The curren t leak de t e c t i o n sens o r is desi g n e d t o hav e an ex t r e m e l y lo w bill o f m a t e r i a l s, an d w e mus t s t riv e t o do t h e sa m e. It is als o speci f i e d t o have an ex t r e m e l y lon g ba t t e r y life (>5 yea r s on 4 AAA ba t t e r i e s). A larg e po r t i o n o f our ti m e will nee d t o be spe n t inves t i g a t i n g po w e r req ui r e m e n t s f o r di f f e r e n t devices, while also f a c t o r i n g in t h ei r cos t. We have deci d e d th a t f o r t h e t e m p e r a t u r e ran g e uni t w e will utilize t h e Tex a s Ins t r u m e n t s MSP43 0 F1122. This micr oc o n t r o l l e r is f ai rl y lo w cos t an d als o has an ex t r e m e l y lo w st a n d b y curren t. We have also deci d e d t o utilize t h e build in A/D conve r t e r in this micr oc o n t r o l l e r t o incor p o r a t e a very lo w cos t an al o g t e m p e r a t u r e sens o r. The A/D conve r t e r will also be use d t o de t e c t a lo w ba t t e r y con di t i o n. The pr o g r a m m e r do e s no t hav e such st ric t requir e m e n t s bec a u s e it will only be use d in f r e q u e n t l y t o chan g e t e m p e r a t u r e t h r e s h o l d s. Ba t t e r y life is no t as imp o r t a n t , bu t cos t is s till a concer n. For t hi s reas o n, w e hav e deci d e d t o u tilize th e PIC16F883 f o r t h e micr oc o n t r o l l e r. This pa r t is lo w cos t an d f e a t u r e fille d an d will allo w us t o easily in t e r f a c e an LCD, mul t i p l e bu t t o n s, an d a seri al int e r f a c e f o r pr o g r a m m i n g th e t e m p e r a t u r e ran g e uni t.
