INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, marketer more concern about environmental sustainability in doing business because it can give impact to our earth. Reducing poverty and achieving sustained development must be done in conjunction with a healthy planet. The Millennium Goals recognize that environmental sustainability is part of global economic and social well-being. Unfortunately exploitation of natural resources such as forests, land, water, and fisheriesoften by the powerful few-have caused alarming changes in our natural world in recent decades, often harming the most vulnerable people in the world who depend on natural resources for their livelihood. Environmental sustainability is a management approach that involves developing strategies that both sustain the environment and produce profits for the company. Sustainability vision is to provide framework for pollution control product stewardship and new environmental technologies for the company and others to follow. Initiative keep green earth and maintaining the beauty of the environment increasingly taken seriously by many people in this country either government or private sectors. Among the many approaches taken are as inculcate and practice environmental conservation activities as part of business operations. Citing the countrys telecommunications service provider, DiGi Telecommunication Sdn. Bhd. (DiGi) recently introduced the Technology Operations Center (TOC) with the implementation of green features. Three and a half storey building construction area of about 20,000 square meters at the Subang Hi-Tech Industrial is part of DiGi's commitment to complete its operations with environmentally friendly function. Advantages that enabled the TOC are recognized as the first green data center in Malaysia through the award of the Gold Certificate of Ratification of the Green Building Index (GBI). It is a green building rating system in this country. Other than building, the integration of environmentally friendly is also applied to a range of services, personnel, work space, suppliers and customers.

Building Design

DiGi Green Building Engaging from a physical level DiGi have introduced various initiatives including past corporate environmental activities that were intensified as further reviewed the internal activities to live up to the DiGi Deep Green agenda. DiGi aware that the journey to go "Deep Green" will be a long one as changing people's mindset to be more environment-conscious is gradual and extensive.

One aspect of measuring an organisation's environmental impact is how the physical office structure is designed. It should be part of a Corporate Responsibility initiative to create a working environment that provides and supports employees' daily operations while creating an atmosphere of positive energy. A natural hillock on the Shah Alam building site was preserved and incorporated into the design, instead of altering the landscape to create

much-needed work space. Glass, chrome and steel elements feature prominently in our building design with large, wide windows that allows natural sunlight in to help reduce electricity consumption. The modern and innovative look of the structure is softened by greenery and fresh flowers on every floor and corner of the building.

A Building Maintenance Automation system is in place to help regulate the usage of lighting and air-conditioning during peak and off-peak periods. Pockets of Chill-out areas, recreation space and soothing water features within the office areas that function as an oasis for tired employees seeking inspiration and friendly conversation with their colleagues in a relaxing atmosphere. The adoption of an open office concept without offices and partitions; creating a work environment that clearly reflects an organisation with minimal hierarchical barrier. Ambitions & Goals a) By addressing the internal carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the area of: the mobile and IT networks the building and transport management the employees mindset b) By activating innovative solutions to reduce the shared climate impact with the external stakeholders through: the marketing the product the community programme

Paperless Office

Personal lockers for every employee

Mobile printing helps reduce unnecessary document being printed

DiGi started the ball rolling by converting the employee lines to e-billing starting from the middle of 2008. DiGi continued with the concept of a paperless office to minimize use of paper in the course of day to day business. DiGi continued to promote the service to the customers by simplifying the process to sign up for electronic billing and by displaying the e-billing service more prominently on our website. The deliberate absence of filing cabinets and desks with drawers/shelves to discourage the storage of printed documents. Mobile printing - minimum numbers of printers are provided and require more protocols for printing jobs in order to discourage unnecessary printing and requires passwords to be entered at the printer before any document is printed. Personal lockers are provided for each employee to store their personal files and effects, discouraging everyone to accumulate unnecessary paper. Recycling Management Certain daily operational measures at the office can be practiced to reduce our carbon footprint and wastage through recycling. Here are some examples of the measures taken:

i) Recycling mobile phones, its accessories and batteries ii) Separating waste into paper, glass and plastic before disposal iii) Replacing Styrofoam cups with ceramic mugs in the offices iv) Removing disposable crockery or cutlery from the office cafeteria and in-house dining areas v) Using recycled paper to produce corporate festive greeting cards

Technical operator centre DiGi have completed the construction of new DiGi Technology Operations Centre (TOC) in Shah Alam which will be fully operational by 2011. The TOC is the first Data Centre to receive the Green Building Index Provisional Gold Certification (Design Assessment), making DiGis data center the first in Malaysia to be awarded the standard. GBI is Malaysias industry-recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the build environment. Data centers are traditionally large consumers of energy. DiGis TOC has been designed to reduce energy usage as much as possible and incorporates a spectrum of environmentallyfriendly features. Environmental Features

COMMENTS/ DISCUSSIONS

DiGi Telecommunication Sdn Bhd is one of the Malaysias company that concern about the environmental sustainability issues. Although in business, company should thinking about how to generate high revenue with lower cost but DiGi still concern about this issue in order to save earth by build the green building that can give contribution to the earth. The DiGi Deep Green programme is corporate initiative to tackle this major challenge that affect the entire globe. The DiGi focused to address climate change aggressively within the sphere of influence. Based on a conservative strategy, it can reduce 30% of our carbon footprint by 2012. However, the company have decided to set an even greater challenge for the company and the ambition is to reduce 50% of our carbon footprint by 50% by 2012. To achieve this ambitious goal, company are embarking on various initiatives through a twoprong approach under the Deep Green programme. In addition, DiGi emphasize more on green characteristics that operate by using value of environmental friendly. The building uses the transmission technology that supported by hybrid solar energy and can give effect of reducing in carbon emissions for longer period of time. Then, by using the hybrid solar energy also can save the energy usage. So, there have many advantages towards environment through build the green building. Environmental awareness has increased dramatically, particularly since the organized environmental movement emerged in the late 1960s. Issues ranging from global warming to animal rights to species preservation to the protection of wetlands are now prominent in the media and in the minds of consumers. So, DiGi can achieve the objective to save the earth and make people safe and comfortable in this world.
