FACULTY OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MARA 40450 SHAH ALAM

COURSE NAME : DRILLING ENGINEERING COURSE CODE : CGE576 LECTURER : ARINA BINTI SAUKI (CHEMISTRY LAB LEVEL 6) GIVEN DATE : 30th MAY 2012 DUE DATE : (MONDAY:11TH JUNE 2012 by 5.00 pm) - REPORT PRESENTATION DATE: WEEKS AFTER MID-SEMESTER BREAK

ASSIGNMENT 2 In a group of 4-5, prepare report based on the following topics: 1. There are many different types of rig facilities from which offshore drilling operations take place. These include bottom founded drilling rigs (jackup and swamp barges), combined drilling and production facilities either bottom founded or floating platforms and deepwater mobile offshore drilling units (MODU) including semi-submersibles and drillships. Differentiate each type of drilling rig facilities in terms of their application, technical capabilities, economic factor, structural stability, mobilization/ towing ability and deck accommodation facilities. 2. Drilling process will also generally disturbs the natural stress state in a rock by removal of solid rocks and further affected by yielding of the rocks. Describe wellbore instability problems that had been encountered while driIling and explain how the rock mechanical properties and natural stress state in a rock affect the wellbore stability during drilling activities. Include any relevant empirical equations in your explanation. 3. Horizontal wells are used in conjunction with a variety of treatment technologies to deliver or remove liquids and gases to or from the subsurface. Discuss in details the technology descriptions, technology applicability, deflection techniques/ well control, advantages, disadvantages, challenges/obstacles, economic factor and regulatory and policy issues of horizontal well in context of directional drilling application.
4. Top drive is one great technological revolution for rig to replace rotary table drive

system. Discuss in details the advantages and disadvantages of this new system and compare how the performance of top drive drive system and rotary table drive system would affect bit life, rate of penetration, tripping time, and the overall time taken to complete the well while maintaining a good safety margin. 5. Deepwater drilling is the process of oil and gas exploration and production in depths of more than 500 feet. Since the first deepwater development began at Shell's Cognac field in 1979, deepwater exploration and development has presented some of the industrys biggest challenges and greatest potential rewards. Discuss in details

the potential rewards and challenges of drilling deepwater wells in context of weather, vessel loading & capacities, well control, riser management, environmental impacts and financial risks. 6. Underbalanced drilling is a method used to drill oil and gas wells where the pressure in the wellbore is kept lower than the fluid pressure in the formation being drilled. Discuss in details the reasons, application techniques/ procedures, advantages, disadvantages and challenges of using underbalanced drilling method. Differentiate underbalanced drilling with conventional drilling in context of technology applicability and economic factors. You can use diagrams/pictures as aid to your discussion. The report should include: (i). (ii). (iii). (iv). Introduction/background of topic. Discussion Conclusion References

The report must be written in a correct format of practical report and late submission will be heavily penalised. Apart from that, you are required to prepare an attractive slide for presentation session. Presentation assessment includes the following: 1. Physical apppearance 2. Communication skills and confident level 3. Interesting slide with attractive and effective pictures or videos 4. Response to questions
