SAN BEDA COLLEGE ALABANG HIGH SCHOOL IBED SOCIAL STUDIES AREA POLITICAL SCIENCE ELECTIVE PROPOSAL FOR

OR FOURTH YEAR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (ARTS AND LETTERS)

RATIONALE For decades, the San Beda College system is proudly known as the institution that produces the finest lawyers in the country, being exemplified by its growing prestigious alumni and current lawmakers in the state. As law being the colleges most distinguished course and study, the school has successfully developed young high school graduates to become critical-minded and highly analytical, which are distinct characteristics to be accepted into the discipline. However, in the four decades of existence of San Beda College Alabang high school department, there has never been an elective specifically designed to prepare and provide students, particularly the graduating students in the Arts Sections, with knowledge and overview of a subject that can make them pursue law as a career path. For years, only Analytical Geometry, a preparatory subject for Physical Science students in Engineering, Basic Human Anatomy and Physiology, a course for Medical Science students in the field of Medicine and Science, Journalism and Accounting and Statistics for the Arts and Entrepreneurship students are offered. These subjects are handled and taught by the Science, Math, English and T.L.E. departments, and while these existing electives are very much valuable as proven by our successful alumni who enter into college better prepared than from any other high school, the institution can offer more invaluable knowledge with the creation of a basic Political Science elective under the Social Studies Area.

OBJECTIVES To offer/add another substantial and worthwhile elective especially for Arts and Letters sections that would help them pursue law as a discipline in the future; To make future law students and government leaders be better equipped at an earlier time in their educational lives; To provide background and overview of the following: o history of political science and socio-political thinkers o Philippine Constitution and Government o elements, functions, duties and important characteristics of a state o Human Rights o Socio-Political Theories To develop logical reasoning, critical thinking and analysis in the study of Political Science; To foster nationalism and sense of social responsibility in the students.

ADVANTAGES The elective can be adapted into the K-12 system as it aims to decongest the present curriculum. In the social studies area, Contemporary Philippine history topics and units on the branches of government, areas that are realistically often uncovered due to the lack of time in a school year, can be assured to be taught to every high school student; The Arts sections will have another elective that equally matches the Physical Science and Medical Science electives, while the Basic Accounting elective and Statistics elective may be solely for Entrepreneurship sections; Combined with Journalism as an elective by the English department, the school can produce future Political Science graduates who are fluent and competent in English communication skills coming from the Arts sections; In the long run, students can be further coaxed into pursuing pre-law courses and law in San Beda College.
