The Story and History of Anthony of Padua
The story and history of Anthony of Padua. Anthony came from a noble and wealthy family but he rejected wealth and status for the sake of Christ and he became a poor Franciscan. St. Anthony of Padua was famous for his deep religious fervour. He is said to have preached to the shes in prefe rence to some obstinate unbelievers upon whom he could not make any impression, which incide nt will generally be found illustrated in churches dedicated to his honour. It has always been usual among the citizens of Padua to speak of St. Anthony as ii Santo, the Saint, without adding any other name. This is because when he died the Franciscans were so fearful of the citizens laying claim to his body in order to bury it in their church, that they endeavoured to keep his death a secret; but we are told that the very children of the city, "being divinely instigated thereto, ran about the streets crying with a loud voice, Il Santo morto! Il Santo morto!"
