Statement of Purpose
Research The term connotes a seamless integration of mankinds inquisitiveness and his perseverance of discovering the unknown. A talk by Prof. Sheldon Lee Glashow, Nobel Laureate in Physics on Careers in research made me believe that my curiosity could become the foundation of a rewarding career in research. Driven by the ambition of being a successful researcher, I file this application at the Northeastern University, Boston to seek Masters in Computer Science (Track: Programming Languages). I am passionate about programming because, in addition to its requirement of expertise in application domain, specialized algorithms and formal logic, it unites creativity and engineering. My experience at Infosys Limited (NASDAQ: INFY) in designing and programming complex real time banking software systems has made me realize that programmatically challenging assignments truly excite me, satiating my inquisitive nature and allow me to grant expression to my creativity. This stint has also been instrumental in me comprehending the truth in Craig Bruces lines It's hardware that makes a machine fast. It is software that makes a fast machine slow. Therefore, my ambition is to take up research in the area of programming languages and advanced software development aimed at solving the efficiency problems faced by current and future software systems. As a freshman I was introduced to C programming language as a part of my undergraduate curriculum, subsequently followed by Data Structures and Analysis and Design of Algorithms. This kindled my interest in programming and I delved deeper into various aspects of the language. To enhance my knowhow I voluntarily developed a 2-pass assembler in C and Graphical Data structures tutor. These assignments played a significant role in strengthening my programming fundamentals. As an undergraduate project, my team and I developed MAARS - Mobile Agent based Adaptive e leaRning System. It is a distributed e learning system based on the multi agent paradigm, which has IBM aglets technology at its core. The system is designed to deliver course content in different formats like text, audio, video, and portable document format (PDF). It uses remote method invocation (RMI) to transfer multimedia content over the network. The system also has a series of adaptive computer based tests. The business logic of the application was built in Plain Old Java Objects (POJOs) with MySQL as the database. The user interface of the application is designed in Java Swings. The accurate implementation of this complex system was highly appreciated by peers and faculty and the project was selected at Shristhi 09, a national level project exhibition. As a Systems Engineer at Infosys, my latest assignment was the development of Strategic Pre Confirmation System. This project is based on service oriented architecture (SOA). I contributed to the design phase of the project, albeit in small way, by working with the team of Technology Architects. This exposure helped me understand that the application architecture is the primary carrier of system qualities such as performance, modifiability, and security, none of which can be achieved without a unifying architectural vision. During the development phase, my primary responsibility included the programming of loosely coupled, reusable pre confirmation services in Java in line with the architecture. My secondary responsibilities included the implementation of exception handling framework, data caching

framework using Ehcache and unit testing using JUnit. Previously, my assignment was the development of 3DCash A real time derivative trade settlement system. Its architecture is based on Java Messaging Service (JMS) and it works on delayed request processing using asynchronous message transfer. My responsibilities include the programming of Message Driven Beans (MDBs), and supporting Java classes which process the trade settlement messages and unit testing using JUnit. This enriching experience of working on different phases of SDLC helped me comprehend the significant challenges that exist in the specification, design and programming of complex software system. Apart from work, I am a regular attendee at Programming languages and software development seminar series organized by PATHFINDER Infosys Career Center. These seminars gave me an invaluable opportunity to interact with some of the veteran researchers and understand the current trends in these areas. I frequently read through the IEEE journals and publications available at the Infosys Library to augment my knowledge. All this has strengthened my resolve of being a researcher. The Northeastern University, Boston is critically acclaimed for carrying out advanced research. I am excited by the volume of research carried out at the Department of Computer Science in the area of programming languages. The flexibility that the department allows in learning and the strong industry interface assure me that I shall receive wholesome education. The courses offered as a part of the Programming Languages track are in line with my core areas of interest. I am particularly interested in the research carried out by Prof. Matthias Felleisen and Associate Prof. Olin Shivers in the area of Programming languages and Advanced Software development. I sincerely hope to be working with them from Fall 2012. I bring along an aptitude for team work, gusto for challenges and a passionate desire to learn. I am optimistic that my professional background, academic qualifications and soft-skills are found appropriate for Masters in Computer Science at your university. Ratnadeep Mangalvedhekar
