Dana Fredwell Introduction to the Water Cycle

Introduction: This lesson will be an introduction to the water cycle. Content Area and Grade or Age Level of Students: Third Grade Objectives: Students will be able to name the parts of the water cycle, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and surface runoff. Students will be able to define the parts of the water cycle. Students will be able to create a model of the water cycle. Standards Addressed: Missouri Grade Level Expectations
SC1C. Observe and identify that water evaporates (liquid water changes into a gas as it moves into the air) SCA2. Energy has a source, can be stored, and can be transferred but is conserved within a system. (Sun can cause solids to change to liquids then gas.)

Relative Advantage: Students can visually see the water droplets moving through the water cycle and make connections through music. Timeline: Three class periods. The song (video) will be played in the mornings for one week, to help with memorization.

Materials: http://danafredwell541.wordpress.com/hypermediaintergration/earth-science/ Students will need their Science notebooks to take notes and draw sketches. Grouping Strategies: Whole class instruction. Learning Activities: Day One This is an introduction to the water cycle. 1. Students will view the Magic School Bus video that describes waters importance to the earth and our lives. 2. Students will write down three important points to share about water. (Teacher will use leading questions to discuss solid, liquid, and gas, as it pertains to the water cycle) Day Two 1. Students will watch the water cycle video, which is a song that will help them memorize the parts of the water cycle. (This video will be played daily for a week) Students will be given the words evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and run off to define in their notebooks. 2. Students will watch the animation of the water cycle video and name the parts of the animation. (Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and runoff). 3. Students will discuss why the sun is so important in the water cycle. Day Three 1. Students will create a model to demonstrate the water cycle. This will be complete in one class period. Can draw a picture, make a 3-d

model with medium of their choice, use a graphic organizer Web tool like buble, etc This must be complete in one class period.

Assessment: Day three assignment creating a model to demonstrate knowledge of the water cycle. Adaptations for Learners with Special Needs: Students can be paired with others for the assessment. References: http://www.youtube.com/education
