NEW POSTER IN THE SERIES CONTEMPORARY ART OF VACCINATION

After the very successful posters showing variations on pictures painted by the famous Spanish cubist Pablo Picasso and the well-known German expressionist Franz Marc, Lohmann Animal Health is proud to present a new poster in the series Contemporary art of vaccination. This time the poster shows a variation on the picture Bridal couple at the Eiffel tower by the surrealist painter Marc Chagall. Copies of this poster are available through customer service at Lohmann Animal Health in Cuxhaven.

DEAR AVIAN PROFESSIONALS,

We would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to all our friends of LAH for the past 10 successful years of Lohmann Animal Health. Founded from the veterinary section of TAD and from LTE, the newly formed Lohmann Animal Health group needed some time to find the focus. Restructuring was required and unnecessary fat had to be converted to more productive uses. After ten years, LAH with its 3 prot centres (Feed Additives, Pharma and Vaccines), is beginning to run like a well oiled machine. With our new vaccine brand, AviPro and the unication of the old TAD, Vineland and MBL product ranges we will now get even stronger in the vaccine business. The capacity for all products has been doubled in the last ten years. And we are already in the planning phase for the next extension. But there is also enough room for improvement. And we have to take this time to grow. We are the Avian Professionals in vaccines and we will be the market leader. This is our target and we must jointly work to reach it. Yours sincerely, Dr Bruno Kaesler

THE LAUNCH OF THE RANGE IS APPROACHING!

In Cuxhaven, due to the variety and specicity of the labels and languages utilised on our products, the name changes from the German-made range of vaccines are being done on a country-by-country and product-by-product basis. Across the Atlantic, the USA operations (or Lohmann Animal Health International, LAHI) are bringing all the range of American-made AviPro products into the light of the market all together. The new labels are being approved and released by USDA at this second semester of 2006, and are already being utilised for the USA market. Live vaccines: the new AviPro range will bring one practical innovation for LAHI, which is the use of bilingual labels (English and Spanish). These labels are for the standard products, those

This step means not only a reduction of the variety of labels, but according to LAHIs President Dave Zacek, who calculates that the change from labelling to ship towards labelling as soon as the serials are cleared by USDA will permit immediate labelling on 60% of LAHIs output. This should allow for easier inventory logistics and a more agile supply (forecast, production planning and faster reactiondelivery!). The official launch of the USA range of AviPro vaccines is expected for the International Poultry Exposition in Atlanta, January 2007, when Lohmann will be presenting itself with the new image on our booth.

GHEN CORPORATIONLAH JAPAN DISTRIBUTION AGENT

Much like Japan itself, Ghen Corporation has an impressive history steeped in tradition while embracing modernisation. The word Ghen itself means origin, as in Genesis, which makes it appropriate, as Ghen has been part of the genesis of modern layer genetics and poultry management in Japan. Ghens entrance into poultry breeding began with the founding of its original Hy-Deo Company in 1963 to import layer breeding parent stock. To date, Lohmann Companies have been associated with Ghen for over 40 years and such wellestablished relationships lead to success in the Japanese market. Today, Ghen has grown into 4 divisions the Hy-Deo Group (Breeding Division), a Seed Group, an Antibody Group and the Bio Group (Biologics Division), which has a facility in Tochigi city where it produces, develops and evaluates vaccines. ND C131NEW VACCINE AGAINST NEWCASTLE DISEASE

Newcastle Disease (ND) is one of the most devastating poultry diseases worldwide, caused by an avian paramyxovirus type 1 (APMV-1). It is of particular economic importance in chickens and turkeys of all ages. Clinical signs of the disease may vary from few or no symptoms to respiratory infections, diarrhoea, nervous symptoms and high mortality. Lohmann Animal Health now presents a new vaccine to prevent this disease. AviPro ND C131a, live vaccine for active immunisation against Newcastle Disease, containing a cloned lentogenic LaSota strain. Using the technique of cloning guarantees that all derivates are identical, meaning they have the same characteristics as the original. This can enable the production of vaccines that are more stable and predictable regarding both production process and performance. AviPro ND C131 can be applied via drinking water, spray or eye drop. The vaccine can be used from the second week of age. After one vaccination, immunity will develop within 7 days and will protect the young bird over a period of at least 6 weeks against clinical disease and mortality caused by infection with ND virus. Revaccinations of commercial layers during production are possible. The vaccine proved to be efficacious when incorporated into a schedule with live Hitchner B1 vaccines as well as a primer to subsequent booster vaccinations with inactivated ND vaccines (Fig. 1). Cloning techniques: The principle of cloning is to produce identical copies of one original organism. In the case of viruses, cloning can lead to a homogenous and consistent population of virus. This can be done by plaque picking, plaque purification or end point dilution. But not every cloned virus population is qualified for being a candidate for a vaccine. Clones may be superior, comparable or even inferior compared to the parent strain. That is why each cloned virus population needs to be carefully analysed and selected for aspects such as pathogenicity, immunogenicity and safety before it is chosen to be a vaccine virus.

SALMONELLA VAC E INTRODUCED TO VENEZUELAN POULTRY PROFESSIONALS

Organised by Lohmanns Brazilian office together with the Venezuelan distributor Binveca, the launch of AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E in Venezuela took place on the 13th of June in Maracay city. The response to the invitation to this event was enormous, more than 100 veterinarians and integrators attended the meeting, where Dr Liliana Revolledo, a specialist on salmonella, held a lecture about intestinal immunology and Dr Beatriz Cardoso from Lohmanns Brazilian office presented the features and the use of this star product from LAH to the intrigued audience. AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E is a live attenuated vaccine for poultry against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Gallinarum* infections. The attenuated vaccine strain Sm24/Rif12/Ssq is designed to be sufficiently invasive to induce immunity in the bird but at the same time is made safe and sensitive to stress, resulting in very short duration of shedding from the birds, with no survival in the environment. By being administered orally, through drinking water, AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E imitates the natural route that a salmonella infection would take. Most important, oral vaccination induces immediate production of secretory IgA. This immunoglobulin will protect the gut lumen against infections of a field challenge of Salmonella Enteritidis or Salmonella Gallinarum*, this preventing invasion of other organs. To close the day all participants watched the football match Brazil versus Croatia and had the possibility to win an official ball from the World Cup, 3 small footballs and one jersey from the Brazilian or the Argentinian football team. * Official claim not yet valid in all countries

PROTECTION OF SALMONELLA VAC E AGAINST SALMONELLA GALLINARUM

A recent publication of AVIAN DISEASES (50: 280283, 2006) demonstrated the cross-protection of AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E against challenges of Salmonella Gallinarum. The research note is called Protection Conferred by a Live Salmonella Enteritidis Vaccine Against Fowl Typhoid in Laying Hens by Pablo Chacana and Dr Horacio Terzolo, both from the Instituto Nacional de Tecnologa Agropecuaria, (INTA) in Balcarce, Argentina. Terzolo and Chacana vaccinated laying hens with the three-dose vaccination programme recommended by Lohmann, starting on the first day of life (the publication refers to TAD Salmonella vac E, the former name of AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E). The hens were challenged in production with a Salmonella Gallinarum strain (INTA 91, 2 x 105 CFU). Mortality, fecal shedding and organ invasion of Salmonella Gallinarum were assessed. In non-vaccinated birds, mortality after challenge at 28 weeks of age reached a level of 94 %. Diseased hens manifested anorexia, somnolence and depression, presenting enlarged and congested livers and spleens. Birds vaccinated with the three oral doses programme only presented 6% mortality. As far as organ invasion of the challenge strain is concerned, septicaemia was a constant feature in every dead hen, and a complete correspondence between mortality and organ invasion was found. Vaccinated hens presented significant reduction of organ invasion and shedding. The study concluded overall that vaccination with a three-dose programme of AviPro SALMONELLA VAC E protects chickens against mortality and organ colonisation and reduces fecal shedding excretion rate, hence diminishing the spread of Salmonella Gallinarum in the environment. Moreover, the study suggests that in countries where Fowl Typhoid has not been eradicated, control programmes should not only rely on the control of vertical transmission of salmonella in breeder flocks, but also on vaccination of laying hens using safe, attenuated salmonella strains.
