Pachim KTanim from Rabbi Yudin (From Israel): In honor of Parashas Chukas: The Magain Avraham O.C (580:9) writes that some have the custom to fast on the Friday before Parshas Chukas. In 1244 on the 9th of Tamuz, a Friday (as this year) on this day, 20 wagon-loads of holy books were burnt. It is hard to imagine what an incredible loss this was, as this was before printing, and each and every book was hand-written. They found a hint from the opening comment of the Targum: Zos Chukas Hatorah"Dah Gzeiras Oreisah" which means both this is the law of the Torah, and the cutting-destroying of the Torah. The lesson to us has to be: greater respect and reverence for Sefarim. If you come into Shul, and you see a Siddur or Chumash upside-down, straighten it out. One is not to sit on a bench if there is a Siddur or Chumash on that bench. One cannot place any other book on top of a Chumash, including a Siddur. Finally, a true question: a man was in prison, and the authorities allowed the family to bring food for the prisoner each day. They wrapped the food in newspaper. One day they realized they can wrap the food in a page of Gemorah, enabling him to learn each day. Should they use an old Gemorah, or new one to wrap the food? Why? Let me know your answer! Thank you, and Shabbat Shalom from Beit Shemesh-- to all.
