How SIM Box Detection Works

When a call is made to a GSM subscriber, the calls signal is routed from the originating network through one or more transit operators who direct the call toward the terminating network. In a calling-party-pays model, the terminating operator charges a termination tariff to the originating network. SIM box fraud takes place when a SIM box poses as a transit operator gateway. The box uses multiple legitimate SIM cards purchased from a GSM operator to reroute calls over that operators mobile network. As a result, the SIM box owner collects the tariff instead of the operator. Additionally, the fraudsters charge a much lower rate than traditional interconnect gateways, taking away revenue from the actual network operator. SIM boxes also cause localized spectrum management issues as well as potential customer dissatisfaction caused by inaccurate caller ID displays. The Syniverse SIM Box Detection Solution quickly discovers SIM boxes when Syniverse makes thousands of test calls to a small number of operator-provided numbers over a wide variety of long distance routes. If a call is routed through a SIM box, it inherits the calling number ID of the SIM card through which it passes. Syniverse detects and then reports the MSISDN numbers of the SIM used in the SIM box to the operator. With this information, an operator has the opportunity to investigate and terminate service for those SIM cards, effectively disabling the SIM box.
