Opens Bennington Store Former Haynes & Kane Location Beautifully Restored and Filled with Top Brands BENNINGTON The former Haynes & Kane Furniture Store location has found rebirth as the newest store in the LaFlammes Inc. chain. The doors are now open for shoppers looking to find top brands in furniture, mattresses, flooring, appliances and electronics. The store is located at the intersection of Harwood Hill and Northside Drive. Months of renovations and preparations have come to an end and the LaFlammes Inc. team is eager for the residents of Bennington and the surrounding area to stop in and see the new store. We preserved familiar elements from the Haynes & Kane store, such as the stone fireplace and the large square windows, stated owner Christopher LaFlamme, Jr. We added new windows for more light, brought in new carpeting and flooring throughout the store, and replaced, repaired and repainted the walls. The new store is 12,500 square feet and has multiple showrooms, including an Americas Mattress gallery featuring products by Serta. LaFlamme stated the response from the Bennington community has been very positive so far. There was tremendous support for our successful Bring Back the Chair project, he noted, referring to a petition campaign to restore the landmark ladderback chair that formerly stood in front of the Haynes & Kane store. Approval to recreate the 19foot-tall chair was received from the Bennington Historic Preservation Commission in May. LaFlamme reported the process of reconstructing the chair has begun. The Bennington location is the fourth store in the LaFlammes Inc. chain. The three other locations are in Washington County, NY. All four stores feature the top brands that you want to make your house a home. The Granville (9140 Route 22) and Whitehall (192 Broadway Route 4) also feature Americas Mattress galleries. The Cambridge store (2823 Route 22) will be upgraded later this year and another gallery will be added there as well. Normal store hours at all four LaFlammes, Inc. locations are Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. LaFlammes, Inc. has been doing business in the region since 2002 and prides itself on not just being the store customers will want to buy from, but also the people customers like doing business with. THE HIGHLIGHT ACTING TROUPE WILL BE HOLDING A 2 WEEK SUMMER THEATER PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN between the ages of 6 and 16. The program will begin on July 9 and end on July 20th. and will be held at the Brittonkill District Auditorium, Rt. 2 in Cropseyville. The program runs from 9 - 3:30 p.m. daily. The Federal Convention convened in the State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on May 14, 1787, to revise the Articles of Confederation. Because the delegations from only two states were at first present, the members adjourned from day to day until a quorum of seven states was obtained on May 25. Through discussion and debate it became clear by mid-June that, rather than amend the existing Articles, the Convention would draft an entirely new frame of government. All through the summer, in closed sessions, the delegates debated, and redrafted the articles of the new Constitution. Among the chief points at issue were how much power to allow the central government, how many representatives in Congress to allow each state, and how these representatives should be elected--directly by the people or by the state legislators. The work of many minds, the Constitution stands as a model of freedom for individuals under the rule of law.

Ratification. By January 9, 1788, five states of the nine necessary for ratification had approved the Constitution--Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. But the eventual outcome remained uncertain in pivotal states such as Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. On February 6, withFederalists agreeing to recommend a list of amendments amounting to a bill of rights, Massachusetts ratified by a vote of 187 to 168. Although Massachusetts was now safely in the Federalist column, the recommendation of a bill of rights was a significant victory for the anti-Federalists. Six of the remaining states later appended similar recommendations. The United States Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. It was ratified by nine states in July of 1988. By December 1791 the Bill of Rights was ratified by 3/4 of the states.

4TH OF JULY CELEBRATION- The Salem Volunteer Fire Department is gearing up for their annual 3 day July 4th 2012 activities. The theme for the parade this year will be: 250 years. The carnival will start at 6pm on Monday July 2nd and Tuesday July 3rd at the carnival grounds on Archibald St off from NYS RTE 22. Stop by and try some of the delicious food that will be served or try your luck at one of the many games for kids or adults. Also try your luck at winning by buying a raffle ticket for one of the many donated prizes. DJHappy Days Again will be on hand all three nights providing the entertainment. On Wednesday July 4th our parade line-up starts at 4pm at the Holy Cross church on North Main St (RTE 22). The parade will start at 5pm sharp and will go down Main St. to Park Place to the carnival grounds on Archibald St. As usual we are looking for a lot of floats for the parade, so if you belong to a group, organization, or just a family put your thinking caps on and start designing your float, because that is what makes up a parade along with a lot of music whether on a float or marching. There will be awards for the floats that come closes to the theme. On July 4th at 9:30 pm there will be a large fireworks display with a rain date of 9pm July 5th. Just a reminder that the cake booth is always looking for baked goods for all three nights so please help us out.
