Equipment that was retired
decades ago to make way for
modern technology will be
brought back to life at Medford
Historical Societys 24th annu-
al Country Day at Kirbys Mill,
275 Church Road.
Both floors of the mill will
be open for the event on Satur-
day, July 8 from noon to 4 p.m.
Admission is free and there
will be complimentary park-
ing.
Approximately 2,000 people
are expected to attend.
We have all kinds of an-
tique equipment running as it
was 50, 100, 200 years ago,
said society president Bill
Stauts. We have a display set
up by the Civil War infantry
personnel.
While the re-enactors per-
form in their encampment and
shoot weapons to add to the at-
mosphere, there will be a
working print shop circa 1850
inside of the mill, displays
from different eras on the sec-
ond floor, a blacksmith shop, a
gristmill in action and crafters
demonstrating their trades.
Crafters will include a
broom maker, basket maker,

deco carver and doll creator, all of
whom are from the local and
neighboring communities.
Basically, (its) an open house
for the historical society to show-
case what we have out of Kirbys
Mill, explained chairman John
Hines. Usually you dont get to
see the mill itself.
Most of the displays date from
the turn of the century, he said.
Its been donated over the
years.
The day will be especially bene-
ficial for area children to learn
about history, but visitors of any
age will have the opportunity to
learn something new.
It seems like kids like it, said
Stauts.
According to Hines, there will
be a manual sawing machine
with a lever. Children will be able
to push it back and forth to even-
tually cut off a piece of the log.
Kids really find it fascinat-
ing, he said.
The community is greatly in-
volved in contributing to the his-
torical societys efforts, he ex-
plained. One yearly visitor brings
special finds from her grand-
mothers attic.
Its a fun afternoon, Hines
said. Before electricity and be-
fore modern power, you had to do
a lot of things by hand.
Its not a complete historic pe-
riod but you get the sampling of it
anyway.
Many of the displays will be
shown continuously throughout
the four-hour event.
It will be an old fashioned expe-
rience for those attending, with
sites that may be similar to a fair
from long ago, explained Stauts.
The day can be held each year
through funds accumulated at
other historical society events.
During the event, the museum
gift shop will be open to cus-
tomers.
Refreshments will be sold for a
small fee, including ice-cold wa-
termelon slices, said Hines.
We try to keep things reason-
able, he said, and hopes that peo-
ple will be able to enjoy the histor-
ical aspects of the day.

listing of area crafters, can be

The following items were taken
from reports on file with the Med-
ford Police Department:
Medford Township police, fire
and EMS were dispatched on July
25 at 12:09 p.m. to the intersection
of Stokes and Skeet roads on a re-
port of a motor-vehicle crash. Po-
lice say the driver of one of the
cars was complaining of bruising
and contusions from the airbag
deployment. A juvenile passenger
in the other vehicle suffered a lac-
eration on her forehead.
Both victims were treated by
Medford EMS on location and
were transported to the hospital.
Police say an investigation re-
vealed the first driver was travel-
ing northbound on Stokes Road
in her 2005 Chevrolet Impala and
the other driver was traveling
southbound on Stokes Road in
her 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer.
The impala attempted a left turn
into the entrance of Ironstone
Village and the vehicles collided.
Charges are pending, police said.
On June 27, the Medford Chase
and Brookside Developments had
a rash of vehicle burglaries. Po-
lice investigation revealed that
unknown subject(s) entered a
total of 15 vehicles between 13
residences in the above neighbor-
hoods. It was determined that all
of the vehicles were unsecured
and the time frame was between 6
p.m. on June 26, and 9 a.m. on
June 27. Among the items taken
from the vehicle's were; U.S. cur-
rency, GPS units, a watch, car
charger, radar detector, extension
plug and a Swiss army knife.
These incidents are still under in-
vestigation.

ries, he said in late June as the
cherry season waned.
All summer, visitors can pick
up fresh sweet corn and peaches.
The farm also sells iced corn.
Its been our trademark in the
sweet corn part of our business
since my parents started bringing
sweet corn down in 1960, he said.
Corn kept cold stays fresh, he
explained.
Of course, the fruits and veg-
gies are not the only draw to the
farm.
Each night in the summer, the
farm will be hosting special
events ranging from fun nights
for the family to ice cream socials
to splash pad nights.
Family Fun Nights are
Wednesday evenings in the sum-
mertime, Johnson said. Well
have different types of entertain-
ment for the family.
Some nights, there may be an
animal show, while a balloon
maker will be on hand for other
nights. The entrance fee for Dis-
covery Barnyard will be slashed
in half.
Check out the farms Facebook
page each week to find the theme.
The hayrides that run out to
the fields are free from 5 p.m. to 7
p.m., he added.
While the farm is generally
family-oriented, a more adult at-
mosphere will be felt on Friday
nights beginning at 5 p.m. for the
Farm B-Q and Cruise Nights
through the end of August.
A DJ will be present to add a
doo-wop vibe while visitors view
classic cars and eat some tasty
barbecue.

A sure shore stop
Russos Fruit and Vegetable
Farm Market has stood as a com-
munity staple for more than 40
years at the intersection of Car-
ranza Road and Medford Lakes
Road in the heart of Tabernacle.
Famous for its apple cider
donuts, Jersey Fresh ripe toma-
toes, corn, peaches and blueber-
ries, the market is a traditional
stop for many passers-by on their
vacation route to the states fa-
mous beaches.
Being on the four corners
here, I think were very fortunate
for the location that we have,
said Russo family member Joann
Gsell.
The market is a familiar com-
munity face, she explained, and
the farm itself has prospered in
Tabernacle for more than 70
years. Over time, the farm grew
to include the market and bakery
as well as a greenhouse operation
to meet customer needs.
This year, produce has grown
ahead of schedule. Currently,
blueberries and tomatoes rule the
scene.
What we have thats our own
is constantly changing, Gsell
said, referencing local produce
items. The bakery, however, has
consistent offerings.
Shamongs Valenzano Winery
options are also sold on the prem-
ises.
Russos is open from 8 a.m. to 6
p.m. every day from Easter to
Christmas, barring Thanksgiving
Day.

All in the family
Tracy Duffield married into
the Duffield Family, which owns
and operates Duffields Farm
Market at 280 Chapel Heights Rd.
in Washington Township.
Duffields father-in-law took
over the family farm in 1953 at
age 16, carrying on the clans sto-
ried tradition.
Duffield manages the produce
at the market, while the two other
sisters-in-law oversee other as-
pects of the store.
The farm has seen an abun-
dance of crops this season, and
an early bloom for many.
Its strawberry fields forever,
Duffield said, noting that the
strawberry season continues to
yield fresh berries past its typical
timeline.
Peaches and corn came in
early, though, and Duffield said,
employees made sure to let every-
one in town know via Facebook,
Twitter and the markets newslet-
ter.
The farm is enjoying an extra-
long season for its produce. But
thats not the only reason to shop
there.
You know its fresh. Our corn,
we only sell the day we pulled it.
You cant do any better than
that, Duffield said. Its cheaper,
as delivery people are adding
costs for fuel, and were very par-
ticular about how we raise our
crops.
The market is open Monday
through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7
p.m. For more information, call
856-589-7090.
You can also sample some of
what Duffields has to offer at the
Voorhees Farmers Market, held
on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon
at the Voorhees Town Center.
The last one standing
Back when Cherry Hill was
Delaware Township, the region
was chock-full of farms. By 1931,
82 farms set up shop in the town-
ship, dotting hundreds of acres of
open space with farm fields and
roadside stands.
More than 80 years later, only
one working farm remains in
town Springdale Farms, located
on Springdale Road, about half a
mile off of busy Route 70.
You can find loads of baked
goods, fresh fruits and vegetables,
plants and items for your home
and garden at the shop.
This summer, guests at the
market can enjoy a variety of
fresh fruit and vegetables, includ-
ing beets, blackberries, broccoli,
cabbage, cucumbers, eggplant,
lettuce, peppers, raspberries,
beans, squash, and of course,
sweet corn and tomatoes.
Springdale Farms is open Mon-
day through Saturday from 8 a.m.
to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m.
to 6 p.m. For more information,

in our opinion
F
rom all of us at Elauwit Media
to all of our loyal readers, we
wish you the happiest and
healthiest Fourth of July.
As rough as things are in our coun-
try our economy is still poor, unem-
ployment is extremely high and the
Phillies cant seem to win a baseball
game anymore things could be a lot
worse for us.
A quick glance at the world around
us reveals just how fortunate we are, as
Americans, to have the freedoms we
do. And lets face it, these freedoms we
often take for granted.
Imagine, for just a moment, what it
must be like to live in Syria.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in China, where we recently learned of
how real and barbaric the nations one-
child-only policy really is.
Imagine what it must be like to live
in Egypt, where theres still instability
and a lack of confidence in the nations
parliament.
We live in a nation where, despite
our differences, we manage to co-exist
peacefully for the most part.
We live in a nation where our Con-
gress and where the office of the presi-
dent have functioned and survived for
236 years.
We live in a nation where, for the
most part, were free to do as we please.
This simply isnt the case in many
corners of the world.
Today, we give thanks for the liber-
ties won for us hundreds of years ago.
We give thanks for the many women
and men who have made incredible
sacrifices to protect these freedoms in
battle in Afghanistan and Iraq and
countless other places in the Middle
East and abroad.
We remember their families who,
like they, have also made sacrifices by
saying goodbye so we can do things as
simple as having a barbecue sometime
today.
Finally, we give thanks for all that
America is and stands for. It may not
be perfect, but a quick glance of the
news shows: life could be much worse.
Happy Fourth of July
A quick look at world news a reminder of how fortunate we Americans are
Independence Day 2012
July 4, 2012 today we give thanks
for all the liberties we have as
Americans. We give thanks for the
sacrifices our miliary continues to
make. We give thanks that we are
American.
Unemployment rate is based
on monthly interviews, surveys
The opinion piece in your latest issue ar-
gues that unemployment statistics are
based on individuals collecting unemploy-
ment benefits.
Thats wrong!
The unemployment rate is based on
monthly interviews with 60,000 house-
holds, nationwide, and surveys among a
large number of employers.
Everyone, who is not working, but look-
ing for employment, is counted as unem-
ployed, regardless whether they collect
unemployment or not.

The Bureau of Labor Statistic.

Writer supports Sen.
Bob Menendez for re-election
I respectfully disagree with a recent let-
ter that opposes the re-election of Sen. Bob
Menendez.
He has been active in supporting the
rights of New Jersey citizens, as well as
those in the country as a whole. He has
supported legislation to hire teachers, po-
lice and firefighters.
This is an investment in our states fu-
ture, which should not be overstated.
Senator Menendez has worked hard to
stop the unnecessary and wasteful subsi-
dies the federal government gives to the big
oil companies.
After all, they made an astounding $137
billion in profits last year! Talk about wel-
fare.
He was also a pioneer in support of the
Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act; as well as in
helping middle-class families with a tax
credit to better provide for their childrens
college costs.
Finally, he parted ways with his exces-
sively slavish colleagues on the recent Sen-
ate Banking Committee hearing
involving CEO Jamie Dimon of JP Mor-
gan.
He challenged Dimon with some hard-
ball questions regarding the loss of bil-
lions of dollars.
After all, have we forgotten what reck-
less, unregulated gambling by these people
did to our economy in 2008?
I am happy to support Sen.Menendez for
re-election.

How well can you spell?
Medford Kumon Math and
Reading Center will be hosting a
spelling bee on Tuesday, July 17,
at 7 p.m., at 128 Route 70, suite 4,
Medford, next to Tarantellas. The
competition is open to all ages of
the public and prizes and refresh-
ments will be served. Call (609)

Spelling competitions create an
awareness of the necessity to
spell and pronounce words cor-
rectly; they also develop enthusi-
asm to learn new words. Our pur-
pose is to help all children im-
prove spelling, increase vocabu-
laries, learn concepts and develop
correct English usage that will
help them all their lives.
Participation in spelling bees
also helps students hone organi-
zational skills and focus as well as
develop self confidence and poise
necessary skills for success in
public speaking, performing arts
and athletics.
Most importantly, spelling bees
are great fun for students, educa-
tors, families and friends.
