Husband in China forced abortion 'missing': family

The husband of a Chinese woman whose forced abortion seven months into her pregnancy caused an uproar has disappeared, a relative said Tuesday, adding her family is being harassed on a daily basis. Feng Jianmei had to go through the termination earlier this month in the northern province of Shaanxi because she failed to pay a hefty fine for exceeding China's strict "one-child" population control policy. The case caused an outcry when photos emerged online of Feng lying in a hospital bed in Zhenping county next to her baby's bloody corpse, prompting an official probe that concluded action should be taken against the perpetrators. But a relative said Tuesday that Feng's husband Deng Jiyuan had gone missing Sunday. "The last time I saw him, he was with all of us and he said that some leader wanted to speak to him, so he left," the relative, who refused to be named or otherwise identified, told AFP. "We haven't seen him again since, and we can't get through to his mobile." Calls made to police and government in Zhenping, and to the higher-level Ankang city government, went unanswered. The relative added that since Sunday, scores of unidentified people had been harassing the family. "On Sunday evening, we decided to go home (from hospital), and a lot of people had gathered outside," the relative said. "They hung banners on a bridge, and many people came and shouted that we were traitors. "Now wherever we go, people follow us." Feng's family members have spoken to foreign media and the relative said the protest could be linked to these interviews. It was unclear who the protesters were but online reports suggested they had been hired by local authorities. "If this is not organised by the powers-that-be, how can people make banners on their own and carry them out to the street?" one web user wrote on Sina's popular microblog service. China's family planning policy aims to control the world's largest national population, now swollen to 1.3 billion people. Under the measure, urban families are generally allowed to have one child, while rural families can give birth to two children if the first is a girl. Parents have to pay a fine if they contravene the rules. Rights groups say that as a result of the policy thousands of women have been forced by authorities to terminate their pregnancies.

65% of Pinoys favor the implementation of K+12

By Alexander Villafania PASIG CITY, METRO MANILASix to seven (about 65 percent) Filipinos believe that the K+12 education reform spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd) will prepare their children better for higher education, according to a survey.The survey by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) also noted that 61 percent of adults also think that children will finish school and get better jobs.The March 2012 report of the SWS also showed that 59 percent of those surveyed said they think more students will be encouraged to finish the K+12 senior high school level, believing that that additional two years in high school are equivalent to college-level education.Ever since the SWS conducted the monthly survey from June 2011, the number of adults who believe in the basic education reform has remained high.Adults interviewed in Metro Manila were more encouraged by the program (68 percent), followed by the rest of Luzon (66 percent), then the Visayas (61 percent).In addition, the March 2012 survey also emphasized in the increase of believers from the lower economic C class, from 55 percent the previous month to 68 percent in March. There was a slight increase for E class (from 58 percent to 60 percent), but a decrease in the ABC class (from 70 percent to 67 percent).The survey showed that only 49 percent of adult Filipinos were familiar that other countries were already using the standard 12-year basic education programs. The Philippines is one of the few countries that is still using the 10-year basic education program.Fifty-one percent of those surveyed said that they became aware about the differences in number of years from the survey itself.Still, awareness was higher (68 percent) among Filipinos, at least for those surveyed in Metro Manila.Education Secretary Armin A. Luistro said the results of the survey underscored the appreciation of Filipinos with the K to 12.It is important to us that many people are now beginning to appreciate the merits of K to 12, a reform program that will open more opportunities to our youngpeople, Luistro said in a statement.DepEd has finally implemented the K+12 program this June, starting with kindergarten and the first six years of primary education (Grades 1-6) and incoming first year high school students (Grade 7).By school year 2016-2017, DepEd will implement Grade 11 and 12 (high school years 5 and 6).The implementation of the K+12 program was met with criticism from various sectors, particularly party lists in the House of Representatives, several congressmen and senators.The main criticism is lack of budget, which caused existing education problems such as lack of school materials, classrooms, and low teacher salaries.

Bataan Racers Plant Tree Seedlings

DINALUPIHAN, Bataan (PNA) - This landlocked town held its second Duathlon on Saturday with more than 100 participants coming from all over the country who planted narra tree seedlings at the foot of Mt. Malasimbu as part of the race. The participants first ran from the starting Line at the Dinalupihan plaza to the oval ground and went biking to Barangay Sapang Balas. They then left their bikes in Sapang Balas and ran again towards the foot of Mt. Malasimbu where they planted two narra tree seedlings each. After planting tree seedlings, they ran downhill and then rode their bikes to the oval ground where they left their bikes and then ran towards the finish line at the town plaza. They raced through 27 kilometers of concrete and dirt roads one way. Town Mayor Joel Jaime Payumo said the second duathlon showed that such event can also be held in Dinalupihan. "Instead of endurance competition only, the duathlon has environmental component," the mayor said. Dennis Cuatro, event coordinator, said the competition was different from other duathlons. "This is ride and bike, but unique because of tree planting," he said. Cuatro said participants came from all over the Philippines mostly from Metro Manila with some from Central Luzon, the Visayas and Bicol Region. Some police officers from Bataan joined the competition.
