her to her new management role. Sarah Thompson joins our North Cariboo Branch as assistant branch manager. Sarah will be working closely with interim branch manager Debbie Goodine as they oversee the societys operations in Prince George during manager Angela McLarens maternity leave. Lori Dick has joined our revenue development team as development ofcer, corporate relations. Lori comes to us with many years of

Prince George, Kamloops exceed targets

The results are in from the BC SPCA City Challenge held in May in Prince George and Kamloops to determine which community had the greatest animal supporters. And the winner is...the animals! Both SPCA branches exceeded their fundraising targets during the monthlong challenge, with Kamloops raising $40,140 and Prince George raising $21,406. Congratulations and thanks to all the staff and volunteers who helped to organize City Challenge events, which included barbecues, pub nights, car washes, bottle drives, open houses, mall displays and paw print sales. Up next: A City Challenge between our North and South Peace Branches in August!

Cowichan sale raises $24,000

Congratulations to Cowichan volunteer Gail Berger and her amazing team for the outstanding success of their garage sale on June 2 and 3. The event, held at the Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, raised more than $24,000 for animals at the Cowichan & District Branch. A huge thank you to everyone who made the event possible!

Water now owing at BC SPCAs Wild ARC facility

After 15 years of trucking in water several times weekly, more than a million litres a year, Wild ARC has nally turned on the city water taps this week! The centre has survived to date without an on-site water source capable of supplying water for pools, laundry, dishes and drinking water for the more than 2,000 injured and orphaned wild animals it treats annually. In 2007, Wild ARC and its neighbours agreed to pursue the project through funding a portion of the line and by applying for federal and provincial infrastructure support, explains SPCA wildife services manager Sara Dubois. Although Wild ARC had raised a portion of its costs through fundraising and in-kind grants from local municipalities, the estimated $400,000 project could not proceed without the balance of costs. It took a generous gift from a life-long animal lover and resident of Oak Bay to complete the project. In June 2011, Wild ARC was notied of a legacy to the BC SPCA from Gladys Cavanagh, which could be used for the water line. The project was completed this month and the 15 years of daily water tank checks at Wild ARC to ensure an adequate supply for the day are over!
