The following information will talk about the creation, birth, and purpose of android. I will discuss when and by whom it was created. I will also discuss why it was created. I will also discuss who currently owns the android operating system. Now to briefly talk about what I will be discussing, android was born in 2005 based on the Linux kernel, which we all know is one of the more popular operating systems next to windows. It was created to be a competitor to the apple iPhones ios platform.

What is the android operating system? The android operating system is a Linux based kernel operating system that was designed to run smart phones and tablet computers. It was created to be a competing operating system to apples iPhone which dominated the smart phone market beating out both windows based smart phones and the blackberry smart phones. Much like computer based Unix/Linux, the android operating system was written in C, C++, and java. This enabled the operating system to have installable applications and to be updateable. Now to go into the history of android. The android operating system was first released commercially in April 30, 2009, the first installment was named Cupcake version 1.5. Following Cupcake was version 1.6 named Donut, then 2.0/2.1 clair in October of 2009. Then followed version 2.2 named Froyo in May of 2010, 2.3 gingerbread in December of that same year. In February of 2011 honeycomb was released when android moved into the tablet market. October 19, 2011 a new and fresh android operating system was released named ice cream sandwich, more commonly referred to ICS. This was revolutionary due to the fact that the prior versions were not cross compatible between the smartphones and tablets. ICS was designed to make a straight across the board android operating system that both smart phones and tablets could use to communicate between each other. Now on to the key features and uses of the android operating system. Android is now a collaboration of an organization called Open Handset Alliance founded in November of 2007. The companies involved in this are HTC, Google, Intel, LG, Marvell Technology Group, Motorola, NVidia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Texas Instruments. With the collaborations of all these companies we were given awesome features we fell in love with in an

android phone. We have touchscreen interactions, Bluetooth, gps navigation, lost phone and find service, an application store both were paid and free applications may be download straight to the phone without the need of a computer. We also have the ability to check, send and receive emails from our handsets. Since android is Linux based, it also has the ability to use open office, which is a Linux/Unix version of Microsofts office,, which includes PowerPoint, excel, and word. If you were to type a document on your android device and went to transfer it to you home or office computer, you would be able to use it in office, and vice versa. Now to talk about who uses android and the problems they have faced. The people who use android are everyday people like you and me. Companies have integrated android into their production systems for on the go updates, and most notably in December of 2011 the United States pentagon official announced that it was approved for use by its personnel. The reason why android is so commonly used now is due to the fact of it being user friendly. It was due to this ease that made android very popular. This popularity also caused problems for Google and its partners in this venture. Google and its partners had faced lawsuits from sever other companies claiming patent and copyright infringements. For example, in August of 2010 oracle tried suing Google over claimed copyright infringements and related patents to the amount of 6.1 billion. A federal judge denied the valuation of this clam and told oracle to reevaluate their estimates. Google released a barrage of defenses on this claim and was later dismissed.

As seen in the above writings you see that android was based on open source code and was designed for the world to enjoy. It was also designed to be open source to developers and programmers are able to make improvements for a better user environment. All these companies who want to throw a lawsuit against the android revolution are simply disheartened due to the fact that they are losing revenue to the makers of the handsets and operating system that is android.
