The goal of chemical filter media is to capture harmful gases such as H2S, SO2, SO3, O3 and mercaptans in the air. The chemical filter media has a porous structure that can be impregnated with, for example, potassium permanganate (KMnO4); this is what gives the pellet its specific purple colour. Potassium permanganate is a very powerful oxidator. Harmful gases penetrate into the pellet through the microporous surface after which an irreversible oxidation process takes place. Harmful gases are converted into a neutral residual gas.

Alphasorb has developed different types of chemical filters using different types of impregnates. Alphasorb also produces the purple filter medium in different qualities. This purple medium reacts with a very extensive range of gases. The chemical filters can be supplied with different grades of potassium permanganatie: 4%, 6% and 8%. The higher the impregnation level, the higher the capacity and the longer the useful life.
