Like me, you may have thought before in your life, "why do we have visiting teaching?" When I was younger I just could not grasp the vision of it...I did not need women I barely knew coming over to my house with their messy children, pretending they cared about me and then quickly sharing a message they really hadn't thought much about. That was my idea of visiting teaching and I really didn't care for it. I have to admit, I have never been the ideal visiting teacher but try much harder now than I did then! In 2009 I was given a gift by my Heavenly Father, two FABULOUS visiting teachers who taught me what visiting teaching is supposed to be. They helped give me a testimony of this church calling I had always struggled with. These women visited me as though they were my friends, not my "visiting teachers." We laughed together and cried together...almost every visit! I felt the spirit so strongly when they were in my home. The message was given in a well thought out manner which led to more in depth and heartfelt gospel discussions. They were there for me when I needed them and I rarely had to ask. They made sure I had the opportunity to attend the temple once a month and provided dinner and babysitting many nights when my dad was sick in the hospital with cancer. I never had to question whether they would be willing to help me when needed nor did I worry that I was putting them out. The year or so they served me was a difficult one in my life and they were a blessing from my Heavenly Father. Our Savior taught us how to serve others. He spent his entire life serving and helping those in need; and not just those he knew well or felt comfortable around. I believe visiting teaching is not a church calling given just to bless the lives of those we serve, but to bless our own lives as we serve faithfully. It is the same as every other calling or duty in the church--the more we put our heart into it the more we get out of it and the more the Lord blesses us. We need to faithfully follow the example of our Savior and put our whole hearts into this divine calling. I know the lives and testimonies of the sisters we serve will be strengthened as we do so...and so will ours! In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
