About this guide

1 Overview of SPOCK
SPOCK provides the information from which HP internal users, external customers, and partners determine interoperability between HP storage components. This information is used to troubleshoot technical issues at customer sites, help HP sales teams and partners to integrate new products and features into customer configurations, and provide customers with a tool to determine their upgrade and add-on options. SPOCK enables users to define their environment of interest by constraining various component types. For example, a user might constrain their environment of interest to be an XP24000 storage array in a Solaris 10 environment. Alternately, a user might constrain their environment of interest to be any EVA storage array connected to any Brocade switch. As a user constrains their environment, SPOCK lists all configurations that support that environment.

Overview of SPOCK

2 System concepts
Two concepts are crucial to understanding the structure of SPOCK: components and configurations.

Components
Components are the building blocks of SPOCK. Components can be hardware or software.

Component types
Component types are groupings of like components. Some examples of component types are host bust adapters (HBAs), servers, storage management software, and arrays.

Component instances
Component instances are individual occurrences within component types. In the case of an array component type, one example of a component instance is XP10000. Each component instance has attributes that are often unique to each component.

Configurations
Configurations contain components that work together in the SAN.

Configuration sets
Configuration sets are individual occurrences of configurations. An example of a configuration set for an array and operating system configuration is EVA3000/5000 v4.x HP OpenVMS Alpha 7.3-2.

Using the Getting Started screen

The purpose of the Getting Started using SPOCK screen is to select components from the left menu and check their compatibility. Once the components are selected, SPOCK displays the configuration sets that contain all of the components. The more components you select, the fewer the number of configuration sets. The Compatibility Tool allows you to set up complex scenarios and find HP-supported configurations based on components. For example, if you have an HBA and switch combination that works for you, the Compatibility Tool provides configurations within which those two components work together. From there, you can determine what other components you should add to your SAN.

The left menu includes: SPOCK HomeThis link gets you back to the SPOCK home page. Select ComponentsThis is the list of component types in the SPOCK database which are the building blocks for interoperability scenarios. The number of active instances of each type is noted in parentheses. Related ActionsThis section provides the ability to Clear selections, start over if you have already selected components and want to begin with a fresh selection. Related Actions also contains a link to the user guide and the Unmigrated Products page.

Getting started

4 Selecting components for compatibility constraints

SPOCK organizes components in a hierarchical structure. To search compatibility, you can constrain the component by hierarchy, instance, or version. For example, you can constrain an array by family, such as EVA, or by individual instance, such as HP StorageWorks 5000 Enterprise Virtual Array, or by version, such as HP StorageWorks 5000 Enterprise Virtual Array on controller HSV110 running with VCS 4.100. It is best to begin the constraint process by selecting from the left menu the component type that is at the highest level that you know exists in your compatibility scenario (for example, Operating System or Disk Array). Once you select your first component, you can select another component type in the left menu to add to your compatibility scenario. 1. From the Getting Started using SPOCK page, under Select Components in the left menu, select the component type you want to constrain. You can also click the component type under View by Component from the SPOCK home page. A box displays the highest levels of the component type. For example, Disk Array will display choices such as AiO, EVA, MSA, and XP.

Figure 7 Select box for components with Disk Array selected 2. To select lower-level components, click Refine next to the component. If Refine does not appear, you have reached the lowest level in the hierarchy.

Single Point of Connectivity Knowledge user guide

19

Figure 8 Lowest level for a component selection NOTE: The Select Components list changes the number of available components based on the constraints you select. The more constraints you select, the lower the number of available components. This reflects the narrowing of possible compatible components as you refine more of your selections. 3. 4. To navigate back through your chosen hierarchy, click the links at the top of the selection list. To view a detailed list at the current hierarchy level without selecting a component for constraint, click Show List. The detail in the list varies, depending on the level of the component hierarchy displayed. To select a component at any level, click Add to Selection. SPOCK displays the versions of the selected component in Selections as well as configuration sets in which they appear on the Supported Configurations screen. See Drilling down in configuration sets on page 21 for detailed information about configuration set results. To add more components to your compatibility scenario, repeat this procedure, beginning with step 1. NOTE: The more components you select, the smaller the list of supported configurations. This is because SPOCK finds fewer and fewer configuration sets in which all of the selected components appear.

5 Drilling down in configuration sets

The Supported Configurations screen appears when you click Add to Selection from the component selection box. Only configuration sets that match the selections you made will appear in Selections, and provide detail for only those components you selected. The Supported Configurations screen also appears when you click any of the selections under View by Solution from the SPOCK home page.

Figure 9 Supported Configurations screen The Supported Configurations screen has the following features: A list of configuration sets that match your criteriaAll of the configuration sets can be expanded to view the components that match the criteria chosen. If there is more than one page, click Next in the lower right-hand corner to page to more configurations. A link to view configuration set detailsFor more information on viewing configuration set details, see Viewing configuration set details on page 22. NOTE: If you navigate away from the Supported Configurations screen, the compatibility scenario you selected is no longer available and cannot be obtained by using the Back button on your web browser. In order to obtain the compatibility scenario again, you need to start the selections from the beginning.

21

A remove feature to eliminate the component selection from the resultsWhen you click remove next to the component in the selection criteria, the screen refreshes and shows only the components selected before the one removed. For example, if you selected a disk array, and then an operating system, and then a switch, removing the operating system also removes the switch. The supported configurations may change due to the change in component version selection. NOTE: Select Clear selections, start over in the left menu to remove all of your selections and return to the Getting Started using SPOCK screen.
