IRRIGATION PROFILE NELLORE DISTRICT General Information: MAP

Nellore District lies in between 130 30 North 150 6 North latitude and 790 5 East and 80015 East longitude in the coastal area of Andhra Pradesh. The District is adjoining Praksam District on the North, Chittoor District and TamilNadu on the South, Bay of Bengal on the East and Veligonda Hills and Cuddapah District on the West. The Pennar River is the major river flowing in the District to fall into bay of Bengal from Somasila Reservoir. The other rivers flowing in the District are Swarnamukhi, Pambaleru, Kalangi, Tsallakalva, Royyala kalva and Venkatagiriyeru. D. Lift Irrigation Schemes:: Under Irrigation circle, Nellore there are 6 completed L.I. Schemes . The details are as below: 1.Thikkavarm Pumping Scheme: The Thikkavaram Pumping Scheme is located near Thippaguntapalem(V) in Chillakur(M) on the Right side of Pambaleru River. The contemplated ayacut is 417 Ac.(168.83 Ha.). The discharging capacity is 6.44 C/S. This scheme was commenced on 28.8.1974 . The scheme is not working since 1991 because the anicut was outflanked. 2..Pothupalem Pumping Scheme: The Pothupalem Pumping Scheme is located near Pothupalem (V) in Gudur (M) on the right side of Pambaleru River. The contemplated ayacur is 356.Ac.(144.12 Ha). The discharging capacity is 5.5 C/S. This scheme was commenced on 28.8.1974 3. Suryapalem Pumping Scheme: The Surayapalem Pumping Scheme is located near Surayapalem(V) in Podalakur(M) on the right side of Pennar River. The contemplated ayacut is 524.43 Ac.(212.32 Ha.), The discharging capacity is 8.0 C/S. The scheme was commenced during 1965 at a cost of Rs. 1.765 L 4.Sangam Pumping Schema: The Sangam Pumping Scheme is located near Sangam(V) in Sangam(M) on the left side of Pennar River . The contemplated ayacut is 1933 Ac(782.6 Ha.). The discharging capacity is 30C/S . The scheme was commenced on 4.11.1965 at a cost of Rs.3.75 L 5.Degapudi Pumping Scheme: The Degapudi Pumping Scheme is located at Degapudi(V) in Podalakur(M) on the right side of Kandaleru river. The contemplated ayacut is 532.15.Ac(215.44 Ha.). The discharging capacity is 8.2 C/S . The scheme was commenced during 1965 at a cost of Rs.1.26 L 6. Devaravemuru Pumping Scheme: The Devaravemuru Pumping Scheme is located at Devaravemuru(V) in Sydapuram(M). The contemplated ayacut is 172Ac.(69.6 Ha.). The discharging capacity is 2.65 C/S. The scheme was commenced during 1966

at a cost of Rs. 1.12L A . P . S. I . D . C Under the control of APSIDC, there are 49 completed L.I. schemes serving 7356 Ac by utilising 1.2682 TMC of water under various schemes. There are 3 ongoing schemes to create an I.P. of 583 Ac by utilising 0.010 TMC and 3 contemplated schemes to create an IP of 1741 Ac by utilising 0.3009 TMC II. ONGOING PROJECTS: A. Major Projects: 1. Somasila Project : The Project is under construction across the River Pennar near Somasila(V), Ananthasagaram(M) to create a total IP of 256000 Ac under stabilisation and creation of new ayacut of 139000 Ac. in Nellore District. So far, the 308572 Ac is stabilised and 19428 Ac is yet to be stabilised. A new ayacut of 47864 Ac is developed and 91136 Ac is yet to be developed. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.796.00 Cr.(SSR of 2003-04) and an amount of Rs.453.88 Cr is spent. 2. Telugu Ganga Project: a. Under the control of SSLC & SB circle, Nellore: The Telugu Ganga Project is under Construction across the Kandaleru Stream. The project is located near Chellatur(V) in Rapur(M) to create a total IP of 1.66 Lakh Ac. and to generate 9 MW of power in addition to providing drinking water facility to Nellore and Gudur towns. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.907.0 Cr.(SSR 1998-99). The expenditure so far is Rs.377.00 Cr. b. Under the control of T.G.P.circle, Srikalahasthi: The Telugu Ganga Project is formulated to irrigate 5.75 L. Ac. in Drought prone area of Rayalaseema and uplands of Nellore District by utilizing 29 TMC of Krishna flood flows and 30 TMC of Pennar flood flows. Further, with a view to provide drinking water to Chennai city, the three Krishna basin States of A.P, Karnataka and Maharashtra agreed to spare 5 TMC each from their respective shares of watrer totalling to 15 TMC to meet the requirement . The T.G.P.Circle, Srikalahasthi is incharge of 6th to 9th branch channel under S.S Ganga channel( K.P.Canal;) and in envisaged to irrigated/stabilised a total ayacut of 97700 Ac. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 552.00 Cr. and an amount of Rs.218.00 Cr is spent and created an ayacut of 3620 Ac. B. Medium Irrigation Projects: 1.Kanupur Canal Scheme : The scheme is intended for stabilisation of 18,865 Ac of ayacut by supplementing water to 83 tanks with the

water from Somasila Project. The kanupur Canal takes off from the Head sluice on the Right bank of Sangam Anicut across river Pennar receiving regulated flows from Somasila Reservoir. Out of the contemplated Ayacut of 18865 Ac under 83 Tanks by utilising 1.934 TMC of water from Somasila Project. The works are still to be completed. Excavation of a portion of Branch canal is to be taken up after acquiring the Forest land. The L.A. proposals are sent to Cheif conservator of Forest for approval. Under, Stage II creation of I.P. in 44000 Ac is contemplated for which the Somasila Project is to be completed and the utilisation of water is 4.775 TMC. This stage is to be investigated. The original estimated cost of the scheme during 1962 was Rs. 69.59 L. The third revised estimate costing Rs.2757.83 L was under finalisation(SSRs.1995-96) C. Minor Irrigation Prijects:Nil L . I . Schemes: There are 3 L . I . Schemes under execution by APSIDC. The ayacut Contemplated is 583 Ac duly utilising 0.101 TMC of water. III. CONTEMPLATED PROJECTS: A. Major Projects: 1.G.N.S.S. Project/Somasila Swarnamukhi Link Canal Scheme: As per the original contemplation, the command area proposed under GNSS is 83000 Ac. covered in Nellore and Chittoor Districts. Since, the G.N.S.S. scheme will take sufficient time for completion, as it involves a number of tunnels passing through Reserved Forest Area, in the Feasibility Report submitted to the Principal Secretary to Government , I& CAD Dept. by the Chief Engineer, stigation vide Lr.No.CE(INV)/DD(PD)/570/99/VOL I, Dt 9-2-99, has informed that it is rthwhile to take up the present proposals drawing water from Somasila Reservoir to create early benefits. It is still under preliminary investigation stage. The detailed investigation including hydrological studies is proposed to be entrusted to WAPCOS. 2. Veligonda Project The project is proposed to construct across the river Krishna at Rajiv Tiger reserved Forest Village, Atmakur Mandal of Prakasam District at an estimated cost of Rs.979 Crores to create an IP of 438000Acres in the districts of Prakasam ( 336100 Acres), Nellore ( 16500Acres) and Kurnool ( 25400 acres). The detailed Investigation of the Project is completed / in progress and programmed to be completed by _____month,____year. The required clearances and Land Acquisition are expected to be completed by _______year. B. Medium Irrigation Projects (1). Barrage Cum Bridge on Swarnamukhi River near Vakadu(v): Swarnamukhi Barrage Cum Bridge is proposed across Swarnamukhi River near Vakadu(V) between existing Tupili Groyne and cause way just 30M upstream . Due to frequent breaches in Tupili Groyne, the ayacut under Tupili tank was suffering due to shortage of water. Hence, a Barrage was proposed to assure supplies to Tupili tank and in addition to 5 more tanks .The total ayacut under this project is 5750 Ac including the stabilisation of 2970 Ac. The water to be diverted from the River is 650 MC.Ft. The Design work was entrusted to M/s STUPS

CONSULTANTS, BOMBAY. Foundation stone was laid by the, then Honble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 31-8-1981 . The Project was shelved for reasons not known in 1995. Now the C.W.C. Vide Lr.No.CE/CWC/KG BASIN Dt: Apr-2002, accorded clearance to the proposed Barrage Cum Bridge and permitted the Government of Andhra Pradesh to accord investment clearance to the scheme. The estimate was ordered for recasting with current SS Rs.. The updation of the estimate is under process C. Minor Irrigation Projects: 1.Muthurajupalli Tank: Muthurajupalli tank is contemplated across local stream near Muthurajupalli(V) in Duttalur(M), which is one of the backward areas in Nellore District. The site lies in Sub-basin No.32 of Lower Pennar Basin. Yeild proposed to be utilised is 6 MC.ft. and the I.P. that is going to be created is 120 Ac(a) 48 Ha. The cost of the Scheme is worked and to Rs.37 lakhs. 2.Vengampalli Tank: Vengampalli tank is contemplated across Palavagu near Vengampalli(V) in Marripadu(M), one of the backward area in Nellore District. The scheme also involves excavation of supply channel from aready constructed anicut across Boggeru river to feed the newly proposed Vengampalli tank. The yeild proposed to be utilised is 49.76 MC.ft. and the ayacut that is going to be benefitted is 305 Ha. in Rabi period. The cost of the scheme is worked out to Rs.212.70 lakhs. In addition, the following schemes are at various stages of investigation.
