Old news print (ONP) consists of sorted newspapers and
other acceptable papers such as magazines, mail fyers and
phone books. Producing recycled ONP requires about 60%
of the energy used to make paper from virgin wood pulp.
ONP is recycled primarily into newsprint. Your
newspapers may already have some recycled content.
In 2010 Americans recycled 72% of this category.
Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times
would save 75,000 trees and if every American recycled
just 1/10 of their newspapers, we would save 25,000,000
trees a year. Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper
are thrown away every year in the U. S. Americans use
85,000 tons of paper a year; about 680 pounds per person.
Each ton of recycled ONP can save 17 trees, 380
gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfll space,
4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7000 gallons of
water. This represents 64% energy savings, 58%
water savings and 60 pounds less of air pollution.

Have you had
the pleasure
of meeting
Alice Burch
and Steve Gilgus? If you
havent, you are missing
the opportunity to know
a delightful couple. If you
have, then you know what
I mean! They are behind
the scenes, volunteering
quietly, and without
expecting anything in return.
In the past several months,
Alice and Steve have been
diligently washing lots and
lots of dishes after Caf and
Arts in the Park lunches;
making sure the kitchen is spic
and span after Movie Nights
as well as doing whatever is
asked of them at many of our
large events. The best part is,
they are always together doing
these less-than-glamorous
jobs and never seem to say a
cross word to one another!
Alice and Steve retired to Sun
City in 2010 leaving behind
their cooler, wetter, greener,
and probably prettier home in
the state of Oregon. Reliable
sources reveal they still visit
there often during the summer
months. They are passionate
about clean air, using green
products, recycling and
improving the environment.
To Alice and Steve: Thank you
for choosing to spend a large
portion of your time to help
ensure the overall delight of
the Community! The next
time you see Alice and Steve,
please give them a great big,
personal THANK YOU!

Anthem Partnership Benefts Residents
Mount Athos Restaurant &
Holiday Inn Express and Suites
Anthem at Merrill Ranch continues to
try and identify ways to support local
businesses and activities in the Town of
Florence. We arent alone in this endeavor!
There are some local businesses that are
also working hard to develop partnerships
and allegiances that will encourage
growth as well as unity within the Town
of Florence and Anthem at Merrill Ranch.
We are happy to announce a new
partnership with Mount Athos Restaurant
and the Holiday Inn Express and Suites.
Effective July 9
Peter Koulouris
of Mount Athos
Restaurant is
extending 5%
off the total
bill (excluding
alcoholic beverages) to Anthem residents
who choose to dine at Mount Athos
restaurant. At the end of each month,
they will match the total amount saved
that month and donate a check for that
amount back to the Anthem Community.
The Holiday
Inn Express and
Suites is offering
residents or
visiting friends or
family of residents
a rate of $69.99
per night June
through December
and $79.99 from December through May.
This is an example of how working together
can develop into win-win relationships.
As a resident of Anthem you can help by
supporting these two businesses. Let them
know when you are there and Keep Mount
Athos and the Holiday Inn Express and

Today, more Americans than ever suffer the effects
of uncorrected hearing impairment. Estimates range
from 36 to 40 million, including the more transparent
yet every-bit-as-important serious high frequency hear-
ing losses. Most are not even aware that their hearing is
a serious health threat, challenging their physical, men-
tal, social, and emotional
well-being.
In recent hearing aid
technology advances, the
wider bandwidth of three
peak hearing technology
meets many of those chal-
lenges unlike any technol-
ogy in the past. It is our
purpose here to provide some hypothetical examples of
how this technology is far superior to ordinary single
peak hearing aid technology, especially when delivered
in tiny open-ear devices like those shown above. We
will review some these benefits within the context of
three common hearing losses in the population.
Hearing Loss A, for instance, without amplification
will be overpowered in moderate background noise.
Typical single peak hearing amplification will provide
only minimal speech-in-noise ability. However, with
three peak fidelity (as depicted below), additional
acoustic clues allow for dramatically improved speech
in noise ability and much better spatial function.
Audiogram B has the additional difficulty of losing
all central auditory ability in unaided condition. Ordi-
nary single peak hearing provides little benefit spatially,
because one ear will sound amplified (hollow) and the
other ear will be overpowered. In wide band three peak
technology, however, having
more spatial bandwidth and
less low frequency transients,
one enjoys equalized sound to
normal loudness growth and
the benefits of two-eared hear-
ing.
Audiogram C is usually ac-
companied with moderate to
severe tinnitus in addition to tremendous difficulty hear-
ing in noise. Single peak correction offers little bene-
fitmerely amplifying noise and speech. This type of
severe hearing loss, on the
other hand, receives optimal
benefit with the much wider
bandwidth of three peak tech-
nology, because the acoustic
environment is larger and puts
more space (aka separation)
between the sounds in the en-
vironment. Few background
sounds occur above 2KHz,
even in speech babble, so these very difficult-to-fit
losses enjoy superior speech discrimination in compet-
ing background noise. Further, any existing islands of
hearing can be benefitted by an extended range, so that
better speech understanding is
enjoyed, as well as better
distance discrimination.
These and other benefits of
the new technology can be
demonstrated with various
speech listening situations,
with music, and warning sig-
nals. Then hearing impaired
individuals and their loved ones can see and hear viv-
idly how even the more serious hearing losses enjoy
benefits of listening ease, greater self confidence, and
more cognitive awareness.
