Coaching Responsibilities & Code of Conduct


The Board members of the Ventnor Pirate Football Association (VPFA) have established a formal coaching code of conduct and responsibility to ensure that all of our Coaches understand what the goals, expectations, behavior and level of responsibility are in running a team in our program.

Goals of the Ventnor Pirate Football Association


Promote the enjoyment of the sport of football by providing every child who attends practice and is physically capable with the opportunity to learn the game of football and play and/or cheer for their team. Promote the values of teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, physical fitness and leadership to the children of the Ventnor Pirate Football Association through the game of football and cheerleading by providing them with a positive environment in which they will learn these values together with the fundamentals of the sport, enabling them to increase their enjoyment of the game. Try to build the self-esteem of our players and cheerleaders by teaching them the fundamentals of sport and the positive values provided by sport that will enable them to grow as a participant and a person.

Expectations of Coaches in the Ventnor Pirate Football Association


Each coach will be required annually to complete a coaching application form to be submitted and approved by both the VPFA Board and the Ventnor Board of Recreation prior to the first practice in August of the current season. Each coach will be required to be certified through either the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) or Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic in their particular sport by July 1st of the current season. For NYSCA the certification can be done online at www.nays.org The Rutgers Clinic (www.youthsports.rutgers.edu is offered at various locations around the State of New Jersey. Each ) coach will be responsible for the $25 membership fee for either as well as any additional fees for certification and renewal. A photocopy of your active membership card must be included with your annual coaching application. Each coach will be required to be certified in Basic First Aid. The Ventnor City Fire Department in conjunction with the Ventnor Pirate Football Association will offer a free annual training class for each coach to become certified in Basic First Aid. All coaches will be provided at least 14 days notice of the class date, time and location. A photocopy of the certification card/certificate must be included with your annual coaching application. Each coach will be required to read, abide by and sign the below Coaching Code of Conduct. A photocopy of this form must also be included with your annual coaching application.

All football and cheerleading coaches will abide by a Code of Conduct which includes the following provisions. The Ventnor Pirate Football Association will fully support all coaches who follow the below provisions. If any of these provisions are violated, the Association shall have the authority to impose a penalty that they see fit. Penalties can be one or more of the following, verbal and or written warning, suspension, probation and or termination. Verbal and or written warning can be handed down by the Associations President, Director of Football, Director of Cheerleading or any Board member. Suspension, probation and or termination will be decided by a majority vote of the Ventnor Pirate Football Associations Board Members. (The Board consists of the Associations President, Director of Football, Director of Cheerleading, Director of Fundraising, and a Senior Head Coach from either football or cheerleading).. If any of these provisions and or League provisions are violated during a league game, the Boards of the Atlantic County Junior Football League (ACJFL) and the Atlantic County Junior Cheerleading Association (ACJCA), at its sole discretion, shall have the authority to also impose any additional penalty it sees fit based on its bylaws.

I will place the emotional and physical well-being of my players ahead of a personal desire to win. Expected Behavior:
Using appropriate language in appropriate tones when interacting with players, league officials, game officials, parents and spectators. Include all players in team activities without regard to race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, body type, national origin, ancestry, disability, ability, or any other legal protected classification. Treat all players, fellow coaches, league officials, game officials, parents and spectators with dignity and respect. This includes NEVER engaging in physical assault at any time. The term physical assault includes but is not limited to hitting, slapping, pushing, spitting, kicking or striking in any way with any part of the body or any physical implement . This includes NEVER engaging in a verbal assault. The term verbal assault includes but is not limited to any verbal abuses, attempts to intimidate, being flagrantly rude, and or not controlling their language or actions. Encourage youth to participate in other sports and activities to promote all aspects of their development.

I will treat each player as an individual, remembering the large range of emotional and physical development for the same age group. Expected Behavior:
Recognize the differences of each child and treat each player as an individual while demonstrating concern for their individual needs, safety and well being. Encourage all players, regardless of skill level, to be included as a member of the team and to remain involved in sports. Recognize that some physical tasks, drills and demands are not appropriate for all youth. Recognize that youth may vary greatly in physical, social and emotional maturation and consider these factors when setting up competitions and drills by matching players of similar size, age, skill and maturity with each other.

Coaching Responsibilities & Code of Conduct I will do my best to provide a safe playing situation for my players. Expected Behavior:
Maintain a high level of awareness of potentially unsafe conditions. Protect players from sexual molestation, assault, physical or emotional abuse. Correct or avoid unsafe practice or playing conditions. Use appropriate safety equipment necessary to protect all players. See that the players are provided with adequate adult supervision while under the care of the coach.

I will promise to review and practice the basic first aid principles needed to treat injuries of my players. Expected Behavior:
Keep basic first aid supplies available in all practice and game situations. Recognize and administer proper first aid to an injured player. Demonstrate concern for an injured player, notify parents and cooperate with medical authorities. Protect the players well being by removing them from activity when injured and not returning them to activity if they are compromised by injury.

I will do my best to organize practices that are fun and challenging for all my players. Expected Behavior:
Establish practice plans that are interesting, varied, productive and aimed at improving all players skills and individual abilities. Devote appropriate time to the individual improvement of EACH player. Conduct practices that comply with ACJFL & ACJCA rules in both frequency and length of time (please see below). Practice session and/or team meetings will start no earlier than four calendar weeks prior to the opening of the regular season schedule. The date will be determined by the schedule. (Clinics can be run by ACJFL coaches without pads during the off season) Practice sessions may not exceed two hours in duration and may not end later than 8:30 PM. (Example, if players report and begin practice at 5:30 PM, practice must end by 7:30 PM.) There may be no more than four practice sessions between regularly scheduled season games. During the preseason there shall be no more than six practice sessions per week and no more than 2 per day. Conduct practices of reasonable intensity appropriate for the age and condition of the players.

I will lead by example in demonstrating fair play and sportsmanship to all my players. Expected Behavior:
Adopt the position of fair play and sportsmanship , teach and demonstrate that it is our basic moral code to treat others as we would like to be treated. Abide by and support the rules of the game as well as the spirit of the rules. Provide an environment conducive to fair and equitable competition. Use the influential position of youth coach as an opportunity to promote, teach and expect sportsmanship and fair play.

I will provide a sports environment for my team that is free of drugs, tobacco, alcohol and will refrain from their use at all youth sports events. Expected Behavior:
Be alcohol and drug free at all team activities and in the presence of players. Refrain from the use of any type tobacco products at all team activities and in the presence of your players. Refrain from providing any type of alcohol, drug or tobacco products to any of your players. Encourage parents to refrain from the public use of tobacco products or alcohol at team activities.

Coaching Responsibilities & Code of Conduct I will be knowledgeable in the rules of each sport that I coach and I will teach these rules to my players. Expected Behavior:
Become knowledgeable, understanding and supportive of all applicable game rules, league rules, regulations and policies. Teach and require compliance of these rules among players.

I will use those coaching techniques appropriate for each of the skills that I teach. Expected Behavior:
Teach techniques that reduce the risk of injury to both the coachs own players and their opponents. Discourage illegal contact or intentional dangerous play and administer swift and equitable discipline to players involved in such activity.

I will remember that I am a youth sports coach, and that the game is for children and not adults. Expected Behavior:
Maintain a positive, helpful and supportive attitude. Exercise your authority/influence to control the behavior of the fans and spectators. Exhibit gracious acceptance of defeat or victory. Accept and adhere to all league rules and policies related to the participation of adults and youth. Fulfill the expected role of a youth coach to adopt a children first philosophy. Allow and encourage the players to listen, learn and play hard within the rules. Place the emphasis on fun and participation.
