Voiced by MacFarlane himself, Ted wont leave Johns side, which leads to a series of increasingly awkward events in the grown mans life. Also starring Mila Kunis, Joel McHale and Giovanni Ribisi, TED pushes boundaries and brings the laughs with a quickness. (Meredith Borders)
THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Dir. Marc Webb Opens 7/3

I know, I know. We were all highly skeptical upon learning that a new reboot of Spider-Man was in the works just a few short years after Sam Raimis trilogy. But once we started to learn the details, our excitement grew. Its directed by Marc Webb, whose (500) DAYS OF SUMMER was nothing short of charming. Its written by Alvin Sargent, who penned the original trilogy and Steve Kloves, who wrote all of the HARRY POTTER films. And it stars perennially likable cuties Andrew Garfield (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, NEVER LET ME GO, the RED RIDING trilogy) and Emma Stone (EASY A, ZOMBIELAND, SUPERBAD) as Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. Not to mention Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Uncle Ben and Aunt May, and Rhys Ifans as elusive Spidey villain The Lizard! So Ill admit it - somewhere along the way, my skepticism turned into full-blown enthusiasm. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is on my must-see list this summer. How about yours? (Meredith Borders)
TO ROME WITH LOVE Dir. Woody Allen Opens 7/6

Woody Allens latest love letter to geography and humanity looks like easy, frothy fun. Its nice to see Allen back in front of the camera, and hes joined by an absolutely terrific cast: Jesse Eisenberg (sheesh, how long did it take for that inevitable creative pairing to happen?), Ellen Page, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Alison Pill (yay!), Roberto Benigni and the superb Greta Gerwig - who should honestly just go ahead and be in every movie ever. The trailer makes me smile with its easy and unabashed pleasantry and Allen-specific neurotic charm, and Im sure the movie will do the same. After the superb MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, it looks like Allens on a roll. (Meredith Borders)

BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD Dir. Benh Zeitlin Opens 7/13

This film was a tremendous success at Sundance this year (winning the Grand Jury prize and Best Cinematography), and its been called one of the best films of the year by many critics. Hushpuppy, a six-year girl from the southern Delta, leaves her home on a search for her lost mother as she battles her fathers ailing health and a host of prehistoric creatures released by changing environmental forces. Hushpuppy charges forward fearlessly on her quest as the apocalypse unfolds around her in this miraculous, moving film. A stunning achievement from first time director Benh Zeitlin, BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD is a remarkable tribute to an indomitable spirit. (Meredith Borders)

Two North Carolina presidential candidates, played by Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, embark on a campaign...to destroy one another! As election day nears, the candidates trade insults and gaffes with striking rapidity. THE CAMPAIGN skewers the state of American politics in a satire both pointed and hilarious. This is a film that manages to marry wit and charm in equal doses, and Galifianakis and Ferrell are a comedy duo that is long overdue. Paul Thomas Andersons BOOGIE NIGHTS is a movie that deserves to be seen again on the big screen. There are certain tones, nuances, and yes, characters bathing suit areas in the film that warrant being viewed in a bigger-than-life format. Weve worked with the fine folks at Lagunitas Brewing Company on a special beer dinner showcasing their great portfolio of top-notch beers. Alamo Executive Chef John Bullington has crafted a gourmet food menu that not only accentuates each beers unique style but also Dirk Digglers giant talent. Its time to see Don Cheadle in western wear, Burt Reynolds as a porn director, Heather Graham on roller-skates, and everyone else in amazing steadicam shots from the masterful eye of PT Anderson. Lagunitas hails from California, which happens to be where Marky Marks character finds fame in this risqu flick, but the brewers assure us that there is much less disco, drugs, and sex in the Golden State than the film would have us believe. CONAN features Arnold Schwarzenegger as the very titular Barbarian, seeking revenge against the man who murdered his parents. James Earl Jones plays Thulsa Doom, a cult leader who gives new meaning to the term Jones-town Massacre. Conan is assisted by the finely-chiseled she-warrior Valeria (Sandahl Bergman). The movie is directed by the always-Nietzschean John Milius (RED DAWN). Mocking the film will be regulars John Erler and Joe Parsons, plus guests Mac Blake and David Jara of Mascot Wedding Productions. As he festers in his hotel room, hiding from managers (Bob Hoskins), groupies (NEAR DARKs Jenny Wright) and an estranged wife (Eleanor David), elements of his abusive childhood come back to haunt him until he begins to descend into absolute madness - leading to a climax that is as questionably cathartic as it is destructive. Punctuated by the amazing animation of artist Gerald Scarfe.

And when Willie Nelsons rowdy friends pop in for a few drinks, a few tokes and a few tunes, things start getting pretty lively. Now these arent your standard-issue party animals. Were talking about Waylon Jennings, Wolfman Jack, a visibly drunk Leon Russell, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and many, many more. These good old boys knew as much about partying as Marie Curie knew about radium. Be there!!

Filmed during the duos Revenge Tour in Sydney, Australia, in February of 87. Featuring live renditions of all the pop hits you probably know -- like Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), Here Comes the Rain Again, and Sisters Are Doing It for Themselves -- and a bunch of equally synth-tastic album cuts you probably dont. Never given a proper theatrical release in the U.S. and only released commercially on VHS (now long out out of print, naturally), dont miss your chance to see this 80s retro treat on the big screen with volume turned all the way up.

The American Bowie, The True Fairy of Rock & Roll, Hype of the Year. Known as the first openly gay rock star, Jobriaths reign was brief, lasting less than two years and two albums. Done in by a overhyped publicity machine, shunned by the gay community, and dismissed by most critics as all flash, no substance, Jobriath was excommunicated from the music business and retreated to the Chelsea Hotel -- where he died forgotten in 1983 at the age of 37, one of the earliest casualties of AIDS. However, in the years since his death, new generations of fans have discovered his music through acts as diverse as The Pet Shop Boys, Gary Numan, Joe Elliott of Def Leppard, and Morrissey, all of whom have cited Jobriath as an influence. Through interviews, archival material and animation, experience the heartbreaking, unbelievable story of the one, the only, Jobriath.
DAVE CHAPPELLES BLOCK PARTY Dir. Michel Gondry, 2005, R, 103 min, 35mm RZ 8/13 & 8/20
In late 2004 Dave Chappelle signed a now famous contract with Comedy Central that made him one of the richest men in show business. To celebrate he threw a little block party in Brooklyn. He invited a few of his friends to stop by and play music (Kanye West, The Roots, Eryka Badu, The reunited Fugees, Mos Def and others), and he hired director Michel Gondry (ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND) to document the event, with Chappelle himself providing a very funny running commentary throughout. But thats only part of the film. Its also the story of how Chappelle organized the party and spread the word through the community, mostly by word of mouth but occasionally by resorting to a megaphone. We see Chappelle interacting with a large number of people, from the residents of his home town in Ohio to the members of the Bed Stuy community in Brooklyn where the concert takes place. And not surprisingly, its very, very funny.

SIRONIA was the winner of the Audience Award in the Texas Independents category of the Austin Film Festival. Singer/songwriter Wes Cunningham stars as a man who has been chewed up and spit out by the Hollywood music machine. A once ambitious musician, he impulsively moves with his pregnant wife to a small town called SIRONIA, Texas in search of authenticity and purpose in his life. This poignant film played to two standing-room-only audiences at Austin Film Festival last year, so nows your chance to see what all the fuss is about.

Enter first-year teacher Andrew Norris (Perry King), whos forced to violently turn the tables on the bloodthirsty gang before their trashwave swallows the town alive. Each actor turns in a memorable, convincing performance amid knifings and punk slam pits. The film moves forward relentlessly at full speed, with humor and intelligent dialogue balancing out the horrors perpetrated by the vicious teens. CLASS OF 1984 is tirelessly seedy, overflowing with assault, suicide, racism, drug use and crime crime crime, all of which is perpetrated by minors. The tension of victimization and vengeance create some of the most stirring scenes of violent retribution on record. But beyond all this, theres a bitterly absorbing air of human helplessness and leather-clad heartlessness that makes this movie the flat-out best you will find in your entire miserable life. (Zack)

Terror Tuesday makes an extremely unusual leap into the (bleccchh!) mid-90s to celebrate our great nation this Independence Day. Master exploitationeers William Lustig (VIGILANTE; MANIAC COP) and Larry Cohen (ITS ALIVE; THE STUFF) plumb the depths of supernatural slashery and flag-waving inanity when a not-sorecently deceased Gulf War soldier is reanimated by a general lack of patriotism (!?!) in his hometown. The undead soldier dons a dollar store Uncle Sam suit for his disembowelment-laden crusade against hippies, draft-dodgers and flag-burners. Luckily, Isaac Hayes (!?!) is on hand to challenge this maggot-eaten splinter of the American dream. Lustigs final film in his directorial canon (so far) simultaneously exhibits a deep loathing for our nations idiocy and a harkening back to a simpler life built on family, tradition, and graphic beheadings. Skipping this show is like weeping at Osama Bin Ladens funeral. (Zack)

One week before October 31, a mysterious corporation unveils a series of adorable monster masks that are secretly devised to transform childrens faces into a mass of gore and crawling insects. The one man sworn to stop the massacre is of course none other than Tom Thrill Me Atkins of NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and MANIAC COP. Warning: there are people who hate this brilliant movie. There are also people who enjoy vegan cuisine, listen to Radiohead or think Jack Black is funny. None of those things can be blamed on HALLOWEEN III. So what if this film has nothing to do with the masked maniac that founded the famous series? Now that Rob Zombie has made Michael Meyers about as scary as Austin Powers, join us in enjoying some true HALLOWEEN excitement. Id rather see a million beautifully crippled 80s goonrides like this than watch dreadlocked rockn-roll turd Zombie take another bite out of horrors corpse. (Zack)

Larry Cohen (ITS ALIVE; GOD TOLD ME TO) presents the tale of the Quetzalcoatl, an enormous pterodactyl with a ceaseless craving for rooftop tanners and window washers. This creates some unwanted overtime for winded cop David Carradine, who loses his partner to the creatures talons before he can even begin to fathom his new assignment. The only man who knows Qs secret hideout is the less-than-cooperative Jimmy Quinn, an out-of-work pianist played to the jazz-scatting, self-loathing hilt by Michael Moriarty. The body count rises as the hideous insatiable beast eclipses the sun in this South American mythology megablorch that co-stars Richard Shaft Roundtree. Probably based on a true story. (Zack)
CREEPSHOW Dir. George Romero, 1982, R, 120 min, 35mm RZ 7/31

(PART OF OUR SUMMER OF 1982 SERIES!) Tonight is for every single one of you who have dreamed of seeing Leslie Nielsen be attacked by an undead Ted Danson. And the fun doesnt stop there. This timeless 80s collaboration between zombiemeister Romero and money-liker Stephen King is arguably the most beloved horror anthology of the last 50 years, a collision of top notch Hollywood stardom and gutmunching comic book craziness. A tribute to the old EC horror mags, CREEPSHOW genuinely captures everything that parents didnt want their kids to see in those 4-color pages and throws it on the screen with conscience-free abandon. The players are bona fide Hollywood pros, from Oscar nominees like Hal Holbrook (shooting his wife in the forehead) to sympathetic baldy Ed Harris (watching a corpse sing a ditty). With no story longer than 20 minutes, we demand that you come immerse yourself in A.D.D. terror. But note: This show is not recommended to anyone afraid of cockroaches or moss-encrusted hillbillies. Freddy Kreugers directorial debut is every bit the virginal nerds vengeance fantasy youd expect from a man who spent his entire career wearing a striped sweater. FRIGHT NIGHT alumnus Stephen Geoffreys plays Hoax, a simple-minded teen who giggles at nude photos in National Geographic, idolizes his bad-boy cousin, and lives under the thumb of his overbearingly religious mother. Bereft of friends and dignity, Hoax becomes drawn to a supernatural phone service that predicts, alters, and ultimately cancels the future of its callers. In short time, the mysterious service empowers the once-timid teenager with all the forces of darkness, and he begins a rampage of reckoning and powermad violence. Geoffreys does an impressive job in the lead role, masterfully playing both lovable loser and demonic force of absolute retribution. A few years later, this multifaceted young actor would try his luck in a different genre as one of the central performers in LATIN CROTCH ROCKETS and GUYS WHO CRAVE BIG COCKS. (Zack)
WITCHBOARD Dir. Kevin S. Tenney, 1986, R, 98 min, 35mm RZ 8/21

Before the Internet invaded our society and transformed us all into spineless turds, the greatest threat to society was the Ouija board. Fortunately, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS director Tenney was savvy enough to recognize the dark dangers of this occult mantrap, and lensed this cautionary lesson about meddling with the sinister forces of...Parker Brothers board games. TOURIST TRAP and BEASTMASTER star Tanya Roberts is just one of the fresh-faced youths enticed by the pull of the unknown, as the seemingly innocent game opens a doorway to possession, poltergeists, and pre-marital canoodling. For a horror film based on a product that can be purchased at any Toys R Us, WITCHBOARD manages to build a whole bunch of genuine tension and legitimate jolts, but is now largely remembered due to its gratuitous shower scene. Blame the goddamn Internet for that one. (Zack)
ALLIGATOR Dir. Lewis Teague, 1980, R, 91 min, 35mm RZ 8/14

If youre going to destroy a 40-foot man-eating alligator, you need the right selfloathing, balding, middle-aged man for the job. Thank god for Robert Forster, a perpetually frowning cop willing to take on whatever sewer-dwelling threat is thrown at him. And this ones a real doozy: a carnivorous, scientifically-modified beast that bursts through the sidewalk to devour everything from dogs to children to actual human beings. At his side and in his way are two of the finest actors to ever ugly up a screen: Henry Stoneface Silva and sandpaper-throated wildman Michael Gazzo as the chrome-domed goombah who hypocritically mocks Forsters modest hair loss. A brilliant animal holocaust, penned by future auteur John Sayles when he still knew how to party, ALLIGATOR makes all other mutant sewer reptiles look like pathetic sissies. Turtle power, my ass. LADY TERMINATOR Dir. Jalil Jackson, 1989, R, 82 min, 35mm RZ 8/28

White people have been too stupid to notice, but the nations of the South Pacific have provided the world with some of its most neck-snapping cinema. These movies have a unique ability to forego logic and feasibility in a relentless drive to distill maximum entertainment, and in no film has this impressive approach triumphed more totally than in Lady Terminator. Its a tale as old as time: After a man steals a snake from a sex witchs vagina, she threatens to exact revenge on his great-great-granddaughter. One hundred years later, a scuba-diving female anthropologist is violated by the same morally corrupt snake, causing her to unleash a wave of shirtless laser-eyed homicide. Her target: a certain great-greatgranddaughter, whos also an up-and-coming Benatar-esque Indonesian rock star. But the primary targets are male crotches, which are mangled, eaten, riddled with bullets and worse. Would you believe this vicious she-demon even pauses to give a gunned-down corpse a kick in the dingle? What a totally cruel supernatural tramp!! (Zack)

It sounds great, right? But can it possibly deliver? Can it be as good as it sounds? Yes it can - and its even better. Devane, Jones and Linda Haynes, as the roadhouse waitress and beauty queen whos just as dead inside as the major, all give superlative performances under the powerful direction of the late, underrated John Flynn. If you want an orgy of revenge and violence, this is your movie, but youre going to feel it in your soul afterwards. Written by Paul Schrader and Heywood Gould. (Lars)

One of the finest movies ever made about a Nazi fugitive who develops a serum called ZAAT, uses it to transform himself into a walking catfish and goes on a rampage in North Florida. ZAAT!, also known as BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z, is a prime example of what I call Planet Florida. What passes for logic and reason in the other 49 states is still viewed with suspicion in Florida. Dont knock it. This no-rules approach to movie-making has given us some of the finest and most entertaining drive-in movies ever and, while ZAAT! may lack the professional flair of its bigger budget counterparts, it gives us a window into a world beyond our own, with its own, somewhat obscure viewpoint. After you see ZAAT!, you will believe in the power of rubber monster suits. We will be joined by Don Barton, maker of ZAAT! who will tell us all about the making of this 40-year-old microbudgeted swampland gem. Dont miss it. Those Italians really have a way with sexy horror films. This is a very creepy, stylish movie that has a way of sticking with you after its over. Like a haunting melody. Or herpes. Spaghetti Western star Anthony Steffen is unbelievably depraved as an insane murderer who trolls the nightclubs of swinging London looking for sweet young things to tie up and whip in his fully equipped gothic torture chamber, complete with manacles and chains. Hes having a wild time for a while but he foolishly seals his own fate when he tangles with redheaded night club headliner/ avenging ghost woman Erika Blanc, whose act consists of her emerging ass-first from a coffin onstage and gyrating wildly to fuzz guitar music. A very special treat for fans of Euro sex and horror films. Music by the great Bruno Nicolai. (Lars)
SHARK! Dir. Sam Fuller, 1969, NR, 92 min, 35mm RZ 7/25

SHARK! is so manly youll grow an extra testicle just to keep up. Ladies be advised. Burt Reynolds (of Burt Reynolds fame) stars as a fugitive gun-runner in North Africa who gets involved in a plot to recover sunken treasure in the shark-infested waters of the Mediterranean. Is that macho enough for you? If not, then we cant help you. Burt sweats, fights, runs from the cops, sweats some more, wrestles sharks and gets the girl, kind of. The whole thing was written and directed by the great Sam Fuller, a Hollywood maverick whose determination to do things his own way led to a virtual blacklist in America. Most of his films are taught in film schools now but in 1970 he was flat on his ass, turning out movies that would have been routine action fare in lesser hands but were transfigured by his phenomenal talent and skill. One of the crowning achievements of man-pulp cinema. (Lars)

OVER THE EDGE Dir. Jonathan Kaplan, 1979, PG, 95 min, 35mm RZ 8/1
Dont dare miss this amazing, astonishing masterpiece of youth revolt cinema. Its set in an abominably sterile planned community where the streets are clean and every home is perfect. When the young people begin to rebel, its suppressed like an insurrection by subversives. Not surprisingly, it all boils over spectacularly. If this film were handled with less skill, it would not have nearly the impact it has, but director Jonathan Kaplan (TRUCK TURNER) has a fantastic eye and ear for the way young people talk, for the way they express themselves powerfully in ways that the kind of planned adults who ensconce themselves in planned neighborhoods could never hear. Because the setting is so deftly sketched, the explosion of violence in this movie is hugely cathartic, dark and satisfying. Since punk rock seems to have barely glanced the surface of New Grenada, all the kids get in trouble to the sounds of Cheap Trick and Van Halen. One of the best films of the 70s and a true classic. Soul group The Isley Brothers produced this cheap but visually inventive psychedelic mindfuck. When a psychiatrist in an unhappy marriage lucks into a visit from a heartless psychotic killer, he uses posthypnotic suggestion to screw up the poor murderers mind even more so hell kill the doctors wife. Thats all fine, but where the movie really succeeds is in its insane dream sequences, in which the psychopath fights his way through violently dancing armies of go-go girls in bizarre face paint while funky break-beat organ music plays furiously on the soundtrack. Its pure ghetto surrealism and its like no other movie Ive ever seen. Spectacularly rare 35mm print. Dont expect to ever see this in a theater again. (Lars)
NIGHT OF THE COBRA WOMAN Dir. Andrew Meyer, 1972, R, 85 min, 35mm 8/15
This superlatively dumb made-in-the-Philippines snake-woman movie will leave you with your mouth hanging open. Its pretty special. The plot is fairly routine - a young herpetologist and her boyfriend encounter a beautiful half-snake/halfwoman who needs sex to stay young. She enslaves the boyfriend and the scientist must battle for her man. But the execution of the film is beyond strange. The actor who plays the young man caught in the snake womans trap gives the worst perfomance Ive ever seen in a movie, a TV show, a school play - ANYWHERE. Its infinitely engrossing. The rest of the movie is not bad either, with lots of strange thrills and jungle excitement. Starring the gorgeous black American actress Marlene Clark as the Cobra Woman. You need to see this one. PETS Dir. Raphael Nussbaum, 1974, R, 97 min, 35mm RZ 8/22

With the state of movies today, its not surprising that many Americans are sleaze deficient to an alarming degree. We are working around the clock to remedy that. Regular Weird Wednesday patrons show a baseline sleaze deprivation index of zero. But if any of you out there need a make up some ground with a supercharged speedball of sleaze to ensure that you are protected for the next six months or so, we prescribe this utterly unsavory masterpiece of arty depravity. Its Sades Justine plot again with luscious Candice Rialson, who looks exactly like Malibu Barbie, finding herself in some seriously kinky and compromising situations. Rialson is great but top acting honors have to go to Ed Bishop, of the cult TV show UFO, who plays a collector of beautiful things. He has a couple of long ranting, ludicrously sexist speeches that are worth the price of admission alone. (Lars)

Few films should ever be called revolutionary but MAN WITH A MOVIE CAMERA is just that. Director Dziga Vertov had every intention on making this a film like no other, both technically and narratively. In fact he had no story in mind when he was shooting all over the Soviet Union, making it almost impossible to edit a cohesive film from his beautiful takes. The overall product, however, is anything but muddled and incoherent. It is a visual essay on the emerging ideology of machine over man in the Soviet Union and also a document on the filmmaking process. Vertov also employs many technical achievements into his groundbreaking effort. This truly original, revolutionary, and important film is not one that cinephiles and historians should miss. And to make the experience even greater there will be a live score by Austin musician Justin Sherburn and six-piece group Montopolis to accompany the film.

Big Screen Classics: MANHATTAN Dir. Woody Allen, 1979, R, 96 min SR 7/9-7/12
Woody Allen hated MANHATTAN when he first saw his finished film. He begged United Artists not to release it. Its a good thing they didnt listen because it just might be the best film the 50-plus year film veteran ever made. Filmed in beautiful black and white and filled with the unforgettable music of George Gershwin, Allens film plays, as one would expect, as a love letter to the vibrant city he used to call home. A lot was expected out of Allen after critics and audiences fell head over heels for ANNIE HALL just two years prior and most would argue, Allen excluded, that he didnt disappoint. Allen, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, and Mariel Hemingway make up the films impressive acting ensemble that delivers great performances across the board. And cinematographer Gordon Willis shoots New York so assuredly the city becomes a lively character in itself. Together they make MANHATTAN Allens most accomplished effort as writer, director, and actor.

Beaumont sur Mer is a tranquil little town along the French Mediterranean coast where Michael Caines con-man Lawrence preys on the kindness of women to afford himself quite the elaborate lifestyle. That is until small-time grifter Freddie (Steve Martin) rolls through the place and forces Lawrence to share the secrets of his high-class ways. What follows is an out-con the con back and forth thats both intelligent and absolutely idiotic at the same time. This is vintage Steve Martin at his best, swinging from one-liners to pratfalls at the drop of a hat (ZING!), and Michael Caine is like a white, British Will Smith for me. Id watch this man act in pretty much anything because he goes down like a warm, comforting glass of milk before bedtime. But we cant just exhibit this magnificent 35mm print...NO! We must partake in absolute decadence, and thats where Alamo Beverage Director Bill Norris comes in. He will be designing custom cocktails for the show themed with the movie. Try one and have a good time, or bask in the opulent glory of them all! Put your livers in the hands of Bill Norris--this is a man who has mixed things I hate into concoctions I still dream of. How do you celebrate your independence? Sure, war movies can be patriotic fun and Independence Day has that rousing Bill Pullman speech, but nothing tops a cocksure-as-ever Bruce Willis as a retired elite commando being pulled out of retirement to defend the Earth from ABSOLUTE EVIL. Tiny Lister plays the hugest black president ever (long before being a black president was cool), and Gary Oldman goes for broke in one of his wackiest performances ever. ANDif thats not enough, you got Chris Tucker in a rare non-Rush Hour role. Oh...and Milla Jovovichs boobs. Despite the development of CGI whiz bangery, Luc Besson crafted many of his costumes and effects practically and detonated the LARGEST EXPLOSION ever filmed at the time. And, if the month of July is about nothing else, its about blowing shit up and firing some guns in the name of freedom. So, come on! Theres a ball of fire, its 1200 miles in diameter headin straight for Earth, and only YOU can stop it. BANGARANG! Award-winning filmmaker Mark Cousins created this massive odyssey through film history for Britains Channel 4 last year. It is the most comprehensive attempt ever undertaken to tell the whole story of film, its origin, meanings and relevance to the rest of our lives. The series features many hours of judiciously selected and arranged clips, as well as newly shot revealing interviews with such luminaries as the Coen Brothers, Martin Scorsese, Baz Luhrman, Abbas Kiarostami, Lars Von Trier, Bernardo Bertolucci, Claire Denis and many, many others. At each installment of Cinema Club we are joined by a guest from the world of film - often a writer, academic or filmmaker - who provides a helpful introduction to a classic movie and then joins us in a wide-ranging group discussion about the film itself, its context, history, and meaning. This time were honored to welcome filmmaker and instructor Kat Candler to our stage to introduce us to Richard Brooks stunning adaptation of Truman Capotes true novel about murder in a small midwestern town. Robert Blake and Scott Wilson give excellent performances as the dumb, brutal murderers and the still underrated writer/director Richard Brooks does an excellent job of setting the story and pace, but its the widescreen black and white camera work of Conrad Hall that makes any theatrical screening of this absolutely unmissable. Subtle its not, but it is undeniably gorgeous, and it reminds us that in film, the pictures are the story. Featuring a score by Quincy Jones and the rock solid editing of Peter Zinner. A pure, essential treasure of American film. (Lars)

Just in time for the scantily- clad summer season, VIDEO HATE SQUAD finally takes an excursion into the made-for-TV realm with this vintage slice of Americas 1980s romance with stranger-danger. Mixing elements of THE BAD NEWS BEARS with Paul Schraders HARDCORE, the movie is exceptionally creepy despite being tame enough to meet the restrictions of its format. The late Dana Hill stars as Jennifer Philips, a young girl on the threshold of burgeoning womanhood who has recently lost her father. Meanwhile, porn talent scout/girls softball coach Howard Nichols (Richard Masur) is under the gun to replace one of their stars whos falling apart at the seams. Soon enough, Jennifer is starring in Coach Howies orange-Crush&-quaalude-fueled woodland naughty photo shoots. Masur, as the manipulative coach, is both seedy and sweet, but is never over the top despite the fact that his lines are a rich lunch of double entendres. Ronny Cox and Melinda Dillon round out this disturbing laugh riot! (Max)

THE COLOR WHEEL is the story of two obnoxious people: JR, an aspiring newsanchor, and her brother, Colin. They, and the rest of the world, cant stand each other. Now theyre stuck together on a road trip to move JRs belongings from her ex-lovers apartment. Directed and co-written by Alex Ross Perry, who worked at the legendary video store Kims Video while attending NYU film school and has said that he learned more from the former than the latter. In fact many of his collaborators on THE COLOR WHEEL he met during his time at Kims. And his many influences, both in the classroom and on store shelves, are present in this completely original film that The New York Times called unpleasant: full of obnoxious characters, but also sly, daring, and at times perversely brilliant.
POSSESSION Dir. Andrzej Zulawski, 1981, R, 127 min, 35mm RZ 8/5, 8/6, 8/8
Not since HAUSU has a restored underground classic taken the world of cinephiles by storm like POSSESSION. This has long been a favorite of ours, even though it has only been available on video bootlegs and badly cut 35mm prints. Now that a new print is making the rounds, thousands more people are having their brain reshaped by its intense, gory, psychosexual brilliance. Ostensibly a film about a break-up, director Andrzej Zulawski takes an overkill approach to pure cinema. Volumes could (and should) be written about the technical brilliance of the camerawork and sound - all of which shows the astonishing assurance of the greatest masters of the art, but the area where POSSESSION really takes flight is the performances. Sam Neill and especially Isabelle Adjani leave it all on the set. This is not like any other movie youve ever seen before. Its better. Featuring a bizarre and unfathomably awesome music score by Andrzej Korzynski. Creature effects by Carlo Rambaldi. If you have to choose between the birth of your first child and this film, choose this film. Highest possible recommendation. (Lars)

We kick off the series with a package of shorts featuring legendary later work by the wizard of the silent screen Georges Melies; a rare restoration of a Western made by his brother Gaston Melies at their Star Film Ranch in San Antonio, Texas; a 1930s adventure documentary on African Pygmies that inspired Werner Herzog to become a filmmaker; a chapter of the original Flash Gordon serial; and a cosmically psychedelic experimental work. Zzang!!!: FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH Dir. Amy Heckerling, 1982, R, 90 min, 35mm RZ 8/12
(PART OF OUR SUMMER OF 1982 CELEBRATION!) Besides the whole education part, going to high school in the 80s was the greatest experience in the universe. The halls were packed with countless entertaining stereotypes: preppies, jocks, surfer dud(e)s and mall-crawling new wavers of all types. Very little of this golden era was accurately documented, with the glowing exception of FAST TIMES. Written by a 24-year-old Cameron Crowe, this rampaging chronicle of post-adolescent triumph, agony and hilarity is right on the money while outrageously funny. Whoops. That rhymed. Anyway, come be transported on a 35mm adventure to the days when music raged, teens were uncaged, and Sean Penn hadnt gotten ruined by all that silly dignity crap. Ah, the loveable drunk, hed be so easy to hate for being soooo drunk all the time, if he just wasnt so charming and affable. Arthur is such a drunk. He has no pretensions or ambitions and willfully drinks his days away until he inherits his familys fortune by marrying who they want for him. But then Arthur stumbles (get it!) upon Linda and falls (seriously this is good stuff here) head over heels for her. Some might think its an odd choice to pair this Dudley Moore classic with our Cinema Cocktails series. YES, Arthur is a raging alcoholic. YES, his drinking is wildly self-destructive. YES, Alamo Beverage Director Bill Norris will be providing a cocktail menu EXCLUSIVELY for this film. So frankly, we dont care if you have a problem with us drinking while watching a movie about a drunk...Im still doing it cause its going to be fun. (Greg MacLennan)

Gerhard Richter has been called one of the greatest painters alive by many experts. His works, spanning over 50 years, have been hailed for their diversity and originality. In 2007, after a 15-year absence from being filmed, Gerhard let filmmaker Corinna Belz make a short about him called Gerhard Richters Window. Her feature follow-up is an enthralling combination of various material including interviews with Richters critics and fans and archival footage against the backdrop of documenting Richter during his creative process, and the immense physical labor that comes with his artistic endeavors. The result is a film that examines the art of the man while simultaneously becoming an entirely different work of art about the joy, frustration, and pain that comes with such an intense artistic process.
AGFA Deep Tracks: TOUGH GUYS DONT DANCE Dir. Norman Mailer, 1987, R, 110 min, 35mm RZ 8/19
At every installment of the AGFA Deep Tracks series, we invite you to view a film from the depths of the American Genre Film Archive vault, with the proceeds benefiting the Archive. This is a really odd one. Brilliant novelist (and alwaysinteresting experimental filmmaker Norman Mailer) attempted to make a commercial film for the very first time with this adaptation of his own existential crime novel. Its not exactly a noir masterpiece, but it is a wildly imaginative and bold crime movie full of bizarre twists and turns and some involving performances. Ryan ONeal has gained notoriety on YouTube for his Oh God. Oh Man. Oh God. Oh Man monologue, but the whole film is a string of perverse, often grating, or put of place scenes as it tells the story of a man who emerges from a lengthy bender and tries to patch together what happened and where he got that new tattoo and those severed heads. With Wings Hauser, Lawrence Tierney, Isabella Rosselini and Penn Jillette as a kinky man of the cloth. Not like any other movie. (Lars)

Weve been hunting for a way to present classic soul cinema in a format that shows as much respect to the form as we feel it deserves. The classic blaxploitation era was an explosion of talent and entertainment like few weve ever seen. FRIDAY FOSTER brings together an all-star cast of great African American stars, led by Pam Grier (who has never looked more beautiful) as globetrotting photographer Friday Foster. When she witnesses an assassination attempt against the richest black man in America, she gets involved in a web on intrigue and sepia glamor. With Yaphet Kotto as her dashing boyfriend, Eartha Kitt, Scatman Crothers, Godfrey Cambridge, Carl Weathers and many others. Fast-paced, loose-jointed, and hilarious - FRIDAY FOSTER is an unsung classic of soul cinema. (Lars)
Big Screen Sci-Fi Classics LOGANS RUN Dir. Michael Anderson, 1976, PG, 119 min, digital VL 8/20 - 8/23
Sure, some of the elements of LOGANS RUN are laughably cheesy, like say those costumes and shopping-mall-of-the-future scenery (much of which was actually shot in Texas, so lets not laugh too hard, eh), but this slice of dystopian 70s scifi is still thought-provoking and massively entertaining. Set in a gleaming distant future where humanity has taken refuge in domed cities living lives of infinite leisure, but no one is allowed to live past age 30. The titular Logan (Michael York) is a sandman, whose job is to enforce this rule. That is until is until hes looking down the barrel of the big 3-oh and takes off on his titular run with the beautiful Jessica (Jenny Agutter) -- then the real fun begins. LOGANS has inspired many imitators (ahem, IN TIME, were looking at you) and a long rumored re-make may finally come to pass. ugh. Anyway, nows your chance to see this genre classic back on the big screen in a gorgeous new digital presentation that does its pioneering visuals and score sufficient justice.
Bangarang!: IF LOOKS COULD KILL Dir. William Dear, 1991, PG-13, 88 min, 35mm RZ 8/22
Augustus Steranko is set on world domination and only one man can stop him. Sadly, the best man for the job, agent Michael Corben, has been disposed. But where one Corben failed to make a flight to France, another succeeds. You see, high school lackey Michael Corben (no relation) failed to graduate and has to make the French Club trip to France in order to gain credits. But in a wacky case of mistaken identities, high schooler Michael Corben finds himself having the adventure of someone elses life as both the good and the bad guys take him to be the American super agent they were waiting for. Tricked out by the British Secret Service, Michael Corben has a sports car, expense account, enough gadgets to make James Bond blush and high tops that can walk on walls! IF LOOKS COULD KILL became the ultimate viewing experience for the 90s angst-ridden teen. Richard Grieco was my medium for the hope of a new life involving sports cars, loose women, and machine gun fire. (Greg MacLennan)
Asian Invasion: THE LEGEND OF FONG SAI YUK Dir. Corey Yuen, 1993, R, 100 min, 35mm RZ 8/26
A prime example of the new Hong Kong cinema taking on old themes and making a fresh, vibrant synthesis of styles. Jet Li is at his most impressive as the martial arts master of the title. When he falls in love with a beautiful woman, he inherits her familys considerable problems. Soon a web of intrigue is woven. Whats really important here is the fights. Wire work, or the use of high tensile lines and harnesses to achieve superhuman movements, became a tarnished concept in the mid-90s after so many directors used it mindlessly and without finesse. In FONG SAI YUK, wire work is its own art form. Even though you know how its done, and can (sometimes) see the wires, it is pure magic the way these acrobats fly through the air under the direction of the masterful Corey Yuen. The story is full of playful gender reversals and one of the best female characters in the history of martial arts cinema, Josephine Siao, as Jet Lis hilarious and lethal mom. If you dont fall immediately in love with her you are less than human. (Lars)
Video Hate Squad: HELL RIDERS Dir. James Bryan, 1984, NR, 90 min, VHS! RZ 8/26
Biker movies had reached the end of the road by the early 70s but fortunately not everybody got the message. This direct-to-VHS crotch rocket brings together Nick-At-Night refugees Adam West and Tina Louise and pits them against one of the mangiest looking biker gangs ever assembled. The dialogue is overheated, the bikes are underpowered and Adam (Batman) West gives the subtlest performance in the movie, if that tells you anything. You get lots of the nature-documentary style footage of bikers in their element that you expect from biker movies, along with some pretty fantastic dialogue. Best of all, the soundtrack attempts to synthesize Steppenwolf-style biker rock with New Wave music. It really works! HELL RIDERS RIDE! (Lars)

From dark catacombs to great victories, Brisby, friendly rat Justin and all the other fantastic characters find themselves in great danger en route to greater discoveries. Years ahead of later thinking kids movies like BABE, the animals in this film are more intelligent and believable than anything seen in family film before, their society more akin to ANIMAL FARM than DISNEYLAND. But dont think were getting too academic...theres enough action and high adventure here to entertain a trashcan full of chihuahuas!

She also figures out that the power surge has given NO. 5 life and he no longer abides by his military programming. The military want to find and destory NO. 5. As they and the two scientists who designed him (Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens) get closer, Stephanie must figure out a way to hide and save him.

Hitchcock: NOTORIOUS Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1946, NR, 101 min, 35mm RZ 7/2 & 7/4
When people think of the greatest Alfred Hitchcock films they usually go to the usual: PSYCHO, REAR WINDOW, VERTIGO. Over time, though, another one of his films, NOTORIOUS, a post-WWII espionage thriller, finally achieved the recognition it deserved one of the greatest films the celebrated director ever made. Its a mystery why it took so long, this film has everything: Nazi spies, uranium, secrets, lies, and a complicated love triangle. The film centers on the efforts of the U.S. to find, try, and convict ex-Nazis who are hiding out in Brazil. Enter U.S. agent T.R. Delvin (the dashing Cary Grant) who persuades a young woman, Alicia (Ingrid Bergman) to infiltrate the Nazi group, which includes many friends of her German father. Enter in the always great Claude Rains as the main target and what you have is one of the best films to come out of Hollywood during the studio era. Come watch this film, Hitchcocks greatest directorial effort, on 35mm.
Hitchcock: THE WRONG MAN Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1956, NR, 105 min, 35mm RZ 7/23
This is quintessential Hitchcock. After making several films about mistaken identity of some sort (THE 39 STEPS, SABOTEUR, TO CATCH A THIEF) he finally just gives the audience the plot directly in the title. The film, based off of a true story, a rarity for the director, stars Henry Fonda plays a poor musician in New York that bears a resemblance to an armed robber and is wrongly arrested for a crime he didnt commit. A much more straightforward story than most Hitchcock thrillers, THE WRONG MAN uses great lead performances by Fonda and Vera Miles and beautiful black-and-white cinematography from Robert Burks (a Hitchcock regular), instead of Hitchcocks standard array of plot twists, to achieve its power.
Hitchcock: I CONFESS Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1953, NR, 95 min, 35mm RZ 7/9
One of Hitchocks least-regarded films of the 1950s, I CONFESS still remains an incredibly fascinating look at faith and religion in modern society. Then method actor Montgomery Clift, in one of his greatest and most underappreciated performances, plays Father Michael Logan. One night Father Logan hears a confessional from a poor German immigrant who confesses that he has committed the sin of murder. Soon the police ask Logan about the murder, but because of his faith he cannot divulge any sin confessed to him. Things become more convulted as the police begin to suspect Logan of the crime. Incorporated in I CONFESS are the Hitchcock staples of murder and complicated romance (a natural when a Priest is involved, right?), but its the overt religious symbolism and themes that separate this from the directors usual fare. Now you can see this intriguing combination that makes I CONFESS a must for any Hitchcock fan on the big screen in 35mm.
Hitchcock: LIFEBOAT Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1944, NR, 96 min, 35mm RZ 7/16
LIFEBOAT is a simple film with complex ideas. Taking place entirely on, you guessed it, a lifeboat, the story revolves around several American and British civilians, from various social and professional backgrounds, who have survived the bombing of their ship by a German U-boat during WWII. Things start to get interesting as one of the German soldiers swims by the boat and is reluctantly rescued by the group. The first of Hitchcocks many films set in one location, LIFEBOAT utilizes its lone setting by making the claustrophobic boat the catalyst that pit allies against each other as much as their European enemy. The effect of the overall production, from the story written by famous novelist and screenwriter John Steinbeck, to the lack of a musical score to the great performances from all involved, makes you feel a little uneasy, a little uncomfortable, but totally engrossed. Im sure thats exactly how Hitchcock would want it.
Hitchcock: SPELLBOUND Dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 1945, NR, 111 min, 35mm RZ 7/30 & 8/1
SPELLBOUND was one of the very first American films to deal with psychoanalysis, a topic Hitchcock would go back to several times throughout his career. In all honesty, though, the director candidly admitted that the film was just another manhunt wrapped up in pseudo-psychoanalysis. And thats pretty much sums up this story, which revolves around the newly arrived replacement director of a mental hospital Dr. Edwardes (Gregory Peck), who is soon found out to be an impostor by one of the hospitals leading psychologists, Dr. Petersen (Ingrid Bergman). The mystery unravels from here in pure Hitchcock fashion as the impostor has no memory of who he is and what exactly happened to the real Dr. Edwardes. Also featuring a famous dream sequence designed by Salvador Dali, SPELLBOUND is a film that feels just like any other Hitchcock thriller, yet entirely different. See this interesting mix of murder, mystery, love, and psychology on beautiful 35mm.

Whether or not Tommy Wiseau intentionally shot his film as a black comedy, or if he is simply a completely inept filmmaker (and actor) is utterly irrelevant. THE ROOM will stand the test of time as one of the most mind-bendingly awesome offerings to ever drop from the celluloid heavens. Completely financed and distributed by Mr. Wiseau, this divine piece of WTF-ery has built a cult following playing midnight screenings across the country and solidified its place as the CITIZEN KANE of terrible movies. The Guardian described it as a mix of Tennessee Williams, Ed Wood, and R. Kellys Trapped in the Closet. Thats about as apt a description as we could possibly provide.
ROBOT JOX Dir. Stuart Gordon, 1989, PG, 85 min, 35mm 8/24 & 8/25
In a post-World War III world, war has become outlawed and disputes between the super powers are now settled by genetically enhanced super soldiers, known as Robot Jox, who operate skyscraper-sized machines. Stuart Gordons entry into the way-too-short-lived sub genre of robot warrior movies of the early 1990s has all the flash and bang of a young Michael Bay on a shoestring budget. Joe Haldeman, whose sole film credit is this movie, creates verbal poetry with lines like I kill you already... (points to head) in here and You make my drink taste like blood! Audio pearls fly at you fast and furiously as the worlds two biggest super powers, The Market (good) and The Confederation (bad), face off in a battle for Alaska. A film about gigantic robots battling it out in exotic locales cant be bad, and thats why were bringing it to you for some Late Night at The Alamo fun! Gordon tried to make a live action anime, and I dare say he more than succeeds. Throw in an overthe-top Texan named Tex (duh!) who serves as a glorified one man cheerleading squad and a menacingly evil Russian bad guy named Alexander(double duh!) whose robot has a gigantic chainsaw penis, and youve got yourself a party. The Late Show: CHRISTINE Dir. John Carpenter, 1983, R, 110 min, 35mm RZ 7/27, 7/28
John Carpenter is known for making some decent horror flicks, but none of them compare to the combination of scares, humor, and sheer wackiness of CHRISTINE, the directors foray into the killer car horror subgenre. Adapted from Stephen Kings novel, the film follows Christine, a red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury built by the hands of assembly line workers in the Motor City. From the start she was good at two things: lookin pretty and killing. Two decades and hundreds of thousands of miles later she is bought by high school nerd Arnie Cunningham, who restores the now beat up car to her glory days. It isnt long before the Detroit beauty goes back to her killing ways. The best thing about CHRISTINE is Carpenters slick touch as director. He creates a very unsettling mood throughout, but totally understands that, at the end of the day, this is a movie about a serial killing car. The film gives you the usual Carpenter thrills, but its also completely and brilliantly ridiculous. And seeing it with a half-drunk, 100%-committed Alamo crowd will only make it that much better.
The Late Show: CARRIE Dir. Brian De Palma, 1976, R, 98 min, 35mm RZ 8/10 & 8/11
Early Brian De Palma movies were kind of nuts. In fact, when looking back over his whole career, you could say that CARRIE was, at the time, his first venture in making a mainstream movie. Thats right, a film about a high school and social outcast (Sissy Spacek) who, through her psychic powers, spreads terror to those in her presence whenever she boils with rage was a step toward conventional Hollywood filmmaking for De Palma. Thats how crazy his movies were back in the early 70s. Along with the amazing Spacek the film also co-stars a young, featheryhaired John Travolta (in case you forget its set in 1976) and a creepy Piper Laurie (who, with Spacek, was nominated for an Oscar) as Carries famously overbearing mother. It appears that De Palmas move toward normal was a good one as CARRIE remains one of the best and most influential modern American horror films. And now you can see it, from the eerie and unsettling opening to the bloody, iconic finale, on the big screen.

This is a film written and directed by the man who wrote lines I love the smell of napalm in the morning and meant it. Theres no better way to celebrate America than by joining the texted heckle force and enjoying pure American propaganda targeted at children. Join us for a special Hecklevision presentation of RED DAWN where your texted jokes and heckles appear alongside the most face-stompingly powerful tribute to the timeless desire of teenagers to carry out bloody insurrection for the glory of America ever committed to film. We wrapped up our 80s Movie Anthem Sing-Along and felt so bad that we had to leave so much out! As if 80s movies didnt have enough musical gems, the 90s also had some of the BEST MUSIC for movies...ever. Yes there were ballads from Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, and Whitney Houston, but you also had Seals Kiss From a Rose, Smashmouths All Star, and AMAZING SONGS written specifically for the screen by Mr. William Smith and Mr. Robert Kelly. If those dont sound like the absolute perfect ingredients for an Action Pack Sing-Along, then I dont know what else to give you. Well have all the official videos with all the lyrics subtitled on the screen for you (like you dont already know EVERY SINGLE LYRIC to Iris from the City of Angels soundtrack) as well as some videos we just straight up made because stupid people never filmed one. Well also have some tricks up our sleeves and props to hand out so that everyone gets to interact with some of the greatest auditory pleasures ever put on screen. Set in a totalitarian future society, Richards finds himself on the lamb before being apprehended and cast on The Running Man, the TV show of the future wherein convicted felons are provided with a chance at freedom provided they can outrun and outlive their heavily armed and completely badass stalkers. What follows is a non-stop barrage of fisticuffs, machine guns, flamethrowers, opera singing, and THE BEST one-liners ever put to celluloid. Well have Waynes World caps on hand for everyone, as well as Red Vines for you to install in your car. Well even have little paper cups on hand in case you spew. But, dont you dare try to lip sync your way through Bohemian Rhapsody because were going full-on falsetto with a theater full of semi-drunken party-goers as we wail-along to one of the greatest marriages of Queen and cinema (Highlander notwithstanding)! Nowadays, when you think Pop Princess you think Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, or Rihanna... and you wouldnt be wrong. While were still going to have those classic pop princesses represented (I know the 90s dont seem that long ago, right?!), were gonna move closer to todays heroines of pop. But, as were going Gaga over our Beyonces and Katy Perrys, it doesnt mean well forget about our Madonnas, Benatars, and Whitneys. So gussy up like your favorite princess and get down to the Alamo for some aural confections. With the Action Pack as your directors of poppy fun, you no longer have to pretend that you dont know all these lyrics by heart. Meanwhile, the clueless cover guy must also contend with a new rival, a blonde hipster named Hansel (Hes so hot right now). Quoting along to this masterpiece has been one of the highlights of my life, and its the real reason Im glad I went to a school for Kids Who Cant Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too because reading along with these subtitles is better than having the essence of wetness. Any band can play a small room. Hell, you can rock the Cactus Cafe with an acoustic guitar and a set of bongos. But when your band gets booked in a sports stadium? Then you need to be ready to get people alllllll the way in the back amped up, on their feet, and Ready to Rock. The Action Pack hosts an annual power ballad show with Love Bites every February, but in Arena Rock were going to go beyond the songs that force your lighter hand in the air (though well have some of them, too). These are the songs that were written to be sung out at the top of your lungs with 15,000 of your closest friends while sweaty dudes (and a few dudettes) wail on their guitars with explosions, lasers, and fog machines going off all around them. Van Halen, Queen, U2, Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses, Springsteen, AC/DC... for those about to rock, we salute you. For those not about to rock, we recommend you start preparing yourself now. Remember everything you ever loved about Super Mario Brothers? The infectious songs, the matching outfits, Marios unflinching ability to shrug off being in the wrong castle time and time again? Well now I want you to take all of those beautiful, heart-warming memories and I want you to STOMP all over them. Bob Hoskins claimed this was the worst thing hes ever done (And I hear he once murdered a man) and in John Leguizamos autobiography he explains how they both knew it was going to turn out bad so they would frequently get super drunk just to get through the shooting. Apparently the script was being rewritten so many times throughout production that the actors stopped paying attention to the daily handouts, and the directors proved to be so inept that the director of photography ended up getting a directing credit. Yes I said directorS, this movie had THREE directors...it took THREE people to make a pile of shit this big. (Greg MacLennan)

From the opening scene of drunk Billy randomly chasing a penguin around his fathers mansion (Its too damn hot for a penguin to just be walkin around!) through his ultimately triumphant academic decathlon (Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.), BILLY MADISON is simultaneously one of the most ridiculous and one of the most insanely quotable films of all time. Before Adam Sandler mercilessly destroyed the souls of a generation of people too ignorant to avoid JACK AND JILL, he spent his years immediately following SNL filming two masterpieces: HAPPY GILMORE and BILLY MADISON. But while HAPPY is undoubtedly a great film, BILLY MADISON has always been the one that lives in my soul. (Henri Mazza)

Mixtape enthusiasts believe that by carefully selecting and ordering the tracks in a mix, an artistic statement can be created that is greater than the sum of its individual songs. We have A LOT of music videos, and when we create our sing-alongs we play with themes and artists. Sadly, certain songs and artists get left out and we are left to appreciate them alone in our confetti-filled party cave. Well HOARD NO MORE! We are carefully selecting some of our favorite music videos from all of our shows as well as videos weve been keeping to ourselves and then assembling them in such a way to hopefully make you fall in Middle School love with us. Loosely based on the novel by James Fenimore Cooper, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS takes place amidst the violence of the French and Indian War and stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Hawkeye, a brave warrior adopted and raised by the Mohicans. Hes fierce and brutal, but hes also enigmatic and super sexy. He can kill a man with his bare hands, and he can kiss the daylights out of a lady. In other words, Hawkeye is the perfect specimen to launch our new series, Man Crush, because guys want to be him, and girls want to be with him. Its high time we paid tribute to men who can quench our thirst for blood and romance, and theres no better guide for this inaugural screening than Daniel Day-Lewis. Whether you spend the film sighing over his chiseled abs and piercing gaze or cheering when he shoots two guns at the same time, youre guaranteed to enjoy the ride through this breathtaking masterpiece of cinema. Without Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine, in all of her cantankerously awesome glory), how would you discover that its possible to be in a bad mood for 40 years? Jane Austen is pretty much The Goddess of Afternoon Tea, and this July, well worship her over baked goods and cuppas with this radiant adaptation of her novel. Played by the unbelievably luminous Gwyneth Paltrow, Emma is a charming yet infuriating heroine who cant seem to stop meddling in other peoples lives. Then again, if you were surrounded by superstars like the hilarious Toni Collette and the dashing Ewan McGregor, youd probably want to interfere with them too. The stellar cast is most deserving of Austens delightful story, particularly Alan Cumming as the deliciously creepy Mr. Elton and Jeremy Northam as the devastatingly handsome Mr. Knightley. (The man really knows how to rock a high collar.) Brimming with the beautiful English countryside and sumptuous costumes, this film will whisk you away to a glorious place where gloves are required and happy endings are guaranteed. (Sarah Pitre)

In many ways, BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM follows in the grand tradition of 80s John Hughes films. It features a teenage girl, Jess (Parminder Nagra), who doesnt quite fit in, and a dead sexy boy (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who helps her discover and claim her dreams. And, of course, theres the impossibly gorgeous girl (Kiera Knightley) who makes things extra complicated. BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM manages to include all of the necessary ingredients for an authentic and fantastically fun teen movie, but it also adds a distinct flair to the Hughes formula. First of all, theres the whole soccer, I mean, football thing. Even if youre not a sports fan, youll find yourself fist pumping like crazy for Jess as she attempts to live up to her idol, David Beckham, whose hotness inspires us all. And then theres the colorful Indian culture that pervades the entire film and both overwhelms and enriches Jess life (while making me crave Naan like nobodys business). This film is a vibrant study of family expectations and adolescent identity, and it proves that no matter your culture, being a teenager can suck... but it can also be totally awesome. (Sarah Pitre)

When Charlotte Bront wrote JANE EYRE, girlfriend was not messing around. This 19th century masterpiece explores everything from feminism to religion through the eyes of Jane Eyre, a girl who has known great suffering and poverty. Fortunately for her, she also gets to know the tortured Mr. Rochester, and an epic, thrilling romance ensues. Haunting and intense, this novel is perfectly adapted for the screen by the 2011 film starring the deeply talented Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender, who threatens to set every scene on fire with his smoldering. (All Im saying is, maybe the crazy wife shouldnt get all the blame.) Add in Judi Dench and the winsome Jamie Bell, and youve got a stunning display of cinema that wouldve given Charlotte Bront goosebumps. Coltons the kind of charming scoundrel that incites equal levels of exasperation and admiration, and his face gets punched just as much as it gets kissed. Hes cocky and a little bit crazy, and well be celebrating his daredevil masculinity through our new series, Man Crush. Prepare for a night of wild adventures in the Colombian jungle as Colton battles the ruthless Colonel Zolo (Manuel Ojeda), savage crocodiles and, the biggest challenge of them all, the sharp tongue of Joan Wilder (Kathleen Turner). Audiences enjoy offerings not to be found elsewhere in Austin, including the recitation of famous speeches, participatory discussion in a formal, moderated context, and the opportunity to participate in the recreation of Ancient rituals. A typical Dionysium show will feature a lecture, a declamation, a drinking song, a film or live musical performance, an appeal to Dionysus, a fiction-writing contest, and plenty of strong drink. But the heart of every Dionysium is the debate, pitting two experts against each other in toe-to-toe parliamentary combat. Dionysium debate resolutions have covered everything from Social Security reform to the future threat of genocidal robots.

This time out, the Dungeonmaster Of Ceremonies presents the largely underrated Stephen King deep track SILVER BULLET. Its a simple story, really, of a boy and his souped-up hot rod of a wheelchair (Corey Haim back when we was still young, charming, innocent and alive) who lives with his beer-guzzling uncle (Gary Busey, basically playing himself) and finds himself pretty much the only thing between a sleepy lil New England town and a fangalicious lycanthrope. A chillin, thrillin spoonful of 80s monster movie cheese whiz featuring creature effects by the great Carlo Rambaldi (E.T.), SILVER BULLET is essential viewing for all self-respecting fans of 80s movies, Stephen King, and werewolves -- and for non-self-respecting people looking to enter a domestic partnership with Gary Busey.

Following a rumor, she joins forces with feeblish wizard Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and wayward barmaid Molly (Tammy Grimes) to look for the mystical Red Bull, a creature known to hunt and imprison unicorns. In order to walk unnoticed among men, Schmendrick magically transforms Amalthea into a beautiful woman. Together the three embark on an adventurous journey into the dark land of King Haggard, the man rumored to control the Red Bull. Based on Peter Beagles novel of the same name, this animated epic is a bright, colorful tale about love and loss which also features the vocal talents of Jeff Bridges, Christopher Lee and Angela Lansbury. Complete with an over-the-top soundtrack by the classic-rock band America, THE LAST UNICORN is perhaps the high point of directors Rankin & Bass film career.

Mexico and Argentina became the dominant powerhouses of the Spanish-language film industries in Latin America in the 1940s, with each having a Golden Age of quality films right on into the 1950s. In the 1960s Cuba provided an alternative voice of revolutionary content and style in cinema, which began to influence young filmmakers in other countries of the Western Hemisphere. Repulsed by the infamous Massacre of Tlatelolco in 1968, young Mexican filmmakers, such as Jaime Humberto Hermosillo, Arturo Ripstein, Felipe Cazals, and others, began their own cinematic revolution in story-telling styles and exploration of controversial themes. With the rise of digital technology and greater artistic freedom in the 21st century, the Latin American cinema has once more exploded with new talents in practically every country of the hemisphere. We will be showing some films which have played during Austins Cine Las Americas Film Festival, some which have not been seen here for a while, and some brand new films never seen in Austin. Nearly 40 years after the production of SOY CUBA, a Cuban filmmaker brings us a new portrait of his beloved city, Havana. Focusing on ten people, Fernando Prez creates a rich mosaic composed of bits and pieces of their lives in the course of only one day, from sunrise until late at night. His portraits of these people, nearly all of whom are economically poor, make us feel that we know them or would like to. These are no talking heads telling us about their lives. Their expressive faces and bodies in motion reveal even more than words might.

The Minas Gerais region of Brazil depicted in Sandra Koguts beautifully realized film (almost documentary in its style) is a place of much labor for little in return. Thiago and his older brother Felipe share a bedroom and spend every night exploring the meaning of things they have seen and conversations (or arguments) they have overheard. Their father is constantly angry or sullen because of his large family and his difficult labors. However, Thiagos paternal uncle is a good friend to the boy and tries to protect him against the fathers outbursts. His attempt to be a surrogate father is unfortunately suspicious and may reflect his love for his sister-in-law. The paternal grandmother fears a fraternal confrontation and makes her younger son leave the household. Other abandonments make Thiago feel very much alone, but he tries to go on confronting life with his cheerful disposition. When a stranger arrives in the area, Thiagos life may dramatically change.
LAS MALAS INTENCIONES (Bad Intentions) Dir. Rosario Garca-Montero, 2011, 110 min, NR, digital, Spanish with English subtitles SL 7/24
Cayetana, a young girl with a mind of her own, is well aware of the guerrilla war racking her country, but in 1982 she is more concerned with the impending birth of a new baby brother. The girl lives in the very lap of luxury but this threat to her exclusive station as the only child is upsetting her equilibrium. Her mother is addicted to downers and is married to a new husband, who has brought the upsetting pregnancy into Cayetanas world. Blessed (or cursed) with a vivid, often morbid imagination, the young girl treats the household staff abominably and creates vivid lies which hurt others. She even begins to think that upon the birth of the new baby, she herself will die. LAS MALAS INTENCIONES won both the Jury and Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at Cine Las Americas 2012 and has won (or been nominated for) awards in other international festivals. ANNE BRADEN: SOUTHERN PATRIOT Dir. Anne Lewis and Mimi Pickering, 2012, NR Q&A with co-director Anne Lewis in theatre following the screening SL 7/18
For six decades Anne Braden (1924-2006) fought for civil rights in America. Born into a white middle-class family in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Alabama, Anne McCarty began questioning the racial status quo while attending a womens college in Virginia. Her work on newspapers in Alabama and Kentucky provided even more disturbing stories of the effects of racism and segregation. Her marriage to news reporter Carl Braden, a left-wing supporter of unions, further liberalized her views. The 1950s brought ample opportunities to demonstrate support of African American integration into mainstream American society. Braden led or participated in hospital desegregation demonstrations and protests against executions of prisoners. In 1954 the Bradens bought a house on behalf of an AfricanAmerican couple in suburban Louisville, which led to cries of Communists! and a trial for Sedition! McCarthy-ite hysteria ruled the day. No longer employable in Louisville, the Bradens became field organizers soliciting white members for the budding civil rights movement. As reporters Anne and her husband created numerous pamphlets, flyers, and magazine articles promoting various civil rights campaigns. In 1958 Anne Bradens book The Wall Between was published and brought praise from Martin Luther King, Jr. and Eleanor Roosevelt. Through the 1960s and 70s Anne Braden remained committed to the struggle to bring about greater racial equality in America. In the 1980s she added women, environmental, and anti-nuclear issues to her causes. Anne Braden remained a powerhouse and an inspiration to many young activists right up until her death in 2006.
