The Muscular System: Virtual Dissection

Grade Level: 11-12 Subject: Anatomy and Physiology Honors Prepared by: Alyson Nelson Overview and Purpose: This lesson was created to help students identify the major muscles of the human muscular system by using the Frog Dissection virtual dissection app and the Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D app. Educational Standards: Students will analyze the interdependence of the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems as these relate to the protection, support and movement of the human body. Objectives: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: (Knowledge) Identify and label the major muscles of the human body. (Synthesis) Describe the location, origin, and insertion of the major muscles of the human body. (Comprehension) Organize identified muscles into their major muscle groups. (Application) Illustrate the major muscle groups of the human body.

Materials Needed: iPad or other tablet computer Frog Dissection app Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D app Other Resources: Textbook (Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology, 7th ed. Elaine N. Marieb) Student worksheet

Information: Students will be divided into their small lab groups of 3-4 students. Each group will receive 1 iPad and a student worksheet for each student. Verification: Throughout the lesson, the teacher will check for verification by: Rotating throughout student groups while using the iPad apps to help with any problems students are having. Aiding students in identifying origins and insertions by supplementing material with the textbook. Addressing issues with illustrations as small groups meet to proof their drawings.

Teacher Planning: (pre-class) Before the class, the teacher should prepare the iPads by downloading the Frog Dissection app and Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D app. Activity: (90 minute block) (10 minutes) The teacher will introduce the lesson by reviewing the major muscles of the human body by using the Promethean board. The teacher will also demonstrate how to use the Frog Dissection app and the Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D app. (25 minutes) Students will work in small groups of 3-4 to dissect the frog and identify the major muscles by using the Frog Dissection app on the iPad. Each group will receive 1 iPad and each student will receive a student worksheet with diagrams and instructions on how to use the app. Each group will dissect the frog and identify the muscles listed on the student worksheet. (25 minutes) Students will continue to work in small groups to use the Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D app to identify the same muscles in the human body. They will also describe the location, origin, and insertion of the muscles on the human body by completing the student worksheet. Finally, they will work together to organize the muscles into their major muscle groups. (20 minutes) After all muscles have been identified in both the frog and the human,

students will work individually to illustrate the major muscle groups on their diagram worksheet. They will use color to color-code the major groups and label each major muscle. (10 minutes) As the students complete their illustrations, they will share their illustrations in their small group to proof and correct any mistakes before submitting their work. Notes The Frog Dissection app for iPad costs $3.99 to download. The Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D app for iPad costs $6.99 to download.
