Spiritual Awakening: Can You Trust Your Premonitions?

We have all had that feeling of dj vu or woken up from a really vivid dream only for it to unfold right in front of us a short while later. Called premonitions, these are believed to be a form of spiritual awakening. Its just that most of us still believe that we will be considered candidates for the looney bin if we were to talk about it. Ignore that premonition at your own peril! The literal meaning of a premonition is to forewarn and its natural for us to believe that this is all about letting us know about something bad that is about to happen. However, Dr. Larry Dossey, MD, and the author of The Power of Premonitions says, premonitions come in all flavors. Sometimes they provide information about positive, pleasant happenings that lie ahead -- a job promotion, where the last remaining parking place is, or, in some instances, the winning lottery numbers. (An Interview with Dr. Larry Dossey, MD) Fact or hyperactive imagination? But if one were to delve into the depths of premonitions, there are several arguments that would come up on whether this actually works. If it was foolproof, then the natural assumption follows that people would be rich beyond description and illness would be unheard of. Dean Radin, PhD, Senior Scientist at the Institute Of Noetic Sciences (IONS) and Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Psychology at Sonoma State University is the first to research such occurrences. He says, Psychic, or psi phenomena fall into two general categories. The first is perception of objects or events beyond the range of the ordinary senses. The second is mentally causing action at a distance. In both categories, it seems that intention, the minds will, can do things that according to prevailing scientific theories it isnt supposed to be able to do. So does that mean premonitions exist? Dean Radin says, psi has been shown to exist in thousands of experiments. There are disagreements over how to interpret the evidence, but the fact is that virtually all scientists who have studied the evidence, including the hard-nosed skeptics, now agree that there is something interesting going on that merits serious scientific attention. (The Conscious Universe) Sixth Sense or First Sense? James Carpenter, a psychologist and consciousness researcher, thinks sixth sense is misleading. He believes precognition is so fundamental and innate he calls it first sense. Carpenter says we always exist a little beyond ourselves in space and a little ahead of ourselves in time.

If the need arises, we can exist beyond and ahead of ourselves not just a little, but a lot. I like this idea. First sense is like psychic radar that sweeps ahead of ourselves in space and time, informing us of events we need to know about. It operates unconsciously most of the time. (An Interview with Dr. Larry Dossey, MD) Should you follow this dream or that premonition? If premonitions are now an established fact, and reacting to each one is based on personal choice, how will you really know which ones to pay attention to and which ones to ignore? Dr. Joseph Mercola says, Five rules of thumb aid us in knowing which premonitions to take seriously: 1. if the premonition warns of a health crisis or death; 2. if the premonition is numinous, highly vivid, or "realer than real"; 3. if a dream is recurrent, appearing often in the same night or in succeeding nights, as if clamoring for attention; 4. if the premonition is associated with physical symptoms; or 5. if the premonition is experienced independently by a spouse, partner, or close friend. (An Interview with Dr. Larry Dossey, MD) Premonitions is our bodys and minds way of saving us from impending danger or preparing us for the worst, which in some cases is inevitable. Being able to sift through the emotions and understand how to react to them is essential. This article was written by Ruth D'Souza Prabhu a Content Writer for Adoley Oduntons Wellness Revolution.
