Xbia Furniture Expert Interview Part 2

Cl Andrew Kings, I believe you then teamed up with another local to Javea business. Ak Yes, I was approached by this couple who were doing very much a similar thing. They offered a reasonable hourly rate to use my van for an IKEA delivery service when theirs was full. This delivery service was based on the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. Cl What did you think of their service. Ak They were ok. They were a bit old fashioned with their marketing. The website was horrible. But they did good business because they were the only ones doing it. They could charge what they liked, and they did!

Cl What was wrong with their charges. Ak I really had a thing about this. They overcharged in my view for their IKEA delivery and assembly service. I dont have a problem with profit at all, but this felt like profiteering. Theres a difference. Cl - Is there an IKEA delivery service run by IKEA Spain? Ak Yes there is and they are much cheaper. Cl So did you fall out then over this. Ak - Not at all. From my point of view, I didnt. I put together a business plan to push them into different areas to increase their business so we could all benefit, but they didnt want this so we went our separate ways. It was a shame. Together we would have been very strong.

Cl So thats when you decided to start easy flatpax? Ak Yes. We dont really compete. We are operating in a different market to them. We are a low cost version rather like easyjet! However, we dont stint on service. In fact we like to think we offer a more fully featured range of services than anyone else around. We offer a complete Ikea furniture assembly service and with other suppliers such as Leroys and so on, we offer a full flatpack assembly service. Cl - So what does the future hold for easy flatpax? Ak We have been busy from the day we started, and we look for a reasonable growth rate for the business. Ikea in Spain offers great value for money on all their products and our clients know this. We are currently looking at another van to add to the fleet, to enable us to concentrate on other areas. As a result of our efforts, we have been approached to provide a full maintenance and rental service for holiday let villas and apartments. As we offer our clients a full advisory service to enable them to maximize their rental returns, this seemed a natural progression for both easy villacare and easy flatpax. We are currently in the process of building the new website. Cl You dont really sit still for too long do you? Ak - Business must continually evolve to fill the needs of clients. Any businessman or woman who rests on their laurels will not be successful. We still work 12 to 14 hour days and will continue to do this for the foreseeable future. We are hopeful that one of the kids will take over when we reach our dotage though!

Ak I went to the Thurrock lakeside store around 15 years ago and when I saw the arrows on the floor directing customers to where IKEA wanted them to go, I turned around and walked straight out!

Cl Not a good start then. So what was the driving force that pushed you to start easy flatpax ? Ak As many know, we came to Javea in 2006, and started a man with a van business. We did quite a few trips to IKEA Murcia on behalf of customers. We would take on pretty much any transport job in those days. If it went in the van, we carried it!

Cl No illegal immigrants though? Ak Of course not! I would never get involved with any trade like that!

Bring it all ho me and sho w yo urself as a REAL man. The ultimate challenge o f all men the DYI flatpack assembly! Do nt hesitate, sho w the wo rld yo ur marvelo us skills with a screwdriver and ho w engineering is yo ur o bvio us ho me territo ry.

Ok ! That didnt go so well no w did it? And o bvio usly this is no t in any way yo ur fault! Yo u went and bo ught these IKEA flatpacks, yo u paid fo r them and carried them inside in the blistering Spanish heat. Surely the flatback furniture assembly is a wo mans jo b !?! But no , even the suggestio n is the first step to wards divo rce. When shelves co llapses, so fas tumble and walls threaten to co me do wn admit defeat and ackno wledge yo ur limitatio ns. Previously Loved Furniture ?

Of co urse there is no definitive answer. Certainly a seco nd hand piece o f furniture that yo u stumble upo n, fall in lo ve with and find to be in perfect co nditio n can be a valuable additio n to yo ur furnishing. No w in Jvea, a lo t o f the seco nd hand sto res are o f a reaso nably high quality in general, but yo u still have to be o n yo ur to es to disco ver faults, scratches and bro ken bits as there is no guarantee o n seco nd hand furniture in Javea o r indeed anywhere else. The next pro blem o ften is the transpo rtatio n o f such previo usly o wned items. A few lo cal Xabia sto res o ffer delivery, so me fo r an extra fee and o thers fo r free but if they do no t, yo u have to make the arrangements yo urself.

The main hurdle with the bigger furniture sto res in Jvea is that they are selling new mueblo s a tu casa at excessively expensive prices, that yo u can easily find cheaper away fro m expat areas o r in bigger wareho uses. The previo usly o wned furniture fo r sale in Jvea appear to be priced based o n the new items available fo r sale in to wn, as such yo u do save so me buying seco nd hand co mpared to buying new in Xabia but o ften yo u co uld actually find co mparable items brand new in wareho uses inland o r fo r in stance in IKEA Murcia at the same prices as yo u wo uld have to dish o ut fo r o ld and used furniture in Javea. The co nvenience o f buying lo cally and suppo rting the lo cal business o f the Jvea sho ps is o f co urse a weighty argument. But at least do so with yo ur eyes o pen. Buying furniture in Jvea is largely an act o f charity, even when bo ught in no n-charity sho ps, as the price and quality simply do esnt match what yo u can find elsewhere.
