Section 1 INTRODUCTION
The Lawler Model 86-20 Kinematic Viscosity Bath meets the requirements of ASTM D445, D2170 and D2171 test methods. This is a single bath apparatus where the temperature stability and uniformity is within the specifications of the methods ( 0.02 C). There are seven test ports to place the viscometers. The liquid bath is vigorously agitated and electrically heated. A digital temperature controller maintains test sample temperatures from +20 C at +150 C. The bath is equipped with a high temperature limit, which is factory preset at approximately 165 C to prevent overheating of the samples in case of primary temperature controller failure. Note: Please consult Lawler if an adjustment needs to be made to this high limit controller. Model 86-20 is protected by a circuit breaker and can be accessed from the right of the unit.

Section 2 UNPACKING

IMPORTANT: Check that the shipping box is not damaged. IF THE BOX IS DAMAGED NOTIFY THE FREIGHT CARRIER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND FILE THE APPROPRIATE DAMAGE CLAIM. Carefully open the box. When unpacking inspect each item for obvious damage. If damaged is noted report it immediately to Lawler. Make sure to locate all items before discarding any packing and wrapping material. To remove the smudges on the cabinet (caused by the protecting wrapping material) polish the outer skin with a soft cloth using a stainless steel polish or window cleaner. IMPORTANT: Save the box and packing in the event the unit needs to be returned to the factory for warranty repair. IF THE BOX IS DISCARDED AND THE UNIT NEEDS TO BE RETURNED FOR REPAIR, IT WILL BE THE USERS COST AND RESPONSIBILITY TO CONSTRUCT AN APPROPRIATE BOX.

Section 3 INSTALLATION
Place Model 86-20 in its permanent position. It is important that the Model 86-20 bath be located in a constant temperature room away from drafts. Level the unit by adjustment of the leveling feet. Use a 13 mm (1/4 inch) open end wrench (or a small adjustable wrench) to loosen the lock nut (upper nut). Adjust the leveling feet (lower nut) with a 13 mm wrench (or a small adjustable wrench). When level, tighten the lock nut (upper nut). Make sure all four feet are in firm contact with the surface.

WARNING: Model 86-20 is not explosion-proof. Do not locate the Not explosion proof unit in an environment with explosive vapors. Keep combustible materials away. Fill the bath through one of the viscometer holes but not closer than 50 mm (2 inches) below the top with a suitable, low viscosity fluid. The 86-20 bath holds approximately 7 gallons (27 Liters) of fluid. High viscosity bath mediums slow down the agitation process and reduce the baths temperature uniformity and stability. CAUTION: Do not use flammable fluids, particularly those with flash points below 175 C. Due to coefficient of expansion, significant volume increase occurs at the higher temperature. If the bath is filled at room temperature, the bath fluid may overflow when at 150 C. When filling the bath allow for the volume that the viscometers will displace when immersed. Therefore, it is best to immerse 6 viscometers in the bath when filling the bath. Monitor the bath height at maximum temperature of operation and readjust the bath level to no closer than 25mm (1 inch) to the top. NOTE: Lawler is unable to make specific recommendations regarding the nature of the fluid to be used. Please choose appropriate bath mediums for the temperatures at which the unit is proposed to be used. Confirm that the power switch is off and connect the power plug to a protected electrical outlet as per specifications on the voltage tag. Model 86-20 is now ready for operation.

Press the SET/ENTER key to start the setpoint blinking. The blinking state indicates changes can be made. Use the Left/Right/Up/Down arrow keys to change the setpoint. Press the SET/ENTER key to register the setting. Periodically calibrate the bath temperature against a certified traceable temperature device or thermometer. Navigate to the bias bS menu, as described above. Press SET/ENT. Use the UP/DOWN arrows to make desired positive or negative change. Press SET/ENT to accept change.

CAUTION: Factory Use parameters should never be altered. This Do not change tuning will cause loss of control and possible malfunction of the unit. As a safety measure in the event of primary controller failure, a redundant controller is provided set at approximately 20 C higher than the maximum expected operation temperature. If this controller is tripped, the power to the machine will be shut down. To reset the high-limit controller, turn the main power switch labeled PWR off and, after 10 minutes, restart WARNING: The bath liquid level MUST NOT drop below 75mm from the top. When the bath has reached the test temperature and stabilized run the test as per test method. CAUTION: Use proper precautions when working with hot viscometers. CAUTION: EXTREME CAUTION MUST BE EXERCISED IN HANDLING THE HIGH TEMPERATURE BATH. PRECAUTIONS NOT DISCUSSED HERE BUT NEEDED MUST BE ADHERED TO. LAWLER WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OR CLAIMS RESULTING FROM USE OF THIS EQUIPMENT. Model 86-20 is protected by a circuit breaker inside the machine. To access the circuit breaker remove the right side panel. CAUTION: Disconnect the power plug before removing the panel. Replace the panel before reconnecting the power plug.

MAINTENANCE
The bath medium fluid will discolor and/or increase in viscosity with time. The increase in viscosity will decrease the mixing efficiency in the bath with resultant poorer temperature stability. The discoloration will make reading of the sample meniscus difficult to see. Periodically replace the bath fluids with fresh fluid by first siphoning out the old fluid. CAUTION: Disconnect power to the apparatus before attempting replacement of the fluid and doing any repairs or adjustments. Failure to do so may cause serious personal injury and/or property damage. There is no special maintenance requirement for Model 86-20. If there is loss of heating, confirm that the bath temperature has not exceeded 165C and activated the over-temperature controller. Press the power switch off and then on to reset it. Determine the cause of this tripping. CAUTION: Do not attempt to make any adjustments to the over-temperature controller or remove any of the cabinet panels without first disconnecting the power supply. Serious injury may result. Consult Lawler before changing the over-temperature controller trip point. As an added measure of safety, a float switch has been provided to shut the heater down in case of a low bath liquid level. If the bath cools well below the desired set point and/or there is loss of temperature control, it is likely that the heater is not operating. Check the liquid level of the bath and the high-limit controller, as described above. If there loss of heating, confirm that the circuit breaker has not tripped. To access the circuit breaker remove the right side panel. Determine the cause of this tripping. CAUTION: Before removing any of the protective guards for servicing disconnect all power to the unit due to the possibility of severe personal injury. If there is loss of temperature control contact Lawler for assistance.
